DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS FOR ME? I would love to hear your thoughts on 4-H planning. Do you have any workshop ideas that you think would be great for Hardin County 4-Hers? How about project groups, community service pro-jects or fair activities? Do you have anything that you think would be great for our newsletter? I would love to hear all of your ideas. The sky is the limit! Feel free to contact me any time. - Lori

Pay Your Enrollment Fees Online!

The Alden Active Achievers, Eldora Eagles, ENP Bear-cats, and Tipton Grant Toppers have signed up for a

new feature that allows you to pay your Enrollment Fee on 4HOnline when you re-enroll. Online payment is

completely optional for these members, but will hope-fully save a few steps for those opting to participate.

Members and Leaders, re-enrollment in 4-H or Clover Kids be-gan on September 1st and takes just a few minutes at https://iowa.4honline.com. Anyone who was enrolled in the past has a 4HOnline account. Please see page 4 in this newsletter if you have trouble logging in to 4HOnline and accessing your account. Paper enrollment forms are still available this year from your leader or may be downloaded from our website. New families: You can now go in to 4HOnline and enroll in 4-H. Paper registration forms are no longer needed. Fees: The State 4-H Enrollment fee is $30. However, the profits from the 4-H Food Stand at Fair pay for half of this fee, so Har-din County 4-H Members only pay $15. An additional $15 late fee will be included for members who enroll after December 1st. Clover Kids - ask your leader about your own club fees as this differs from 4-H. Independent Members: Some 4-Hers choose not to join clubs. Enrollment fees for independent members is $30 due to not working in the 4-H Food Stand or hosting a shift in the Youth Building at Fair. Clubs that enroll 95% of their members by December 1st will receive an ice cream sundae party! Clubs that increase their membership by 10% (by July 1, 2018) will receive a $50 pizza party! Please enroll soon. After December 31st, families that do not re-enroll will not longer receive our newsletter. We do not want you to miss out on any 4-H news or deadline notifica-tions!

AUTUMN IS ENROLLMENT TIME!

Apply for a grant to help you plan and carry out community improvement projects! Each year DuPont Pioneer offers grants to 4-H clubs for local community improvement projects. The purpose is to provide “seed money” that clubs can use as a starting point on their project. Clubs need to find additional resources in their commu-nities for their projects. Application forms are available at all ISU Extension offices or at www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/pioneergrants. More information and helpful tips can also be found on this page.

Grants vary from $50 to $500. Proposals are reviewed by a committee of 4-H volunteers and staff. Clubs that received funding in past years must be undertaking a new project to be eligible for funding again. Grants are for new projects, not those already completed or in progress. Applications are due to County Extension and Outreach Offices by Jan. 16, 2018, then forwarded to State 4-H Office no later than Jan. 30, 2018. Decision letters should be sent by mid-April If awarded, checks from the Iowa 4-H Foundation will be en-closed with the letter.

BEEF WEIGH-IN: DECEMBER 9TH

Market beef weigh-in will be Saturday, December 9th from 9 am to 12 pm at the Hardin County Fairgrounds in Eldora. Weather make-up date will be the following Saturday, December 16th.

All calves that will be shown for county, state, and inter-state show must be weighed. Each exhibitor may nominate a maximum of ten market beef animals.

Market beef to be exhibited at Ak-Sar-Ben and State Fair must pay $5/head at weigh-in and have retinal images tak-en. Hair samples/DNA testing is no longer be required for Ak-Sar-Ben.

Returning Bucket Bottle Calves that will be market steers or market heifers must be weighed in at this time to show in the returning bucket bottle calf class at the Hardin County Fair. Returning bucket bottle calves can only be shown by the same person that exhibited the calf the previous year.

Calves born from a Hardin County cow-calf herd may be nominated for the Born and Bred Hardin County Fair class.

Purebred steers must have the breed identified. Registra-tion papers are not needed at the time of weigh-in, but will be verified (along with tattoo) at county fair and state fair check-in. If breed information is not properly identified, animals must be shown in the crossbred class.

VERIFY BY FEBRUARY 1st: In 4HOnline, members will be re-quired to verify that the information is correct about the animal(s) they intend to exhibit. Therefore, the parental and exhibitor waivers are NO LONGER needed if a youth or parent is NOT at the weigh in site. Members will receive directions on how to verify their animals in 4HOnline at weigh-in. Verification in 4HOnline must be completed by February 1, 2018. Information entered will stand and no changes can be made after February 1.

MARKET BEEF FEEDER PEN WEIGH-IN

If you are interested in learning about marketing cattle, think about participating in the market beef feeder pen project. Youth will learn about pricing, rate of gain, meat quality and how you can improve the way you raise your calves. Feeder pen project allows 4-H-ers to bring 4-10 calves to the fair without grooming or showing them in the arena. They are judged based on rate of gain & quality of meat. A judge will talk with each 4-H’er and explain how their pen was ranked & ways to improve. This is a great learning experience for those interested in raising cattle in the future. When: Saturday January 20, 2018 during a certified scales hours (in order for scale tickets to be obtained). Weather make-up, January 25-26. Where: Weigh-in can occur at any APPROVED certified scale in Hardin County, but please call us first to work out the lo-gistics.

IMPORTANT: You must sign up before January 12th to make an appointment as an Extension-approved indi-vidual must observe weighing and tagging. Call the Extension Office at 641-648-4850 or Dianna Haywood at 641-750-1676.

AWARDS BANQUET RECAP & THANKS

On behalf of the Hardin County Extension Office and the County Council, we want to thank everyone who attended our 4-H Awards Banquet on November 11th and helped to make it a huge success! The food was plentiful and delicious the enter-tainment was outstanding. Thank you so much to Amanda DuChane of the ENP Bearcats for sharing with us your vocal solo from Share-The-Fun, “Till They Came Home”. It was a wonder-ful tribute on Veterans Day! The County Council would also like to thank all of the clubs who contributed to our silent auction fundraiser. We raised over $505 dollars this year. We plan to use this money towards sev-eral projects in Hardin County over the holidays. In one school district, we are adopting a family to provide them with gifts for the holidays, both necessities and toys. In another school dis-trict, we are donating non-perishable food to families in need so that they may be able to prepare meals for their families over winter break. We will also be donating to Greenbelt Home Care’s event, "Helping Holidays in Hardin”, which provides qual-ity toys at 75-80% discount price for parents who may be strug-gling financially. For Valentine’s Day, we plan to assemble and

distribute over 200 gifts to the residents of four nursing homes in Hardin County. Again, we thank you so much for allowing us to serve some of the needs in our county over the holidays and months to follow.
