One of the undoubted stars will be the lovely 42.08 m Hanuman, a modern recreation by the Dykstra team of Tommy Sopwith’s awe- some Super-J Endeavour II.

Launched in 2009 by Royal Huisman, Hanuman is a faithful homage to the original in terms of her styling, looks and phenomenal flushdeck. Visual highlights include her teak-clad deckhouse, gleaming black hull with recessed gold cove stripe and an incredible hand-polished period interior. We have fully optimised her perfor- mance potential, and the owner’s desire that Hanuman would utilise all the advantages of design and engineering allowed within the J-Class rules.

The J-Class revival doesn’t stop there. Holland Jachtbouw is now building another of our designs: The 39.95 m Rainbow is based upon the J that won the America’s Cup against Endeavour in 1934. Meeting the most demanding performance criteria within a luxury yacht setting, she will combine a lightweight construction with a high degree of overall stiffness, high-modulus carbon spars, carbon rigging, 3DL sails and hydraulic winches. Outfitting will soon get underway on the sailing yacht Mikhail S. Vorontsov, a 65 m, three-mast schooner being built by Dream Ship Victory Ltd in partnership with Balk Shipyard in the Nether- lands. Our involvement in this project is the development on an existing 53 m hull built in 2005. The yacht is designed for luxurious and comfortable sailing with unrestricted naviga- tion, and will be finished to the highest superyacht standard. Her unique superstruc- ture and deck joinery layout will generate an extraordinary atmosphere, and Dykstra & Partners are also responsible for the deck plan, sail plan and exterior styling. Ken Freivokh has designed the interior for Mikhail S. Vorontsov.

endeavour With lots of J Class events on the agenda, Endea- vour is undergoing an extensive refit in order to rejoin the racing field. Dykstra renewed the construction plans, sail plan and deck layout on this project that is being carried out by Yacht-ing Developments in Auckland. The refit will include a new deck structure, new rig and sails, a new deck layout, an engine room upgrade and a new crew interior. Jon Barrett, who over-saw the yacht’s first refit as captain at Royal Huisman in 1989 (which, incidentally, was also Gerard Dijkstra’s first major refit), is project manager for this prestigious project that will result in a ‘ready for battle’. Endeavour being relaunched in the summer of 2011.

Panamax is nearing completion at Baltic Yachts and no effort is being spared to optimise this yacht for her spectacular first sail trials in spring 2011. Although she is yet to even touch water, this 60 m ketch has been a great inspiration both for us and our clients.

Following on from the Spirit of Tradition ketch and Bugamena, we are working on a new plumb bowed 42 m sloop. More information about this yacht in design can be found on our website. And while you’re there look out for Annagine, an 34 m classic sloop that will soon be touring the inter-national regatta scene.

These are very busy times for the Bestevaer and Bestewind series of cruising yachts, with three new Bestewind 50s and four new Bestevaers in the range of 45 to 55 ft being built by K&M Yacht builders. Two 60 ft Pilot Cutter sloops from the same range are also under construction in Turkey. 42 m sloop in design

expedition ketchlong tall sally A sturdy no-nonsense performance yacht de-signed to withstand any challenges that high latitude sailing may throw at her, the Long Tall Sally project is based on the well known Bestevaer series. This 110 ft aluminium ketch will explore destinations well off the beaten track. Below decks, a fully outfitted modern interior will ensure a comfortable stay onboard. The yacht will be the first in a fleet of identical yachts, to be operated under a co-ownership pro-gramme welcoming owners with a passion for adventure sailing. The first yacht is expected to launch in early 2012. See www.longtallsally.org for more information.

beautiful bugamenaBugamena means ‘look at how beautiful I am’ in Zulu, and there can surely not be a more appropriate name for this classic sloop-rigged yacht. An elegant 37.30 m. sailing yacht that has been designed and optimised for global cruising, Bugamena‘s project team of Royal Huisman, Rhoades Young, Jens Cornelsen and Dykstra & Partners is finalising the detailed design for construction. The yacht is planned to launch in 2012.

spirit of tradition ketchThis 55 m classic beauty is under construction at Royal Huisman, as we again partner with this leading yard, interior specialists Rhoades Young, and project manager Jens Cornelsen in a team that has successfully completed several major projects and designs together. Slated for launch in 2011, this Spirit of Tradition cruising ketch embodies the feeling of the Bristol Pilot Cutters in the old days, backed up by the class and elegance required to create the ultimate sailing experience.

rainbow warrior iiiThe new Greenpeace flagship is under construc-tion and will be launched in 2011. Designed by Dykstra & Partners as a green vessel, the environ- mental impact of Rainbow Warrior III will be low. She will be a motor sailor combining wind energy with diesel electric propulsion. Rainbow Warrior III‘s rig is designed to keep maintenance to a low level, ensuring the ship has more time available to carry out Greenpeace missions.

north atlantic – may 2009 By Alexis Howard, Skipper, Windrose of Amsterdam

While many readers will have considerable Trans Atlantic and ocean sailing experience, others among you may still be dreaming of your first crossing. Windrose of Amsterdam has completed many such voyages, and as her current captain Alexis Howard writes she continues to perform superbly.

In May 2009 I skippered Windrose for the third time across the Atlantic as we headed from Anti-gua to the Mediterranean. We departed Antigua in light NE conditions so spent the first two or three days motoring until we hooked on to a fore-cast low coming off the USA. The wind built steadily over the next couple of days and we held a port tack from SSE off Bermuda in a large arc until we

were heading pretty much due east to the Azores and had gibed on to starboard tack.

We had planned to go no further north than the Azores but as the wind built it ‘pulled’ us higher than we had intended. Sometime before, in Antigua, Gerry Dykstra had told me what a very strong boat Windrose is and seeing that she holds the WSSRC Schooner/Spirit of Tradition record for a Trans Atlantic crossing, I thought this seemed the ideal time to check out her handling in heavier conditions.

The wind built steadily up to 25, 30 and 35 knots, before finally topping out at 45 knots. Broad reach ing all the time on a sea that was getting ever larg-

er, was an exhilarating experience and Windrose handled everything thrown at her quite magnifi-cently. The boat speed also steadily increased – 16, 17, 18 finally hitting 21 knots on my watch and with me at the wheel. It may not be the fastest but some 152 feet of Windrose broad reaching at that speed is quite something I can assure you.

We ended up tracking about 60 miles north of the Azores in a big north Atlantic swell. As we began to approach the archipelago the wind seemed to shift slightly and let us head down towards Horta. It finally died out shortly before we reached har-bour so we had a couple of hours motoring and then supped a well earned beer in Peter’s Cafe Sport.

Dykstra & Partners Naval Architects was founded in 1969 by Gerard Dijkstra and for the first ten years was mainly involved with ocean racing. By the 1980s yacht design and the building super- vision of oceangoing sailing boats and fast short- handed racers had become a specialization, based upon Dijkstra’s experience as a skilled sailor.

Much attention has been given to research and development over the years. New designs are test-ed in towing tanks and wind tunnels, while hull and rig strength is studied with finite element analyses. Dykstra & Partners has earned global fame for award-winning yachts such as Athena, Adix, Adela, Christoffel’s Lighthouse, Windrose, Borkumriff IV, Endeavour, Velsheda, Shamrock V, Maltese Falcon, Meteor and Hanuman. Today the team specializes in the design, re-design, naval architecture and marine engineering of classic and modern performance yachts. All members of the Dykstra & Partners team are passionate sail-ors with experience on different types of yachts, including all our own designs.
