FEBRUARY 2017 LOVE IS IN THE AIR! The Adult Day Care Center Of Henderson (ADCCH) welcomes February. Valentine’s Day is the heart of the month. Our Center staff shares their heart, fun spirit, courage and enthusiasm in the love we have for our participants and each other. The Henderson Center responds to the important mission of supporting senior citizens in their efforts to remain independent, with dignity in the community. Our Center will continue to offer the fun contemporary activities that our participants enjoy, including: A daily exercise program, Tai Chi, Music Therapy, Brain Games, Gardening, Bingo competitions, Arts & Crafts and live entertainment in the afternoons. Please join us in this loving spirit as we celebrate the month of FEBRUARY.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM JANUARY
January began with a bang! Our New Year’s Eve Celebration was awesome. We were wonderfully entertained by Achie Alexander. Our seniors stated how they enjoyed his music and his mad cap jokes. It’s not uncommon to see everyone on the floor dancing when Marc Love is in the house. We would like to encourage everyone to join us for our afternoon live entertainment. If you think you missed your opportunity to buy our Senior Art Calendar, they are still on sale for $10 and they are quite beautiful. Our seniors have been very busy in our Arts and Crafts classes painting colorful abstract masterpieces. Sign Language classes on Thursdays have been a smash, and our daily Bingo is enjoyed by everyone.
NEW ARRIVALS We are pleased to welcome the new participants who became a part our Center family in January:
CLOSURES There will be no closures in the month of February.
GET PLUGGED IN! Visit our computer lab here at the center. It is located in the Quiet Room by our Arts & Crafts department. The software suits all of your needs with its vast technology.

EVENTS IN FEBRUARY
Saturday’s are Special! We would like everyone to join us for our fun filled Saturdays. Please join us for Tai Chi every Wednesday 10:00am. You also won’t want to miss Thursday afternoon Spanish and Sign Language Class with Betty, and we have started our Henderson “Brain Games Thursdays”. Caregivers are invited to all activities. It has been a lot of fun for our participants. We would love to have you join us. On February 3rdth for our Super Bowl Party Day February 28th for our Mardi Gras celebration February 14th, we will be celebrating
Valentine’s Day. We are asking everyone to
wear Red, the energy color of love. Please don’t forget to submit your recipes. See attached flyer for details. Be on the look - out for some surprise events throughout the month. If these are not your regularly scheduled days, we would still love to see you here.
GETTING SCENT-IMENTAL A new aromatherapy scent, Chamomile, which helps one to relax and enjoy this month full of love, will be the aromatic of choice as we continue with our aromatherapy series.
SEE WHAT’S IN BLOOM! Our vegetable garden is dormant for the winter. We will replant in the spring.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Our birthday party will be held on the 4th Wednesday of the month, February 24th, 2017. Our February celebrants are Ramiro G (2/2) Franklin S. (2/5), Helen S. (2/10), Joseph P. (2/10) Sara O. (2/10) and. (2/12), Bettie S. Entertainment will be provided and birthday treats will be served as well.
SUPPORT GROUP We have Support Group Meetings! Meetings will be on the 2nd and the 4th Tuesday 10-11am. Please see attached flyer for more details on caregiver support programs and community forum. Everyone is invited to attend!

Recipe of the Month Submitted by: All Nevada Senior Services Participant’s
Valentine’s Day Strawberry Pie
Ingredients:1 Pie Plate FillingCrust 1 Granny Smith Apple for flavorSugar 4 cups of fresh Strawberries halvedFlour 1 cup of regular sugarButter 1 cup of white sugar1 pinch of baking powder 1 cup of brown sugarShortening – 1 pinch of oil 1 stick of butter1 ¼ cup of water Vanilla Extract2 tablespoons of cornstarch
Directions:Once you have mixed all ingredients for pie crust, place the pie crust dough into your pie plate.
Pinch the edge of the pie crust to give it the pie look. Combine all of your ingredients other thanyour fresh strawberries together in a bowl then pour into the crust. Top it with the 4 cups of halvedfresh strawberries. Chill pie for 2 4 hours. Serve pie with whipped cream if desired.

Valuing and U lizing Arts in Care Planning
Living with a chronic health condition such as Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and other health challenges can disrupt daily living, cause discomfort and changes in cognition. These changes can limit the ability to engage in meaningful conversations, outings, hobbies and other activities that were previously enjoyed. Studies have shown that art and music can positively impact wellbeing by adding value to life, promoting cognitive abilities, and providing a sense of empowerment. Art and music are universal creative outlets enjoyed by many regardless of age and ability. Indulging in art, music and creative dance has been successful in stimulating the mind, reducing depression and anxiety, increasing cognition and sensory stimulation, while also improving overall wellbeing. Utilizing art, music and creative dance as part of a comprehensive approach to care planning can increase the quality of care for the care recipient and the care partner. Understanding the benefits of the arts can provide a full range of care options and improve the care plan.

Increase Your Crea ve Expression Listen to Tunes Music has the ability to transport us to another time or place. Play your favorite tunes around the house as a way to keep the mind and body active. Draw Buy an adult coloring book, paint supplies and puzzles. Providing different art options promotes creativity! Explore Take a stroll around the park, check out a local museum, and if you're feeling adventurous, head to a concert or a play. Teamwork Create a masterpiece together. Participating in art as a team provides a sense of connection. Dance Move around the house and dance as a way to release frustration. Tap your feet, wave your hands and enjoy music, while seated. Join a Zumba class or water aerobics group to increase activity and create a social atmosphere to enjoy!

Many illnesses that commonly affect older adults are manageable with a change in lifestyle, medications, modifications in diet, exercise and other daily living behaviors. Through the Nevada Senior Services’ team approach, Southern Nevada’s finest board certified Geriatricians, individuals and their families work together to improve and maintain the highest quality of life for men and women in our community.
