With the arrival of another June comes another Penn Club Anniversary! Our Clubhouse opened its doors on June 16, 1994. After eighteen years of operations, the Penn Club has become a fixture on 44th Street, as well as in the world of private social clubs. Throughout our lifespan, we have provided services and social opportunities to discerning members of the entire University of Pennsylvania community. Our fine Clubhouse, with its comfortable rooms, outstanding food and beverage operations, diverse program offerings and state-of-the-art fitness center is recognized around the world as a model of accommodating excellence. Among out accolades are our distinction as a Platinum Club of America and our designation as a New York City Landmark. This is due to the vision of the University of Pennsylvania, the enthusiasm and dedication of our membership, the spirit and integrity of our devoted staff, and the supportive encouragement of our Boards and Committees. As members of a world class Club, you have much to be proud of.

Over the years, our membership has stabilized. As a result, the Penn Club has remained strong during the challenges of the lingering financial issues. While this is truly a good thing, we cannot just rest on our laurels. A Club as young as ours must be devoted to the ongoing growth and development of its membership. We have a well focused dedicated Membership Committee, as well as a bright and hard-working professional Membership Marketing Department. It is thanks to their efforts that the Penn Cub membership numbers are as strong as they are. At the

same time, it must always be kept in mind that the growth and stability of any club membership is the primary re-sponsibility of the existing membership. We count on you to introduce new members to the Penn Club as often as you are able to. You are the ones who recognize the great potential members in your circle of friends and associates, and you are the ones who can bring them to our doors. Once inside, you know they will not be disappointed.

One category of membership that sometimes gets over-looked is our Associate Membership. This category is made up of individuals who did not go to the University of Penn-sylvania. Instead, they are friends and acquaintances of our current Penn members who are deemed to be a good fit with our membership community. They are introduced and sponsored for membership by you, and they represent a small but vital portion of our membership. Their quality and integrity serve to enhance the overall ambiance of our membership, and their usage of our facilities gives even greater strength to our overall operations. Please contact our Membership Marketing Department to learn more about this very important segment of our membership opportunities.

My staff and I continue to be excited to be a part of your Penn Club life. Its status as a Platinum Club of America is a source of great pride to us all. Your comfort, safety and enjoyment are of top importance to us. We are eager to wel-come you often to your home-away-from-home in New York.

The Private Oasis: landscape Architecture and Gardens |

Tuesday, June 5th, 7:00 p.m. Whether a home is a great place to live often depends on what lies beyond its walls. The landscape — when it has a well thought out shape and characters — gives a home much of its character and satisfaction. In The Private Oasis, two of New York’s leading landscape architects, Edmund Hollander and Maryanne Connelly, guide readers through a series of remarkable landscapes and gardens, ex-

plaining how to apply their techniques, no matter what the size of the property. Their experience covers a wide range of scales, including estates and gardens across the East Coast. After receiving his undergraduate degree at Vassar College, Ed Hollander studied Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the President of Edmund Hollander Design, a firm with offices in NYC and Sag Harbor. He has taught at the Graduate School of the Fine Arts at Penn. Maryanne Connelly graduated with a Masters degree in Landscape Architecture from Penn. She has taught at the Pratt Institute and the New York Botanical Gardens.$35 per member and $50 per guest plus tax and service charge by Tuesday, May 29th. $45 per member and $60 per guest for late reservations. The Face-to-Face Book: A Guide to real World social Marketing |

Tuesday, June 26th, 7:00 p.m. Social media is hot and getting hotter. Companies are scrambling to embrace Facebook, Twitter, and other online social networking sites. But the facts suggest the opportunity to engage in social marketing is far bigger — and many are blinded to this larger op-portunity by the shiny allure of today’s newest tools and technologies. Human beings are hardwired to share, and what they are motivated to share in the

real world is different from what they do online. The overwhelming amount of word-of-mouth still takes place offline, a fact that is often overlooked. In his forthcoming book, The Face-to-Face Book, Ed Keller (C ’77, ASC ’79) and co-author Brad Fay share concrete strategies and case studies for how companies, both large and small, can create “total social” brands, tapping all the levers that unleash conversations to drive your business success. Come here Ed talk about his book, and about how word-of-mouth works in the real world.$15 per member and $25 per guest by Tuesday, June 19th. $25 per member and $35 per guest for late reservations. european Football championship in the Grill room |

June 8th – July 1st. Who will you root for? The UEFA Euro-pean Football Championship is an international competition staged every four years to determine the top national team on the continent. It is considered the second biggest internation-al tournament in the sport (after the World Cup). The com-petition consists of a qualifying phase with all eligible nations

drawn into groups, followed by playoffs and a final tournament consisting of 16 surviving nations. Germany has won "the Euros" three times — the most by any country — while France and Spain (the defending champion) have claimed the title two times each. Stop by the Grill Room between June 8th and July 1st to see which European nation will claim victory.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Peter D. byeff, mDPeter D. Byeff, MDPenn Club Member Since: 2006Lives in: Southington, Connecticut Currently Single/Married with Kids? In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job? I treat patients with blood disorders and cancer, and I direct the George Bray Cancer Center of the Hospital of Central Connecticut.Where do you like to vacation? At our home on Lake Winnipesaukee and around Europe. What do you often do at the Penn Club? My wife and I stay at the Penn Club very frequently when we are in New York. We like to go to the opera, a Broadway show, or visit our children. We have enjoyed many dinners at the clubhouse, including a number of theater evenings and holidays, such as Mother’s Day brunch. We’ve also had receptions for our sons’ graduations at the Club. Favorite part of Penn Club history: I was struck by the mural in the Grill Room depicting the 1982 victory over Harvard that gave Penn its second Ivy League football title. My wife and I were at that game, and I wonder how many members of the Penn Club know what game it depicts.

What is your dish of choice? Maryland crab, from my days at Hopkins. What’s your drink? Martini Why did you choose to attend Penn (if Penn alum)? I fell in love with Penn at an early age. My uncle, Martin Wolfe, was a Professor of Economic History at Penn, and I was exposed to the campus many times during my childhood. I am old enough that I still cringe when I hear it referred to as UPenn. Were you named after anyone? No.If you were a crayon, what color would you be? GT silver. What book are you currently reading?
