Clean Energy as a win-win opportunity for both regions
GCC
EU
Among the world leading oil and gas producing and exporting countries;
Among the highest energy consumers (Among the highest CO2 footprint);
Recent developments created an exciting momentum for fast
development of the clean energy market in the GCC.
The world’s major importer of fossil fuels;
Is leading world climate change mitigation efforts;
Well-established interest to collaborate with the GCC countries in
effectively addressing clean energy issues.

The role of cities
WREC - 18 | UK | July 30- August 3, 2018
Smart Energy Cities
The Cities are trying to become “smarter”,
incorporating these directions.
Oslo aims at reducing the energy consumption
by 50%, transforming the city into a smart city.
Smart Energy Cities are expected to play a key role in the implementation of
Europe 2020 Strategy.
Clear strategy towards sustainable energy development via binding targets till
2020 and beyond.
Energy Efficiency Directive (2012/27/EU), EU countries set up an energy
efficiency obligation schemes → energy companies have to achieve yearly
energy savings of 1.5% of annual sales to final consumers.
Smart metering and smart grids roll-out.

EU Perspective
WREC - 18 | UK | July 30- August 3, 2018
EU Perspective
There are strong governmental programs for extended smart energy deployment.
A number of smart cities projects exist already and numerous new smart energy city
initiatives are planned for the near future.
Intelligent energy management within these smart cities is not yet well established
and respective systems are still in their infancy.
WREC - 18 | UK | July 30- August 3, 2018
GCC Perspective
Monitor Deloitte (2015).
Smart cities…Not just the sum of its parts.

Joint Publications
WORKSHOP Objectives
Analyse how IoT can be mostly used by energy / facility managers, Energy
Service Companies (ESCOs) and specialists, who take decisions based on the
information they get.
Investigate how citizens (energy end-users) can be included in a more efficient way
in this process.
Analyze the role that the EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network could have
as a facilitator for successful synergies.

Open Questions
What does it take to have a smart energy city?
It’s more than gadgets?
What’s more important: Smart or Sustainable city?
What is better: having a Smart City or a Private life?

Thank you for your attention!
What is your experience of smart energy cities in your region?
How can smart technologies support energy transformation towards
sustainability?
How can the energy managers and buildings' users get a deeper understanding
about their building's consumption and its impact?
How can the energy end-users be motivated towards behavioural change for
energy conservation?
