Hartford News Volume XXXV Hartford’s Only City-Wide Community Newspaper Number 15 The August 14 – 21, 2014 FREE Passionate Paddlers Drawn To Dragon Boats Dancers, Drummers, And Martial Arts Demonstrations Among Asian Festival’s Highlights The 93 teams and 3,000 paddlers who are racing at the 14th Annual Riverfront Dragon Boat and Asian Festival on August 16 and 17 range in age from teenagers to people in their 70’s. They are students, secre- taries, surgeons, and CPA’s. They live in big cities and small towns. But they have one important thing in common – their shared passion for dragon boating, a sport that began more than 2,000 years ago in China. In addition to being fun, dragon boat races are seen as having impressive benefits. Participants express it differently. Corporate teams talk about how the dragon boat experience fosters teambuilding among employees. Breast cancer survivors say that together they are stronger than they’d be as individuals. The earliest racers believed that they were protecting members of the community from unfriendly spirits of the seas – blessing the community with happiness and prosperity. According to legend, a popular Chinese poet and statesman named Qu Yuan was expelled from office by unscrupulous ministers. In a dra- matic protest against political cor- ruption, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Mi Lo River. Local fishermen rushed out in boats to try to save him – and to prevent his body from being eaten by fish. They beat drums, thrashed the water with pad- dles, and threw rice dumplings into the river to appease the water drag- on. In that rescue attempt, the sport of dragon boating was born. Dragon boat racing was confined to Chinese fishing villages until 1976, when an effort began in Hong Kong to introduce dragon boat rac- ing to other countries. In 1982, the United States Rowing Association was asked to start a dragon boat team. A group of rowers in Philadelphia decided to give it a try. The following year, in 1983, that first team from the United States went to Hong Kong – and finished second behind the Chinese team. In 1990, the International Dragon Boat Federation was formed and held its first World Championship competition in 1995. In 2001, more than 20 countries from around the world competed in the World Dragon Boat Championship races in Philadelphia. And now we welcome 93 teams and 3,000 paddlers to the 14th annu- al dragon boat races on the Connecticut River. With this large field of competitors, the Hartford- East Hartford Riverfront is estab- lishing itself as one of the most pop- ular dragon boating venues in the United States. While dragon boat paddlers com- pete on the river, Mortensen Riverfront Plaza in downtown Hartford will blossom with the col- orful sights and sounds of Asian cultures during Riverfront Recap- ture’s Dragon Boat and Asian Festival on Saturday and Sunday, August 16 and 17. “We have scheduled two full days of authentic Asian performances, representing many Asian cultures,” says Josh Urrutia, Riverfront Recap- ture’s Events Manager. Festival entertainment runs from 10am to 3pm on Saturday and Sunday. All performances will take place on the plaza. A complete schedule of performances can be found on page 3. Returning by popular demand this year is Dance China NY, an award- winning group of dancers and musi- cians from New York City who electrify audiences with their per- formances. New to the festival this year are Spectrum in Motion’s Crane Dance, Sweta’s Indian Multicultural Dance School, and Li Liu’s Acrobatics. Several local organizations also are performing, including UConn Taiko, a Japanese drumming group from the University of Connecticut, the Chinese Culture Center from East Hartford, which will include Chinese classical instruments in their performances, and Asian Performing Arts of Windsor, which will perform a traditional dragon dance for the festival’s opening cer- emonies as well as Chinese classi- cal GuZheng. Martial arts demonstrations will include Wu Shu, Tai Chi, and Kung Fu – performed by experts from the Hartford region – at 11 am, noon, and 1 pm on Saturday on the plaza. Children are invited to participate in an arts and crafts booth where they can make dragon masks or decorate chopsticks to take home or get their faces painted, all free of charge. The Teach Art 2 Me booths are open on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 3pm on the plaza. “The richness of the vibrant cos- tumes, many of which come from Asia, combine with the music and dance to transport spectators to a different part of the world,” Urrutia says. “For two days, the Asian festi- val transforms the Riverfront into a celebration of Asian cultures and introduces our guests to sights and sounds that maybe they have never seen or heard before. And it’s all free.”
