Haro Woods Management Plan Public Participation

The public and other stakeholders play a key role by helping to identify issues that need to be addressed, and the desired long term future, or Vision, for the park. This event is meant to help finalize the draft Vision, and identify goals that will achieve the Vision.

Haro Woods Advisory Group – An 11 member Advisory Group was created to help ensure that the Management Plan reflects the community’s values. It consists of representatives from the community and other key stakeholder groups including: the Cadboro Bay Residents’ Association, Frank Hobbs and Arbutus Middle School PACs, Friends of Haro Woods, PTR rep, ENA rep, UVic Childcare, 2 youth representatives and 2 general public representatives.

Values – nature, peace, beauty, biking, nature-play opportunity for kids, and walking/dog-walking were highly valued

General Vision Statements ‘Natural, restored, protected with trails, but no off-trail bikes’ (53%)

‘Natural, restored, protected with trails, and an area for off-trail bikes’ (28%)

‘Significant bike-focus’ (5%)

Other: (well maintained trails, natural vegetation; the trails are maintained, some of the openings are cleared a bit more, there arebenches in those openings, gardens with native plants are developed; more clean (no garbage) and the part with the manhole near the route not so smelly; installing benches; that it’s still there) (12%)

Draft Vision Statement:

“Haro Woods is a healthy, functioning urban forest that welcomes all respectful users.”

Definition: An ‘urban forest’ is ‘a densely wooded area located in a city’, or ‘a forest or collection of trees that grow within a city, town or a suburb.’
