B Day Tutoring: T/W/TH 4:15-4:45p Course Description: Students enrolled in English II Pre – AP will continue to increase and refine their communication, reading, and critical thinking skills. High school students are expected to plan, draft and complete written compositions on a regular basis. English II students will also read extensively in multiple genres from world literature such as reading selected stories, dramas, novels and poetry, non-fiction, and persuasive writing. Texts: Glencoe Literature Course V Glencoe Language Arts Grammar and Language Workbook WriteSource Voice Lessons by Nancy Dean Novels: Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Animal Farm by George Orwell, and an additional novel from the AP reading list to be announced. Plays: “Julius Caesar” by William Shakespeare; “Antigone” by Sophocles Holt- Reinhart Vocabulary Workshop **Due to the time constraints inherent in our schedule, students will have to read the novels assigned in class primarily as outside reading. The students will respond to the novels they read through the creation of dialectical journals, class discussion, participation in literature circles, and assessments such as quizzes, essays and tests. ** Students are strongly encouraged to purchase the novels so that they can mark in the books and take notes. Teachers will check out the novels to students who do not have them.; however, there is a $15.00 fine if students do not return checked out novels Summer Reading: Students were required to read the novel Bless Me, Ultima during the summer, and will be quizzed over this novel during the first week of school. More details will be given in class. Extra-Credit Assignments: Students may choose to perform one extra-credit assignment each nine weeks. Students may read an approved AP novel and write an analysis of the rhetorical devices utilized in the text by the author to develop a thematic comprehension of the text, or other as approved by the teacher. Teachers will notify students of due dates.

Grading Procedures: All assignments are extremely important to a students' grade. In order to pass, a student must complete his or her assignments in a timely manner. Grades will be weighted as follows: • Tests, Research Paper, Writing, Projects 25% • Daily Work 75% - Some grades, may count as more than one daily grade, and be weighted

differently. For example, quizzes count as three daily grades. Late Work and Make-up Work: Late work will receive a 15 point deduction in points for each day late, up to 2 weekdays. Make-up work needs to be turned in by the third day after the absence. Long-term projects cannot be turned in as make-up or late work. If a student is absent the day of an exam, he / she will be expected to take a make-up exam, the day after he /she returns. It will not be the same exam

from the test day. Rules: Students must adhere to the following rules in class each day or be subject to the school’s discipline plan. Reminders of the rules are posted around the classroom or found in their student handbook. • Follow directions the first time they are given. • Follow all school rules. • Bring all materials needed to learn to class. • Respect others and display common courtesy. • Do not interfere with another student’s right to learn. Consequences: The following actions may be taken should a student fail to adhere to the rules in place. 1. Warning 2. Warning and parent contact 3. Lunch or afterschool detention and parent contact 4. Referral and parent contact Progress Reports: Progress Reports will be brought home by the student every 3 weeks. If a parent has not received a progress report from their child by this time, please contact the teacher. We highly encourage parents to sign up for "Parent Access" at the school so parents may access their child's grade at any time. Due Dates: We reserve the right to change due dates and add or eliminate items from the curriculum should we feel it is necessary. Students will be given a minimum of three days notice in order for them to accommodate the new due dates and/ or items. Class Supplies: Students need to purchase the following supplies and bring them to class daily. • A 1 subject spiral notebook/composition notebook • Pens and Pencils • Loose-leaf notebook paper • 1 Flash drive is recommended • Bottle of hand sanitizer • Box of Kleenex
