Keeping an EYE Out forSigns of Glaucoma
It is estimated that 60 millionpeople worldwide suffer fromglaucoma - 4 million living theUnited States alone. This January,National Glaucoma AwarenessMonth, Belmont Village Seniorliving wants to help prevent theprogression of this debilitatingdisease by encouraging residentsand their families to have theireyes checked for glaucoma.
If glaucoma goes untreated, vision loss will usually occur inthese three stages:
• Blind spots in yourperipheral vision (hazardousfor important activities suchas driving)
• Tunnel vision (loss ofperipheral vision)
• Total blindness (vision lossdue to glaucoma cannot berestored)
According to Glaucoma.org, theeconomic impact of Glaucoma tothe U.S. government is estimatedto be over $1.5 billion annually.
Often referred to as the “sneakthief of sight”, glaucoma is aleading cause of preventable
blindness worldwide. The Centersfor Disease Control andPrevention estimates that nearlyhalf of those affected by glaucomado not know they are afflicted. This staggering statistic is due tothe fact that vision damage is sogradual you may not even noticeit until it has reached an advancedstage. Since there are often nosigns or noticeable symptoms ofglaucoma, we urge everyone tohave regular eye exams to checkfor this disease.
Because the risk for developingglaucoma increases with age, regular vision screenings areimportant. Persons with diabetes,a family history of glaucoma, nearsightedness or who are ofAfrican-American andMexican-American origin are at anincreased risk of the disease andshould therefore be checked morefrequently. An annualophthalmologist eye exam isrecommended.
“We urge everyone to make aNew Year’s resolution to care fortheir eyes”.

A New Year, a New Start
Happy New Year to all our residents.
Here’s hoping the next 12 months bring
you joy, peace and prosperity.
A Tour of Times SquareAlthough Times Square is best
known as the site of annual NewYear’s Eve festivities, there is muchmore to discover about this iconicNew York City neighborhood.
In 1904, the New York Timesbuilt the Times Tower on 43rdStreet just off Broadway. At thetime, the area in front of thebuilding was called LongacreSquare, but it was soon renamedTimes Square.
Times Square’s shape is actuallynot that of a square but rather abow tie, formed by theintersection of Seventh Avenue,42nd Street and Broadway.
Sometimes referred to as “TheCrossroads of the World,” TimesSquare is known for huge lightedbillboards and illuminatedbuilding facades in addition toflagship stores and historictheaters.
Several movie scenes have been
filmed in Times Square.Performing arts students dance inthe district’s streets in “Fame,” apost-apocalyptic version appearsin “I Am Legend,” and Tom Cruisewalks through an eerily emptyTimes Square in “Vanilla Sky.”
About 300,000 people passthrough Times Square daily. Tohelp accommodate all thosevisitors, part of the district hasbeen redeveloped into apedestrian-friendly zone withvehicle-free plazas.

DISCOVERIESTHE EVOLUTION OF HOLIDAY
GIFT-GIVINGThe practice of giving gifts at
the beginning of winter tracesback to ancient Rome.
Ancient Romans held year endcelebrations to honor Saturn, theirharvest god; and Mithras, the godof light. People prepared specialfoods, decorated their homes withgreenery, and joined in singingand gift giving.
Christmas Presents and TheirReligious Significance
Sometime after the birth ofJesus, three wise men, also knownas Magi, came to visit thenewborn. They brought three giftswith them to honor Jesus, whichhad prophetic meaning:
• Gold- a gift for a king• Incense- a gift for a priest• Myrrh- a burial ointment
for one who would dieChristmas gifts were meant to
remind people of the Magi’sofferings to Jesus and of God’s giftof Christ.
St. Nicholas and ChristmasStockings
In the 4th century, St. Nicholas, the bishop of Myra, had areputation for his generosity andkindness, especially towardchildren. He was known for givingtreats and small presents to them.
St. Nicholas has evolved intothe magical Santa Claus of today.
Christmas Stocking TreatsEvolve Into Christmas Presents
Common gifts were homemadefoods and sweets, oranges (whichwere a special treat as they wererare), handcrafted gifts and otheruseful handmade items.
These types of gifts were mostcommon up until the industrialrevolution when there was a shiftfrom homemade to manufacturedChristmas gifts in America.
Along with the industrialrevolution came the advent ofadvertising, which, by the
1840’s, was an integral part ofsociety. The coalition of these twoentities eventually revolutionizedthe simple custom of Christmasgift giving into thecommercialized sensation that itis today.
