FEBRUARY 2017 Happy Wheels VOLUME 33 Number 1 Www.washingtonstategoodsam.com Facebook: Washington State Good Sams - Yahoo Groups: Washington State Good Sams Hello everyone, I hope you and your family had a joyous holiday season. It was certainly an eventful one at our home. Holiday parties and dinners with family and friends always warms our heart. We had a family wedding and will become great grandparents this summer. We couldn’t ask for a better holiday. We are so happy to see the thermometer go up a little each day right now. Our front yard, on the north side of the house, has been frozen for weeks now. And the fishpond is ice except around the fountain. Poor fish, not moving. They too are waiting for spring. And those of you on the east side of the mountains have had a snowy winter; at least that is what we have heard. I know, I know, I shouldn’t be complaining when living on this side of the ridge. I have been busy preparing the programs for our State Meetings. Lynden is almost done and when it is ready a copy will be emailed to each chapter president. We are trying new things this year, things that have been suggested by some of you. I hope to have at least one different event at each meeting. You can look for entertainment, seminars, speakers, demonstrations or just maybe a class that might be different. We can always learn something new; it’s what keeps us young. So please put the State Meetings on your camping schedule for 2017. You will find the registration forms on our website, Facebook or in this edition of Happy Wheels. We really do have a good time at these meetings, as well as meeting a lot of very nice and fun people. My last request, I am in need of an Assistant Director for the Olympic/Kitsap Peninsula area and also for a photographer. If you are interested please let me know. Exciting news for Dogs for the Deaf! They are expanding their facility to also have Autism Assistance Dogs. Ground braking for the facility was in November of 2016. The new facility will house 24 kennels. The kennels will be larger

kennels due to the fact that autism dogs need to weigh a minimum of 55 pounds. So far they have placed two dogs in Oregon. They will reach out more once they get the program up and running. The first dog, Ian, went to Parker on February 28, 2016. The second dog Yoko went to Grason on June 29, 2016. Their goal is to have the new facility up and running by January of 2018. More news to follow. Also, they placed more hearing dogs in 2016 than in previous years. Your donations have made a big difference in so many lives. Keep up the good work. Happy Tails

PARKING AT STATE EVENTS..... We are asking all of you Good Samers attending the three state events to help out the parking crew and the Wagonmaster in particular. First, if you want to be sure to park together, you must arrive together. The parking crew does not always know where the rest of your chapter is parked. It is also a lot easier and quicker to park rigs at the end of a row than to park a rig between two other rigs. Also, if your Chapter has a Sign to post in front of your Rig Group at the various State Events, this would greatly help the Parking Committee!!! Second, we need a lot more helpers so that each person can work a shorter shift. Many of you could spend three or four hours helping with parking and also get the benefit of meeting some new friends. The more involved you get, the more fun you will have! Regular parking hours are 8-5. If you have a valid reason to park at a later time, please make arrangements with the Wagonmaster at 360-224-6183.

We finished up the year of 2016 ! Now we start off the New Year with a Meeting and game day on the 13th of January. Nothing has been planned for the year as yet. We have a few months that people have signed up to be hosts. Were waiting for the snow to melt and then get on with our adventures. Looking forward to a sunshine summer!

Happy New Year from Whatcom Good Sams. In 2016, we had well attended meetings and outings with many guests and a few new members. Our hope is that we continue that trend in 2017. The new year brings some changes in our group. I have taken the previous vacant position of Publicity person; Toby and Theresa Gelder have taken over the duties of Historian from Marci Lunna. Marci has done a fabulous job of recording, in photography, our camp-outs and meetings. The rest of our officers have graciously agreed to serve for another year. Our Wagon masters, Ron and Doreen Adams, have worked hard to find and arrange our 2017 camp-outs. As in years past, we go to the favorites plus one to two new places. This year we will be doing some three day and longer stays since just two nights were not enough for some of us. Money collected from birthdays, anniversaries and auctions in 2016 went to three local food banks to help those of our community in most need. Here's to fair weather, happy trails and new friends in 2017.

By now most of us have winterized and covered our RV vehicles for the winter months and are waiting for Spring so we can get started Rving again. During the winter, from November through March, we have a monthly club dinner meeting with food served by the Masonic Lodge ladies . Our meet ings are informat ive and enjoyable , allowing members to visit with each other during the Winter months. Our Christmas holiday celebration was at the home of members Ed and Diana Parker. This is a fun time as everyone was experiencing the holiday cheer, and the company of other members. As you might agree, great food, great friends, etc., Adds to the holiday cheer. We have already determined when our 2017 camp outs will be and the locations. That means we will be looking forward to Spring all Winter, and the excitement of getting on the road again. Good Sam Rving is like good food....it takes time and patience to get ready. All Cariboo Trail members wish Good Sammers everywhere to be safe and stay warm this winter. If traveling, be safe, and be sane, so that come Spring we will all be able to hit the road in good spirits and with enthusiasm!

Our last campout was at American Sunset Resort in Westport, Oregon in mid- October. We arrived on Monday but left before noon on Wednesday because of a huge storm coming. We plan to try it again in the future. In November we elected and installed new officers for 2017. Jack Courtney - President, Bob Bearden - Vice President, Jana Lunday - Secretary, Cheryl Spencer - Treasurer, Wayne Hoppen - Wagon Master, and Tom Laird - Assistant Wagon Master. On December 6th we had our Christmas party. We feasted on Pork Loin with Apricot Glaze, assorted vegetables, salads, rolls, and dessert. The Elks was decorated with an “Old Fashioned Christmas” theme. Several of the chapter’s ladies had gathered at Diane LaRue’s home (one of our talented crafts ladies) to make table favors. There were Santas, Elves and Snowmen filled with Christmas candy mints at each place setting. The green cloth napkins with folded to resemble Christmas trees. Everyone contributed toys for the Salvation Army’s Christmas Store and canned goods for the HELP warehouse. Additionally, Sandy Hoppen decorated a large artificial fir wreath with lovely red and white decorations and ribbons. This was raffled to earn money for the Christmas Store with $100.00 raised. The wreath was won by one of our new members, Gayla Marple. After dinner, we played a “silly” game led by Michele Barrowcliff when we had to follow directions to create a Christmas scene on a paper plate placed on top of our heads. Joan Nelson won the prize for the most recognizable items in her drawing. Afterwards, we played several rounds of Bunco with Jack Courtney winning the booby prize for “Most Losses”, Glen Hogg earned the “Most Wins” prize, and Joan Nelson won the “Most Bunco’s” prize. Happy New Year!

At our October meeting, Janet Pantoja announced that they would be camping at Fidalgo Bay RV Park, & if anyone wanted to join them, they should call the Park and make their reservation. Several members & three new couples decided to join them. Janet stated this was a NO HOST campout, but she would furnish "Zombie Pie" and others were to furnish other spooky food. The pie consisted of Meatballs for eyes, hot dogs for fingers, and spaghetti was the brains. Several members decided to join them, so Janet made this into a full blown Halloween Party, with decorations & Halloween Bingo. Everyone had so much fun, the 3 new couples decided that after such a great campout, they wanted join our Chapter. The new Couples were Mark & Lee Adams, Denise Hawk/Joseph Schwahn & Larry & Sue Newton. November/December meetings were combined at the Sammamish Valley Grange Hall in Woodinville. A wonderful pot luck buffet was enjoyed by all, then on to business. During the Nov. meeting, the new members were all welcomed, the Secretary and Treas. Reports were g iven and accepted. Larry highlighted the 2017 campouts, he also reported on the proposed trip to Yellowstone Park. Several were very interested in going. During New Business a motion was made to re-elect our present Chapter Officers, motion passed. December was basically a Christmas Party with a White Elephant gift exchange. Some gifts were exchanged but all went well. The new couples expressed how much they enjoyed being with our Chapter, & we feel they will be a good fit. Our January-March meetings will be held at the Original Pancake House new Bothell.. We are looking forward to all the interesting meetings and campouts in 2017. We hope you all stay well, and we will see you down the road.

I am writing this, my last article, f rom McMinnvi l le , Oregon following our final campout of the 2016 season. We have weathered high winds and rain here at Olde Stone Village, with more expected, but our chapter has made the most of it enjoying games, renewing friendships, munching goodies, and celebrating fall with our now annual Harvest dinner, a pre-Thanksgiving affair complete with turkey and all the fixings, introduced, hosted and main course provided by members Doug and Berni Batchelor. (Goodness, they spoil us with an amazing breakfast to boot!) Adding laughs to the event is our very own Pictionary game, Fort Vancouver style, complimented with candy favors "passed through the de-calorizing unit" a delightful way to end a fantastic campout year. Several members have expressed a desire for new campout locations so, having elected our 2017 slate of officers, our Wagon master and assistant have busied themselves visiting new parks with the intent of adding some spice to our campout season. Several sites are being considered but nothing will be announced until the first of the year. Looking back at these past 7 months, our chapter has welcomed several new members but, sadly, lost several due to health and other issues. We remain at 19 rigs at this writing which may be the largest membership FVGS has had. New members seem like long-time friends and our chapter has been so blessed to have them join our group. Planning now begins for the annual Christmas gathering as well as monthly game events, another way for members to keep in touch during the holidays and winter season. With that said, FVGS wants to extend its best wishes to all for an amazing holiday season, heart-felt time spent with special friends and family, good health, and safe travels.

We finished out 2016 with luncheons at Hilton Hotel in Yakima. We also bought a table at the Vision for Independence Center’s “Dinner in the Dark” in late Oct. It was a great event for a good cause. Our Nov luncheon, hosted by Bob & Bev, honored our veteran members. We also welcomed guests Joan Hoeft and The Calvillo’s (who subsequently joined our chapter). We voted on officers for 2017. We honored our oldest member, Laura, who at 87 just keeps on going. In fact, she is currently snow birding in Yuma. We are sad to say we lost member Donna Shively. We thanked our 2016 Wagon Master, Jim for a great year. Our 2017 Wagon Master, Sharon, reported some members will extend a few planned 2017 outings with additional destinations. Our Dec luncheon and bazaar was hosted by Joyce Young. She made 3 items that were raffled off. That money goes to our charity account along with the proceeds from the bazaar she arranged. The Strausz’s invited everyone to a Holiday Celebration at their home on the 18th where everyone enjoyed the camaraderie and the goodies. It was a wonderful way to end the year. We have 6 of our member/rigs snow birding. We will keep tabs on them through the winter while we keep the home fires burning as we make plans and reservations. We have luncheons through March and then April at Boardman Marina/RV Park, May at Peach Beach, June at Moses Lake Samboree, July at Pine Near RV Park at Winthrop with extension to Birch Bay, August at Anderson’s Long Beach extending to Cape Disappointment, Sept at Cashmere State Rally and October at Whispering Pines at Cle Elum. See you down the road in 2017!

A new year and many new things awaiting the Good Guy Sams chapter. We are looking forward to Lynden , Moses Lake , and C a s h m e r e S t a t e m e e t i n g s , connecting with old friends and making new ones. We thank our outgoing officers for the fine work they have done and welcome in the new ones. The job of Wagon Master is one that requires m u c h i n v e s t i g a t i n g a n d coordination finding new places and re visiting old favorites. We thank Frank Miller for his fine job during his three years as Master of our Wagons. Now he can come to the outings and just enjoy the fun. Our new Wagon Master is Don Parry and he has a fine slate of outings scheduled for us. We just toured Ronald McDonald house. It was a wonderful experience to see how smoothly such a place runs when i t involves so many volunteers along with a regular staff. They do such a wonderful job helping families with sick children as they manage to minister to the whole family group. Our next outing is Lynden State Meeting where we will be in charge of the ice cream and berries desert night. Don't miss it as we show up in a variety of aprons to serve you with smiles. Of course we can not top last year with the "Trump visit". John Jensen is our new President and he is most capable of leading us all for the next two years. We welcome him to the job. We consider that we "Glamp" at our outings. We have all the amenities you could want in our RVs. We want for nothing. We like each other and we laugh and have fun no matter where or the weather. Looking forward to Hells Canyon and Clarkston before the next Happy Wheels.

We hope everyone had Happy Holidays. And back to normal routines! In November, we met at Donna F e l l o w s ’ h o u s e f o r o u r Thanksgiving potluck and auction. We made enough money with the auction to aid in our contribution of $300 toward the Giving Tree this year. The potluck was good with turkey and the fixings and the relaxed atmosphere. Now to begin getting ready for Christmas. In December, we met at Foley’s on the Green Restaurant in Lakewood. After exchanging Christmas cards and a few goodies, we sat down to lunch. Our end of the year drawing for attendance was won by Pam, a prize of $50. Don and Dottie Nelson did the shopping for the toys for the Salvation Army Giving Tree. In January, we met at Pine Cone Café in University Place. It was good to see most everyone. We all gave a recap of how we are doing. The raffle today was won by Randy Lyyski, a mix of hot chocolate, marshmallows, cookies, and a game of Farkle. Thank you to Dean and Dotty for hosting. Calendars for the year were passed out as we discussed our camp outs. Looking forward to visiting two new parks this year. A correction needs to be made to the November 2016 article. Dean and Dotty celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary, not the 60th. We are looking for new members. If you like good company, a belly laugh or two, monthly camp outs, good food, homemade ice cream, like to play chicken foot dominoes, and can put up with a bunch of seniors, please give our president a call, Carol Thompson, (253) 564-0922. Drive safe and see you down the road.

Wishing you all a very Happy New Year and a fun filled camping season. It’s just around the corner now. Our chapter meets once each month (Nov – March) for a dinner / business meeting. It really is good to see our friends in such a relaxed atmosphere. Several of our members are snowbirds and from reports they are enjoying the warmth of our southern states. They just don’t know what they are missing with our cold (brrrrr), sometimes snowy, blowy, wet weather of the great NW. Come to think about it, that is probably why they are snowbirds. At our December Christmas party / meeting, from in-house money making raffles or auctions, we made monetary donations to Hospice of Northwest, Special Olympics and the Skagit Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault agency. We ended the evening with our gift exchange. It has been reported that “Peppy La Too”, our special skunk, is hibernating and is really enjoying his winter home. He has his own bedroom and TV. From the sounds of it, he may not want to leave. It is with great sadness to report we lost one of our members, Paulette Burrell. Please hold her husband, Ed, in your prayers as we all grieve with him the loss of this beautiful person. To know her is to love her. God’s peace Ed.

We held our election of officers at our meeting in Cashmere. Sonny Proctor wasn’t paying close attention when nominations for president were made, and he was elected our new president. Steve Raddysh was carried over as Secretary/Treasurer. With the closing of the Yakama Nation RV Park, Section 8 had to find a new venue for our annual outing. Wine Country RV Park in Prosser was our destination for 2016. It is a great park. We had a very nice clubroom for our activities and the staff was very accommodating. As our outing was sandwiched between the State outing in Cashmere and the Prosser Balloon Festival, the timing was perfect. We had a dinner and held our “Court of No Appeals” on Monday after driving from Cashmere on Sunday. John Jensen presided over the court and, with a very happy grin on his face, out-going president Lloyd Hartley served as sheriff. Everyone had a good time. Of course, there is a whacky-backy store right next to the RV park, so some of it could have been drug induced. Some of the group stayed over for the Balloon Festival which is really fun to watch and some of us have participated in the launch and recovery of balloons in the past. We urge folks from every Good Sam chapter to join us at our short business meetings held at each of the State Good Sam outings to check us out and join the fun at our annual outing. Section 8 is strictly a fun-loving chapter. For more information, contact Sonny Proctor at [email protected], Steve Raddysh at [email protected], or Lloyd Hartley at [email protected].

This Christmas Season Three Rivers Sams again wrapped packages at Kennewick Ranch and Home. We were delighted with the outcome. We made over $5,700 from wrapping packages and selling the wonderful cards that our “Card Ladies” make. Gift card boxes were especially popular this year. Plans are already underway for next year. We so appreciate the wonderful support we receive from Ranch and Home – they are fantastic. Three Rivers Sams continue to meet every Thursday morning for breakfast and fellowship at Dennys in Kennewick. It helps to keep our chapter together and our members close to each other. Surprisingly, when the State Directors joined our group for breakfast one morning, it was discovered that they and Bud Dazey had a common ancestor. Small World. We have our camping schedule set for next year and are looking forward to an exciting camping season. May the New Year bring each and every one of you “Happy Trails.”

We are now at that time of year that our meetings are held at the Cherry Hills Mobile Park thanks to the generosity of Dale and Emily Brown. It is a warm and inviting place for friendship, fun and food. As in past years different hosts for each month present us with different main courses with the rest of us filling in with side dishes. The meals have been outstanding. We started off in October with 5 kinds of delicious homemade soups by the Koops and Bares. November was the tantalizing baked salmon by the Everetts. The salmon caught by Cindy not Herb. Now we know who the real fisher person is. Lastly the D e c e m b e r m e a l f e a t u r e d scrumptious ham and turkey provided by the Eggens. In December we had our annual white elephant gift exchange which was fun for all. Renae Koop ended up with the coveted fish hat which has tendency to show up every year. Connect to our Facebook account by Kathy Underwood for pictures and more info. One of our youngest members Shirely Bare just had a birthday. Like most of us older members she is looking for the answers to all life questions, such as Who let the Dogs out? Where’s the Beef? How to get to Sesame Street? Why you are asked for your two cents worth but only get a penny for your thoughts. Shirely keep looking in that glass of wine, the answers will come. If not who cares. Congratulations are in order for one of our members. Terrie Kessie has been appointed the Assistant Superintendent for the Educational Service District 123 in Pasco. She will lead the ESD teaching and educational staff which will have a positive learning impact for 73000 students. Good Luck Terrie!!

As I am writing this newsletter, I can't help but think of our chapter members who are enjoying being down south right now. We, up here in Eastern Washington are about buried in snow and news of coming ice storm. Spring cannot get here soon enough. Seems we have all had a bout with long lingering colds and or flus. We had a small turnout in late October for our bi-annual Hway Clean-up. We also had a large gathering of friends and family of Jerry Clayburn at the Chewelah Casino to say our good-byes as he was moving to Iowa. He has been a very valued friend and will miss him at our camp outs and gatherings. In November, we did have a large turnout gathering for lunch at Dickie's Barbecue Pit, a favorite spot. In December, we had seventeen of us get together for a Christmas Party at Dean and Sharon Crumps "'Eagle Nest". A beautiful setting at Deer Lake. We had a great potluck and fun time of exchanging gifts. In January, we met at The Prospec tors for lunch and fellowship. Eighteen of us were able to come together and catch up on "what we have all been up to." We hope all you out there have had a wonderful Christmas Holiday and are starting off with a safe and healthy, Happy New Year. Hope to see you down the road on our adventures and especially as we gather together for our next Samboree Rally.

The Campfire

The S’more Song(Tune of On Top of Old Smokey)On top of my cracker,So yummy and sweet,I’ll put on some chocolateTo make a good treat.

Then comes the marshmallow,So sticky and soft,And then one more cracker,So it won’t fall out.

I put it together,So gently I press.If I squeeze it too hard,It will make a big mess.

I’m ready to eat it,This thing called a S’more.Oh my, it’s so yummy,I think I’ll have some more!
