HAPPY THURSDAY

Bellwork:• Copy this model onto

your bellwork.• Use this same

information and your notes (from yesterday) to fill in the chart on Page 17 of your I.B.B. – only the carbohydrate column.

• Notecard definitions due TOMORROW.

Make sure your I.B.B.s are

updated and organized.

StandardB.9A – Compare the structure and functions of

different types of biomolecules.

Essential Question How are lipids essential for life?

Page 7: HAPPY THURSDAY Bellwork: Copy this model onto your bellwork. Use this same information and your notes (from yesterday) to fill in the chart on Page 17

Lipids are molecules that are not soluble in water. They are nonpolar and hydrophobic.

Page 8: HAPPY THURSDAY Bellwork: Copy this model onto your bellwork. Use this same information and your notes (from yesterday) to fill in the chart on Page 17

The three categories of lipids include:• Fats

• Oils

• Waxes

Lipids can be used to:• Store energy.• Contain the most

energy per gram of any biomolecule. (9 Cal/gram)

• To form biological membranes and waterproof coverings. (waxy cuticle)

Many lipids are formed when a glycerol molecule combines with compounds called fatty acids.

Lipids contain only carbon (C), hydrogen (H), and oxygen (O).

Lipids

Structure: Functions:

Monomer: Polymer:

•Chain shaped•A backbone and 3 tails

Elements:•C, H, O

•Source for long term energy•Primary component of the cell membrane•waxy coating on the top of leaves (cuticle).

Good to know:•Saturated fats: contain single bonds•Unsaturated fats: contain double bonds

•Fatty acids •Triglyceride (lipid)

Energy in Food

• Burning carbohydrates – watch and write down your observations• Burning lipids – take notes and write down any observations• Calories in food – take notes…MAKE SURE you write down how many

calories per gram in each biomolecule AND the daily recommended allowance
