Harassment Revisited Response to ldquoRadio Record Reps amp Harassmentrdquo in last weekrsquos (96) Country Aircheck Weekly was not surprisingly voluminous In addition to countless troubling ldquome toordquo stories respondents made clear their view that the issues are worse and more pervasive than first reported ldquoItrsquos not just radio itrsquos artists toordquo wrote several female regionals Added a male PD ldquoI once had a female rep hit on me and I had to call her bossrdquo A female programmer says ldquoIrsquove been [propositioned inappropriately] by male regionals and nationalsrdquo Beyond the responses Country Aircheck also reached out to female executives in records radio and artist management for more answers and hopefully a path toward solutions Face The Problem At some point in their careers most women in the industry have experienced harassment but one former label exec says it lessened as she climbed the ranks ldquoThe chair yoursquore in makes a differencerdquo she says ldquoPeople look at VP or National differently than a regional or coordinator Maybe therersquos a little more liberty that can be taken with a regional or coordinatorrdquo Having had those experiences early on can often make a female exec better prepared to help regionals who are going through it now ldquoItrsquos probably a lot less intimidating to come to a female supervisor and share that experience than it is with a malerdquo says a current label exec who points out that help isnrsquot a one-size-fits-all solution (continued on page 10)

Contemporary Christian station in town who loved the Beach Boys and called himself Smiling Brian Wilson on the air he says On a whim Clark stopped by the station and introduced himself They took me back to the studio to meet this guy He never talked about it on air but he was blind He had everything in braille and sounded so cool despite this very serious limitation I dont know why but he took a liking to me told me I had a good voice for radio and I started hanging out I realized radio was what I wanted to do Not medicine Part-time production work led to Sunday morning board ops and the familiar rise through radio ndash St Louis Winston-Salem Jacksonville Cleveland and then Pittsburgh His time as DirCreative Services for Urban KMJMSt Louis was where he discovered his talent wasnt an on-air fit Thats where I realized my passion was building and designing brands he says As OM and eventually VPProgramming for a succession of owners in Pittsburgh culminating in CBS Radio Clark got his first Country experience with WDSY After leaving CBS Radio in 2011 Clark joined Vallie Richards Donovan as a consultant eventually moving home when his son decided to attend USC Having worked with Hometown Columbias Kirk Litton on a number of projects Clark was thrilled when the majority shareholder decided to move on The opportunity was for Kirk to buy and own it outright and he asked if I would be involved Clark says Isnt it every radio persons dream to own a station in their hometown We closed August 2 Thats the good news The challenge is as Clark says Being a standalone against Cumulus iHeartMedia and Alpha Theres the emotional side of being thrilled to own a radio station in your

hometown Then theres the business reality of doing that WCOS has been around since I was a kid Its the heritage station with the resources of iHeart Clarks counter is Radio 101 Our position is that were locally owned and operated he says Decisions we make are not partially or entirely determined by someone on a regional or national level We can build a station that will do whatever is needed to engage the local communities of Columbia and the Midlands Live and local is more than lip service he asserts Everyone talks about it but for so many reasons a lot of stations could be picked up out of their market and plopped down somewhere else and no one would know the difference Instead The Dude is angling for an intense integration into the community The first step is no step at all ndash simply embracing the existing moniker The Dude was not my idea he says In fact it was created by a friend of mine Dave Cobb The concept was to create a human connection with the audience like Jack did for Adult Hits and Hank does for Classic Country Not only does the station have the Dude tude ndash an attitude and personality ndash we play dudes male or female who are the most iconic artists Everything we do supports that The station is currently running music and imaging to reintroduce the brand Live personalities are being sought (Gig Alert here) and Clark aims to be fully staffed by the end of the year As for programming The goal is to hand off day-to-day operations to a PD at some point but right now its more efficient for me to handle it His other area of emphasis will be promotions whether its with the university or the areas many military installations The company owns ColaDaily a local digital news service that

(continued from page 1)Harassment RevisitedldquoThe conversation begins with whether the rep wants to handle it herself and is she coming to me just for advice or if shersquos already tried and feels itrsquos time for someone else to step in If itrsquos the latter I would absolutely directly call the programmer in question and have that conversation myself and hope itrsquos a done issue at that pointrdquo Responding to a male radio exec quoted last week a female radio exec says shersquod be more direct if she found out an employee was harassing a regional ldquoI would deal with it in the very same manner as if I was dealing with an internal issuerdquo she says ldquoI would say lsquoIrsquove heard this Tell me about this particular situation I want to hear your sidersquo I would make it clear in no uncertain terms that the behavior is not okayrdquo She says shersquod step in regardless of whether her employee was the harasser or the victim ldquoAs managers itrsquos our job to protect our employees and to make sure theyrsquore behaving in a professional way So whether my employees are being harassed by someone from the outside or whether theyrsquore not representing themselves and our company well Irsquove got an issuerdquo If the victim was her employee she says shersquod have no problem calling the record reprsquos supervisor ldquoSometimes the person it happens to feels very powerless I would feel like itrsquos my responsibility How dare you make that person feel that way That behavior is not okay Irsquom going to call and wersquore going to reset the expectations for a visit hererdquo Speak Now Many people on the receiving end of harassment are either afraid to say anything think it wonrsquot do any good or discover things donrsquot change even when they do ldquoThatrsquos a big part of why I leftrdquo says a former regional who is no longer in the industry ldquoI talked to my boss and he wasnrsquot being supportive I got to the point where I wouldnrsquot travel with a certain artist I thought about pressing charges against the guy ndash looking back I regret not doing it I was scared of the character assassination Nashville is brutal when yoursquore not in good gracesrdquo When an artist made repeated inappropriate comments to another regional during a meeting at the label no one came to her defense ldquoNo they just laughed and when it was over they were like lsquoBoy he really likes yoursquordquo she says Those experiences notwithstanding a former label exec says she always felt supported by her employers but never pushed it

far ldquoI was completely supported to the very top to the chairman of the companyrdquo she says ldquoI have been through HR but I was just venting I didnrsquot want it to go any further because I didnrsquot want to be that person Irsquove seen where women have spoken out and have never worked again Or it took them a long time to come backrdquo The radio executive says not only is she supported in addressing issues like these itrsquos expected ldquoFrom my boss all the way up no one would stand for thatrdquo she says ldquoIf I didnrsquot take action they would not be ok with thatrdquo TCB Short of calling anyonersquos boss the executives agree on steps that can be taken to prevent or stop unwanted behavior ldquoItrsquos probably not a popular opinion but as women we have a responsibility to set a precedentrdquo says a current female label exec ldquoThe way you dress how you act just generally how you conduct yourself in a business situation yoursquore setting a precedentrdquo In the face of unwelcome behavior a clear message must be sent ldquoThere are times where yoursquove set the boundary and the person is too ignorant or disrespectful to even care and they push itrdquo she says ldquoBut at that point itrsquos on me to say lsquoWhoa ndash misunderstandingrsquo You just need to say lsquoHey Irsquom sorry if I gave off this impression but this is not how I work This is strictly a business relationship a friendship But this is not acceptable and I do not tolerate itrsquo But it has to be saidrdquo ldquoWhether yoursquore a woman or a man you have to stand up for yourself and speak up in that momentrdquo agrees an artist manager ldquoYou need to empower yourself at the same time Donrsquot cry that yoursquove been harassed if yoursquore not handling it in that moment If you are and it continues then you do something more about itrdquo ldquoIrsquove got a few years in the business and in general I believe that women have more power to speak up than they believe they dordquo says the radio exec ldquoIrsquove talked to some of the reps who have told me some horrific stories of what theyrsquove dealt with and when we talked through what they did about it Irsquove always walked away feeling sad that they didnrsquot speak up for themselves morerdquo Record Keeping Los-Angeles based discrimination attorney Gloria Allred says speaking up and including evidence is imperative ldquoItrsquos important that the victim document whatrsquos happening to her ndash what was said how it was said when it was saidrdquo she says ldquoAny emails texts voicemails And that she let the harasser know that itrsquos not welcome She should look at her employee handbook to find out what she can do if shersquos the victim of harassment to whom she should report And she should reportrdquo Documentation is an area where one label exec is well-prepared ldquoI save everythingrdquo she says ldquoPictures of [male genitals] videos of them [masturbating] emails asking for a lsquoone-on-onersquo meeting where hersquoll pay for the room and fly me on a jetrdquo She says she hasnrsquot ever gotten to the point of sending those items to anyonersquos bosses but she felt it necessary to keep them to protect herself And in the future ldquoIf I could write a book anonymously I would And Irsquod name namesrdquo She pauses ldquoAnd you would be shocked at the namesrdquo One thing many female industry vets agree on is the need to mentor younger women ndash and men ndash so they can help prevent and deal with harassment ldquoWhen I came to town I had a group of women mentor merdquo says the former label exec ldquoThey sat me down before I even started and said lsquoHere are the rules as a woman in this business here are the things you donrsquot do You donrsquot cross the line with radio with artists with fansrsquo Irsquove used that throughout my career with any young person coming in man or woman I tell them the same rulesrdquo ldquoItrsquos our responsibility as female promo vets to set an example and to guide them to be mentors in that regardrdquo says another ldquoTherersquos a responsibility for us as veterans to be a place of secrecy of confidence We all get busy a lot of us have families we go home to at the end of day but if itrsquos lunch once a week or coffee once a week or even if itrsquos just a 20-minute phone call we need to be there for each other morerdquo ndashJess Wright

Keith Clark

Contemporary Christian station in town who loved the Beach Boys and called himself Smiling Brian Wilson on the air he says On a whim Clark stopped by the station and introduced himself They took me back to the studio to meet this guy He never talked about it on air but he was blind He had everything in braille and sounded so cool despite this very serious limitation I dont know why but he took a liking to me told me I had a good voice for radio and I started hanging out I realized radio was what I wanted to do Not medicine Part-time production work led to Sunday morning board ops and the familiar rise through radio ndash St Louis Winston-Salem Jacksonville Cleveland and then Pittsburgh His time as DirCreative Services for Urban KMJMSt Louis was where he discovered his talent wasnt an on-air fit Thats where I realized my passion was building and designing brands he says As OM and eventually VPProgramming for a succession of owners in Pittsburgh culminating in CBS Radio Clark got his first Country experience with WDSY After leaving CBS Radio in 2011 Clark joined Vallie Richards Donovan as a consultant eventually moving home when his son decided to attend USC Having worked with Hometown Columbias Kirk Litton on a number of projects Clark was thrilled when the majority shareholder decided to move on The opportunity was for Kirk to buy and own it outright and he asked if I would be involved Clark says Isnt it every radio persons dream to own a station in their hometown We closed August 2 Thats the good news The challenge is as Clark says Being a standalone against Cumulus iHeartMedia and Alpha Theres the emotional side of being thrilled to own a radio station in your

hometown Then theres the business reality of doing that WCOS has been around since I was a kid Its the heritage station with the resources of iHeart Clarks counter is Radio 101 Our position is that were locally owned and operated he says Decisions we make are not partially or entirely determined by someone on a regional or national level We can build a station that will do whatever is needed to engage the local communities of Columbia and the Midlands Live and local is more than lip service he asserts Everyone talks about it but for so many reasons a lot of stations could be picked up out of their market and plopped down somewhere else and no one would know the difference Instead The Dude is angling for an intense integration into the community The first step is no step at all ndash simply embracing the existing moniker The Dude was not my idea he says In fact it was created by a friend of mine Dave Cobb The concept was to create a human connection with the audience like Jack did for Adult Hits and Hank does for Classic Country Not only does the station have the Dude tude ndash an attitude and personality ndash we play dudes male or female who are the most iconic artists Everything we do supports that The station is currently running music and imaging to reintroduce the brand Live personalities are being sought (Gig Alert here) and Clark aims to be fully staffed by the end of the year As for programming The goal is to hand off day-to-day operations to a PD at some point but right now its more efficient for me to handle it His other area of emphasis will be promotions whether its with the university or the areas many military installations The company owns ColaDaily a local digital news service that
