This summer, “Branching Out!” the gardening program for children held at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum will celebrate its 40th birthday. To celebrate the close of the gardening season, gardeners, “Branching Out!” supporters, and alumni will join the staff of the Morris County Park Commission and The Friends of the Frelinghuysen for a good old fashioned birthday party. What began with a proposal from The Garden Club of Morristown to the Morris County Park Commission for a small piece of land on which to teach teenagers about gardening has devel- oped over the decades into one of our premier youth horticulture programs. Each year, more than 75 young people from 5 to 13 years old garden in their own plots, getting dirty, examining nature, and as a result, they discover the joys of eating fresh produce right off the vine. “Branching Out!” coordinator Gwen Montgomery says this about the program, “With concerns on the rise about childhood obesity rates, children not spending enough time outside, or being unaware of where and how food gets on their plates, “Branching Out!” is very much of the moment, yet many of its components have hardly changed in 40 years.” She notes that every year the program has a waiting list and she has also discovered that some of her current gardeners are the children of “Branching Out!” alumni. All three of Moira Clarkin’s children are or have been “Branching Out!” gardeners. She sums it up best by saying, “Branching Out! continues to be our favorite Spring and Summer program. It is a tradition at our house! From planting on that first cold April Saturday to the End of Season party on a steamy August evening, we enjoy each moment, rain or shine, and all of the bounty that hard work yields!” For forty gardening seasons “Branching Out!” has taken thousands of young people outside and into the garden where they have planted, harvested, had fun and learned to be future environmental stewards. Learn the history of the program through 40 years of photos and see what’s evolved and what remains unchanged.

What began with a proposal from The Garden Club of Morristown to the Morris County Park Commission for a small piece of land on which to teach teenagers about gardening has devel-oped over the decades into one of our premier youth horticulture programs.

From planting on that first cold April Saturday to the End of Season party on a steamy August evening, we enjoy each moment, rain or shine, and all of the bounty that hard work yields!”

For forty gardening seasons “Branching Out!” has taken thousands of young people outside and into the garden where they have planted, harvested, had fun and learned to be future environmental stewards. Learn the history of the program through 40 years of photos and see what’s evolved and what remains unchanged. Then, grab a piece of cake and some ice cream, and join in some games for all ages – all part of the fun at this family event which will kick off the fifth decade of youth gardening programs at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum.

Arbor Day AwardsOn April 9, the annual Arbor Day awards were given and trees planted in the honor of three outstanding “Friends”. Their contributions and dedication to our organization have been exemplary, to say the least. This year’s recipients were Beverly Highfield, Jeannette Doman and Kate Gutierrez.

Beverly Highfield came to her role as Trea-surer of The Friends of The Frelinghuysen

Arboretum at the dawn of the Friends’ digital age. Payment for Friends’ programs had just begun its transition to an online presence and other changes in accounting and tracking expenses were needed to keep up with the organization’s rapid growth. Bev has engaged the IRS, vari-ous banks, insurance agents, vendors and numerous other entities, all in the administration of the Friend’s budget and fiscal integrity. Bev did not shy away from these new duties and she has faced each challenge squarely and resolved it in her forthright and earnest way. It is impos-sible to imagine how the Friends could have managed to navigate these requirements successfully without her.

On March 23, 1997 Jeannette Doman was visiting The Frelinghuysen Arboretum and decided to fill out a Garden Works Program application. The rest is history, as Jeannette has been with us in the gardens, as a park patron and as an invaluable member of our volunteer team ever since. She has assisted The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum with mailings, helped to set-up and break-down Gingerbread Wonder-land, was a visitor counter, worked at the volunteer table and promoted memberships. At the Plant Sale, Jeannette has been donations chair, set-up shelving, assisted in the offloading of plant trucks, participated in the pick-up of plant material, labeled, priced, groomed and watered plants. She helped to clear the area that is now tended as The Cutting Garden and is involved with the holiday decorating outside and around the Education Center.

Kate Gutierrez began her career here first as a summer intern in 1995, then hired as Horticultural Volunteer Program Specialist, where she created a program called Garden Works, which greatly enhances the gardens of the Morris County Park Commission. Kate’s program has brought together hundreds of individuals who have logged tens of thousands of hours over the years at the Park system’s three horticultural sites, helping the gardening staff maintain these beautiful grounds we all care about so much. Kate is also the person responsible for recruiting summer interns, which is an essential part of staffing the Horticultural Department for the gardening season and for managing and coordinating Index Seminum, a worldwide seed exchange among horticultural institutions, that puts our gardens on an international platform.

Congratulations Bev, Jeannette and Kate and thank-you from all your ‘Friends’! On June 10th, at the Annual Meeting, we also present the Annual Award to a deserving person who has supported the Arboretum and its mission. If you are a member, join us for this presentation followed by a program by Ken Druse, noted author, landscape designer and gardener.

Shakespeare Garden at Vassar College The second oldest Shakespeare garden in the country first opened in 1916 with plants from seeds sent directly from Shakespeare’s own gardens in Stratford- on-Avon, England. After several renovations, the garden includes raised beds with plants mentioned by Shakespeare, plants grown in 17th-century England, and beds of medicinal and culinary herbs tagged with Shakespeare’s poetry. A docent will lead a one-hour guided tour of the garden.

Lunch in Rhinebeck, New York Lunch in Rhinebeck is not to be missed! From the corner of Market and Montgomery Streets, there are bistros, historic taverns, a Mediterranean trattoria, regional-sustainable restaurants, pastry shops and pizza parlors all within two blocks. They represent a variety of cuisines and prices for you to choose from.

Blithewood Garden at Bard CollegeBlithewood Garden is a formal Italianate walled garden on the banks of the Hudson River. Created in 1830 by Andrew Jackson Downing, renowned landscape architect, the garden has since undergone several owners and renovations. Located on the western side of the Beaux-Arts Levy Institute, the garden offers magnificent views of the Hudson and Catskill Mountains. Enjoy a 1-hour tour with head gardener Bessina Harrar or wander on your own.

The Friends and DIG IT! Magazine are teaming up again to bring you another exceptional garden tour. Leave the driving to us as you enjoy going “Back to School” for a day of gardens, history, literature and, yes, college! The itinerary includes two legendary colleges with historic gardens and lunch in beautiful Rhinebeck, New York.

The Emerald Isle by Lesley Parness – [email protected]

This summer, when the dog days of August are upon us, and you are looking out onto a parched landscape, think of Ireland and its forty shades of green. One of the most fertile places on Earth, Ireland’s mild climate and long growing season, coupled with its fertile soil and ample amounts of precipitation, create an ideal growing environment.

Some of the loveliest settings in Ireland revolve around its gardens and in May, 2013, The Friends will be following up their successful trip to Scotland with a fabulous trip to the Emerald Isle. We will visit public and private gardens of all manner. To give you a sample of the gardens we are considering including on the trip, here are some websites to peruse:

Estate gardens include: www.powerscourt.ie/gardens www.mountushergardens.ie www.huntingtoncastle.com www.innacullen.com www.bantryhouse.com www.lisselan.com www.muckrosshouse.ie

There will also be visits to private gardens, including one belonging to Helen Dillon: www.dillongarden.com

And of course, to some of Ireland’s great public gardens: www.botanicgardens.ie

At all of these we can count on receiving the Cead Mile Failte (100,000 welcomes) that Ireland is famous for, in a rich historic context, complimented by great food, shopping, and a variety of recreational opportunities.

What began with a proposal from The Garden Club of Morristown to the Morris County Park Commission for a small piece of land on which to teach teenagers about gardening has devel-oped over the decades into one of our premier youth horticulture programs.
