Happy Hollow is home to a dozen species of reptiles – most of which you can only meet during special zoo classes! Learn what makes a reptile a reptile and meet some of our ectothermic friends up close! All About Africa Join our zoo teachers for an exciting trip to Africa through stories, games, crafts, and up-close animal encounters. Learn about giant megafauna found half-way around the world as well as some smaller African species that call Happy Hollow home. Nocturnal Nights Why would an animal want to be awake in the middle of the night? Find out their reasons for strange sleeping patterns, unique adaptations, and how they survive in the deep, dark depths of the night. Jr. Keepers (ages 7-9) Does raking, scooping, feeding, enriching, and caring for zoo animals sound fun and interesting to you? Then join our zoo crew! Learn one or more of these zoo keeping skills and help Happy Hollow’s zookeepers take care of our zoo animals. Jr. Keepers will explore different aspects of zoo keeping throughout the year. Animal Diets Wild animals have specialized diets, and just because they live at the zoo doesn’t mean that changes! Join us to learn what our animals eat and how the zoo makes sure they stay healthy. Prepare some animal meals and feed some of the animals. Animal Enrichment What is enrichment and why is it so important? Answer these questions while learning how the zookeepers make sure the animals stay physically fit and mentally active. You’ll also get to make an enrichment item for one of the zoo animals and watch what they do with it! Animal Training Do zoo animals do tricks? No, but sometimes they are trained to do natural behaviors! Find out what the difference is, how zookeepers train the animals, and why! Zooteen Shadow (ages 10-13) Are you eager to volunteer at the zoo? Our Zooteen Program starts at age 14, but you can get a head start with our new class, Zooteen Shadow! Join our young mentors to learn the very same tasks that the zookeepers taught them! You’ll learn valuable skills in this adult-supervised class. Animal Care Join our Animal Care Zooteens to help give the barnyard animals breakfast, clean the Double H Ranch Barn, make enrichment for the parrots, and even give a Parrot Talk on Parrot Island! Meet & Greet Our Zooteens are important members of the Zoo Crew. Not only do they help care for the animals, but they also provide our zoo guests with the opportunity to meet our live animal ambassadors up close on Critter Corner! Join our Meet & Greet Zooteens to learn about and meet some of our animal ambassadors, talk to the public about why the animals are here and their role in their natural environment, and even learn how to handle one of our program animals! This unique tour will lead you through the zoo and behind the scenes to learn about our early risers and how we start their day off on the right foot, paw, or hoof! Breakfast with the Animals Pancakes, bacon, and eggs might sound good to you and me, but the animals at the zoo have something quite different in mind! Help us serve breakfast to some of our animals while learning all about where and how it’s made! Family Fun (ages 4+ with an adult) These fun family classes are filled with activities for adults and children to do together. Each class includes interactive discussions, hands-on activities, and meeting live animals up close! Class fee is for 1 child and 1 adult. Please respect age restrictions and do not bring younger siblings to class. Each additional participant requires an additional fee. Gifts for the Animals Join us this holiday season to make gifts for the animals! You and your family will learn about the importance of enrichment in zoos and create a holiday-themed enrichment item to give to one of our zoo animals. If you took this class last year, it will be similar, but we will meet and see different animals. Flashlight Safari (ages 4+ with an adult) Have you ever wondered what happens at the zoo after dark? Grab your flashlight and join us on an adventure through the zoo to learn about the nocturnal habits of the animals and even meet live nocturnal animals up close! Class fee is for two participants. Each additional participant is an additional fee. Please respect age restrictions and do not bring younger children to class. Nocturnal Senses Are your senses of sight, smell, hearing and touch good enough to help you get around in the dark? Come visit our nocturnal animals after hours and learn about their extreme senses. Howl-o-ween Family Sleepover (ages 5+ with an adult) Be our overnight guest for a howling good time and enjoy the thrill of the zoo after dark. During your adventure, learn the truth about “scary” animals through Halloween-themed activities, games, live animal encounters, and night tours. Your adventure includes a late-night snack and breakfast the next morning. Bring your own tent and sleeping gear to tent camp in the Crooked House Meadow or sleep indoors in the Learning LODGE Classroom. Indoor sleeping is limited and must be requested by contacting the Education Department. Class fee is for one child and one adult. Each additional participant is an additional fee. School Break Camps at Happy Hollow! (Ages 5-11) Bundle up for a Happy Hollow Adventure this winter! In our camps, you’ll have tons of fun with interactive discussions, hands-on activities, live animal encounters, and more! Children attend camps independently (without parents/guardians). Winter Break Day Camp If you’ve taken our camps before, this year will be a little different! With the holiday in the middle of the week this year, we are offering single day enrollment for our holiday camps. Join us each day for winter-themed educational games, crafts, and activities. As always, we’ll be sure to spend time on zoo tours and meeting live animals. Refund Policy: Refunds must be requested two weeks prior to the date of the first class meeting. Because of administra-tive costs, a $10 fee is retained for each cancelation. Sorry, refunds for cancellations made less than 14 days prior to the start of your child’s class cannot be granted. Classes with insufficient enrollment may be cancelled. In such cases, you will be notified prior to classes and a full refund will be issued.
