Mapping out the Next Year Do you or your ministry team have an event that youd like to bring to fruition in the coming year? Would you like to become part of the planning and leadership of upcoming parish events? Well gather on Saturday, May 30 th at 10am in the parish hall to create our parish events calendar for the coming program year. Vestry and church staff will both be represented, and we hope that ministry leaders will attend as well. All are welcome to be a part of this. We hope to establish an engaging calendar for the coming year, one that includes great opportunities for formation, worship, fellowship, and service. This will establish leadership early for each event so that everyone in the parish will know early on where they can offer help. This will also help us to have a sense of balance in our calendar: enough to build community and carry out St. Andrews vision, but not so many events that ministry leaders get overwhelmed with outsized tasks and expectations. What this session will be: A chance to make sure that next year St. Andrews offers meaningful and engaging events that can be well-supported and well-attended An opportunity to clarify our leadership and volunteer needs for 2015/16 A way to resource new projects, support ongoing events, and give things on the wane a chance to sunset A means of making sure our calendar is engaging, balanced, and well-communicated What this session will not be: This will not be a planning session for regular offerings (children, youth, adult classes, Sunday litur- gy, etc). This is not a brainstorming session: ideas put forward will need to already have a general plan of action and at least one or two committed leaders. This process will be led by the Vestry team of Barbara Lawless, Mark Kaley and me. If you have thoughts about what has worked and not worked in recent years, please feel free to reach out to any of us. If you have an event that youd like make happen, please reach out to any one of us by Monday, May 18 th so that we can get an initial picture. Even if its an event youve been doing for years (such as the pancake supper, ECW lunches, Glory Ridge fundraisers, etc) please be sure to let us know your desired plans by May 18 th so that we can be ready for the planning session on May 30 th . Mapping out the Next Year Do you or your ministry team have an event that you’d like to bring to fruition in the coming year? Would you like to become part of the planning and leadership of upcoming parish events? We’ll gather on Saturday, May 30th at 10am in the parish hall to create our parish events calendar for the coming program year.

Andrew’s vision, but not so many events that ministry leaders get overwhelmed with outsized tasks and expectations.

What this session will be: A chance to make sure that next year St. Andrew’s offers meaningful and engaging events that can

be well-supported and well-attended An opportunity to clarify our leadership and volunteer needs for 2015/16 A way to resource new projects, support ongoing events, and give things on the wane a chance to

“sunset” A means of making sure our calendar is engaging, balanced, and well-communicated

What this session will not be: This will not be a planning session for regular offerings (children, youth, adult classes, Sunday litur-

gy, etc). This is not a brainstorming session: ideas put forward will need to already have a general plan of

action and at least one or two committed leaders.

This process will be led by the Vestry team of Barbara Lawless, Mark Kaley and me. If you have thoughts about what has worked and not worked in recent years, please feel free to reach out to any of us.

If you have an event that you’d like make happen, please reach out to any one of us by Monday, May 18th so that we can get an initial picture. Even if it’s an event you’ve been doing for years (such as the pancake supper, ECW lunches, Glory Ridge fundraisers, etc) please be sure to let us know your desired plans by May 18th so that we can be ready for the planning session on May 30th.

We look forward to a great session!

The Rev. Audra Abt & La Iglesia Puerta Abeirta

As many of you know, an exciting Latino ministry has been growing in Greensboro, anchored within the St. Andrew’s community and shepherded by the Rev. Audra Abt. Though we remain very involved, the ministry has grown beyond our church alone and has become strengthened through the collaborative support of faithful Christians from many churches and denominations in the Greensboro area.

This ministry is at the very heart of Audra’s vocation as an Episcopal Priest. Starting June 21st, Audra will begin a new phase in her ministry and career as she becomes the Greensboro Missioner for Bilingual & Intercultural and the pastor of la Puerta Abierta (Open Door Church). This will be a shared ministry of St. Andrew’s and the Diocese of North Carolina, and will be funded for the next several years through grants within and beyond the Diocese of North Carolina and from St. Andrew’s as well.

Audra’s presence will be reduced at St. Andrew’s, but she will continue to be a vital part of our worship and ministry. She will go from her current half-time position as Assistant to the Rector for Children’s Ministry to serving as a full-time missioner to the Greensboro area. She will be with us one Sunday per month, will continue to preach on a regular basis, and will continue to work with the Mission and Outreach team.

This will mean important changes for St. Andrew’s, however. Most notably, Audra will no longer have responsibility for children’s ministry. Much of our ministry with children has already been scheduled through the end of this coming fall, and in the interim I will work with members of the Children’s Support Team to discern the next stages of growth for children’s ministry at St. Andrew’s. We will continue to offer children’s chapel, classes and programs through the Children’s Support Team.

Audra has built a solid foundation for lifelong discipleship for both children and adults, and we are in a great position to discover where God is calling us next. I give thanks for her ministry, and celebrate her opportunity to explore this call to multicultural ministry in Greensboro. Her final Sunday as Assistant to the Rector for Children’s Ministry will be May 31st, then she will return (after a few weeks of well-deserved time off) to be commissioned for her new work when Bishop Anne Hodges-Copple visits St. Andrew’s on June 21st.

As you’ve already read in BJ’s column and heard at the Ministry with Children annual meeting in

March, I will be leaving my position as half-time Assistant to the Rector for Ministry with Children on

May 31.

On June 21 when Bishop Anne Hodges-Copple visits, I will begin serving primarily as Greensboro

Missioner for Bilingual & Intercultural house church with a special focus with the Latino community. I

will serve at St. Andrews as 1/4-time Associate for Mission and Community Engagement, which

means I will have the honor of worshiping with this parish once a month and spending time nurturing

members in their faith and engagement with others outside the church walls for the sake of Christ.

Serving our youngest members and their families these past 4 years has given me joyful memories. We

now see many more children in children’s chapel each Sunday, and the number of adults serving as

volunteers to guide the young ones has more than tripled. Our ministry with 3rd—5th graders, Kids of

the Kingdom, which Barbara Byrum helped start 4 years ago, continues to be a source of energy and

joy for all involved!

Watching our kids become more involved in our parish mission and ministry shows me that St.

Andrews is a place that values the contributions of all its members. From MLK Jr Day of Service to

preparing meals for the Servant Center and FaithAction, to VBS programs that reach out to the

neighborhood and places like Pathways Center and even Haw River— this ministry cares for people

beyond the walls of St. Andrews, and I am grateful for the energy of all the parents, EYC members, and volunteers who give their creativity, time and energy to the life of this ministry.

I humbly thank you for this opportunity to serve with you and look forward to meeting Christ together

where He calls us next.

Participate with St. Andrews in Mission at the Servant House

NEEDED: A couple of volunteers to assist with breakfast at Servant House

(1312 Lexington Ave, Greensboro, NC 27403 ).

We serve breakfast to 16-18 residents on the third Thursday each month; 7:00-8:15 AM. The residents,

many of whom are veterans, are especially nice and appreciate a hot breakfast. No cooking experience nec-essary, and you are not required to be there every month. It is an easy undertaking, but meaningful to both

the residents and the volunteers.

If you can help us from time to time, please contact Bob Houghton at 854-0918.

50-for-50

Diocesan Campaign

for the Episcopal Farmworkers Ministry

$1 a day for the 50 days of Easter

Each family in the diocese is invited to support our

diocese’s ministry in eastern North Carolina with

migrant farmworkers and their families.

St. Andrews will be participating ~ pick up a Har-vest for Hospitality mite box in the parish hall, and

every day give thanks for those who cultivate and

harvest the food we eat by putting a dollar in it.

We’ll have a Pentecost Day ingathering on May

24th.

Farmworkers come from all over Latin America to work between

March and October each year to plant, cultivate and harvest the food that comes to our tables.

For our third annual Dowtown Way of the Cross on Good Friday, the Misa

community helped create and lead a bilingual service that included singing as we processed and spontaneous prayers at each station. Over 50 people

from 6 different Episcopal churches participated.

Stop Hunger Now meal packing

On Saturday, April 18, many members from

Puerta Abierta and St. Andrews joined forc-es with other area congregations to pack

thousands of food relief packages for people

in crisis around the world.

State-wide Latino Leadership Train-

ing

On Saturday, April 25, the Puerta Abierta

community and St. Andrews hosted leaders

and congregations from around the state for

a day-long workshop to build our capacities

as community organizers. The skills gained on days like these are important for the

work that lies ahead in building a stronger

community where all people recognize their

dignity and power.

Evaluating Our Sunday Schedule This month we’ll learn a bit more about how our Sunday morning trial schedule has worked for all in-volved. We hope that everyone will complete the survey – either by tearing off the included survey or completing in online (link from the front page of the website) by Wednesday, May 13th.

We will also hold a forum after church on Sunday, May 17th to discuss the results and our experiences. Please plan to be with us for this important conversation.

Finally, we will extend the Sunday Schedule trial period by one week – through May 31st – to accom-modate the High Coffee to welcome newcomers to our parish.

Service

Parish Work Day

On Saturday, May 16th, we will be cleaning up our church grounds. We will start at 9:00 a.m. until ap-proximately noon and lunch will be served. Mark your calendars and come join us.

May 30th – Parish Calendar Planning Session

Help us plan and lead the parish-wide events for 2015/16! We’ll gather in the Parish Hall at 10 a.m.—noon. Vestry and staff will be representers and ministry leaders are encouraged to attend. All are wel-come. For more information, please see BJ’s letter on page 1.

Go Speak: Sharing Our Faith on May 21st

If you wish to be a part of a churchwide experience of deepening our faith and our relationship to one

another, mark your calendar for Go Speak: Sharing our Faith on Thursday, May 21st. For the second

year in a row, folks with gather in small groups of St. Andrew’s parishioners to tell stories of faith and

life in shared life as Episcopalians. Don’t miss this *One Night Only* experience! If you are interested,

please contact BJ Owens at the church office or via email.

Bazaar Time Again!

The Themed Gift Baskets were a large part of the success of the 2014 bazaar. The Basket Team would like to extend a huge “Thank You” to the many parishioners who contributed to this success. It takes the team five months to assemble the baskets, so we will begin the workshops in May.

Our goal for the 2015 bazaar is to exceed our previous success. We can easily accomplish this goal with contributions from those who have contributed in the past and for those of you who will be con-tributing for the first time. Please let Betty Atwell or Bonnie Holland know when you can contribute and what theme you may provide. Those that can contribute in the early months will be very helpful. If you have any ques-tions about what may be needed, give Betty or Bonnie a call.

There will be opportunities to get to know one another, and of course refreshments served in the grand St. Andrew’s style. If you would like to help with this, please contact Ken Massey and Alla Campanella.

VBS Leadership Team

Due to scheduling conflicts on the part of most the VBS leadership team, we're going to take a year off with this ministry. If you are interested in serving as a leader for VBS in future years, please let BJ know.
