  • HARD REPORT More On The Picks...Def Leppard, "Women", Mercury... Now that"Slippery When Wet" has finally overtaken"Pyromania"'s 7 million unit mark, it's about time DefLep lobbed the first volley of their second assault onthe record books. The corn ng "Hysteria" album mayhave cost millions to make --but one listen will tellyou they'll make that back in about a minute. It'sclearly one of the group's most powerfully massappeal efforts, and definitely not too rough for popcrossover duty. Face it --even their giant name andMutt Lange couldn't guarantee the goods --and aftergetting past Rick's accident, producer changes,Mutt's crash --and the overall wear and tear of 4 1/2years, we should all be damn glad that one of theoriginals is still the greatest.

Cock Robin, "Just Around The Corner",Columbia.... What do women really want? Well, among other things they'd like their favorite stationto lay out a little more roll In between the rock --andthat's where Cock Robin gets the call. Though mostprogrammers opted for wait -and -see on their lastsingle ("I Thought You Were On My Side"), It did seeaction on over 50 stations and a number of majors. The eighteen months since then have seen a subtleshift toward softer, more adult oriented crossovers --and thanks to Ace producer Don Gehman, this newsong is not only a major improvement, it's also muchmore in style. As for vocalist Peter Kingsbery, is thisguy the new Gene Pitney or what?

The Brandos, "Gettysburg" , Relativity... Iknew it was Just a matter of time Mike and thegood folks at Relativity tied Into a legit longshot--andhere it is!! The quirky Fogerty meets REM harmoniesdrive us nuts, and the song Itself puts most of theneo-garage/roots rock bands I've heard lately toshame-in terms of both writing and performance. And when's the last time you heard anyone work thatCivil War theme? For great guitars, haunting vocalsand the unexpected treat element, the Brandos areeasily the best new act we've come across since theSmithereens.

Guns N' Roses, "Welcome to the Jungle",Geffen.... Sure, Polygram still backs the big unitcount outfits, but in terms of artist development in theHard Rock sector, Geffen's the guys to beat. Hot onthe heels of Hagar, Whitesnake, and Tesla, let's havea big hand for Guns N' Roses!! Noted A&Rmetallurgist Tom "Motley Crue" Zutaut heard that LAbar buzz early on --and the finished product heresports all kind of phone magnet riffs, and the rightkind of Aerosmith/Stones/Sex Pistols/AC/DC bluesroots overtones to do better than OK with the upperend of the spectrum. You might be confused at first, since there's a lot happening at once --but listen andtest at night and you'll roll the add a week later, guaranteed.

Roger Daltrey, "Hearts Of Fire", Atlantic.... I think we're all agreed that Roger deserves big points forflying the edge of the commercial envelope on his "Take Me Home" leadoff track --but obviously that masterfulattempt will have to remain in album appetizer status. The main course? This carefully crafted one listen, made for radio hit. If it's slightly poppier than you'd prefer, take heart in that killer chorus and alwaysdistinctive sound, and realize you'll be dealing with a cross format challenge on this beauty quicko pronto.

RECORD OF THE WEEKJon Astley, "Jane's Getting Serious", Atlantic.... Ah yes --the tune many thought was over weeks agocontinues to pile up new stations at a practically unprecedented rate. Requests are what make America (andthis song) great --and they just keep on coming. Our latest report finds "Jane" jumping 10-7 Most Requested, with 15 stations now listing top 5 phones. We've also got a meaty 31-22 Hard Hundred move, with 12increases, 22 adds --and a total of 59 new believers over the past three weeks. And if that's not the portrait of arecord that's seriously on fire, I don't know what is. KBCO's Doug Clifton comments, "The song gets greatrequests and just passed tile Dead for Top requests. If you give this record a chance you'll have just as muchsuccess as we have"....Well, are you ready?

ALSO NEW THIS WEEKSammy Hagar, "Returning Home", Geffen...."Boys Night Out" may have the chart momentum witha 41-32* move --but we remain convinced "Home" isthe real deal for now. That acapella punch -in a la"Jack And Diane" is can't miss, and you've gotta loveall those changes. It's currently on 27, includingKRQR, KGB, WDVE, KDJK, KGON, KICT, WDIZ,WGTR, WIOT, WKLS, AND WLNZ. 79-73*.

Joe Ely, "Lord Of The Highway", Hightone....Anyone remember the Band's old Spike Jones bitabout hating to hear him s ng but loving the way hetalks? I surely don't hate anything about Joe --butit's definitely the guitar playing that distinguishes hiswork. The vocals are average plus, but this track'sraw and raucous axe work is the true driving wheel, especially as heard on CD. If fooling around with realroots rock --and not some A&R guy's newly recruitedversion of same --is your pleasure, try the "Highway"on --it honks!!

Brian McDonald Group, "Life Is a DesperateBusiness", Columbia.... And speaking ofsubliminal, hear this one a few times and tell us whatpops into your mind. You'll notice nice guitars, workable vocals, and...toothpaste will pop into yourmind!! Why? The chorus cops the best part of CloseUp's "Get Closer" theme song. Hey, in over tenyears of doing this on practically a weekly basis, I'venever resorted to TV commercial tie-ins to interestradio in a record --but think about it. Hasn't that jinglehad A Rotation play for about three years now?Stranger things have happened.

Frozen Ghost, "Promises", Atlantic .... One ofthe highlights of their Philadelphia appearance on therecent tour translates beautifully to vinyl, n'est cepas? Few new bands know how to build a hugecascading hook like these clever Canadians --andthat Led Zep "All Of My Love" arrangement is a neatsubliminal hook as well. Nice female touch on thefadeout, too.

The Replacements, "Alex Chilton", Sire/VVB.... Whew!! Talk about a tough record!! I'll state once morethat "Alex Chilton" is one 3f the best new tracks on the street --and the best New Alternative to Mainstreamcrossover currently available. I'm happy to report that it was also the star performer in the "Great Bands ThatRadio Should Be Playing" :ategory at my Album Radio panel at the New Music Seminar. From Larry Dunn toJim Trapp to Oz Medina to Rick Carroll to John Hayes, and Rob Lipshutz, everyone was raving about this song. It's not weird, it's rock ard roll --and totally mainstream. Lighten up --check it out --and you'll honestly beimpressed. New at #92 this week, with current play on 30.

  • THEREPORT IMPACT TRACKS

The Hooters, "Satellite", Columbia.... It seems like WMMR has this baby in about a four hour orbit --andto our ears it stands up to the single, no prob. Our stats have it down for 10 adds, with "Karla With A K" theother active track, with WMMR, WPYX, WNEW and WYNF already in. Meanwhile, "Johnny B." goes 15-11 withour third best 20 Increases, 60 heavy reports, and 153 station close-out play. Big calls as well --with 20 Top 5mentions holding down the #6 Most Requested slot. This album will be with us for a longtIme"....WPDH's Pam Brooks comments, "For me thisIs how to make a Dead Lp for the rest of the non -Deadheads. Take all the great stuff which has nevermanaged to get onto vinyl over the years and put itall on one album. That way you get a collection oftotally strong material that everybody can grooveto"

Twisted Sister, "Hot Love", Atlantic.... Is itworking? Just ask WIOTs Jim Steel, who will tell you"This has developed Into a very real record veryquickly. "The Cure sits amazingly well with an AOR target audience and I don't needto look further than a 4,000 seat show I sold out two nights ago to proveit. Even more stunning is the fact that Dire Straits didn't sell out the samearena when 'Money For Nothing' was on the air at KTYD!"

  • THEHARD REPORT IMPACT TRACKS

Charlie Daniels, "Bogged Down In Love With You", CBS Associated.... At this rate, Charlie's gonnaget'em all before he's through! This week's wash turns up yet another 16 stations, making it 97 to date, withheavy air on KQRS, KSHE, WHCN, WKDF, WPLR, WRCN, WWCT and several more. "Bogged Down" jumps 35-29*, with increases from KSHE, WHTG, WAQX, WKWQ, WRIK and WWZU.

The Beat Farmers, "Dark Light", Curb/MCA.... The Beats bounce back with their second solid week --and the charts to match: "Dark Light" lands 26 adds, as 70 stations to date and increases at KZEL and KMBYmotivate this report's longest 82-56* underline. Greg Mull predicts, "The Beat Farmers are yet another in thelong line of hot roots rock bands, and this will be the track to break them at AOR. 'Riverside' did well last yearand after the success of Omar, Cruzados and other rock traditionalists, I think the AOR audience is primed."...

The Saints, "In The Temple Of The Lord", TVT.... Whoa!! Check that KGB add!! It's also new on KATP,WDHA, WHMD, WKWQ, and KEYX. The Hip Clip is right around the corner, so keep your ear to the ground!

TAKE TWOMotley Crue, "Wild Side", Elektra.... The fanspicked up on "Wild Side" as soon as the album hitthe stores, and reports of requests without airplayare not uncommon. We see it as the next logical stepafter "Girls", and 11 reporters take the bait and makethe move this week. WYNF, WAQX, KAZY, WHJY andWBYR all go for the gusto, as the total playingclimbs to 40. Chartwise, check out the dignified 85-71* HH jump.

Suzanne Vega, "Solitude Standing", A&M....Suzanne proved she could play ball with the big boyswhen she brought home "Luka", and now that top 40has taken over, we're ready to stand up for the titletrack. 28 reporters have already made the switch (8just this week) with WLUP, WIOQ, WONE, WBAB,WCCC, WDHA, WPYX and WOUR leading the way tothe dignified HH debut at 83*. The phones havepicked up on the new track too with WMAD, KGRQand WIZN reporting top requests, and with retailcontinuing to hang tough In many markets, how canyou hold back on one of the most significantbreakthrough projects of the year?

The Truth, "Until It Burns", I.R.S.... The Truthpick up a big 12 adds this week, as "Burns" startsthat kick into overdrive we've been waiting for. Newthis week at WRCN, WEGR. KRQR, KLOL, WLAV,KSHE and KAZY, and bolstered by increases at 3, thecut jumps 10 positions on the 'Hundred 65-66*, with atotal of 56 reporters now playing...

Joe Walsh, "In My Car", Full Moon/WB.... Joechaws through the competition snagging another 22adds (WRCN, KGB, KSHE, WAAF, WKDF, WPLR), for"Car" while the good vibrations of "Fun" find a homeat 5 stations this week. There's really no question inmany programmers' minds that this is the best workwe've gotten from Joe in quite some time. 59 totalnow go for gum "In My Car", moving the song 62-45*on the HH.

Dan Fogelberg, "It Doesn't Matter", FullMoon/Epic.... This one's got that slow and steadygrowth pattern that classics are made of, and the 6adds this week move that total playing to 40. WWCT'sPaul Nelson is cashing in on the hometownconnection, "That built in familiarity from local boyFogelberg has given us a great 25+ song".... KSHE,WZEW, and KZOQ all increase play this week, as"Matter" gains 4 positions on the chart HH 71-67*.

Roger Waters, "Sunset Strip", Columbia....Roger's solo projects always seem to hit when theweather's hot, so the big question here is, is it thesong or the temperature that makes "Sunset" such agreat summer driving tune? We dunno, but you canbe sure you'll be hearing "Radio K.A.O.S." all seasonas long as tops are down. A solid week, as 9 more goon "Strip" (WQFM, WLVQ, VVEGR, KILO, KBPI) withincreases at 10 behind the 42-35* HH chart move.

Richard Marx, "Should Have Known Better",Manhattan.... Next up for "Wasn't he an Eagle" Marxis this even tempo-ed number, and if you haven'tgotten the chance to check it out, now is the time. Weregistered 12 adds (KBPI, KRZQ, WDIZ, WLZR, WPLR,KLBJ) boosting the total on to 21 this week. If youstill don't believe that Richard is one of the hottestnew rockers out there, be sure to catch the band onone of the various club dates going on; the raves arephenomenal. And if he's expected at Yourtown,U.S.A., you've got to consider this truly exceptionaltrack; debuting at #91* this week.

Ace Frehley, "Rock Soldiers",MegaForce/Atlantic.... It was just last week, ChipHobart clued us into the true meaning behind"Soldiers".... "This song is the story of Ace and theComet's lives. I mean, this is what they're all about! We caught 'em live ourselves a few weeks ago, andwe know what 'cha mean, Chip! Hey, Rock and Rollis hard work! But, it's paying off for Ace as he picksup 8 adds this week (KAZY, KRZQ, WAQX, KNCN,WPDH, WYNF), as the total on climbs to 17. Withmomentum like this, you can expect a HH debut nextweek, no problem...

Mason Ruffner, "Dancin' on Top of theWorld", CBS Assoc.... It didn't take long forMason to find a home at rock radio with "GypsyBlood", and "World" is a natural followup. 'Twas a bigadd week with 20 coming In (KILO, KLOL, WLLZ,WSHE, KGB, WAQX) with 3 increases surgipg thetrack 89-64* HH for the second Biggest Mover of theWeek (some say second only to Sutton, who wasbusy with moves of his own this week at the NMS).47 are now playing, with KFOG, WHCN and WPLR allspinning in heavy rotation.

Fabulous Thunderbirds, "How Do You SpellLove", CBS Assoc.... "Stand Back" does evenmore damage to the top of the HH this week with abulleted 11-9 move that even Stevie would be proudof. But for programmers in the know, we're seeingmovement towards "Spell" with 17 already playing, 3of which (KILO, WLAV, WRDU) committed this week.Action, though early, has enough pull to debut thetrack HH 99*, and we expect follow through to be fastand furious.

Warren Zevon, "Detox Mansion", Virgin....Have you checked your sales report lately? Warrenhas truly made a comeback with "SentimentalHygiene", and your retail sheet if not your earsshould prove that there's plenty of Zevon's wit to goaround. "Detox" picks up 18 adds this week with DC101, WQFM, KRQR, KRXQ and WMGM coming in;Increases registering at WPYX, WDHA and WRCNcontribute to the quantum chart leap of 19 positionson the HH (80-611, as the cut comes in as the #5Biggest Mover of the week.

  • THIRD REPORT HARD ACTS TO FOLLOWTesla, "Rock Me To The Top", Geffen.... With 2 solid AOR tracks under their belt, Tesla comes back withyet another bonafide rocker, and the phones are already teslafying at KRXQ and KISS with top 5 response.Added this week at 13 (WAQX, WBYR, WRCN, WYNF, WTPA) as the total playing grows to 29. KSQY's JeffMichaels found the room for the next track, "'Modern' and 'Suzi' did so well in both requests and retail that wefelt we owed the band another shot".... "Rock" debuts this week #90* HH.

The Call, "I Don't Wanna'', Elektra.... All indicators point for major breaktrhough just around the corner as9 more take the plunge, Including WPDH, KLOS, WIXV, KZEW and WAPL, with 10 increases giving "Wanna"what it needed to climb 33-30* on the Hard Hundred. And week after week, reaction continues to focus onMichael Been's dynamic performance. WGLU's Brian Wolfe, "This current Lp is emoticn-packed rock to bereckoned with".... While KQDS' Wade Linder calls Been's vocals "Infective angry emotions in song"...109 arenow on with plenty of activity predicted for the coming weeks.

Jeff Paris "Saturday Night" Mercury/ PolyGram .... With Summer finally in full swing, a decent partytune like "Saturday" shouldn't have too much trouble getting the airtime it deserves, and so far so good as 6more find the room for Jeff with KATT, KAZY, KLAQ, WTPA and WRKI on this week, swelling the ranks to 48.KBAT's Dru Dawson calls It a "Definite blow the top off any Trans Am kinda tune"... We call it a natural fornighttime or anytime party song. A 7 position lump this week greets Jeff on the HH with a 76-69* advance.

The Silencers, "Painted Moon", RCA.... It's hard to keep a good song down, and the Silencers reel in anImpressive week with 13 more adds (KILO, KZAP, WKDF, WIOQ), 4 increases (KBPI, KMBY, KPOI), and as manyraves as there were spikey dcos at the NMS this week. KEZE's Brewski Michaels says it all, "I can't say enoughabout the Silencers. We feel It's the best crossover tune of the past several months. We're getting great 18-24female response out of it with 'Bitchin', 'RAD' and 'Totally Awesome' coming from the phone after it's beenplayed".... Total on climbs to 76, as the song continues it's impressive chart mauling with a 59-50* HHadvance.Robert Vaughn and the Shadows, "Justice", Exit/Island.... Robert fights his way to the top of theListening pile and earns 11 adds this week, as the onslaught of product subsides long enough for the Shadowsto strut their stuff in your music meeting. 18 total playing so far, with many pleased with what they hear, butunable to squeeze it in. We're convinced this is the kind of record you MAKE room for. Ears that hear includePam Edwards, David Anderson, Jim Trapp and KYYS' Ellen Gerdes....

Marillion, "Incommunicado", Capitol.... And the lovely Kelly Cruise comes up with yet anothercomparison for the band ti -is week, "Sounds like Yes fronted by Pete Townshend; instant phones"....Personally, we're starting to get into the other side of the comparison coin, where we catch the tail end of aGenesis song, and accuse them of sounding like Marillion! (Hey, we've got to find something to keep us busyduring Low Flying Duck season in Medford Lakes). But that's o.k., Fish doesn't mind. "Incommunicado"continues to dazzle and amaze with 28-24* on the HH, after 10 more add and 9 Increase. Who outthere Isn't on this cut? Come -.o this party soon, or you'll be missing one of the highlights of the year.

Little America, "That's The Way it Stays", Geffen.... KRIX's Joe Kelley predicts this cut "Should stay ontop once It gets there. We like it even better than 'Walk on Firem.... We're noticing a similarity in the growthpatterns between the two songs; a consistent build that doesn't overwhelm, but does make an impact; and weall know what happened when the first cut finally hit home.... How many weeks on the Most Requested? 7 morestations add this week, as the total grows to 39. On the charts, "Way" moves 77-72* HH, the album: 54-52.

Los Lobos, "La Bamba", WB.... Much to the distress of Motion Picture Execs, it's really not all that oftenthat a leadoff title track to a scon-to-be-released "Box Office Smash" does its job, i.e. catches the attention ofthe public and positively represents the movie in question, while zooming to the top of the charts. This timearound, Los Lobos and the movie "La Bamba" have worked as perfect vehicles for each other, creatingexcitement for the movie (which is pulling rave reviews), and exposing Los Lobos to a relatively new audience,on the Top 40 side. And talk about hooks, go ahead and confess that you've been making up words to fit thissong since you first laid ears on it. "La Bamba" picks up 11 adds this week with 16 increases doing a numberon the HH chart (39-31*). On the rave side, 'LIR's Larry Dunn tells us it's the "#1 most requested song andScreamer of the Week. A Summer hit or what?"....

Europe, "Carrie", Epic.... Does this band have drawing power or what? Just when you thought Elvis had leftthe building, they're back with the song we all heard, most liked and some played earlier in the life of thisalbum. 5 adds this week (WGLU, WKDF, WSHE, KRIX) 7 increases and phones ringing at 9 is just the beginningof the flurry of activity in store for this solid track.

Pete Bardens, "In Dreams", Cinema/Capitol.... Critical ears are picking up on Pete's latest foray, withKFOG, KYYS, WMMR, WKLS, WLLZ and KRXQ already on, and 5 adding this week. If you're leaningsophisto/adult at all, you know you should be on this quality piece. 23 are already playing as the cut advances100-95* on the HH..

  • HARD REPORT INDUSTRIAL NOISEWow. Back from New Music in the fabulous MarriottMarquis de Sade, in the heart of Manhattan's TheatreDistrict. That would explain all those painted ladies infront of the hotel. Like all good Marriotts, the firstthing you see is that portrait of the Old Man andJunior. Ever wonder why they're smiling? If you werea Mormom selling that much alcohol, you'd smile, too.Uh, I don't want to say there were a lot of Mexicanmeals, but the hotel had to install speed bumps infront of the rest rooms. Great doing shots and CartaBlancas with Kim Alexander and Slats, slot carracing with Howard Glassman in the Atlantic Suite, teaming up with Michael Abramson in the lounge(Michael: "The building is moving. The bar standsstill.") and closing the joint down with Kojan, Trapp,Dahlman and Hard. Nice panel, Bill.

I think Abramson spoke for a lot of us mid -to -upperthirties types when he said "I'm so proud of Bone. He's the first one of us to make it big." It's important.

    And now, the NOISE...

GABE THE BAPTISTE"This was the one I really, really wanted," says new

KBPI PD Gabe Baptiste. "So I went for It witheverything."

Gabe, who until three months ago was PD at WINZ-FM (now WZTA/Miami), also programmed WXLP/QuadCities, easily making him one of the first Children of aLesser Quad.

When I informed him that he had made the mistakeof going to a town with no baseball, Gabe noted thatthey get the Royals on cable. Oh boy, hemorholds atthird base. He then launched into a death -bed HarryCarey that makes him my favorite Impressionist sinceRenoir. Cubs fans would need a voice print to tell thedifference between the two.

"We've got to start leaning on our heritage more,"says Gabe, referring to Step 1.

The station has a new morning team In place: JREdwards (not to be confused with John Edwards, the MD, uh, make that the Asst. PD since last Friday)and Steve Nikazy. Yeah, I noticed that spelling, too.N-i-KAZY. Better change that one in a hurry.

On their feet: KISS' T -Bone Scheppke, Gary Moore,KISS' Debby Alcocer, Donna Keller and JimmyChristopher. On their knees: Virgin's Bonnie Stacyand Jeff Naumann.

DESERT TOPPINGSIn other Sandusky PD news, you can now call the

Phoenix ARB a Geiger Counter -- Chuck Geiger isthe programmer at KDKB.

"Yeah, 'Acting' PD, but they gave me the raise, I gotthe cards and they moved me into the office," laughsChuck.

"I love the company, but a couple of years ago theytried to run all their AOR's like KBPI and it wasnothing but trouble," admits Chuck. "Everybody wentouta here in trucks."

"Well, perception is reality. They want us to playrock & roll. The call letters signify that. That is whatwe are doing," says Geiger. "Hey, (Programming VPJeff) Sattler's put the fixtures back on the stationfrom when it was successful -- the things Jeff, andhis predecessor, Jon Sinton -- had done to makethis place happen..."

Hey, the place is the Carrot."And the Carrot is playing rock & roll again," says

the adamant Geiger.Geiger came back to AOR last year, after a stint in

CHR. He had stops in Denver at K -Peak and KAZY,St. Louis at KWK and we seem to remember one inKansas City as well.

THE BREAK FROM HELL!!!! Sam Kinison In theWBCN studios with Parentau. AAAAAAGGHHHH!!!!And really, just who is their decorator?

SUNRISE SEMESTERThough the ink hasn't hit the paper yet, the

WAPI/Birmingham morning team of Brian Phelpsand Mark Thompson will go to LA, giving KLOS itsfirst real, honest -to -God AM drive in nearly a year.

Look for them to hit town in August, and be on theair in September.

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUSTKMMX/San Antonio has gone AC."It's the completion of the transformation," notes

PD Lee Roy Hansen."We had gone as far as we could go with Adult

AOR. The cume Just sat at 60,000 while everybodyelse knocked down 120,000. We couldn't go on doingthe same thing -- there just wasn't enoughaudience," adds Hansen.

"People would come in from Dallas or Houston andsay 'I wish we had one of these in our town.' Butmaking it happen here was just too tough," says LeeRoy.

THE RED HOUSE "THERE IS A WINDOW"(RANDOM) The album debut from New Jersey's RedHouse puts the "new kid on the block" cliche to bedwith some of the most tempting new sounds found onthe Indio scene. They draw on a wide array of stringwork and make it fly as Tony Stives and Bruce Tunkelunleash enough modern melodies to unhinge eventhe most jaded listener. It won't be long before theA&R community does a double take. With a naturalfeel for 80's vox -pop hooks, this group boasts anundeniable musical chemistry for arranging formula totheir advantage in "Rain"; "Chances"; "ThisNightmare" and "Pray". Watch the piano treatmentstrike the right key at your station. Contact: RandomRecords, 330 S. It's time to continue the commotion, and re-focus on their praised performances with "51stState", "The Hunt", "Chinese Whispers" or "MyCountry".FRENCH, FRITH, KAISER, THOMPSON "LIVE,LOVE, LARF, LOAF" (RHINO) This awesomefoursome brings together a track record ofcollaboration, and experience together from the farreaches of the earth, as they launch experimentalrock patterns toward an unknowing but soon to bereceptive listenership. Within the confines of John(Capt. Beefheart) French's smooth but erraticrhythms, guitarists Richard Thompson (coming offhis stunning "Daring Adventures" Lp) and HenryKaiser (Golden Palominos/Crazy Backwards Alphabet)swing and pick through a guitar improv refreshercourse in peak form. Add one Fred Frith who wenteven further underground after the Henry Cow eraand it's cause for celebration - but just a spin will do.Cut your teeth on the off center version of "Surfin'U.S.A" or delve into the unknown with "Where's TheMoney"; or quiet calm of "Bird In God's Country".

"New Direction" Is at over 30 so far (KEYX,KRCK, KTCL, KABL, WBCN, WEQX, KROQ, WFNX,KJET) with "Lips Like Sugar" and Bed Bugs" gainingearly reaction shots. Deb Brady at WXXP knows,"The new Lp is fabulous! Not a weak track so don'toverlook It".... Lenny Bloch, WRCN sez "If you spendsome time with Echo And The Bunnymen you'll findroom. These guys have painted a masterpiece." Atour is planned for an early fall appearance of Echo,New Order and Gene Loves Jezebel, all on one hotticket.

PAUL KELLY AND THE MESSENGERS"GOSSIP" (A&M) With all of the strong materialfound on Paul's stateside debut, this one could windup as Record Of The Week for issues to come."Darling It Hurts" straight forward approach and"organic" properties makes this one track that's off toa flying start in the AOR spectrum. New at 29*Alternative/New at 81* Hard Hundred as 23 stationsgive it the go for a total of 42 now playing. JonathanRosen, KEYX was "Impressed with the debut. It hasinstant commercial appeal with subtlety that remindsme of early Tom Petty material."

THE BEARS (PMRC)Take a look at another success story that started withthe stations who report here as "Fear Is NeverBoring" tackles a "Hard" Hundred moving 93-76* thisweek. Adrian Belew has carved his niche firm andsolid and comparisons as sketchy as Men At Workhave surfaced! Now at #11 hard Alternative....WOUR's Tom Starr points out, "Programmers whorecognize creative brilliance good enough tochallenge an audience and win are taking notice ofThe Bears."

THAT PETROL EMOTION "BABBLE"(POLYG RAM) This Lp solves the piece to themusical puzzle: audiences will go for the psychedelicmixtures laced with a rhythm impulse for goodmeasure throughout. "Big Decision" is at WLIR,WRVU, WFNX, WHFS, WTOS, WXXP, KEYX, KTCL,WHTG, WRAS and KRCK where Paul Kriegler says,"We're all over this one." Building to 22* this week -don't stop now.

TSOL "HIT AND RUN" (ENIGMA)It's a shame that Lp's which defy categorization tendto get left behind, but the core stations supportingthis fine band still hold a firm commitment to "TheName Is Love" and have found obvious secondarytracks to compliment. Back to reality: It's at KEYX,WRIK, KLAQ, WEQX, WTOS, KISS, KNAC, WBNY,WOXY, KABL, KRCK, WRVU, WWVU and more.

The last time the PartyNinjas struck It was also In L.A. and featuredperformances by Paul Stanley, Tommy Lee, andmembers of Autograph. At the most recentappearance the all star lineup played such classics as"Jai'house Rock", "Whole Lotta Rosie", and"Jailbreak".

METAL NEWSMetailiCa Is currently mixing their new album. It willbe an EP that will apparently be released sometime inthe fall. Also, another twist is that the record willcontain all covers. I'll bet you're asking yourself thesame question that I am - Will "Am I Evil" and"Blitzkrieg" finally be released domestically? They arecovers, right? Sounds logical, right? Hate todisappoint you, but you'll have to wait and seejust like the rest of us.

Mercenary Records will be releasing four albumswithin the next three months. The first will be fromCanada's Kick Axe. If you recognize the name, it'sprobably because this will not be their first Americanrelease. The band released "Welcome To The Club"on Epic Records back in early 1986. Now comes"Rock The World" which features a cover ofFleetwood Mac's "The Chain".

In September, Mercenary plans to release albumsfrom New Jersey's Attacker, Connecticut's SacredOath and New York's Meanstreak, an all -girl metaloutfit. For Sacred Oath and Meanstreak, these will betheir first albums. For Attacker, this release will marktheir second. The first was an album entitled "BattleAt Helm's Deep" which came out on Metal BladeRecords.

Combat Records has a new National Press andPublicity Director. His name Is Ken Kriete and he is aveteran of the underground metal scene. Ken tellsme that Combat will be releasing a new concert videoentitled "The Ultimate Revenge Part II". The full-length video will feature three of Combat's mostpopular acts: Exodus, Nuclear Assault, andHeathen. The concert will take place at the CountryClub in Los Angeles in late August.

Speaking of videos, Metal Blade's head slasher, BillMetoyer, produced the brand new DRI video at arecent gig at the Ritz in New York. Metoyer called Itone of the most violent concerts he has ever seen.Love them bumps and bruises, don't you Bill?

Canada's Annihilator have signed a majormanagement deal and will immediately beginsearching for a label. According to a well noted NewYork underground expert, if no deal is had the bandwill begin recording an album that will allegedly befinanced by their new management and released ontheir own label.

Fates Warning still does not have a vocalist. If youthink you have the vocal chords to front this veteranoutfit, contact Metal Blade Records.

One of the hardcore/thrash crossovers top outfits,Hirax, have reformed with the original members allreturning. Original members included JohnMorales, Scott Owens, Jerry Manardo, andKaton DePena.

Lizzy Borden's new disc will hit the streets InAugust. The vinyl was produced by Max Norman(Ozzy Osbourne, Malice, Y & T) who says that thealbum Is going to be a killer. He is currently mixingthe album In Connecticut.

Germany's Destruction are apparently searching fora new deal. They are currently In the states playing astring of dates. It's alleged that their deal withSteamhammer in Germany has expired. Should notbe long before this dynamite force inks a deal.

Omen and Liege Lord are out on the roadtogether, Speaking of Victory, they have justremixed their EP with Michael Wagoner (Raven,Accept) entitled "The Check Is In The Mail". Victoryfeatures vocalist Charlie Huhn who has workedwith Michael Schenker and Ted Nugent. The bandalso features ex -Accept axeman Herman Franks.

Finally, here is something that will leave you with agood taste in your mouth. Rumor has it that MSG(McCauley -Schenker Group) will be going out on tourwith Whitesnake following the completion ofWhitesnake's Motley Crue support slot. I don't knowabout you, but this sounds more tasty than MotleyCrue/Whitesnake. Until next tine.

  • HARD REPORT MUSIC NOW!They felt they were a 1970s' band and their fansdidn't care about them anymore," Cohn says. "I keptfinding out that people love the Doobie Brothers.Through the tour, the band saw that there was stillan audience that loved their music, plus that theygot along well together. There also was someconcern about how well they would play, especiallywith so many musicians on stage. Most of thereviews said they were better than they wereoriginally." Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons,Tiran Porter, Michael Hossack and JohnHartman are all very interested in the reunion,Cohen says. He doesn't expect Michael McDonald tobe part of the reunion effort. "They all have their owncareers, but the vehicle to get them into nationalstatus is the Dooble Brothers," Cohen adds. "Thetask before them is to come up with songs that wereas good as they ever did. Most of them don't need abuck."

Here's the latest music news Live From Londoncourtesy of CFNY, Toronto and our exclusive reporterLee Carter. Lee can be heard on CFNY's "SundayMusic Magazine" program and on "Live FromLondon" aired Wednesday evenings.

Last Saturday night, Island Records held their 25thBirthday Party at the legendary Pinewood Studios, 30miles south of London. 7,000 guests drankthemselves under the table to the live sounds ofJulian Cope, Troublefunk, The Christians, RobertPalmer, Eric Clapton and Aswad. Although therumours that U2 might be there turned out to beuntrue, they still provided the undoubted highlight ofthe evening by being beamed in live from theirconcert In Paris. Three hours of the event were alsoshown live on British television. All the Island actsbut Grace Jones made some contribution to theevent. Even Millie Small, the I5 -year -old Jamaicanwho label chief Chris Blackwell brought over toEngland in 1964 to record "My Boy Lollipop" waspresent, nestling her daughter in her arms, looking itmust be said, rather puzzled by the wholeproceedings. As it was their very first record, Islandhave chosen to re-release "My Boy..." with a specialIsland 25 video. In Interview from Paris, The Edgehinted that the next U2 album may well be a live one,but promised that the majority of the material wouldbe new songs. A remarkable film about U2 was alsoshown concerning their ill-fated attempt to make avideo for "Where The Streets Have No name" on theroof of a liquor store in a sleazy neighbourhood inLos Angeles. As has been well documented, severalthousand people got wind of this and the L.A. Policeshut them down. Being a fly on the wall while a bigfat cop was arguing with their tour manager wasterrific fun. Of great Interest to those who wonderabout the disappearance of lesser spotted pop starswas an interview with Usaf Islan - formerly CatStevens who turned out to be a quiet, humourous, introspective man who explained how he had tradedIn trying to find what he was looking Nor (the theme ofmost of his songs) with actually finding it. He lookedcontented and happy. There was archive footageaplenty: Traffic, Free, Bob Marley and Bad Companyto name a few and Tom Waits and Joe Cocker sentmessages from America. Apart from the nice tingesof the Island story, one may wonder why the Britishmedia has become so obsessed with Island 25, whenafter all it could be said that it is Just another recordlabel. It comes down to British national pride. Sincethe late seventies Island's only major competitor as awholly British label has been Virgin. But Island canstill make the claim that they are the only privately -owned Independent British record company that cantake on the big multinationals on
