TO OUR SBC FAMILY TO OUR SBC FAMILY TO OUR SBC FAMILY TO OUR SBC FAMILY

Donna and I will be on sabbatical for the months of May through July: this is the first time I have had one and we are very grateful. We will be pulling our trailer as we visit family in Oregon, California and Missouri. This will be a time of physical and spiritual renewal for us as we visit different churches, read, and study. I hope to return with fresh energy and vision to apply to this wonderful Church. We love you all very much.

I have been working with Pastor Shane, the Elders and staff to ensure a smooth transition and I am confident that they are well prepared. I am also confident that all ministries and committees will continue their efforts for our Lord. As always, the office is a good place to start if you have questions. Pastor Shane and the Elders will, of course, also be available. The Elders have set up a rotating schedule to be available for visitation or other needs.

You will be in our prayers, and we likewise will appreciate your prayers for us. May God bless you.

Love, Pastor Dave

FROM YOUR ELDERSFROM YOUR ELDERSFROM YOUR ELDERSFROM YOUR ELDERS

Although Pastor Dave and Donna will be greatly missed during their well-deserved sabbatical, we are making every effort to ensure that the needs of the Body are being met. Some specifics:

• Pastor Shane will be overseeing the church office and will be available to either conduct or help to make

arrangements for baby dedications, baptisms, weddings, funerals, etc.

• Elder Paul Hanson will conduct the Wednesday evening prayer and Bible studies.

• If you are a first-time visitor to SBC, your blue “welcome bag” contains a get-acquainted CD with one of pastor

Dave’s recent sermons. Your coupon for a free meal can be redeemed with pastor Shane or any Elder, or you

can wait for pastor Dave’s return in August. Thanks for being here!

• The Elders are rotating responsibility for “Elder of the Week” (see below), and are avail-able 24/7. Contact this elder either directly or through the church office for visitation needs (hospitalization, illness), counseling requests, or any issues of special concern.

Hello from rainy Westport, WA.,

We are here with Donna's relatives. I met some of her cousins that I had only heard about. Most of them are out fishing for salmon. I thought $125 for one Chinook sounded too expensive so I am going golfing today. Donna will be shopping with two of her aunts. Next, we will be returning to Portland to check on Donna's parents. I would greatly appreciate your prayers for Donna's mom, Billie.

I am reading "50 People Every Christian Should Know" by Warren W. Wiersbe Here is a great quote from Reuben Archer Torrey (R.A. Torrey served as Pastor of Chicago Avenue Church, later to become Moody Memorial Church, and later helped found BIOLA and was the founding pastor of the Church of the Open Door in L.A.): "I would rather win souls than be the greatest king or emperor on earth; I would rather win souls than be the greatest general that ever commanded an army... My one ambition in life is to win as many as possible. Oh, it is the only thing worth doing, so save souls; and men and women, we can all do it."

SALUDOS FROM YAKIMA, WA. July and August 2011 Dear Brethren: Summer is finally here in Yakima. We praise God for all His blessings.

Last month Maria had her final chemo infusion. It has been hard going, but Lord willing this will be the last of the chemo. She had a CT scan done on June 29 and a doctor’s appointment on July 6. There se-ems to be something else there????, so the doctor ordered a more detailed blood work on July 29. Her red blood cells and platelet count were lower than last month. Doctor thinks that maybe with iron and vitamin C, this problem will correct itself. We wanted to hear the word “remission”. “remission”. “remission”. “remission”. Maybe on her next appointment, Lord willing, we will hear it.

We traveled to Salem, Oregon in June, where I preached to a Hispanic church in need of a pastor. Pray for this church. They and we, are praying to see if it is God’s will for us to move to Oregon and help there. Also, this month I will share about our ministry with three English speaking churches. Lord willing in August I will go back to preach in Salem, and travel to Forks to see how the church is doing. Also, in September a new School of Ministry semester begins in Salem and Yakima. Lord willing, I will do all this with the Lord’s help and my wife by my side.

Thank you once again for all your prayers and support. Please pray for:

1. Strength and health for Maria and me. 2. The School of Ministry (Yakima and Salem) for the men and women that come and for new students. 3. A new teacher for the school in Salem. Pastor Jose Alvarez, will not be able to continue teaching, he will be missed.

““““My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:26 (NIV) The Cordovas (The Cordovas serve with Northwest Independent Church Extension, where he is the Hispanic Field Director. SBC is part of their support.)

THOUGHTS ON SHARING YOUR FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST

1. Sharing means talking to people about Jesus

2. Are you excited and thrilled about your relationship with Him?

3. Being excited and thrilled ought to make it easier to share.

4. Sharing may start with you asking a question. Here are some ideas.

• “May I ask you a personal question?”

• “May I share with you something that is very important to me?”

• “Have you discovered how to have peace with God?”

5. Find a meaningful gospel tract you like and use it when you share. “This little booklet

tells about the most important relationship you could ever have.”

6. Know how to explain what the Good News is all about.

RECLAIMING MUSIC Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come be-fore him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. Ps. 95:1, 2 (NIV)

We were jammed into a blue and white circus tent with a couple hundred African Christians. They had gathered for a week of camping, worship, and instruction in Doma, Zimbabwe. Most sat on the floor, until a leader called on a woman to lead out a song.

The soloist’s voice spread a mournful plea through the tent. Hearts opened to catch her tempo and ride its momentum toward God. Soon, five or six voices sustained the final note of each of the gravely phrases. Their range covered every band within the harmony rainbow from soprano yellow down to baritone purple. As more worshipers rose to their feet, new voices sobbed out the interces-sory theme.

Two or three verses into the song, some began to meter out the base rhythm with claps. Others took up counter-parts to the percussion of hands. Deft palms slapped out beats until a small orchestra of clapping punctuated the flying vocal notes. The next layer was the whistles, hoots and shouts. Women spiked the praise by adding shrill yells as they patted their mouths like an American Indian war call. Even babies seemed to holler out in joyous rhythm. The whole congregation stomped and boogied until a holy dust cloud rose from the dirt floor; it became an earthier version of the glory of God that pushed the Israelites out of the temple in Solomon’s time.

God’s beautiful gift of music has been abducted by the evil one. In days past, African tribal music was used in hedonistic worship of ancestral spirits. My Christian friends reclaimed their music for God’s glory. They darted into Satan’s camp, snatched the sacred prize, purified it with the blood of Christ, and reveled before their King while holding the recovered gift above their heads.

Prayer: “Mighty Creator, my heart soars in worship of you through music.”

James D. Christian
