Calvin’s Corner:

“Mind the gap!” is a gentle reminder on the London Underground Rail Service to watch your step as you exit the train. This reminder can also be applied to the church. We must be re-minded of growing gaps in society and in the church itself so that we do not carelessly fall. There are many gaps, but in this brief article I will only mention the top four.

The Salvation Gap. Who do you know who does not have a faith knowledge of Christ? Most can only name a few at best. Do you realize that studies in mid-Missouri show that less than 40% of people living in the area believe that Christ is the only means of salvation? The studies are based on a reputable organization, Social Explorer, that has been doing religious and community studies for decades. Even if off by 10%, the figures mean half the people around us are not followers of Christ. While we could debate the exact figures, the truth is people all around us need to know Christ. In order to mind this gap, we must discover who they are and how they can be reached. It will not happen by hoping they will come. It is our task as a church to take the Gospel to them.

The Unchurched Gap. A growing number of folks who were once a part of the church are no longer involved. They list many reasons and excuses for dropping out. I think I’ve heard them all. It is easy to criticize them, but perhaps our best way to navigate this gap is to reach out to them by listening and loving them. I’ve discov-ered a lot of anger in this group. They are not as angry with God as they are with God’s people. Something in the church has disappointed them and confused them. When that is the case, we as the church must admit our mistakes and reach out to those who are disillusioned. Others have faced tragedy and heartache in their life. They are asking, “Why did God allow ….” We cannot answer the “why” question, but we can be a family of believers that ministers to them. Perhaps others in this group never really accepted Christ. It is up to us to reach out to them as well.

The Age Gap. The average age in our churches today continues to rise. The problem is that, as attrition takes many of these beloved saints, they are not being replaced with younger generations. I hear more concern today from church leader on this issue than any other. “How can we reach the younger generations?” they ask. Volumes are being written on this subject, but there is no one-size-fits-all solution. We must employ mission thinking that gets to know and love those we seek to reach. The church cannot have the attitude: “We will love them if they come.” Let us love them so much that we make the time and effort to go to them.

The Leadership Gap. As churches age so do their leaders. The scripture says, “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelist, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, …” (Eph. 4:11-12). Notice that the task of these leaders is not to do all the work of the church but to equip the church. New leaders are needed to lead followers to do the work of the church. We all have a part. God gifts every Christian in different ways. It is up to each of us to use the gifts God has given to His glory. In my experience when the members of a church are faithfully using their gifts and even seeking greater gifts the church will have plenty of leaders. Perhaps this group should be called the Following Gap.

My point is to cry out: “Mind the gap!” We do not have to allow these gaps to discourage us. We must be faithfully obedient to our Lord, and remember that no matter the obstacle, “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Rom. 8:37).

Summer is here-another season of rain, hot weather, vacations and mosquitoes. I have been reading the 3rd chapter of Ecclesiastes over and over trying to understand the times and seasons of my life: "There is a time for birth and death" v.2; “There is a time for crying and laughing, v.4; “There is also time for love, v.8.

In the last two months we have experienced many of the emotions of the writer of Ecclesiastes in our own home. Carolyn, Carrie and Julia traveled to Jacksonville, Florida to prepare to move Carolyn’s mother to Jefferson City. Later, Bro, Calvin Brown and I traveled to Florida to bring her personal items. Finally, she moved, but soon fell ill and spent time in the hospital. On May 3 she went home to be with her Lord and Savior. She will be buried in the Bakersfield Baptist Church Cemetery next month.

On June 1st Carolyn and I will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. Our children will be hosting a "Vargas-Pavey" family celebration and thanksgiving at Windermere Baptist Retreat May 25-28.I know the best thing we can do is to enjoy life-a blessing of God.

Carolyn and I would like to say, “Thank you” to those who took the time to celebrate the life of Grandma Pavey, and to Enon Baptist Church for hosting that celebration. “Thank you” to all who called and sent notes of sympathy. May Our Lord bless.

About 16 students gathered at my house to enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs and a professional basketball game. As I recalled all those who were there, I was amazed & very pleased to see them as fruit of God's faithfulness to this ministry in our midst!

One guy was there whom I mentored over the course of about 3 years and subsequently had the joy of baptizing. He will be getting married soon.

An ex-football player came who accepted Christ at one of our Tuesday night Bible studies last year. He will help me start a Bible study this summer.

Two ex-football players were there who have faithfully attended our Wednesday afternoon Bible study all last semester. One of them has mentioned feeling a possible call to Christian ministry.

One guy brought his two-year-old son. Another guy was there who accepted Christ during a video at one of our annual goat roasts. A guy came who has attended our Bible studies for at least 4 years. He has accepted a call to be a summer missionary with

Campus Crusade for Christ now known as CRU. Three girls were there who have attended both our Bible studies and Soma Church on Sundays. One of them is also going to be

a summer missionary for CRU.

This was a great time of Christian love, fellowship and good clean fun, even if our team did not win. I never knew they could laugh so long and so hard!

I am rounding up students I know who will be coming back for summer school, so please pray for us as we continue to spread the gospel on campus!

Youth Camp like none other! Our mission is to share the love of Jesus Christ through local missions. We spend one week each summer painting houses, clearing brush, mowing yards and many other miscellaneous projects for people who either cannot afford it or are unable to do it themselves. We want our focus to be loving God and loving people.
