The Peninsula Metropolitan Park District
(PenMet Parks) has announced plans to
develop a new state-of-the-art community
recreation center in Gig Harbor. The
District has entered into a purchase & sale
agreement for the current Performance
Golf on 14th Ave in Gig Harbor.
The Community Recreation Center will
address many local needs including active
space for seniors, programs for special
populations, and indoor recreation
opportunities during the dark and rainy
winter months. Prominent features of the
new facility include over 190,000 square
feet of indoor recreation space,
12 multi-purpose classrooms for
community activities, and both the
longest indoor walking track and largest
event rental space on the Peninsula.
Current timelines list a late-Fall 2019
opening of the existing building, and a
Spring 2020 opening of the air-
supported recreation structure. PenMet
Parks will share project scoop, concept
drawings, and will answer questions!

April Fools' Day is celebrated
on April 1st each year as a
day to play tricks and
practical jokes on others.
This type of custom has
existed since Roman times
when practical jokes were
played on others during a
festival called Hilaria.
April Fools' Day has been
celebrated for many
centuries but its origins are
not known for certain. Some
believe it began in France
when Pope Gregory
replaced the Julian calendar
with the Gregorian calendar
in the Julian calendar month
of April. The day of
introduction of the
Gregorian calendar was
made the first day of
January.
Some people hadn’t heard
about the change in the
date, so they continued to
celebrate the New Year’s
Day, but it being 1st April,
so, others called them
“April fools.”
Today April Fools' Day is
popular in the United
States, Canada, Brazil,
Europe, and Australia.

Upbeat, friendly, and fun
to be around are just a
few characteristics of this
month’s employee of the
month, Andrew. He is
hard working and is
always willing to go above
and beyond to help out.
He has volunteered his
time to help the activity
department as an actor in
a murder mystery dinner.
He has also been willing
April Fools’ Day
to stay for additional shifts
to make sure that there
are enough servers. This
was most recently shown
during the snow storm.
Andrew made sure he
made it for his shifts as
well as called even when
he wasn't scheduled to
make sure there were
enough servers. Thank
you, Andrew, for your
dedication and hard work!
