AUGUST 2015 Bring People to Jesus to know Him and make Him known Hi there! Wasn’t the Devotion great today?! HAPPY AUGUST 2015! I really hope your summer is going extra great! Thanks for all you do to help us focus all our resolve and resources on “Bringing People to Jesus to Know Him and Make Him Known!” through all our people, programs and property! Thanks for helping us push aside every “lesser thing” so we can bring the full-force of Indian River City to his GREATER THING! SSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOO...am I the only one who thinks we might be living in times of great change?! Of course...I guess every generation thinks that! The other day I was listening to the 60’s Station on my Satel- lite Radio and heard Bob Dylan singing ”The Times, They Are A Changing!” It seems that new and different is happening every day! Why can’t it all stay the way it’s always been?! Whenever I start to wonder “What are you doing God?!” I go as quickly as I can to things I know for sure: 1) God is always God and he always has a plan and is always working that plan for his glory and our good AAAAAANNNNNDDDD…2) I desperate- ly want to be a part of his change and I can’t see his hand without his help! I learned a long time ago that his ways and thoughts are always BIGGER and BETTER than mine ever are! Believing that God is managing all the change helps you & me see and serve his purpose in it! These are some of those “I believe you God! Help my unbelief!” moments! There’s a whole a lot of things we can’t change BBBBBBUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTT...with God’s help, we can change the most important thing...“ME!” That, after all, is the BIGGEST thing God wants to change! We can’t get in the “Wayback Machine” and change our past, our parents, the gifts and talents God has or hasn’t given us or any handicap we’ve been given! God uses every one of these to S.H.A.P.E. us into the people he uses to change the world! What needs to change in the “ME!” that’s in you and me?! GREAT QUESTION! Thanks for asking! Maybe it’s time to take a look! One of my Bible heroes is Jeremiah! When his times were going through BIG changes, he looked first at himself, “Let us examine our ways and turn back to the Lord!” (Lamentations 3:40) What’s keeping us from being in sync with what God is thinking and doing and our being an integral part in his pro- cess of change? HMMM...lots and lots of things to ponder! To align our way with God’s way takes some real gut-level self-evaluation! We need to do an inventory of every area of our lives! We need to look at our relationships with God and all the people with whom we are connected! We need to look at all our hurts, habits, and hang-ups that may be bringing us down! Nothing can be off-limits from that kind-of hard look! It’s not easy and it can get messy! God is focused on changing the world and that change starts with “ME!” Without that we can’t take our place and do our part! And in God’s plan, process and purpose...that means everything! For us to become more like Jesus we must “resolve to know nothing except Jesus Christ while we’re here!” (1 Corinthians 2:2) Let’s continue to focus ourselves on that one thing! We can more easily identify all the “lesser things” that are stealing our time, talent and treasure from God’s GREATER THINGS! Let’s give all we are and all we have to “Bring People to Jesus to Know Him and Make Him Known!” Now that’s...RADICAL! Bill

Bring People to Jesus

to know Him and make Him known

Hi there! Wasn’t the Devotion great today?! HAPPY AUGUST 2015! I really hope your summer is going extra

great! Thanks for all you do to help us focus all our resolve and resources on “Bringing People to Jesus to

Know Him and Make Him Known!” through all our people, programs and property! Thanks for helping us

push aside every “lesser thing” so we can bring the full-force of Indian River City to his GREATER THING!

SSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOO...am I the only one who thinks we might be living in times of great change?!

Of course...I guess every generation thinks that! The other day I was listening to the 60’s Station on my Satel-

lite Radio and heard Bob Dylan singing ”The Times, They Are A Changing!” It seems that new and different is

happening every day! Why can’t it all stay the way it’s always been?! Whenever I start to wonder “What

are you doing God?!” I go as quickly as I can to things I know for sure: 1) God is always God and he always

has a plan and is always working that plan for his glory and our good AAAAAANNNNNDDDD…2) I desperate-

ly want to be a part of his change and I can’t see his hand without his help! I learned a long time ago that

his ways and thoughts are always BIGGER and BETTER than mine ever are!

Believing that God is managing all the change helps you & me see and serve his purpose in it! These are

some of those “I believe you God! Help my unbelief!” moments! There’s a whole a lot of things we can’t

change BBBBBBUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTT...with God’s help, we can change the most important thing...“ME!” That,

after all, is the BIGGEST thing God wants to change! We can’t get in the “Wayback Machine” and change

our past, our parents, the gifts and talents God has or hasn’t given us or any handicap we’ve been given!

God uses every one of these to S.H.A.P.E. us into the people he uses to change the world!

What needs to change in the “ME!” that’s in you and me?! GREAT QUESTION! Thanks for asking! Maybe it’s

time to take a look! One of my Bible heroes is Jeremiah! When his times were going through BIG changes,

he looked first at himself, “Let us examine our ways and turn back to the Lord!” (Lamentations 3:40) What’s

keeping us from being in sync with what God is thinking and doing and our being an integral part in his pro-

cess of change? HMMM...lots and lots of things to ponder!

To align our way with God’s way takes some real gut-level self-evaluation! We need to do an inventory of

every area of our lives! We need to look at our relationships with God and all the people with whom we are

connected! We need to look at all our hurts, habits, and hang-ups that may be bringing us down! Nothing

can be off-limits from that kind-of hard look! It’s not easy and it can get messy! God is focused on changing

the world and that change starts with “ME!” Without that we can’t take our place and do our part!

And in God’s plan, process and purpose...that means everything!

For us to become more like Jesus we must “resolve to know nothing except Jesus Christ while we’re here!”

(1 Corinthians 2:2) Let’s continue to focus ourselves on that one thing! We can more easily identify all the

“lesser things” that are stealing our time, talent and treasure from God’s GREATER THINGS! Let’s give all

we are and all we have to “Bring People to Jesus to Know Him and Make Him Known!”

Now that’s...RADICAL!

Imperial Estates Elementary School Good News Club

The Good News Club is starting on the campus of Imperial Estates Ele-mentary for after school activities in Fall 2015. The principal is very excit-ed to have the Good News Club at her school, but volunteers are need-ed: Bible Teacher, Music Teacher, Memory Teacher, and helpers. 10 trained volunteers would be enough to start the club. Carol Charvet has volunteered to be the Administrator for the club. Indian River City UMC would like to sponsor this school club if we can get the volunteers from our congregation to serve. To make this a reality, we need 10 committed volunteers. Then a training can be scheduled in September and the club would start on October, Tuesday, 6. If we can’t get enough volunteers for October, the club will delay start until early January. For more information contact Cindy Manire, at [email protected] or 321-385-1130.

After the death of her grand-mother, Juliette discovers an antique photograph of a man who looks strikingly like her brother. As the truth behind the picture reveals romance and dark secrets, Juliette struggles to keep the mystery away from her nosy family until she can uncover the whole story.

Hearts Made Whole Book #2 in the Beacons of Hope Series by Jody Hedlund. After her father's death, Caroline Taylor has grown confident running the Windmill Point Lighthouse. For those who enjoyed the July Book Chat selection The Mailbox by Marybeth Whalen we have her Sunset Beach series consisting of the following three books: The Guest Book (Bk. #1) - During her childhood, Macy Dillon and boy she never met exchanged pictures through a beach house guestbook until tragedy ended her yearly visits. ALPHA Friends

In January of 2015, Indian River City UMC held an Alpha course. It was an awesome experi-ence for those who attended, and they seemed to blend into each other’s lives as new friends. When the graduation celebration took place, it was fitting that the last subject to be discussed was remaining together as a group. So, the members of the last Alpha course decided to stay together and created a small group for spiritual learning and fellowship and called themselves “Alpha Friends”. Our group gathers each Wednesday evening from 6:30-8:00 PM to study the scriptures and enjoy Christian fellowship. There are about 14 members in the group and our gatherings are amazing to say the least! Everyone joins in on the leadership of the group. Open discussion and conversation are encouraged. We join in prayer and lift up our family and friends to the Lord who are in need of His grace and healing. The Lord’s Blessings to you from the Alpha Friends. For information on other small groups and Bible Studies at the church contact Dawn Schissler, Adult Leader, at 321-267-7922 x20 or email at [email protected].

UMC Annual Conference Corner From Blaine Bryan

The Florida Annual Conference was June 10-13 in Daytona Beach, Florida at Bethu-ne - Cookman University. Blaine Bryan attended as the Congregational Delegate and Annie Woods as the District Delegate. The following information is from the Lay Member Summary provided at the end of the Conference. “Next Generations: Together in the Baptismal Waters” was the theme of the 2015 Florida Annual Confer-ence. About 1,900 Florida United Methodists, including 1,546 clergy and lay voting members, attended. Highlights included: A diverse delegation was elected to represent the Florida Conference in 2016 at General Conference

and the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference. The General Conference delegation includes five young adults including Molly McEntire, lay delegate leader. The clergy delegation leader is Rev. Sue Haupert-Johnson, superintendent of the North Central District. Rachael Sumner from 1st UMC in Ti-tusville was one of those elected to be a Delegate to the General Conference.

The Florida campaign for reducing malaria deaths through the United Methodist effort “Imagine No Ma-laria” was the focus of prayers and fund-raisers during the conference. So far about 46,000 lives have been saved. The goal is 250,000 lives by the end of the year.

Conference is focused on reducing seminary education debt for clergy. In a new program, “Passing the Torch,” the Florida Conference Board of Pension and Health Benefits has committed to provide $60,000 in debt-reduction grants to clergy each year, and the Florida United Methodist Foundation agreed to match that amount for at least five years, along with other substantial investments in financial and stewardship training and renewal grants for Florida Conference clergy and a $40,000 scholarship to a seminary student of color. Clergy supporters at the Friday ordination service gave about $5,440 for “Passing the Torch.” Our former Pastor, Dan Johnson, spoke on how local churches could contribute to the Debt Reduction Fund.

AUGUST 2015 INDIAN RIVER CITY UMC NEWS

Thank You Pat Atwell A big THANK YOU to Pat Atwell for her service as Treasurer. Pat has resigned after 28 years to spend more time with her family. In her early years as Treasurer, she wrote the checks out by hand. Through the many changes over the years, Pat re-mained a faithful participant in the finance ministry of the church. We will miss seeing her cheery personality and smiling face on a regular basis in the office. Pat is a wonderful role model of how stewardship is more than just financial resources. We pledge our prayers, our presence, our gifts and our service as church members. We use our spiritual gifts and time to further the ministries of Indian River City UMC. This is not to say that our financial resources are not needed, but that the other, non-financial, resources are just as important in God’s service. Where is God calling you in stewardship? How can God use your talents and time? It could be some-thing as simple as turning out a light when you leave a room….volunteering in one of our many outreach events…or even filling a leadership role. Pray for your opportunity. Soon we will be looking towards 2016 and where God will lead our congregation next year. There will be many opportunities for all forms of stewardship! Thank you Pat for being such a cheerful example for us! Laurie
