ALL ABOUT NNLC
NNLC Charter
CLUB PURPOSE
The purpose of the New Neighbors League Club
(NNLC) is to bring together the new neighbors
of the area so they may meet and become friends
while adjusting to new surroundings. The Club is
a not-for-profit social organization with a variety
of interest groups and special activities, including
monthly luncheons and programs.
HISTORY
NNLC is the official social club of New
Neighbors League, Inc. (NNLI), which was
founded in Dayton, Ohio in 1939 by Theodore R.
Briggs. Out of the business of greeting new
residents grew a recognized need for a social
organization allowing newcomers to meet others
who were also new to the area. Theodore’s wife,
Bunny, lived in many cities throughout the
United States and knew the loneliness associated
with moving into unfamiliar areas. With the aid
of the Ohio Federated Women’s Club, the
Constitution and By-Laws for NNLC were
drafted. The first chapter was chartered in
Cincinnati, Ohio in 1943. As the greeting service
operations were established, new club chapters
were founded. Dayton was home for New
Neighbors League until 1986 when Corporate
and Club Headquarters were moved to Atlanta,
Georgia and Cheryl Beaudreault assumed the
position of National President. Currently, there
are fourteen operations nationwide. Each chapter
operates independently within established
guidelines and under the direction of a local
Board of Directors and a Club Director.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership in NNLC is open to any local woman wanting to meet new people and
make new friends in the community. Prospective
members should attend a Welcome Coffee held on the first Tuesday of the month. There are two
parts to the initial membership fee. First, a one-
time lifetime membership fee of $25.00 to join
NNLC with transfer privileges to any sister chapter; this fee is forwarded to National Club
Headquarters. Second, there is a $25
membership fee that remains with the local
chapter to cover administrative expenses (this amount is pro-rated according to the month
joined). On-going members will pay a $25
annual fee each year in January.

Coffee
Moving into a new community can be exciting, overwhelming, and often times, lonely. NNLC can help make the transition easier by helping women find new friends and
activities. If you know of someone new to the area, invite her to join us at the monthly coffee where she can learn more about
everything NNLC has to
offer.
The next coffee is:
Tuesday, October 7th at
10:00am at St. Louis County Library, Daniel Boone Branch, 300 Clarkson
Road, Ellisville, MO 63011. Meet in the Red Room. (Parking on the north side (lower end) makes for easier access to meeting
rooms.)
Page 4 October 2014
Whether you “dress” for the event or not, please be sure to come and enjoy the beautiful view from the restaurant, the costume contest, and the fun and friendship that NNLC offers us
all.

WELCOME
TO
FALL!
October has to be one of my favorite months of the
year. I love everything about it! Colors, smells, tastes too – pumpkin being one of the best
tastes in the world!
It also always reminds me of my best job – office manager of a mid-sized church in Indianapolis. St. John’s ran a preschool for three and four year olds and the teachers were special friends to me. Each month I could expect the kids to come trouping down the hallway to my office to sing the latest song they learned. Of course, I praised them to the skies for their accomplishment and loved it every time they arrived. October was always fun because they would dress in their Halloween costumes and come sing about Twelve Little Pumpkins, a song which ended in them all shouting “BOO!” My startled reaction always brought laughter and delight – they had
scared Miss Gay!
This October our NNLC luncheon will be held at the Wine Country Garden and will feature our Annual Halloween Costume Contest. This is one of our most delightful luncheons as we have some very, very clever ladies who design their costumes and make us
laugh out loud.
Director’s & President’s Messages
Happy Autumn! I just love this season because of the cooler weather and the changing of the tree colors. This is a great time to
go on a bike ride with the Pedal
Pushers or the Adventure group.
A very big event in St. Louis is the celebration of Oktoberfest in and around the St Louis metropolitan area. One of the top three Oktoberfests in the nation
is The Soulard Oktoberfest.
Established in 2004, The Soulard Oktoberfest got its start by raising money for the Soulard area non-profit organizations and the St. Louis area German
cultural organization.
Since its beginnings, this event has grown from a few hundred people to thousands. This year, they have
added a carnival and free parking.
The admission of only $5 offers German music and lots of beer and food. The event will be on October 10th - October 12th. If you like the Fall harvest, visit The BEST OF MISSOURI MARKET & MORE which will takes place at the Missouri Botanical Garden on October 4th and 5th. This event is the celebration of everything made in Missouri and offers hundreds of vendors around the state that sell
arts, crafts, food and much more.
Lastly, enjoy “All-Hallows Eve” which we know as “Halloween”. It was introduced to America in 1840 by the Irish immigrants. I leave you with this quote: O’ pumpkin pie, your time has come ’round
again and I am autumnrifically
happy! ~Terri Guillemets

Mugs for the Homeless
Thanks for all the donations of coffee mugs
to be used at the "Bridge". They serve meals to the homeless five days a week so the mugs go through the dishwasher many times and often get chipped. These new
mugs brighten up the tables and give the Bridge quite a variety to use. I did not count the mugs donated as they came in
over several weeks but you were all quite generous. Thank you so much for caring for others. Charlotte Calhoun

on and on.

RESTAURANT REVIEW/ StL Trivia
ST. LOUIS TRIVIA
BELLEFONTAINE
CEMETARY 1849 It's not often that cemeteries come up in
conversation as attractions, but believe it or not, this is one of the places that is interesting to visit. Dating back to 1849, Bellefontaine Cemetery (and Calvary Cemetery next to it) contain the graves of many historical figures such as: William S. Burroughs (writer), Adolphus Busch (founder of Anheuser-Busch), - William Clark of Lewis and Clark, which is a must to visit. Add to that the people
buried next door at Calvary: William Tecumseh Sherman (Civil War General), - Dred Scott (of the infamous Supreme Court decision), - Tennessee Williams (playwright), - Rene Auguste Chouteau (co-founder of StL). There’s a route to follow with a white line marking it on the
winding drives-makes it simple.
Dave & I stopped at the office and got a
map and $5 booklet that gives you history and details. Some folks on the list you'll know and others not, but you’ll
understand once you read their blurb.
Even if you’re not a history buff, the architecture of the graves and mausoleums is amazing. It’s a lovely and
serene place (314 acres).
These cemeteries are among the hidden gems of St. Louis. It is a wonderful place to visit. You can literally see the transformation of the city and country before your eyes as the graves go from simple to elaborate throughout time. These are not simply cemeteries. They are capsules of history,
beautiful and insightful.
Which Wich? Superior Sandwiches
Usually, when you read a “restaurant review” it is written about an upscale “fu fu” place. This “restaurant review” is about a completely un–fu fu sandwich franchise that recently opened 3 locations in the St. Louis area. The name of the place is
“Which Wich” (as in Which Sandwich?)
When we lived in Denver, CO they opened a Which Wich in an area that had at least 5 other fast food sandwich places. Within 6 months, 3 had closed and the lines at “Which Wich” were getting quite long...but who wouldn’t want to wait a few minutes for an
awesome made-to- order sandwich?
They are committed to offering the best sandwiches around and feature more than 50 varieties of customizable “wiches” (sandwiches) in small, medium and large and their small is HUGE. Their assortment makes ALL of the other sandwich restaurants look ordinary! Of course, they have all of the usual main ingredients, for example: ham and pork, turkey, chicken, seafood, Italian, vegetarian, classics, breakfast and BBQ pork. The “classics” includes things like egg salad and meat loaf. You can also get a “Bowlwich” (salad) or a Lettucewich (lettuce wrap) again etc. etc. etc. They have 10 different cheeses. Just a few of their more unusual garnishes include olive salad, cold slaw, dried cranberries, hummus, candied walnuts, garlic, 4 kinds of mustard and 5 kinds of mayo!! Additionally, they have upscale signature house chips, hand-dipped milk shakes and fresh
from the oven cookies.
When you walk in, you select a main ingredient sandwich bag; there are probably 10-12 different ones. The bags list all of the possible options and you check what you want right on the bag. Some of the options include hot or cold, double meat, double cheese, type of bread or if you want a salad or a lettuce wrap rather than bread. Once you have checked everything you want, put your name at the bottom and pay the cashier. Then your personal sandwich bags moves along what looks like a clothes line and eventually your customized “wich” is placed inside. I suggest writing your name on the back of the bag too; then you can tell how close you are to getting your awesome sandwich!!!
Hope you will try them soon, you won’t be sorry!!!

SHARE YOUR EXPERTISE
Anyone can start a new group activity—lunch or dinner group,
cards, whatever...
In addition to our activity groups, we’re also looking for people who can share their expertise in a work-shop. Would you be willing to run a couple hour training session on some-thing you are good at? We would really love to see your skills. The process is the same as that for starting a group. Just send a description of what you plan to cover, possible dates and location to meet and some con-tact information to the Happy Wanderer Editor. Be sure to give people enough advance notice so they
can RSVP to you.
We all have hidden talents. Care to
share yours with us?
