t is a pleasure for me to introduce myself as the new General Manager of the Club.
To share a little about myself, I came to Hong Kong in 1986 as a young boy and was schooled here until returning to England for university. I started my career in 2000 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong as a trainee waiter, and from there worked in various other five-star hotels, slowly moving up the

ranks. As some of you will remember I worked at the Aberdeen Marina Club from 2012 until 2015. As the Assistant Director of Food & Beverage, I was heavily involved in the opening of Portside and La Cave, and the renovation of The Deck, The Balcony and The Horizon.
It’s great to be back again, and I look forward to this new venture, with many projects and upgrades in several areas of the Club currently being planned. My team and I will strive to continue the Club’s tradition of exceptional service, and I thank you for your ongoing support and feedback.
In the meantime, I look forward to meeting you in person at the Club in the near future.
本人非常榮幸成為深灣遊艇會的新任總經理。我於1986年從英國來到香港，並在這裏接受教育， 後來返回英國繼續升讀大學。
我的職業生涯開始於2000年，在香港東方文華酒店任職侍應訓練生，其後再於好幾間五星級酒店工作及晉升。我曾經於2012到2015年期間在本會擔任助理餐飲部總監，當年曾參與過Portside及 La Cave的籌備及開幕工作；與及咖啡室，露台泰國餐廳及海天閣的裝修工程等。

With more than 15 years extensive experience in Western and Asian Cuisine, Chef Mark will bring an exciting new dining experience to The Backroom at La Cave.

First-time visitors and regulars alike often head straight for Dotonbori and its amazing food and nightlife scene. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see the famous Glico running-man billboard, which has been in place, in various forms, since 1935. This is a fun area to just walk around, but come before dinner so you’ll have plenty of space to sample a good range of the tasty indoor and outdoor delicacies on offer. The Don Quijote discount store reopened its revolving Ferris wheel ride last year, to the delight of many. Fixed to the front of the store, the ride was closed over a decade ago, but is back and well worth a spin of you feel like people-watching and a sit-down break. Running north from Dotonbori’s Glico running-man sign at Ebusi Bridge, Shinsaibashi-suji is a 600-metre-long covered shopping arcade (or shotengai) filled with all kinds of retail outlets and restaurants. Be sure to turn down any side streets that look interesting, as some more traditional Japanese shops are still tucked away here between the brand names and modern stores. For a more local, and even longer shotengai, head across town to Tenjinbashi-suji, which at 2.6km long is not only the longest in Osaka, but in the whole of Japan. One of the largest of its kind in the world, this captivating walk-through aquarium will take you through several marine habitats. A wide variety of Japanese marine life is also on display, including freshwater species, reptiles and mammals. Display themes include Pacific Ocean, Great Barrier Reef, Antarctica, Deep Sea Zone, and Ecuadorian Jungle. The largest tank is 30 feet deep and holds two whale sharks and a number of manta rays. Shinsekai 新世界
This is Osaka’s old “downtown” area, which still retains a kind of nostalgic atmosphere, and some say it’s the best place to get a feel for the real Osaka. The streets are lined with colourful and photogenic retro-style shop displays, and Tsutenkaku Tower is a good place from which to enjoy the view. Opened in 1956 to replace an earlier tower than burned down in 1943, it was designed by Tachu Naito, whose more famous Tokyo Tower opened in 1958. 新世界是大阪古老的“市中心”，仍然保留著懷舊的風情，是感受真正的大阪的最佳景點。街道兩旁都是色彩繽紛的懷舊商店，而通天閣是欣賞美景的好地方。於1956年開放，取代了早於1943年燒毀的塔樓，由建築師內藤多仲設計，其著名的東京大廈於1958年建成。

Dating back to the 16th century, but rebuilt in its present form in 1931, Osaka Castle’s highlights include the five-story, 42-meter-tall main tower containing a museum with exhibits related to the history of the castle and the city. There are impressive views over Osaka from the top-floor observation deck, and the surrounding grounds of Osaka Castle Park are pleasant to explore, especially during cherry-blossom season. The adjacent Nishinomaru Garden is a lawn area with hundreds of cherry trees, the former Osaka Guest House and a teahouse, and provides fine views back to the castle. Osaka boasts many fine examples of modern architecture, and perhaps the best known is the Umeda Sky Building. The top sections of its two towers are joined by a circular corridor, accessible from the ground via elevator and escalator. Getting there is half the fun, though perhaps not for the faint-hearted or vertigo sufferers. The views from the 40/F Floating Garden Observatory are amazing, but don’t miss the urban garden down below with its pleasant paths, fountains, and ponds, and the Takimikoji retro shopping street, designed to resemble early-20th century Osaka. First vintage in 1991, a Sauvignon Blanc from Les Pavots vineyard. One hundred percent barrel-fermented and aged nine months in the barrel with regular bâtonnage. It’s a fresh and crispy white with touch of toasty almond that can match well with your afternoon repast.

U nder construction from 1869 to 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge is one of New York City’s oldest architectural icons, and for some years was its tallest structure, standing at almost 83 metres tall. Its twin Gothic-style stone towers
make it as recognisable as San Francisco’s later Golden Gate Bridge, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964.
It was designed by its chief engineer, John A. Roebling, a German-born civil engineer and wire-rope maker who specialised in designing and building suspension bridges. While surveying the shore area of the Brooklyn to Manhattan ferry during the early planning stages for the bridge in 1869, his foot was crushed by an incoming ferry. He died of tetanus 24 days later, and his assistant and son Washington Roebling took over the bridge project.
In 1870, while working in one of the bridge’s two underground chambers, which were used to lower the two towers’ foundations down through the riverbed to the underlying bedrock, the younger Roebling developed decompression sickness. Forced to stay at home, from where he could view the bridge with binoculars, he shared his duties with his wife Emily, who oversaw the construction on-site, and is largely credited with its completion.
Large crowds attended the opening ceremony May 24, 1883, and Emily Roebling was the first to cross – her husband still being too ill to attend. After an hour-long fireworks display and many speeches, the bridge was opened to the public just before midnight, and more than 1,800 vehicles and 150,000 people crossed between Brooklyn and Manhattan over the next 24 hours. More than 100,000 vehicles now cross the Brooklyn Bridge daily, with an unknown number of recreational walkers, joggers, pedestrian commuters and cyclists.
A walk across the Brooklyn Bridge is one the bucket lists of many visitors to New York. For the best views, walk from the Brooklyn side towards Manhattan at sunrise, avoid the bicycle lanes if you don’t want to be shouted at by angry New York cyclists, and set aside at least one hour for your walk.

New Squash Children’s Group Class on Saturday 全新兒童壁球課程 - 逢星期六
Squash is a fantastic sport for competition and recreation. Learning squash can start with fun games. Private squash classes offered in the Club will teach racquet skills, footwork, court rules and
safety, eye-hand-feet-ball co-ordination, stretching exercises and concentration. Learning squash will also help in releasing pressure and preparing mental and physical fitness for competitions.
Believe it or not, racquetball is one of the UK’s fastest growing sports. It’s played on any regular squash court and is similar to squash. A larger ball, which does not need warming up like in squash, and a shorter racquet are used. Racquetball has become very popular with players that may suffer from a sore back or bad knees. Due to the nature of the game, racquetball is less explosive than squash and provides you with a well-balanced cardio workout.
Group squash classes will teach racquet skills, footwork, court rules and safety, eye-hand-feet-ball co-ordination, stretching exercises and concentration.

If you exercise outdoors, Strava is a great app to track your performance. It’s free and you can use it with any smartphone, but it is generally more accurate when used with a GPS fitness watch such as a Garmin. Strava will track your speed, pace, route and even compare your performance to others who pass by on the same routes.
If you want to track your food intake, then MyFitnessPal is a good way to keep an eye on your consumption versus your activity. Once you’ve entered the majority of your regularly consumed food and drinks, it is a quick and handy way to make sure your calories-in are at least equal to your calories-out.

Aberdeen Urban History Walks
Join us for a walk through the streets in and around Aberdeen to see our local historical spots with some interesting insights. The walk commences from the Club at 9.30am, and should end by midday at the
latest. The walk passes by: Holy Spirit Seminary; old and new Dockyards; Aberdeen Promenade; Tin Hau Temple; the old Aberdeen Police Station; Aberdeen Technical College and even a secret tunnel. The walk is led by our Director of Sports & Recreation and local history enthusiast, Giles Leonard. The walks are suitable for all ages, but ideally for children aged eight and above. Members should wear comfortable clothing and shoes, bring along their own water bottle and wear a hat in the sunny weather.

Congratulations to our Director of Sports & Recreation for taking part in one of the World’s most renowned triathlons – Challenge Roth in Bavaria, Germany. You may have seen Giles training hard in the pool and gym over a 24-week period

Redress is back running its annual Get Redressed clothing drive this October to raise awareness of the environmental impact of fashion, and the importance of keeping clothes in use for longer
and out of landfills.
Please drop your unwanted clothing in the boxes located at 5/F Health Club from October 1 to 25.
Donations will be collected and carefully redistributed to local charities, directly benefiting refugees, babies and children living in poverty, women at risk and the elderly.
Top-quality clothing will be sold to raise funds for Redress in an educational pop-up shop following the drive. Clothes that cannot be reused will either be down-cycled or recycled into new yarns.
What to donate: Good quality men's, women's and children clothes.
Not accepted: Shoes, school/work uniforms and home textiles.
Thank you to all Club Members who donated their unwanted clothes last year. We collected over nine tonnes of clothes in total, and are very much looking forward to you joining us in our mission to cut waste out of fashion again this year.

Redressed將在十月再次在本會舉辦Get Redressed回收衣物活動，活動目的希望提高大家認識時裝對環境的影響，以及避免輕易地棄掉衣物到堆填區。
請在10月1至25日內把捐贈的衣物放到五樓健康中心的回收箱。
回收到的衣物，Redressed將分發給本地的慈善機構，令有需要的難民、婴孩、兒童、婦女及長者受惠。
較優質的衣物將出售以為Redressed籌募資金，用作臨時回收衣物場地之用。而沒並選用之衣物，將循環再造為新紡織品。
回收要求：品質保持良好的男裝、女裝及童裝衣物。
不接收：鞋覆、校服、制服、內衣及睡衣。

Child Safety and Behaviour 兒童安全及禮儀• Please remind your children not to
run or shout in the 2M corridor.
• Children should always be supervised by an adult member or family assis-tant. No running, screaming or rough playing is permitted.
• Parents are reminded that the super-vision of children in the swimming pool is not the responsibility of life-guards. Children under the age of 12 should always be accompanied and watched by a parent or other family member over the age of 16.
• Please note that no person aged seven or over may enter the changing room of the opposite sex. Accompa-nying adults must also prevent chil-dren from making excessive noise or misbehaving.
