A s the 21st Century trundles towardsmiddle age, the optimism thatwelcomed the ‘new age’ in the

‘noughties’ often appears to have been replacedwith a sense of foreboding by many who claimthat this ‘new age’ is beset with challenges anddifficulties they believe never existed in anyprevious era. A preposterous analysis to folkswho travailed against trials and tribulations thatwere no less than anything set before thecontemporary era’s struggling masses.

The potential hazards of disillusionment, globalisation, social disenfranchisement, geographical dislocation, inclusion, exclusion, soulless technology, disproportionate allocationof material resources and poor examples setby heads of state, are common tropes repeatedfrequently throughout human history, merelydisguised by linguistic variables, locale andchronology.

If there is one organisation which can safelyclaim that it has been there and documentedthat, and that there was a fresh and distinctiveslant and perspective of the eternal humansaga, it is Hansib Publications.

The cultural and social revolution whichBritain underwent during the second half of the20th Century has provided the backbone andbedrock upon which the Hansib ethos wasfounded, and the hitherto unheraldedsettlement of people of direct Africanand Asian heritage, primarilyemerging from the unique culturalmelting pot which percolates in theEnglish-speaking Caribbean.

Many observers detect a thread whichemphasises the centrality of the role that theCaribbean has played in the social and politicaldynamics of our age. Hansib’s role as curatoror custodian of the legends and anecdoteswhich populate the 500-year Caribbean odysseyhas led to the publication of biographies, memoirs, poetry and prose compilations, historical tracts, novels and even an acclaimedseries of coffee table books.

* * * * *At its inception in 1970, Hansib Publicationswas the dream of Arif Ali, a Guyanese manwho had no formal experience in publishing. He had settled in England and recognisedamong his fel low travel lers andcontemporaries a grandiloquence and epicsensibility which the mainstream media eitherdeliberately ignored or simply failed torecognise at the time.

Hansib’s legacy as a campaigningpublisher has few equals in Europe, let aloneBritain, as victims of bigoted bureaucracy, policebrutality, nazi savagery and even internecineviolence found a platform and a template forresistance in the weekly newspapers laterfounded under the Hansib umbrella: CaribbeanTimes, Asian Times and African Times.

The trade union activism andacademic accomplishment whichHansib lionised further emboldenedfolk whose positions as transport andhealth service personnel obscuredtheir secret identities as super

sheroes and heroes who had weatheredcolonial rule, fought wars on behalf of formercolonisers and achieved flag independence, butstill voyaged to Britain and North America insearch of opportunity.

Hansib further coalesced this ever-burgeoning community fire through books andeven with the Hansib Community Awards, theformerly annual celebration of excellence whichundoubtedly set a template for the plethora ofbackslap fests which litter London’s socialcalendar.

The flame which was fanned by theseassorted ventures abides in the content of thetomes which Hansib continues to publish.Professional wordsmiths with internationalreputations jostle with first-time authors withina catalogue that stands as a monument toCaribbean ingenuity and West Indian obstinacyand speaks truth to power that Caribbeannations provided the first examples ofmodern multi-cultural societies.

Several of the first-time authors are only‘one-time’ authors; men and women whosevigorously articulated ‘ordinariness’ is performedin an extraordinary landscape where theirnormality becomes the subject of awe. Othersare bitten hard by the writing bug and attemptto forge full-time careers out of their passion.

For many, the remarkable sagasthat they provide us with would havebeen lost forever, as most otherpublishing houses would haveadjudged that the narratives theywere being offered had no

commercial appeal to the wider public. HansibPublications is happy to transform these ‘dustpackets’ that others refuse, into loaves of goldwhich find eager recipients throughout theCaribbean diaspora.

The Hansib imprint grants its authorsaccess to a growing network of retail outlets, both locally and internationally, havingestablished relationships with retail giants suchas Amazon, Waterstones, and WH Smith, aswell as independent bookshops such as NewBeacon Books and Bookmarks, not to mentionthe public libraries which doggedly defy centraland local government threats.

Hansib Publications is proud of itsreputation in providing an outlet for the manyvoices that remain unheard. It continues toencourage the personal narratives that aretestimonies of struggle, survival and successthat cannot get beyond the portals ofmainstream publishers.

* * * * *The buzzword of diversity comes to mind whenone considers that the new scramble for ‘ThirdWorld’ treasure now encompasses the ideaswhich emanate from the consciousness of thesettler communities for best-selling books, award-garnering TV shows and million-dollar generating

movies, as well as the riches whichcontinue being drawn from the soil andlakes of their homelands.

Where Hansib continues to lead, others continue to follow. Any reasonnot to get on board?

50 years in the making

BEFORE WINDRUSHWest Indians in BritainAsher & Martin HoylesWest Indians have been coming to Britain for over300 years, so the arrival of around 500 Caribbeanpassengers on the Empire Windrush in 1948 wasnot new. This book records twenty-eight early WestIndian immigrants, such as Norman Manley, LearieConstantine, Una Marson and C.L.R. James, butalso less well-known figures like Fanny Eaton,Annie Brewster, Andrew Watson and Billy Strachan.

“People of West Indian descent are oftenreduced to one single word: Windrush. Thiscrushes their individuality and is historicallyinaccurate. Asher and Martin Hoyles truthfullyand poetically tell the stories of those whocame to Britain much earlier. Embedding theWindrush Scandal in a much deeper history ofdebt that we owe to those who came toBritain, the authors don’t weaken the case forjustice for Windrush citizens, they fortify it.”David Lammy, MP for Tottenham, north London

“A useful reminder that the arrival of EmpireWindrush into Tilbury Docks in June 1948 wasnot the start of migration from the Caribbean toBritain.”Amelia Gentleman, author of The Windrush Betrayal

“Before Windrush should be in every homeand library.”Arthur Torrington CBE, Director, Windrush Foundation

GUYANA AT 50Reflection, Celebration andInspirationWhat is it that makes Guyana such a special placeand why has it remained a secret to the rest of theworld? The answer may lie in its uniquemagnificence: Lush rainforests fed by hundreds ofrivers and streams; more than one hundredwaterfalls; blackwater lakes and creeks; sprawlingsavannahs; and spectacular mountain ranges. ButGuyana also has a somewhat curious history, notleast, because of the challenges it has faced overthe past six hundred years. Many who look atGuyana see only the misguided, external imagegenerated by an over-zealous, ill-informed mediaand miss the true qualities for which this land ofmany peoples has become renowned: Itshospitality, considered among the finest in theworld; its freshness; and its unspoilt natural beauty.

AFTER SLAVERY: INDIANINDENTURED LABOURERSBritish Guiana, 1838 to 1917Dr Bishundut R. SinghMuch has been written about the ravages and evilsof Britain’s colonial past; fraud, force and injusticelitter the historical landscape on which the nationwas built. And this is not just another tome about‘man’s inhumanity to man’. What is different aboutthis book is its in-depth exposition of the eventsand issues – based largely on original andunpublished sources – that informed and shapedthe history of indentured immigration to BritishGuiana. While other works have addressed thevarious aspects of indenture in the former colony, many neglect to provide a comprehensive study ofthe views of those who were actually responsiblefor formulating and implementing immigrationpolicies. This book attempts to fill that gap.

CARIBBEAN CHALLENGESSir Shridath Ramphal’s CollectedCounsel“As a Community we are adrift in the CaribbeanSea as if without chart or compass, making a virtueof being blown by winds of fortune – even whenthey blow us apart. We blame ambition, notourselves, when we fall short of goals we set. Wemake a fetish of pragmatism and a piousness ofvision. The people of the Caribbean do care forCARICOM and all that it implies; but caring alonewill not suffice to secure it if they do not ensurethat their leaders act as if they do as well. In 1975,the challenge was to stay on course. In 2012, thechallenge is to get back on it. Fault lies not in ourcharts, or even in the elements; it lies essentiallyin ourselves; but this, while troubling, must alsomean that correction is not beyond possibility orhope.” Sir Shridath Ramphal
