A Message from a Pastor

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18, ESV). On Sunday morning October 27, 2013 I shared from Matthew 8:23-27. It is the pas-sage in Matthew’s Gospel that tells of a storm on the Sea of Galilee when Jesus had compelled his disciples to enter a boat and “cross over to the other side.” During their crossing over, a terrible storm came. As the winds blew and the waves crashed the little ship was literally sinking. The disciples called out to Jesus to save them from perishing. Jesus responded by calling their faith into question and then rebuking the wind and the sea. The scripture tells us the wind and the sea obeyed him and immediately calmed. The disciples were astonished and the person Jesus Christ was magnified showing clearly that he alone is Lord of all. He taught his disciples and us that he can be trusted in all circumstances. I would think that is why Paul, because of his experiences and under the leadership and inspiration of the Holy Spirit could write: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 ESV). Whatever we face we can rest in the truth that the sovereign God of this universe is in control and that he has worked all things together for our good and ultimately for his glory. We can be a people of continuous thanksgiving. As we approach Thanksgiving 2013 it is my prayer that we individually and collectively as the body of Christ put into practice these three directives given us in this verse: 1) The command, ”Give thanks…” This is an imperative. As the Apostle of the Lord, Paul is commanding the people of God that this is what they must do. They must give thanks to God. 2) The context, “in all circumstances…” This is all together comprehensive. If conditions are favorable, “give thanks.” If conditions are unfavor-able, “give thanks.” You must trust Him that though you may not understand what He is doing He understands perfectly and fully, enabling each of us as the Lord’s people to give thanks in every circumstance. 3) The constraint, “for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” It is God’s will that you should give thanks to God in every circumstance. Giving thanks is easy when everything is great, but how in the world is it possible for me to give thanks in these bad circumstances, in this difficulty, in this trial, with this hurt? How can I give thanks to Almighty God when the world seems to be coming apart all around me? And Paul gives the answer: “It is God’s will for you,” he says, “in Christ Jesus.” It is because of your relationship to Jesus Christ that you will be able to give thanks. Let us be known as a thankful people. In Him, Pastor Mendle
