“Blue Skies Smilin’ On”...Region 21 in Pasadena, CA! Months of prep-aration have gone into this weekend by quartets, chorus members and directors who will all appear on stage. The RMT would especially like to recognize those behind the scenes–the Regional Convention Steer-ing Committee, who’ve worked for months to make this weekend a memorable and exciting event for us all. In addition to our own regional choruses we’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the newly chartered Ho-nolulu Blend Show Chorus directed by Bonnie McKibben as they com-pete for evaluation. We wish them, and all competitors, pomaika’i (good fortune/good luck) this weekend. We would also like to extend a warm welcome to our judging panel as we all enjoy “Noth-in’ But Blue Skies!”

This weekend brings us to the end of our fis-cal year. We’ll see many leadership changes in our chapters with board and team elections. We ap-preciate the time and efforts given unselfishly by the outgoing leaders and look forward to the opportuni-ties of personal growth and change for each chapter. Your RMT looks forward to working with each of you!

Coordinators on the RMT will remain the same for 2012-2013. We’re looking forward this year to serving the membership, continuing to provide support to you and bringing many excellent educational pro-grams to you. Finally, we would like to extend our appreciation to the International Board of Directors for reconsidering the change in our regional boundary in 2013.

Enjoy your weekend in Pasadena and we’ll see you on stage!

Spring! Time to celebrate the rebirth of your chorus and its mem-bership. At this time of the year each chorus should do some “spring cleaning.” Reflect on the past year and revisit your plans (short-term and long-term) for the future. Take time and discuss your successes for the past year and what you can do this upcoming year to make things better. How was your “Global Open House”? Incorporate this plan into a regularly scheduled membership drive. After the dust settles from the weekend, evaluate your Competition Scores and determine what your chorus needs to do to improve their musical product. If you didn’t com-pete, then that is the first thing to put on your calendar for 2012-2013. Spring Contest next year is April 4-7. (Be there, it’s part of the game!) After you have determined what your chorus needs, make a plan to ed-ucate your members. First stop should be “Camp Ringing Pines”, August 10-12. OMG! Lori Lyford, Pam Pieson, Darlene Rogers, and Kim Vaughn! Need I say more? Be sure to include fun events in your plans for the year, like putting together a double quartet for summer regional. There’s always time for “S’More Singing.” So what are you waiting for, time to “Spring” into action!

NOTE: The region has decided to retire the NOTE-able Woman Award. It is being replaced with a new program that will recognize those who participate above and beyond the norm. Be on the lookout for RINGO!

Membership Coordinator, Chris Robertson

Education Coordinator, Jana GutensonWelcome back to Pasadena! As we celebrate another year in our lives

as Sweet Adelines, we in Region 21 have so much to be thankful for! I am so grateful to the International Board for hearing our well-reasoned request to keep our Albuquerque choruses in the fold! Even with these choruses, however, Region 21 will be one of the smallest in overall mem-bership counts after the Harmonic Progression changes are complete. Despite the challenges we face, I firmly believe that we remain one of the richest in resources, and it is my goal that we continue to offer the best in education right here in Region 21!

Are you ready for “S’more Singing,” together? Make sure your summer plans include a weekend in beautiful, cool Prescott, AZ, August 8-10 as Region 21 returns to Camp Ringing Pines! Our guest faculty is vocal expert Darlene Rog-ers, Dale Syverson’s voice teacher and director of the 2012 Region 10 silver med-alist chorus, Texas Harmo-ny. Our camp counselors, Kim Vaughn, Lori Lyford, and Pam Pieson return to direct us in color choruses featuring the iconic barber-shop classic songs, Sweet Adeline, Back in the Old Routine, and Everything Old Is New Again. Although we

regret having to cancel the June Directors’ Seminar, we are excited to add a full day of Director and Musical Leader education beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, August 10 at Camp Ringing Pines. Registration will open for Camp Ringing Pines online by May 15. See you there!

Team Coordinator, Sue Bowdoin

Out in the west Texas town of El Paso, there is a chorus that loves to sing so...that is what we did! For the holidays we sang for local malls, a church where the neighbors could drop by and have a bite to eat and listen to some Christmas carols to lift their spirits, and for our own

“Sweet Sounds of Christmas” program. In January we had a marvelous global guest night as our welcomed guests en-joyed our “teaching the world to sing” in four-part harmony. February found chorus mem-bers singing love songs all over El Paso. And in March we were

honored to sing at “The Arts at Union Plaza” sponsored by El Paso Arts Resource Department. Best of all, we were privileged to welcome our newest members Sara Gonzales and Irene Rivas to our chorus. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my chorus for all of their hard work throughout the year to continue to grow and improve our chorus. It has been a privilege and an honor to be your president this year.

Harborlites started 2012 with a party: our Global Open House! A large group of guests visited to learn more about barbershop, watch a “mini show,” and ring some chords singing tags. We received great feed-back and several guests are now in the audition process.

Our seventh “Diva Day” Young Women in Harmony festival was held at the beginning of February. Over 250 high school singers and teachers

spent the day learning bar-bershop ba-sics under the direction of guest faculty Gary Lewis. “Diva Day” c u l m i n a te d in a perfor-mance featur-ing the young

singers, Road Trip, Dolce, Charmed, Tenacious Q, Harborlites, and a finale with every performer united under Pam Pieson’s direction to sing “We Are Family.”

Our sixth Harborlites Harmony Golf Classic will be held May 18th at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills. It’s a fun afternoon of golf, dinner, a silent auction, and quartet performances. Come to play or come for dinner — you’ll have a great time!

For information on any Harborlites event, visit our website at www.harborliteschorus.org.

Harborlites has been honored to be the 2011 Region 21 Champion Chorus and we look forward to serving as your assistance chorus. We wish all 2012 contestants a peak performance on stage in Pasadena. We send special good luck wishes to “our” quartets competing in the Re-gion 21 contest: Aloha Spirit, C2C, Cadence, Charmed, Dolce, Ms. Cellaneous, and Passion; as well as “our” quartets in the Region 11 con-test: Happy Hour, Hot Topic, OMG!!, and Road Trip.

Our Guest Night in January was truly a joyful experience! There were 12 visitors and our chorus members enjoyed sharing our love of barbershop and songs. Refreshments were served and we had the opportunity to mingle and perform for them!

Our election of officers took place recently and our new chapter officers for 2012-2013 are: President Kathy Bowman, Vice-President Lesly Bonnett, Treasur-er Phyllis Parkell, and Secretary Karen Pritchard Choy. If these names sound familiar, they should be...they are back for more!

We are in the process of redoing our chorus website in order to make it more streamlined and accessible for everyone.

Yes, it is THAT time of the year again; spring is upon us and so is our regional competition. We had a truly inspiring retreat with Master Director and super energizer Vickie Maybury. Chris Robertson has also been visiting and working with us, especially with our faces! Our director, Bonnie TerKeurst, has been invited to conduct the Mass Sing this year, so, in addition to prac-ticing our competition selections, we have been looking over our Region 21 songs, too. We wish everyone a positive experience on stage; see you in Pasadena!

Our chorus was thrilled by the recent Sweet Adelines International Board decision allowing us and Enchant-ed Mesa Show Chorus to remain in Golden West Re-gion 21! We celebrated with a special cake provided by co-director Andi Rostel.

Thanks to a very successful first annual show, our cho-rus was able to purchase its own set of risers. Unfortu-nately, storage has become a problem, so we are looking into potential new rehearsal spaces.

Two of our chorus quartets, Southwest Edition and Tickled Pink, participated in a city-wide Singing Val-entines fund raiser co-sponsored by all the barbershop choruses in Albuquerque.

We’ve been working very hard on our contest pack-age and are being coached by a fabulous barbershopper, Tony Sparks, the tenor of Paramount (Rocky Mountain District Novice Quartet Champions). We’ll be having a Friends and Family Performance on April 17th with both Paramount and Southwest Edition as our guest quartets.

Rhythm and passion truly capture the essence of the music and movement in the rehearsal room of the San Diego Chorus. With Master Director Kim Vaughn at the helm, the San Diego Chorus has set a course for excel-lence at this year’s contest. The chorus looks forward to this fun and music-filled weekend each year when we get the opportunity to share our energetic music with our sisters in harmony.

In addition to competing on the risers, the San Diego Chorus is amped for the quartet contest where we have three new quartets from our ranks to cheer on: Chor-dial, C2C and Cadence!

We are also excited for reigning Region 21 quartet champions, UnLimited, to take the stage. This will be

As singers, we know that winter songs evoke images of snowfall blanketing the slumbering earth. This couldn’t be farther from reality for our winter in the desert!

We had the good fortune to perform for appreciative audiences more than once a month since November. A gracious invitation to perform at the Barbershop Harmony Society’s 2012 International Midwinter Convention in Tucson in January was a true

honor and a thrill. We also enjoyed performing with the Spirit of Phoenix Chorus on their March 24 show, “Spirit and Sweets!” at the beautiful Orpheum Theater in downtown Phoenix.

We enjoyed a phenomenal turnout at our three weeks of Global Open House events where visitors were assigned mentors, participated in educational classes taught by International Faculty Lori Lyford, and learned a new

song with the chorus. In February, we hosted our first annual Golf Harmony

Classic which was successful beyond our goals. With our own Janice Blake at the helm, there was fun for all includ-ing on-course contests, a chance to win a new Camaro,

raffles, grand prizes and, of course, singing. Laughter and fun floated over the beautiful desert hills, and we look forward to a repeat next February.

On September 22, we celebrate 50 years of harmony at the Chandler Center for the Arts with a show and celebration with fellow International Champions Maxx Factor. We’d love to have you join us!

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone in Pasadena. Please join us as we present our outgoing champion class, Share the Joy, on Friday at 2 p.m.

Five new members from Open Sing/Global Open House! We are proud to announce that this October 2011 through January 2012 our Open Sing and Global Open House added five new members to our Chorus. We welcome (from L to R) Evon Flag (Bari), Linda Benefield (Tenor), Joan Baird (Bass), Ginny Abushanab (Bass), and Kathy Shattuck (Bari).

Once again, the Pacific Belles Chorus is hum-ming with activity! One of our youngest mem-bers will chair a Summer Show event on June 16th and we are really excited about the fresh ideas she is bringing. At this show, we will pres-ent our Annual Musician Scholarship. We are busy searching for the student who best fits the ideals and guidelines for this award.

On September 15th we will host a “Goodtime Barbershop & Variety Show” that will feature several quartets, some specialty acts, and, of course, our chorus. It is sure to be a unique and

Life after Houston has indeed continued on. In fact, non-stop!Christmas in Prescott was once again a special time when we truly enjoyed

the Acker Musical Showcase evening of non-stop music throughout our magi-cal downtown Courthouse Square. Our three hours at the Historic Hassyam-pa Hotel flew by with standing-room-only audiences all night. Additionally, it is not unusual for us to have

multiple “bookings” during this season which this year greatly helped replenish our treasury.

January’s Open House Event brought us many guests and five new members. Yes, we are growing! Then it was Valen-tine’s Day, which again took us out into the community with “special deliveries” and, this year, two special concerts.

We are thrilled to have launched a new look to our web-site. The home page and members-only area is aglow with new pictures and many helpful tools. Check it out! www.sotpchorus.org.

Contest preparations maintain their presence in our weekly rehearsals including vocal education, coaching with Jana Gutenson and Chris Robertson, exploring our craft from many varying postures and all the things we do to grow as singers. You know the drill! It’s California (Pasadena) here we come! And, drum roll...we have graduated into Div AA! We are looking forward to the excitement of contest, and, sharing the stage with all of you.

Best wishes to all chorus and quartet competitors and friends from Hawaii!Let the rafters ring with the overtones and musical magic of our convention events.—Suzy Lobaugh

The chorus is already working on learning new songs for our annual show (Nov. 17th) and our directors have promised us two new songs for next year’s competition. We’re also excited about presenting a workshop on bar-bershop harmony at the annual Albuquerque Folk Fes-tival on June 2nd and looking forward to seeing many of you in August at Summer Seminar.

Best of luck to all the competitors at Region 21’s an-nual contest – we’re proud to be part of such a wonder-ful and talented group of women!

—Diane Taggart

This is not the end for UnLimited. They have their sights set on Denver and the 2012 Sweet Adelines International Quartet Contest. Un-Limited is excited to welcome San Diego Cho-rus’ own Reema Hayashida as their new lead. While they are big shoes to fill, they are fabu-lously sparkly purple shoes that she will certainly do justice to!

It’s going to be a great contest and we can’t wait to experience the magic and harmony of our ma-jestic region!

Region 21 was fortunate to begin the year with an RMT In-Region Training and Leadership Workshop with the brilliant Master Faculty Sharon Babb. “Leadership with a Twist” was held at the Embassy Suites in Tempe, AZ and featured a full Friday of advanced and targeted

training for current (and prospective) members of the Regional Management Team covering topics from director recruitment and training to increasing membership diversity. Sharon also presented

the plan for the Global Open House, musical and adminis-trative classes, and closed the weekend coaching Houston-bound Song of the Pines.

Members of Region 21 re-turned to Tempe for Summer Camp. “Camp Blue Agave” fea-tured Head Camp Counselor Renée Porzel and our own In-ternational Champion Chorus directors, Kim Vaughn, Lori Lyford, and Pam Pieson serv-ing as faculty. Seminar par-ticipants were divided into “color” choruses (Blue Agave, Lime, Pomegranate), worked

on a song with their assigned director, and per-formed on the Sunday morning session. A spe-cial “choreo” track offered specialized classes and allowed visual team members to shadow Renée as she coached the color choruses. To remove the stigma attached to learning cho-reography, Renée taught an entire routine to “Billy-a-Dick,” which was practiced and then performed on Sunday morning. Summer Semi-nar also included the always-hilarious double quartet contest, membership awards, admin-istrative classes, an all-day Arrangers Develop-ment Program workshop, and the International Competitors Showcase.

After the International Convention and Competition in Houston, Region 21 invited the dynamic duo of Master Directors Bev Miller and Molly Huffman, co-directors fo the Capital City Chorus, to help the singer in you “Make Your Mark.” The MusicFest 2011 theme played out in classes emphasizing both vocal and ad-ministrative skills.

To jump start the new year, Club 21 hosted their Singers Workshop in San Bernardino, CA in January 2012. Members of Club 21 provid-ed Individual Voice Instruction (IVI), quartet coaching, vocal and visual classes, and intro-duced the techniques and technology of remote coaching. Some lucky quartet participants were

As part of its restructuring plan for the Sweet Adelines International regions announced last Fall, the International Board had planned to remove the northern half of New Mexico from Region 21. Our RMT, with the written support of four choruses, officially petitioned the International Board to allow us to keep our existing regional borders and keep northern New Mexico as part of Region 21.

We are happy to share the following letter from the International Board:

Dear Golden West Region 21 Regional Management Team:

The International Board of Directors met this past weekend in Tulsa, OK, and thoroughly discussed the boundary changes once again. We took careful note of your well thought-out request that two choruses, Enchanted Mesa Show Chorus and Route 66 Chorus, located in northern New Mexico, remain in Re-gion 21 and I am pleased to tell you that we have granted your request.

The additional information that you provided gave us an insight into what they and you would be facing if they were moved to Region 8.

We trust that this news will be as happily received as it has been to deliver! (A hard copy of this letter will be mailed to you for your records.)

Thank you for bringing the additional information to our attention.

Red RockAppella’s 5th annual holiday show, held on December 4th at the Sedona United Methodist Church, was a wonderful success. As has become our annual custom, we were joined on stage for several songs by ladies from our community and also by several of the ladies from Song of the Pines Chorus. We were also joined this year by Scottsdale members Arline Lonon, who lives in Flagstaff, and Claire Westberg.

The audience truly en-joyed the performances by A La Mode quartet from Song of the Pines (Deb Sanders, Rosemary Baltensberger, Penny Cimo, Lauren William-

son), and Harmony on the Rocks, the Sedona chapter of Barbershop Harmony Society. Our featured guest, The Velvet Frogs, 2011 Far Western District Senior Quartet Champs, were quite entertaining with their particular brand of humorous barbershop. RRA would like to congratulate them on their subsequent 4th Place International Senior Quartet medals at the BHS mid-winter convention in Tucson, January 2012.

And while we are on the subject of congratulations – we would also like to extend them to Suzy Lobaugh and our sister chorus, Song of the Pines, for achievement of their Division A

Our 25th Anniversary Celebration Show was an enormous success! Quar-tets Variety and Contempo reunited on stage. We brought back many favor-ite chorus songs, utilizing quartets, small groups and soloists to spread the fun and variety, entertaining the full house. Thank you Beth Parks and Fran Tuell for co-producing and all of TDH for such great performances!

There were several holiday sing-outs. We opened and closed La Encanta-da’s holiday performance series, sang for country clubs, resorts and RV parks around Tucson. In February TDH opened the world famous Tucson Rodeo Parade and we traveled to Green Valley to sing for the New England Club.

The chorus annual rummage sale raises funds and helps out families in the

community who purchase donated goods for bargain prices. A big thank you to committee chairs Gloria Small and M Craig and all who have donated time and effort as well as goods for the sale.

Well it’s that time again, off to contest with a new ballad this year and a new quartet! Footnotes has materialized right off the TDH risers. Fran Tuell, Car-rie Hall, Penny Starr and Rhonda Benhase will compete together for the first time. You’ll see that familiar face Karen Meade from One Voice and Havin’ a Blast’s Molly Gerbi, Elissa Fazio, Eileen Fernstrom and Gail Trader at contest again too. Break those nails ladies!

Thank you TDH Chorus coaches: Jeff Baker, Patty Cobb Baker and Melanie Wroe.—Rhonda Benhase

To start off the holiday season, our imaginative show committee of Sue Bowdoin, Kathy Parnall, and Sharon Ormiston took us on a journey into the No Snow Zone. Eventually we found a way to “Let it Snow.” Lit-tle did we know real snowflakes would fall later that night! We rounded out the season by singing at local shopping centers and BioPark River of

three weeks straight (thank goodness it was after our show!), we post-poned our Christmas party until January. It was a nice way to bring in the New Year by enjoying social time, potluck meal, and gift exchange before starting rehearsal. We also welcomed to the fold two new Sweet Adelines, Ceptembre Tedesco and Anita Treloar. In January we partici-pated in SAI global membership month and offered “Sweet! Harmony” interactive sessions of barbershop basics, choreography, and tag-sing-ing, for guests and members alike.

The local barbershop community sent many quartets out and about to serenade for Singing Valentines, a successful fundraiser combining the efforts of the women’s and men’s choruses. The following weekend our chorus retreated to Santa Fe for coaching with the amazing team of Patty Cobb and Jeff Baker. They gave us a creative way to improve our vocal production with a new meaning for swooning. Then in March, we worked with local barbershop director and coach, Tony Sparks.

Mission Viejo Chorus Laguna Niguel, CA

When have we had a busier year? Our chorus had 9 Christmas per-formances in 13 days. We warmed our audiences with a cheery holiday repertoire and warmed our hearts celebrating the season together in song. In January, we took our Harmony Cruise Show on the road and presented an evening of stellar entertainment. We adored singing for The Meadows, and they reciprocated with four standing ovations! We spent February 11th spreading Valentine joy across the country with our singing grams.

We shared a productive week-end in February at our chorus re-treat. Laura Pallas coached us all day Saturday and Sunday morn-ing. We learned just how much capability this chorus has in our talent show on Saturday evening. Laughter and song filled the night. (We were finally asked by hotel man-agement to keep it down!) Stan, our unparalleled director, shares in our love and laughter—sometimes outlasting all of us! We love you, Stan.

In September, Westwind Harmony Chorus welcomed back our summer vacationers and winter residents. We started getting busy mid-month for our POPS. We were excited to see one another and welcomed fifteen guests to our meeting place at Word of Life Lutheran Church in Surprise, Arizona. Our fall season brought us six new members to bring our membership to thirty-four.

In December we had our annual Christmas concert for family and friends. We visited two facilities as a community outreach to our seniors and bought some holiday cheer to those away from home. We sang eighty-five holiday grams, had a potluck and gift

exchange at Mar-sha Shaw’s home.

January we were invited to sing at First Methodist Church in Sun City. Our retreat at Lake Pleasant was the last week in January and we

were fortunate to have Jana Gutenson coach us. How lucky are we to have friends and coaches from Scottsdale and our Cathie Sturm as our Director. We are growing in fellowship, numbers and in barbershop harmony while working hard and still having fun.

We are excited that this month we had two events that we sang at locally. One was in Wickenburg with a wonderful turnout in spite of the hail and rain. Rain in Arizona? Westwind is enjoying the opportunities to share our music with different concerts and the experience and encouragement we are receiving to strive to excel in our art.

SOH chorus is happy to welcome our new director, Sharon Orsi. She is a member and associate director of Mission Viejo Chorus and has been with them over ten years. She has sung in Sweet Adelines for over 20 years and has also sung baritone in several quartets. Over the years, she has been privileged to also sing with the Harborlites and Inland Empire choruses. While in the Harborlites Chorus in 2005, she won an In-ternational gold medal in Indianapolis. She is cur-rently pursuing her Director’s Certification in the Region 21 DCP program.

Sharon has lived in Mission Viejo for the past 15 years and also grew up there. She was first in-troduced to barbershop harmony by her mother who sang with Mission Viejo Chorus for nearly 20 years. When Sharon is not singing, she and her husband own and operate Mission Mortgage of California.

She says, “I am truly honored to have the opportunity to direct the Sounds of Harmony Chorus...with dedication and determination, I know we can achieve our goals and realize our dreams!”

We members of SOH would also like to acknowledge our former director, Beth Van Gelder, who directed us with dedication for the past 3 years. “Thank you!”

We send our best wishes to all the quartets and chorus competitors this spring. We’ll be there cheering for you all!

Fiesta is gearing up with great anticipation for the regional compe-tition in Pasadena. We’ve had a season with “Nothin’ But Blue Skies.” Our fabulous new director, Cary Burns, has taken us through a boot camp of learning and relearning the barbershop sound, providing us with positive reinforcement at every turn. We have received some great coaching and encouragement too from Jana Gutensen. We’ve had sev-eral all-day rehearsals to learn and perfect our competition numbers and choreography.

On the SAI news side, we are so happy the board has decided to keep Enchanted Mesa Show Chorus and Route 66 Sound Chorus in Re-gion 21. We love hearing you sing!

On the membership side, we are proud to say we have brought four new members into our fold, and have re-recruited four other former Fiesta members.

We had our first per-formance under Cary on March 16th to rave re-views. A sing-a-long, with Cary playing guitar and one of our newest mem-bers, Denise DeWitt, play-ing piano, was a hit with the audience.

The management team has some wonderful new blood comple-menting and reinforcing the talents of the returning members. The bal-ance of this year will be busy as we prepare for a show in the late fall, continue to bring new members into the chorus, and get our repertoire polished up with old favorites and new songs, sung with unity, matched vowels, and the sound that rings every chord. As always, we come for the music, but stay for the friendship.

The Mission Viejo Chorus is Rarin’ to Go! We can’t wait to see you all at our Region-al Competition. Our thanks to those who have helped improve our delivery. We’ve had remarkable guidance in coaching ses-sions with Laura Pallas and Chris Robertson. Heather Meglasson has assisted us with choreography. From Tucson Desert Harmony’s Mother’s and Father’s Day Harmony Grams to the Youth In Harmony Festival (how is it that those energetic teens give us even more energy?!) to Double Quartet Contest at Camp Blue Agave (and helping bring home the cov-eted Golden Banana!) to performing all over Tucson and on various stops on I-10 between Arizona and California traveling to Region 21-derful events. It is amazing that we’ve had time to squeeze in such in-credible coaching opportunities with Jean Barford, Kathy Barnett, Nancy Bergman, Dayle Ann Cook, Emo, Ashley Estrada, Jana Gutenson, and Melanie Wroe. “Thank you” doesn’t seem to express enough of our grat-itude to the amazing talent that has been shared with us! UnLimited Quartet has some BIG news to share: our world-famous lead, Kim Vaughn, has announced her retirement from quartet sing-ing! Imagine the surprise that was for the rest of the quartet! Kim has found married life so highly agreeable that she wants to spend even more time with husband, Dale. Ah, l’amour! Despite our efforts to change her mind, she remains resolute and will be officially retired after Regional Convention. After starting into a tail-spin, we looked in our own backyard and found the incredibly talented Reema Hayashi-da, an assistant lead section leader in the San Diego Chorus. We are thrilled to continue our journey to Denver with Reema on board. Kim will continue to be a vital part of the quartet as our coach and mentor, as well as the director of the San Diego Chorus. As always, we are proud to represent Region 21 in contests and in our public performances.

Charmed has been busy, Busy, BUSY! After Houston, we had several Christmas perfor-mances, including singing on the Pasadena Crown City Men’s show. It was fun learning and re-learning all those Christmas songs, but in a flash the holidays were over and it was time to focus on contest. We had the great honor of being the mic testers for Region 11. What a terrific opportunity for us to try out our contest set! We stayed to sing around on Saturday night and had a blast! Thanks so much Region 11! We had a few moments to work with Judy Pozsgay and have been lucky to continue working with Jeff Baker, Dale Sy-verson, Lisa Kneebone, Dr. Chris Peterson, and Dr./Mr./Husband Tom Krenek. We’re really looking forward to regional and can’t wait to see you all there! Love y’all!

Enclosed is...$200 as a donation on be-half of our “Honorary Member,” Dorothy Peterson of Escondido, California. Dorothy passed away on March 9, 2012 at age 84.

Dorothy sang with the Pacific Belles for s e v e r a l years and when she b e c a m e unable to sing, she continued being a part of every chorus show that we performed by playing the piano for arriving guests. When we had “teas” with decorated tables, Dorothy was the first to sign up!

The Pacific Belles have sung and con-tinue to sing many songs that Dorothy ar-ranged for us. She arranged many songs for quartets as well.

Dorothy was a wonderful and loving mother, grandmother and friend. We will miss this lovely lady dearly. She would have been so happy to have us contribute to the Young Women in Harmony program. Dor-othy was a true Sweet Adeline.

Ms. Cellaneous Golden Sands, Harborlites, Scottsdale, Vista Hills

Spring has sprung and that means Sweet Adelines everywhere are preparing for regional convention! Touché is no different, though we are only preparing for ONE regional this year, Region 9 in April. As much as we wanted to be in all three of our regions again this spring, air-fares and job demands worked against us. We send our very best wishes to each and every Golden West Region 21 competitor, quartet and chorus alike, for a magically transcend-ing performance. Jan, Gina, and Kim will be tuned in to the regional webcast, cheering you on from their two corners of the country! We hope you feel their beaucoup amour!

Touché spent our winter months choosing and learning a few new

pieces of music, plan-ning the logistics of our long-distance en-deavor for the next year, receiving some stellar coaching from the marvelous Carole Kirkpat-rick, and celebrating Gina’s daughter’s sweet sixteen birthday (with CAKE!). Job demands kept us apart in March, but April through November rehearsals are locked in! We are looking forward to a fun-filled year, learning and growing together. We are currently book-ing shows AND music schools (we are teach-ing our first this August!) for 2013, so please contact us if we can be of service. ‘Til we meet again, we wish you bon temps! Adieu!

sing with Club 21 at the Quartet Jamboree and to see our friends in various cho-ruses and quartets. A few of us have been tak-ing road trips to meet with coaches. We trav-eled to Men’s Midwinter in Tucson, Arizona. What a great time. We coached with the awe-some Jana Gutenson. Thanks Jana for always whipping us into shape. We made another roadtrip to Tucson to coach with the amazing Jeff Baker. Thanks for the insight and the last bit of encouragement we needed...”surgical precision”...You’ve got it Jeff. We will be singing at our friends’ wedding reception a week be-fore contest. Can’t wait to share the stage with our friends and sing our hearts out.

See you all in Pasadena...Nothin But Blue Skies Baby!!

Ms. Cellaneous kicked off the new year by spending January 6th and 7th with the Vista Hills Chorus. The quartet spent Friday night and all day Saturday instructing the chorus on the basic skills of barbershop singing, how to be a better listener, section leader skills, and how to put the whole package on stage. We ended the session by assisting the chorus in putting on a show for their friends and fam-ily. What great fun! Next, we attended the Club 21 Singers School. What an honor to be part of a SKYPE coaching session with Tony DeRosa. Thanks Club 21 for giving us this op-portunity to work with Tony and to discover the benefits of techno coaching. Since January, we have performed on some local barbershop shows. We love sharing our music and our Cellaneous humor with the barbershop world. We have also coached several times with Jana Gutenson. WOW! Jana is a fabulous coach and what fun it is to work with a JUDGE before the score sheets are official. We look forward to seeing all of our friends in Pasadena and can’t wait to share some of our new Cellaneous songs. After contest we plan to attend Region 11’s Summer Sizzler in Bakersfield, to help welcome Chris Cellaneous as the new Co-Di-rector of the Golden Sands Chorus. We also plan to attend “Camp Ringing Pines,” and, in true Cellaneous fashion, might even put to-gether a double quartet: PBJ.

Hugs! The Cellaneous Sistahs...—Mary, Chris, Susan, Sarah

Charmed, and special Barbershop Harmony Society guest quartet Tenacious Q. The Harbor-lites Chorus closed the show, inviting the girls to the stage for the closing number, “We Are Family.”

In October, three quartets represented Region 21 in the Rising Star Quartet Competition in Houston. They were: How We Met from Rio Rancho, NM (4th place) (Kari Blaylock, Camille Kelly, Genevieve Vaive, Dani Lenski); Not So Famous Four from Chandler, AZ (5th place) (Cait-lin Tervo, Melanie Barker, Jessica Barkley, Olivia Hammond); and Dreamcatchers from Chan-dler, AZ (7th place) (Nicole Knox, Krista Moller, Kaleena Middleton, Raven DeSacia).

In January 2012, during the Bar-bershop Harmony Society’s Inter-national Mid-Winter Convention in Tucson AZ, the YWIH Chorus from Chandler High School, the Treblemakers (under the direc-tion of Lori Lyford), performed as a special guest, wowing the huge international audience. Also, during this convention week, five high school classroom workshops were conducted, assisted by the 2011 Men’s International Col-legiate Quartet Champion Prestige. Yee Haw! Our very own Patty Cobb Baker placed 2nd at the International Quartet Contest in Hous-ton in her quartet Touché! We couldn’t be prouder of our fellow Club 21 Sister! Also, congratulations to UnLimited for placing in the top 15 at Interna-tional! This qualifies them to return to International in Denver without having to compete this spring. Club 21 also wants to congratulate our YWIH quartets that participated in the Rising Star contest in Houston: How We Met (4th Place), Not So Famous Four (5th Place), and Dreamcatchers (7th Place). Our future is certainly looking bright and shiny here in Region 21.

With that thought in mind, who will represent Re-gion 21 at International, this year in Denver? Maybe by the time you read this article, the decision will be made! Let’s send them all! Club 21 also thanks the members of Region 21 for attending the “Quartet Jamboree” on Thursday night during our spring con-test weekend. This is a great way to support Region 21 quartets that will be competing on Friday night and the proceeds from the event help assist the quar-tets that qualify to represent us in Denver. And re-member we want to send them ALL! Finally, don’t forget to be on the look out for information on our annual “Singers School.” Confirmation of dates and location should be finalized contest weekend. Infor-mation should be available at the summer seminar, “Camp Ringing Pines.”

—Chris Robertson, Club 21 President

The first week in February 2012, the Region 21 YWIH Program had an exhibit at the Arizona Music Educator’s In-Service Conference. Lori Lyford and the Music Specialist of

Barbershop Harmony So-ciety Mike O’Neill offered the music educators a ses-sion entitled “The Skills Barbershop Singing Will Bring To Your Choral De-partment.” The session uti-lized the Chandler High School Men’s Barbershop Ensemble and the Treble-makers to demonstrate.

The informative session was visually recorded and DVDs of the presentation were distrib-uted to educators who were unable to attend.

Dreamcatchers quartet also was involved during the conference. They performed the National An-them at the opening of the concert by the Vocal and Band Ensembles and they entertained at the regis-tration area and throughout the exhibit hall.

These young singers are our fu-ture. And the future of our organiza-tion looks bright!

IT’S NOT TOO LATE to sign up and attend this year’s Annual Retreat of the Arrangers Development Program. It’s being held May 18-20, 2012 in Tucson at the Viscount Suites. “Wannabe” arrangers at all levels are welcome to attend! We’re especially excited this year to have one of our internet mentees from Japan attending!

The retreat is a wonderful opportunity to catch a glimpse of what barbershop arranging is all about and to learn the strengths and weaknesses in arrangements. Classes will include: “What-cha-ma-call-its”—Musical Terminology for Dummies taught by Suzy Lobaugh, CMA, which will discuss barbershop and general musi-cal terminology that we use; Sweat the Small Stuff taught by Joan D’Agostino, IMAP, designed to develop an arranger’s working list of items needing to be checked before an arrangement is “finished” and ready to be released (which is more extensive that you might think); What You Always Wanted to Know About Chord Progressions, taught by Joanie Adler, CMA, which will touch on the diatonic scale, circle of fifths, seventh chords, root to root listening, and much more; Dif-ferences Between Men, Women and Young Women taught by Nancy Bergman, MMA, which will be limited to discussion of arranging differences only — no exceptions!; and Got the Beat? taught by Anita Barzilla, CMA, which will make sense of different rhythms. If you’d like registration information, please contact Anna Maria Parker at [email protected].
