A generation who see problemsas opportunities inneed of solutions

A talent pool of young adults unable totranslate theirskills and assetsinto commercialventures

    1. What is Harambe Cameroon?Harambe Cameroon is a platform for Cameroon s youth to solve local problems with business solutions.Through its Business Plan Competition process, Harambe Cameroon engages young social entrepreneurs(i) to propose business projects, that would have a positive local impact and create jobs;(ii) to obtain startup seed capital to implement their project.

    Background

There is a large number of skilled, creative and innovative minds in thecountry - a talent pool of young adults, studying in colleges and universitiesand making their first steps in the formal and informal sectors of Africaneconomies. Our goal is to seek and implement innovative, sustainable, andentrepreneurial solutions through comprehensive, mutually beneficialpartnerships utilizing a bottom-up approach .

Unfortunately, as evinced by the staggering number of unemployed young

professionals across the nation, the vast majority of these potentialentrepreneurs are unable to translate their skills and assets into commercialventures for the benefit of their communities.

Who ? Harambe-Cameroon, an independent branch of Harambe Entrepreneur Alliance (HEA) analliance of African students studying at leading universities in the United States, Canada and Europe.

Its mission is to capture, inform and engage Africas global intellectual capital towards a sustained, strategic and concerted development of the African continent. Established in September 2007 as anon-profit enterprise, HEA has quickly grown in its outreach with 21 African Countries currentlybeing represented. Arguably the most powerful network of the next generation of African

    professionals, anywhere in the world.

What? HCam has spearheaded the first Social Entrepreneurship Program in the nation, whichseeks to change the paradigm as it relates to competition and job creation amongst Cameroonians . I t isdesigned to tap into the idealism, creativity and dynamism of Cameroons youth.

Why? To inspire and engage a new generation of young leaders andentrepreneurs who see problems as opportunities in need of solutions and havethe poise and wherewithal to engage others to make long-lasting social impact.

How? Students from Problem-Solvers Clubs in Cameroonian Universities apply in teams of 5 tocompete in the national Problem- Solvers Competition. (Must have a min. of 2 women)

The top-20 teams are pre-selected to compete in the national Competition. The top-5 teams are invited for 24hours (Business Camp) Incubator. They are empowered with

the tools to translate their business ideas into ventures as they are exposed to industry expertsand mentors and engage in workshops and roundtable discussions.

Each team proposes a social innovation project : A business enterprise that would solve a socialproblem.

The Top-2 project proposals receive both rewards and seed funding for the implementation of their social innovation projects.

    3. What do we seek to accomplish? (i)

Cameroons first Social Entrepreneurship Program (HICSEP) seeks to:

    1. Change the paradigm as it relates to entrepreneurship and competition among Cameroons yout h.2. Empower the individual by providing necessary training and skills development that will allow

them to translate their ideas into ventures for the benefit of the community.3. Provide a support network comprising of students, mentors/experts, NGOs, businesses and

    government agencies.

Harambe Cameroon seeks to initiate partnerships that motivate Cameroonians to unleash their potentialby pursuing socio-economic development initiatives.

Instead of following an altruistic approach towards development, we seek to initiatemutually beneficial partnerships in which each actor in the economy has a

vested interest in each others success.

    4. What do we seek to accomplish in 2011?

It is critical to establish effective systems that support the development of entrepreneurial skills amongthis demographic. Understanding that Cameroons greatest resource is its people, and that 60% of itspopulation is under 24 years of age, empowering the youth will go a long way to establish theeconomic security of the country.

Harambe-Cameroon proposes an innovative approach to solving the problem of Cameroons socio -economic advancement. Harambe-Cameroon will ensure that the next generation of Cameroonianprofessionals are well equipped to think innovatively, act locally, connect globally.

5 Sample Projects Submitted for the July 28 th 2011Harambe-Cameroon Problem- Solvers Competition

    1. #Recy cling, #Plastic #Construction #TilesUniversity of Yaounde I Ecole Nationale Superieure Polytechnique (ENSP)

Waste plastics (especially bags and packaging) can be used as raw materials for themanufacture of tiles using a recent technique, simple, inexpensive and very easy toimplement, which has already been experimented with success in Niamey (Niger),Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) and Cameroon only inGaroua.

After collecting and recycling plastic bags andpackages, we melt them and mix the dough with sand (and possibly otheradditives such as cement clinker, & pozzolan) to obtain a kind of mortarwhich is cooled with water or air into molds to obtain tiles with mechanical

properties (which are different from cement tiles) depending on the ratio of sand & plastic paste.

    2. #Services # Household #Women Entrepreneurship Catholic University of Central Africa (UCAC)

When we looked around us, we found out that in our society, there isa lack of qualified household-helps (house maids). Because of changing socialhabits, due to the fact that women are less available to care for their homes, the needfor house-helps (maids) has increased. We intend to open an agency providing house-

help services to households and other structures that may needmaids.

This initiative will generate income to the extent at which we will charge amonthly sum of money to our clients, for each housemaids we refer to them, andthe agency will obtain a profit for the service we provide.

    3. #Public Health #Health #Urbanization University of Yaound I

The lack of public toilets pushes city-users to ease themselves anywhere, witha total lack of decency. At every major crossroads(Obili, Essos, Carrefour Caca, Axe Rond point Express-acacia) one willfind lakes of urine and defecations, that all tarnish the image of our city.

As a solution, we envision the establishment of a structure to createand distill mobile public toilets in all the hot spots of thecity for a start, and with the support of the state, municipalitiesand individuals, expand services to other cities.

    4. #Youth Employment #Agriculture #Private Public Partnership University of Douala ESSEC

Operation 500 jobs for youth in 2013 with organic farming of the corngrits imported by the brewing companies of Cameroon. The localproblem we have identifies is that most Cameroonian brewery

companies import their raw materials including "corn grits, becauselocal supply is insufficient. To turn this challenge into businessopportunity, we will grow over 5acres of fertile land still undeveloped(in the foothills of the Western Region in the Bamboutos & Mbouda).During our discussions with Brasseries du Cameroun (the nationalbrewery company), they are willing to give us adequate seeds (to produce corn gritz) and assistus through the technical implementation of the project.

    5. #Health #Biomedical Engineering # Prenatal health #Infant mortalityUniversit des Montagnes (UdM) - Bagangt

It is still proven in Cameroon that the infant mortality rate remains high. Thechallenge for gynecologists and midwives to detect the pulse of the fetus in thewomb of its mother is one of the indirect causes to the high rate of infantmortality. This difficulty is related to the use of the stethoscope, which includeserrors, such as noise interference, which in some cases distorts the diagnosis. Weplan to design a device using the technology of the stethoscope, that can beconnected to a computer and using computer software, will extract information(cardiac activity) of the fetus and the display on the screen in real time. Thisnovelty in our country will improve the quality of maternity care. The device will

more accurately inform medical specialists on the healthof the fetus, and will guide the diagnosis in order to takethe correct decision in the best possible way

The proposed software will be designed taking into account all physiologicalaspects. We will implement this system based on our background-courses in physiology, signal processing and medical informatics. Conscious of the frequency of fetalheartbeat, we will program a digital filter which will cancel the noises related tothe heartbeat of a pregnant woman to preserve only those of the fetus...
