Foreign Bodies | by Cynthia Ozick

Monday, June 20th, 12 noon. Ozick’s sixth novel is a dramatic inquiry into the malignance of betrayal; exile literal and emotional; the many tentacles of anti-Semitism; and the balm and aberrance of artistic obsession is brilliantly nuanced and profoundly disquieting. Foreign Bodies is a somber tale of the convergence

of displaced persons in post-WWII Paris and New York.$49 plus tax and service charge per member and $54 plus tax and service charge per guest by June 13th at noon. $54 plus tax and service charge per member and $59 plus tax and service charge per guest for late reservations. There is an attendance minimum for this program to take place; early RSVPs are encouraged. No walk-ins. This program includes book discussion and full buffet luncheon with coffee/tea and dessert.

G E N E R A L M A N A G E R ’ SCorner

In an earlier edition of HapPENNings, I discussed our April Spin-a-Thon, benefitting Penn’s Abramson Cancer Center LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center of Excellence, and ex-plained why I am personally committed to its success. The Spin-a-Thon succeeded to a level well beyond my expecta-tions. This is a true testament to the generosity and vision of our membership, and I am profoundly grateful for your support. I have received some very positive feedback from many of our members, as well as several notes of thanks from the Center. Much of the success of our Spin-a-Thon is due to our partnership with Plus One Fitness, the management company that oversees our Palestra Fitness Center, and I would like to personally thank Danny Ahearn and his Plus One team for their assistance and direction. The Spin-a-Thon will become an annual event.

I had recently mentioned that the Penn Club of New York will be celebrating its seventeenth anniversary. The arrival of another Penn Club anniversary also signifies an arrival of a different type. I am referring to the arrival of the Class of 2011, some of our newest members. This group joins other recent graduates in representing the future of Penn’s vision in New York. I hope you will join me in welcoming

them into our ranks. Their involvement with the Club brings us another burst of energy and innovation as we continue to tailor our variety of programs and events to match the diversity of our membership. I’d like to encour-age our newest members to become involved in the plan-ning of our Club calendar so that the strength found in our core vision will continue to grow with our Club.

With summer fast approaching, many of you will be leav-ing us to go on vacation. I wish you safe and enjoyable travels. If you should find yourself using any of our recip-rocal clubs during your travels, I do hope you will take a moment to provide me with some feedback about your experiences. Your input will help the House Committee in maintaining a reciprocal club list that best serves the needs of our members.

My staff and I are excited to be a part of your life at the Penn Club. Its status as a Platinum Club of America is a source of great pride to all of us. We are eager to welcome you often to your home-away-from-home in New York.

Welcome New April Members

Spin-a-Thon UpdateTo benefit PENN’s Abramson Cancer Center, a LIVESTRONG Survi-vorship Center of Excellence, The Penn Club held a fundraiser beginning

with a spin-a-thon and pre-sentation on April 13th. We reached the goal of having at least 1 spin bike going through the enter 12 hour period from 7:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m. and had quite a few other riders joining in to get several bikes going simultaneously.

A silent auction for 4 signed cycling jerseys signed by Lance Armstrong ran concurrently and bidding ended on April 29th. The highest bid for a jersey was $1000!

• The combined total raised was $6560!

• The spin-a-thon raised $3410.

• The silent auction of the four Lance Armstrong autographed cycling jerseys raised an additional $3150.

If you did not get a chance to participate in this fundraiser, it is not too late to donate online — your donations are tax-deductible. (The tax ID for PENN is 23-1352685)Please visit the link below to donate:

Washington, offers two great facilities: one in the heart of downtown and the other in the Valley. The property combines the intimate feel and per-sonal attention of a boutique hotel with many of the high end amenities of a grand hotel—fine dining, superior service and first-class athletic facili-ties. Court sports, swimming, strength training and yoga, triathlon train-ing and basketball clinics are all here at the Club. And with 6 indoor courts and 4 outdoor courts, the Valley offers simply the best tennis in town. When you feel like leaving the club grounds, you can hike and bike to your heart’s delight, tee up on fabulous golf courses, or enjoy one of 76 glistening lakes. When the sun sets and it’s time to take a load off, sip on some wine or bubbly from the region’s local wineries. For Guest Room Reservations, please call 509.838.8511.

the Reform clublondon, england

The Reform Club in Pall Mall is one of the finest Victorian buildings in England, a palatial masterpiece by Sir Charles Barry that has remained largely unchanged since it was completed in 1841. Back then, membership was restricted to those who pledged support for the Great Reform Act of 1832, and the many peers among the early members devel-

oped the Club as the political headquarters of the Liberal Party. The Reform Club is no longer associated with any particular political party, and now serves a purely social function.  Inside the clubhouse, guests benefit from an extensive library, fine dining and an excellent wine cellar.  There is also a Billiards Room and a Card Room. The Club will forever be associated with Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days, as the place where the idea of this incredible journey was conceived and the famous bet made. For Guest Room Reservations, please call 020 7747 4603 or e-mail [email protected].

For a Letter of Introduction to any of our reciprocal clubs, please contact Barbara Nevels at 212.403.6620 or e-mail [email protected].

He frequents the Penn Club because of its “location, location, location,” which is less than one away block from his office. In addition to being a charter member of the Penn Club, he is one of the founding part-ners of Miller & Melloment, CPAS. When he has free time, he likes to travel and enjoys discussing politics and religion. If you see him in the Grill Room or Library, don’t hesitate to spark up a conversation with him over something equally controversial. Now that he’s

finished working seventy consecutive days, he hopes to relax and plans to return his focus to breeding and racing thoroughbreds. When you see him around the Club, ask him whom to pick to win the Belmont Stakes this year!
