Two important débuts highlight the harmonia mundi label’s releases. Conductor Pablo Heras-Casado leads the Freiburger Barockorchester in a disc of Schubert symphonies (p.11), while Marin Alsop presents world première recordings of music by American composer Kevin Puts (p.13). Also on harmonia mundi, cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras plays Elgar (p.10) and collectors will enjoy a collection of Baroque opera excerpts entitled Furie terribili (p.12). On Hyperion, Howard Shelley is the soloist for volume 61 of the Romantic Piano Concerto series (p.17) while Angela Hewitt plays solo piano works by Fauré (p.16). Valery Gergiev returns with the second volume of his Ring cycle for Mariinsky (p.20) and a second volume in his Szymanowski symphony cycle (p.19). Top non-classical releases include The Road to Jajouka (p.28), a spectacular tribute/benefit album featuring superstars such as Madeski Martin & Wood, Mickey Hart, Ornette Coleman, John Zorn and Flea. Jazz Village offers two powerhouse releases. The legendary Ahmad Jamal is back with Saturday Morning (p.25), and Mulatu Astatke makes his major label début with Sketches of Ethiopia (p.26).

IMPORTMoura Lympany (1916–2005) was the last of the major Matthay pupils. In 1938 she shot to international fame when she finished second to Emil Gilels in the Queen Elisabeth competition. A brilliant technician, she made the first complete recording of the Rachmaninov Preludes in the

1940s and gave the western premiere of Khachaturian’s piano concerto and subsequently recorded it. The HMV recordings presented here emphasize her virtuoso credentials and feature many of the piano’s most fearsome warhorses. This is repertoire she excelled in and her performances of, for example, the toccatas of Ravel and Prokofiev, have rarely been equaled.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThis CD marks the silver jubilee of the Amsterdam Sinfonietta. Under Lev Markiz, their first artistic director, the orchestra presented numerous premières. They recently presented

world premières by Gubaidulina and Vasks, as well as the west-European premiere of Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s Concertino with the present artistic director Candida Thompson as soloist. This recording pairs Weinberg’s Concertino with the two Chamber Symphonies of Shostakovich. The three works are not only related by their musical language, but also by the lifelong friendship of the two composers.

IMPORTFollowing up on his disc of music from the time of Louis XV on the Taskin harpsichord, John Kitchen now turns to an earlier period, with the works of Louis Marchand, Louis and François Couperin, Jean-Henri d’Anglebert and Elisabeth

Jacquet de la Guerre on the 1755 Luigi Baillon harpsichord from the Rodger Mirrey Collection. Kitchen studied seventeenth century French harpsichord music at Clare College, Cambridge, and is the conductor of Edinburgh University Singers and director of music at Old Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Edinburgh.

IMPORTBoth musically impassioned and socially engaged, William Sweeney’s music is at its most eloquent when voiced by that most human of instruments, the cello. The player navigates a stormy electronic landscape in the Borges-inspired The Poet Tells of

his Fame, while Schumann lies behind the powerfully argued Sonata for Cello and Piano, recipient of a 2011 BASCA British Composer Award. The sonata bears a joint dedication to Delphian artist Robert Irvine and to Erkki Lahesmaa - “keepers,” as Sweeney calls them, “of the cello’s inner voice.” Irvine is joined by his Finnish colleague here in the 2008 duo The Tree o’ Licht, in which Gaelic psalmody is transmuted into deepest instrumental expressivity.

IMPORTNigeria-born Omo Bello first earned a university degree in cell biology before she decided to devote herself to music and study in France. Winner of many international competitions, Bello has performed as a soloist as well as in

operas, oratorios and chamber music. For her first album, she chose the songs of Mahler’s Des Knaben wunderhorn, some of which are rarely recorded. The last movement of the composer’s fourth symphony is also included here in a version for piano for four hands, played by Julien Guénebaut and Etsuko Hirose. Bello displays a full range of talent on her début release, experimenting with satire, petulance, melancholy and magic.

IMPORTShura Cherkassky was one of the 20th century’s finest pianists. In this recording from June 2, 1971, which was recently discovered in Cherkassky’s own personal music archive, we hear him at the height of his powers, delivering

a stunning live performance. This is a substantial recital including three sonatas and four encore pieces, in a concert that lasts over 82 minutes. The Liszt Sonata, for instance, is a remarkable rendition, like no other, in which he plays with an overwhelmingly ferocious drama, glorious, sonorous tone, and an extraordinarily accurate technique.

IMPORTOn the surface, there is little in common between the elegiac lyricism of Elgar’s Cello Concerto, the Bohemian nostalgia of Dvorák’s exquisite miniatures and the academicism of Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations. But Jean-Guihen Queyras sees in this program a fascinating mirror effect, with each composer playing on contrasts to elucidate his intentions. Alongside the great Czech conductor Jirí Belohlávek leading the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Queyras reveals every facet of these Late Romantic works.

IMPORTOn his first recording for harmonia mundi, conductor Pablo Heras-Casado, whose conducting career encompasses the great symphonic and operatic repertoire, historically informed performance and cutting-edge contemporary scores, offers a fresh look at the symphonies of Franz Schubert. Leading the period-instrument Freiburger Barockorchester, Heras-Casado pairs the light-hearted Symphony No.3 of 1815, which ends with a Rossinian tarantella, with the darker Symphony No.4, written one year later and looking more towards Beethoven. Echoing the fourth symphony’s subtitle, it is indeed tragic that this symphony, like all his others, was never played in public in Schubert’s lifetime. Principal Conductor of the Orchestra of St Luke’s since 2012, Heras-Casado makes his débuts with the Metropolitan Opera and New York Philharmonic during the 2013/14 season.

IMPORTAngela Hewitt’s recordings of French piano music have received the highest critical acclaim. For this release, she turns to Fauré, a French composer who is both serious and introspective, with a refinement that has led to him being relatively overlooked by some performers. In Angela Hewitt’s hands this music is an utter joy. This album includes the composer’s major work in the genre, the Thème et variations, along with a selection of Valses-caprices and Nocturnes. It ends with a more radiant piece from Fauré’s youth, the Ballade pour piano seul, Op.19, dedicated to Saint-Saëns.

IMPORTHyperion’s amazing Romantic Piano Concerto series, now in its sixty first volume, continues to unearth rare gems of the nineteenth-century piano repertoire, rescuing them from obscurity and bringing them to glorious light with top flight performances by some of today’s finest pianists. Döhler and Dreyschock were contemporaries, both child prodigies and both hugely admired in their day. Döhler’s Piano Concerto is a lavishly ornamented virtuoso confection that requires a high-wire act from the soloist from start to finish. Dreyschock’s Morceau de concert features allusions to several Beethoven works while his Salut à Vienne is a lighthearted but highly effective showpiece. These first recordings of all-but-forgotten works live again through the stylish artistry and technical brilliance of Howard Shelley and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.

IMPORTBetter known as a composer of virtuoso piano music, Nikolai Medtner also wrote three violin sonatas, two of which are recorded here. The ‘Sonata Epica’ is one of the most ambitious and colossal works in the repertoire and without doubt one of the most important violin sonatas of the twentieth century. It draws deeply on Medtner’s Russian heritage, with intimations of orthodox chant and folk dances, and shows why Medtner was fleetingly regarded as one of Russia’s most progressive composers during the first decade of the twentieth century. The Violin Sonata No.1 is more understated and reminiscent of Fauré. Chloë Hanslip has proved herself an eloquent performer of the lesser-known Romantic violin repertoire, displaying rare commitment and resonant vitality.

IMPORTFollowing their multi-award-winning series of Byrd’s Latin music, The Cardinall’s Musick and Andrew Carwood continue their exploration of the sacred music of the acknowledged master of the Tudor era, Thomas Tallis. Tallis’s career spans the reigns of four radically different and difficult monarchs, whose various attitudes to the religious questions of the day meant that each required different liturgies and different music to adorn them. Tallis excelled in every style, and this album contains examples of each, from the monumental Marian votive antiphon Salve intemerata virgo, to the modest English-texted settings of I call and cry to thee and Psalm translations by Elizabeth I’s Archbishop, Matthew Parker.

IMPORTThe Binchois Consort, under their founder Andrew Kirkman, has a special affinity with the music of Dufay. In fact, it was to perform Dufay that the ensemble was initially founded. This mid-priced reissue features the composer’s Missa

Puisque je vis, Compère’s Omnium bonorum plena written in praise of the Virgin Mary, as well as motets by Dufay and other sources. Together, these works help color our increasing awareness of the florid richness and emotional devotion of music before the Baroque.

IMPORTThis mid-priced Helios series reissue features David Hill leading The Choir of Westminster Cathedral, two of its admired former organists and the English Chamber Orchestra Brass Ensemble in an illuminating and joyful collection

of works by Jean Langlais. His music was inspired by his love of the Catholic liturgy and of Gregorian chant. Plainsong melodies feature prominently, making much use of parallel fifths and octaves which suggest a twentieth-century update of early organum.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThis second, star-studded installment of Valery Gergiev’s Szymanowski symphony cycle features tenor Toby Spence as tenor soloist in the Symphony No.3, subtitled Song of the Night, and internationally renowned pianist Denis Matsuev as soloist in the virtuosic Symphony No.4, subtitled Symphonie concertante. Szymanowski’s Stabat Mater completes the disc and stars soprano Sally Matthews, mezzo Ekaterina Gubanova and baritone Kostas Smoriginas. Szymanowski’s third symphony combines the influences of Wagner, Chopin and Scriabin. The Stabat Mater is derived from poet Józef Jankowski’s translation of the medieval poem about the grieving mother of Christ. The fourth symphony, one of Szymanowski’s last compositions, was dedicated to Arthur Rubinstein and is a piano concerto in all but name.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe second (and highly anticipated) installment of the Mariinsky label’s Ring cycle conducted by Valery Gergiev features a powerful and star-studded rendition of Das Rheingold. Recorded in the sumptuous acoustics of the Mariinsky Concert Hall, the set’s cast is led by René Pape in the role of Wotan. Pape is ably supported by an international Wagnerian cast, and Gergiev’s absolute mastery of this repertoire is in evidence once again in this tremendously dramatic performance. Wagner himself conducted at The Mariinsky Theatre and it is also believed to be the first place where any of the music from the Ring was performed. Siegfried and Götterdämmerung will complete the cycle in 2014.

IMPORTCaterina Cornaro was the last of Donizetti’s operas to be premiered in his lifetime, and the only opera of his later period not to have had a quality modern recording. Conductor David Parry explains, “The opera requires a prima donna with a wonderful

voice, extraordinary technique and exceptional histrionic ability... The story is resonant and believable, a woman forced into a political marriage with a king who is assassinated, leaving her to rule on her own. This calls up from Donizetti one of his most deeply felt, atmospheric and dramatically truthful scores.”

DOMESTICOrange Mountain Music presents The Dance, a collection of works by composer Jon Gibson. Long-associated with the minimalist music scene, Gibson was a founding member and performer with the Philip Glass Ensemble. Steve Reich’s

1967 composition Reed Phase was written especially for him. Gibson has been working extensively in the world of dance. This program includes some recent and older dance pieces including recent commissions for choreographer Nina Winthrop & Dancers.

IMPORTAs a jazz guitarist with a background in architecture, Matthias Ockert gets ideas for his works from the art of interior design, transferring spatial structures to music. A student of Wolfgang Rihm and Hanspeter Kyburz,

Ockert combines a distorted electric guitar with flute and violin, and places succinctly rhythmic passages next to synthetic sound surfaces. On this portrait from Wergo, Ockert’s music combines contemporary ensemble music, jazz music and electronic composition. The majority of the works released here are new productions recorded at the Centre for Art and Media Technology (ZKM) in Karlsruhe and are world première recordings.

IMPORTChinese Australian composer Liza Lim was inspired by the lyric poetry of the Sufi poet Hafiz for her work Tongue of the Invisible. Lim explains, “the way in which he mixes and shifts levels of meaning gives rise to complex and

indeterminable frames of mind in oneself.” This variety of meaning is first and foremost reflected in the juxtaposition and coexistence of precisely and meticulously composed textures and improvised elements. But the compilation of the text set to music also facilitates numerous variants and interpretations. These dialogues are superbly “narrated” here by the pianist Uri Caine, singer Omar Ebrahim and the soloists of the ensemble musikFabrik.

DOMESTIC SACD Hybrid/ Mono/ DSDFile in: JazzOvershadowed throughout his life by his friends Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk, Elmo Hope was a talented pianist and composer in his own

right. He worked in New York as a band leader with greats Sonny Rollins, Lou Donaldson, Clifford Brown and Jackie McLean, toured with Chet Baker, and performed with Lionel Hampton. Originally released in 1956, Hope’s superb album Informal Jazz is now available on SACD. Hope’s solo spots are the best part of the record but some of the most well-known jazz artists of the time also guested, including tenor sax greats John Coltrane and Hank Mobley and trumpeter Donald Byrd.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Mono/ DSDFile in: JazzSome groups have existed only in the recording studio but have produced music of lasting value. This quintet, under pianist Red Garland’s

leadership, actually did play some gigs around New York in the fall of 1957, but even if it hadn’t, the rapport in the studio would still have been powerful. There was enough of a common spirit in the musical attitudes of all the participants, due to previous experience playing together. Originally released in November 1957, this SACD reissue of All Mornin’ Long features John Coltrane, Donald Byrd, George Joyner and Arthur Taylor.

IMPORTFile in: JazzSteve Turre recalls, “when I was ten years old, I wanted to play violin. My dad said, ‘Beginning violin sounds like a cat in the alley. Pick a horn.’” It is probably safe to say that the jazz world has been immeasurably enriched because of the senior Mr. Turre’s dislike of the violin. His son, Steve, has won any number of Downbeat Critic’s and Reader’s Polls and has been a fixture in the SNL TV band for nearly thirty years. He has, almost single-handedly squashed the trumpet-saxophone front line monopoly and has circumnavigated the globe several times with his most recent forays overseas taking him to Russia and South Africa. Here Turre has assembled a completely unique ensemble including three other trombone-playing Art Blakey alumni (Get it? The Bones of “Art”?). With Steve Davis, Frank Lacy and Robin Eubanks, Turre and company give ample testimony to the fact that the golden age of the trombone is now and put on display the many moods and capabilities of perhaps the noblest instrument in jazz.

Astatke has collaborated with numerous jazz legends such as Duke Ellington, and in 2005 was featured on the soundtrack for Jim Jarmusch’s film Broken Flowers. Conductor, arranger, master of the vibraphone and conga drums, Astatke now plays with his England-based group Step Ahead. Astatke’s uniquely rhythmic and colorful music weaves a modern groove into age-old melodies, and blends western classical music with Latin and Afro funk rhythms into a heady musical brew.

IMPORTFile in: JazzOne would be hard-pressed to name a working jazz musician who has played with a longer list of great artists than Ray Mantilla. From the beginning of his career in the 1950s with Latin music greats Xavier Cugat and Monguito Conjunto, Mantilla has played with such wildly diverse personalities as Eartha Kitt, Freddie Hubbard and Michael Urbaniak. Together with Max Roach, he was a founding member of the popular percussion ensemble M’Boom. On his new album The Connection, Mantilla has taken his decades of experience in music and synthesized it into a language which encompasses the best of all genres while never quite leaving his Latin roots and heritage. With a band made up of long-time colleagues, Mantilla rips through an imaginative program of originals and standards where the Latin beats are tinged with echoes of Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Spain and his own Nuyorican roots.

IMPORTPerrine Faillet has nourished her creative spirit with dance, theatre, sound poetry and performance aesthetics. A multifaceted artist, Faillet launched her alter-ego, Peau (Skin), with recordings made in her home studio. Three years after her first album, Peau returns with Archipel (Archipelago), a collection of new pieces conceived at her mountain retreat in Vercors and at the Farside Studio in Paris. Listening to this dreamy, mercurial music, you will see French chanson collide with electronic music and post-rock landscapes, revealing an extraordinary songwriter and performer, a genuine poetic and sonic explorer. To coincide with the release of her new album Archipel, Le Chant du Monde is simultaneously reissuing Peau’s début album Première Mue (first molt). It explores the landscape of her own mysterious and sensual universe, shedding and embedding pieces of herself along the delicate line where the personal meets the universal. Sung in both French and English, Peau’s songs magically encompass the entire spectrum of human senses and emotions.

IMPORTYann Arthus-Bertrand’s film Planet Ocean is inspired by the concept of the ocean as both a soothing getaway from urban life and “the primordial soup” from which all life has sprung. The film’s soundtrack is composed by Israeli-

born Armand Amar, winner of a 2010 César Award for Best Music Written for a Film, who has long worked with Yann Arthus-Bertrand. “His music has an unfathomable mystery, it...magnifies the images on the screen,” says Arthus-Bertrand.

IMPORTWritten for the Dover Quartet with chamber orchestra, Howard Shore’s score for Arnaud Desplechin’s Jimmy P. balances the film’s themes of memory and introspection. The film is an adaptation of George Devereux’s book “Reality

and Dream: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian.” Starring Benicio Del Toro and Mathieu Amalric, it follows a Native American soldier, Jimmy Picard (Del Toro), who suffers psychologically in the aftermath of World War II. Working together, Devereux (Amalric) and Jimmy P. form a bond of friendship amidst their professional therapeutic relationship.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDSteppenwolf have become synonymous with their huge Harley-ridin’ hit “Born to be Wild,” but their success was far broader, with sales totaling more than 25 million units worldwide. Steppenwolf started life in Canada in the early ‘60s as The Sparrows, but did not find fame until they had changed their name and released their rockin’ album début in 1968, now available on Hybrid SACD from Analogue Productions, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio. When the album’s top two tracks, “Born to be Wild” and “The Pusher,” were used in the film “Easy Rider,” the success of the album was assured. It marked the first of the band’s five consecutive gold certified albums.
