Welcome to the September edition. As our summer ends and we return from holiday
breaks, extravagant or low-key, local or far away, we are clearly refreshed and looking to make tracks with a rush of local events. And typical of this time are our village shows, such as the Strensall Show on Saturday 3rd September, where we can witness seemingly timeless devotion in pursuit of that perfect leek, turnip, set of 3 onions, 3 flowering heads, or rhubarb jam. I am always amazed at how good the produce looks, and reminded of my failings when I have tried to grow vegetables –too small, ridiculously shaped or diseased to show at my local event! Maybe next year I will put more effort in.... With an eye to our younger readers, we welcome a new columnist to the Handy Mag. Emily, a local
teenager, is going to be writing a monthly piece for the magazine as part of her fund raising activities for a trip to Kenya next year to help build schools in rural areas. She is a very busy person as you can read from her column on page 16.If you have any comments about the magazine please send them to me at the email address below. Its always good to know how people use the magazine and I’m always keen to improve it if improvement is necessary!Well done to Kaye Hartas of Wigginton for winning the July competition.Until next month…

It’s hard to find a
good, local plumber
who you can rely on to
give you a good service
at a good price, leave your house
tidy and provide a
full solution to whatever
your plumbing
needs.
Ahomeowner’s worst nightmare is the plumber who makes things worse, not better,
charges a fortune, fails to answer your questions fully and leaves you feeling even more worried than be-fore he turned up.
That’s why Matthew Benstead, owner of MB Plumbing, is a sight for sore eyes for the customers who rely on his friendly, expert service.
Whether your problem is a leaky pipe, broken taps or a malfunctioning loo, there is very little that plumber Matthew Benstead hasn’t seen and fixed.
Specialising in plumbing odd jobs in York and the surrounding area, Matthew has literally sorted out dozens of plumbing ‘niggles’ in homes of all sizes.
With no call-out charge and 24-hour availability, Matthew can solve just about any plumbing problem at good prices.
As well as repairs, Matthew is happy to carry out improvement jobs such as installing a shower, fitting new taps or replacing any other
plumbing fixtures. His friendly manner and very good
prices have stood him in good stead, and he’s slowly building a reputation up as an honest, skilled plumber who can be trusted, with much of his work coming through recommendation.
That means there is no hard sell or scare tactics from MB Plumbing – just quality work and the relief of having your plumbing problems sorted with-out breaking the bank.
Bathroom installationIf you’re looking for a new bathroom suite, MB Plumbing can take care of the entire process from start to finish.
With a portfolio of stunning looking bathrooms under his belt, Matthew can give you skilled advice on how to make the most of your bathroom. He will work with you on the bathroom design, making sure the styles and fixtures you choose are exactly right for the room, the budget, and your own taste.
He will then take care of the full installation including plumbing, deco-rating and tiling, bringing in a qualified electrician for any electrics work.
The whole job will be project man-aged by MB Plumbing, and minimis-ing hassle and disruption to you is the priority.
DrainsMB Plumbing was set up two years ago by Matthew, who previously spent seven years working for Dy-norod.
That experience means he can offer a specialist service to take care of your drains. As well as being
stressful, a blocked drain can be a health hazard and an indication of deeper problems with your property.
Matthew can unblock and clear your drains using high pressure jet washing – which has been proven to be more effective than the traditional methods of drain rods. Concrete, fat, grease and tree roots are no match for MB Plumbing.
You can save yourself a lot of has-sle before buying a new property by having its drains checked out with CCTV. Matthew can send a camera down the inside of a drain to check for any hidden problems that could prove costly further down the line. Should anything be discovered, it means you can make an informed decision about buying the property, and even negotiate with the seller to allow for any future work required on the drains.
For peace of mind and an expert local service you can trust, call MB Plumbing on 07921 760727, or 01904 761242, or visit www.mbplumbing.co.uk

What our customers say...“Our heating was not sufficiently working in our spare room and we wanted Matthew to install an additional radiator in that room. Matthew advised that based on the size and capacity of the radiator in the room, this was unnecessary. After investigation Matthew bled, balanced and amended the heating inlet valve to fully open on the single radiator in that room. This was instead of the expense and upheaval of installing a second radiator as we originally requested. Matthew has immense enthusiasm towards assisting his customers. We would have no hesitation to recommend Matthew Benstead for the excellent and friendly work carried out for us”. Harry and Deborah Gardner, Haxby
“I found MB Plumbing services to be friendly, efficient and extremely reliable. Work was carried out to the highest standards and more importantly everything was explained and detailed from quotation right through to completion”. Ruth Walker of Haxby

Following two very successful summer concerts, the Stamford
Bridge Singers are now looking forward to the autumn term and to three more singing engagements in October.
On Sunday 2nd October, they will be on tour to Teeside and North Yorkshire, singing for the Mass at 10am at Middlesbrough Roman Catholic Cathedral, and then singing
Choral Evensong at St Mary’s Church in Thirsk at 3pm.
On Saturday 15th October, the Singers will be performing a concert entitled ‘O Sing Joyfully’ at 7.30pm at St Thomas’ Church in Brompton near Northallerton. The evening’s entertainment will include some favourite sacred works by Mozart, Weelkes, Stainer, Tchaikovsky and Wood, with a lighter second half featuring songs from the shows and some saxophone solos. The conductor will be Michael
Wiles and accompanist Dr Ray Sturdy.
The Stamford Bridge Singers has room for a few more tenors and basses, so if you are a reasonable singer who would like to join us, please take a look at our website: www.stamfordbridgesingers.btck.co.uk or telephone Rosemary Downey on 01904 787181

Hi, my name is Emily and I am going to be
writing a new monthly column for the Handy Mag.
It’s quickly coming to the end of the summer holidays, and it’ll be back to the monotonous school routine before you know it. If, like me, you are going back into year 11 then I wish you luck in all of your upcoming exams, if not then enjoy it whilst you can - and make the most of it!
Most people go back to school either feeling refreshed from a long busy holiday and ready for working, or feeling flat having just spent their annual break sat around with little to do other than update their facebook page. Not me. I have spent the majority of my holidays rushing from Pony Camp, to a weekend away with a friend, down to Granny’s, back home for about 25 minutes (in which time I am expected to unpack and re-pack!), to another friend’s house and then straight up to Northumberland for a camping trip! Phew...
My return to school will be a chance to regain normality, do something constructive and get the motivation to fit in a few dog walks. For those of you who have a canine companion, you will know how much more appealing a hot drink sat by the computer is, when the alternative is taking the dog out for a walk on a typical rainy Yorkshire summer’s day. This is why I advise you now, if it is a warm day (which are becoming more and more rare) then either step outside with a friend, go to the beach with the family or go on the internet and search for walks you can do. And take the dog with you!Good luck back at school; and see you next month,
Back to schoolfor a rest...?!

Keep the kids happy with their own individual versions using small crusty rolls. Fill with layers of mild Cheddar or Edam cheese and wafer thin ham or sliced cold sausages adding a thin layer of pickle or tomato relish. Alternatively, mash a can of drained tuna with some mayonnaise and layer with crisp little gem salad leaves and grated carrot.
To serve 4 people, you’ll need a large round, oval or oblong fresh crusty loaf. Slice the top off and scoop out the inside of the loaf, leaving a 1cm (1/2in) thick wall.
Brush the inside wall of the loaf with some good quality olive oil. For extra flavour spread a thin layer of red or green pesto sauce or sun dried tomato paste inside the loaf.
Choose a colourful selection of 3-4 fillings. Cold chicken, smoked ham, salami, cheese, firm sliced tomatoes, roasted vegetables (such as peppers, courgettes or aubergines), baby spinach leaves or fresh herbs like parsley and basil are all ideal. Chopped olives, capers or anchovy fillets will give extra flavour. Avoid watery sliced cucumber and salad leaves as they will make the bread go soggy.
Layer the fillings of your choice in the loaf, packing them down well. Drizzle with a little olive oil as you go and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
You can make an extra filling layer with the breadcrumbs removed from the loaf by blending them in a food processor for a few seconds with a little olive oil, crushed garlic and fresh basil.
Press the lid on top of the loaf and wrap tightly in foil. Chill in the fridge for 3-4 hrs or overnight. Slice thickly or in wedges to serve.

The Mekong is the stuff of legends but it is the Sap which flows closest to
the city and gives it a particular charm. There are fishing craft painted like rainbows, houseboats, fast ferries to Angkor
Wat, cargo vessels, sampans and frail tourist boats bobbing at anchor. Sail down to the Mekong and you discover bamboo houses along the shore and floating villages where children dive in brown waters and fishermen haul in their nets in the setting sun. The city roofs glow coppery gold across the water and when the cool evening breeze sweeps along the promenade, locals come down to the river, friends holding hands, families sharing a picnic, hawkers selling incense and lotus bloom for the shrines. Flags from many nations fly high above it all and across Sisowath Quay, outdoor cafés with plush cushions and rattan chairs add a whiff of colonial days.
Phnom Penh’s main attractions are conveniently close to the waterfront. Built during the French protectorate, the Royal Palace is a delightful oasis of lawns and trees, dotted with colonnades, spires and overlapping roofs. You find a pavilion donated by Napoleon III, an ‘Emerald Buddha’ made of crystal and a Pagoda claiming 5000 silver tiles, mostly tucked under a carpet. Visiting monks pose for photographs among
the bougainvillea and marvel at the lofty flourishes of Khmer architecture. Others head for the nearby National Museum and its fabulous treasures displayed in a maze of lotus ponds and open galleries.
Today, Buddhism is back after the dark Pol Pot years and spirit houses and temples pop up all over town. Most popular is Wat Phnom, perched on the only hill around. On this spot some 600 years ago, Lady Penh found sacred Buddha images, thus giving the city its name, the hill (Phnom) of Penh. City folk climb up the steps, past mythological lions and snakes, to burn incense and make a wish. Fortune tellers make a brisk trade, monkeys scamper on the slopes and the resident elephant waits for his next ride around the park.
Phnom Penh is easy to explore on foot, as long as you don’t cross too many roads. Streets are on a grid pattern, enclosed by Parisian-style boulevards fragrant with frangipani. You find gold shops and shoe-shine boys, tailors and printers working on the pavements, smoke-filled barbecues and honking traffic ready to pounce at countdown lights. Rickshaws and bicycles weave through it all, laden with multicoloured balloons or household goods, orange-robed monks carry alms bowls and umbrellas and now and then a wedding party files through an entrance draped in lilies and silver bananas. What looks like bottles of squash at the roadside is motorbike fuel. The old French Quarter is worth a peep for its leafy lanes and stylish mansions but for local colour, the markets are a must, whether you are looking for fresh fruit or fried spiders, bags, books, clocks, silk, fake designer goods or stone carvings. Bargaining is hard work but there is always time to relax at the end of the day and watch the sunset over the Mekong.
Phnom PenhCambodia’s beguiling capital
Sizzling in the sun or drenched
in monsoon rain, Phnom Penh takes
you by surprise. Chaotic and relaxed
all in one, with bustling lanes and
tree-lined boulevards, Buddhist temples,
exotic markets and three rivers, the
Mekong, the Bassacand the Sap, meeting
within sight of the Royal Palace.

As I’m writing this, the summer holidays are just beginning and
people are venturing off on their travels. One of the advantages of a ‘staycation’ the UK has to be the ease of taking pets, es-pecially dogs, along with you.
When travelling abroad we consider the possibility of diseases that are not common at home, both for ourselves and our pets. But what about when we travel to different parts of our own country? One such condition that affects our dogs is lungworm, caused by the parasite Angiostrongylus vasorum. Relatively new to the UK, Lungworm is becoming more prevalent, particularly in the south and south west of the country and south Wales. It is currently rarely seen in Yorkshire but could become more wide-spread in the future.
The adult worms live in the right side of the heart and the blood vessels around it, where they lay their eggs. The larvae hatch out and move into the lungs, from where they are coughed up, swallowed by the dog and then shed in the fae-ces. Once in the faeces, slugs and snails eat the larvae which then undergo further develop-ment in these intermediate hosts before being transferred back into dogs when either the slug or snail is eaten or by consumption of their slime. The larvae then burrow through the gut wall and end up travelling in the bloodstream back to the heart and pulmonary vessels to start the whole lifecycle all over again. The whole process takes just 1-2 months.
Dogs can accidently eat slugs and snails by drinking from puddles or outside water bowls. Urban foxes are also hosts for lungworm. A further possibility for spread is via frogs
which eat the larvae from slugs and carry them within their sys-tems until they themselves are eaten by a dog or fox.
Any dog can become infected with lungworm but it is probably more common in young dogs, less than 2 years of age, and it can be fatal if left untreated.
SymptomsWhen a dog is infected with
lungworm they can show symp-toms in 3 different ways,
1. Cardio-respiratory- signs you would see are coughing, difficulty breathing, breathing faster than normal or becom-ing breathless more easily than normal on walks.
2. Coagulopathies- this is where the blood doesn’t clot properly and you would see bleeding into the skin, exces-sive bruising, prolonged bleed-ing from wounds, nose bleeds, pale mucous membranes or bleeding into the eye.
3. Neurological- this is involv-ing the nervous system and you would see behavioural changes, fits, paralysis, inco-ordination or spinal pain.
The presenting signs of a dog with lungworm infection are varied and can affect a lot of different organ systems in the body, making diagnos-ing lungworm quite tricky. The other difficulty is that their isn’t one specific diagnostic test for the condition. Diagnosis is usually based on a mixture of the presenting signs and his-tory along with diagnostic tests including blood samples, x rays and looking for the larvae either in washes from the lungs or in faecal samples.
TreatmentThere are 2 main ways to
treat lungworm, one with a ‘spot-on’ on the back of the neck and the other with a course of worming granules given over 7 days. The spot-on is a one off treatment with only a small number of dogs needing a second treatment, it also pro-tects against several other para-sites, including fleas, ear mites, lice and mites and some types of worms. It is also the mainstay of lungworm prevention when applied every 4 weeks
Other ways in which to mini-mise the risk of your dog pick-ing up lungworm are to clean up faeces as soon as possible and reduce the likelihood of your dog coming into contact with slugs and snails and their slime trails. This can be done by not letting your dog drink from puddles or dirty water bowls outside and keeping paths and patios clear of slime trails and all toys inside the house when not in use.
Luckily in Yorkshire we are yet to have a serious problem with lungworm but with changes in climate and increases in travelling its still something we need to be aware of.

The first lady is Tinker and she has been with us since the beginning of the year. After
been thrown out by her original owners, tiny Tinker found herself straying around the local area trying to find food. She was infested with fleas and had developed a flea allergy causing her fur to fall out and become sore. We got a call from a member of the public who had been feeding Tinker who wondered if we could help so Tinker came into the adoption centre to find a new home. She was initially very shy and had little fur or fat to keep her warm over the bad winter we had. It has taken weeks to get Tinker into fighting fit
condition but now she is raring to go. Her fur has grown back beautifully and she continues to put on a healthy amount of weight. Tinker enjoys chatting to staff and loves human company. She is, however, still a little shy when it comes to physical contact. She needs to learn to trust you before she will show her true personality but when she does its worth it. She would be a lovely addition to any household with no other pets or very young children. She needs somewhere she can gain confidence and trust in a few people and continue to blossom into the affectionate cat we know she is deep down.
The second lady is Lilly. Lilly came to us as a pregnant stray so her long-stay is not down to her been un-adoptable, she’s just had two bundles of fur to raise! Lilly gave birth to two gorgeous chubby
boys around 12 weeks ago and would really like a home of her own now they have gone. She is incredibly affectionate and loves nothing more than giving ‘hugs’ to anyone who offers attention. She would happily live in most homes, even with children and other cats.
We’re hoping both these little ladies won’t hang around for long so please contact the centre if you are interested in these girls or any other cats we may have at the moment – 01904 760356.
We are pleased to report that our longest stay cats Seamus & Tristan, which were featured in the Handymag, have found themselves a wonderful new home where they are living life to the full!
This month york Cp is seeking a
home for two of our lovely long-
stay ladies.

If daffodils and other narcissus are planted from now onwards, they have a good chance to grow roots and start to build up energy for making a great display next spring.
Choose your daffodils carefully and you can have a display starting in late winter (from varieties such as ‘February Gold’) right through until mid-spring. When looking through the selection in catalogues or on garden centre shelves, just check flowering times which will be clearly indicated on the pack. Sometimes this will be as numerals rather than actual dates. For example, February to March could be indicated as 2-3 or sometimes even II-III.
Spring flowering bulbs are generally completely hardy in our climate so unless hit by serious extremes of weather (such as prolonged flooding), they will keep coming year after year.
There should be planting depths written on the packs of bulbs you buy or order, but if not it is generally better to plant slightly too deep rather than too shallowly. As a guide, I would advise planting at roughly three times the height of the bulb. If planted too shallowly they don’t perform so well and are more likely to be accidentally dug up when you’re planting other things.
Buying larger quantities of bulbs usually makes them significantly cheaper per bulb and there are always multi-pack offers to be found, so shop about and choose carefully, but
whatever you go for, unless you choose the very elite super-pricey bulbs, they’ll represent superb value for money. If you’re looking to plant a large expanse, perhaps a bank or the area along the sides of the drive, go for daffodils by the sack rather than by the bag.
I’m a real fan of crocus – choose from purple, lilac, striped, cream, yellow, orange or white. They’re very good value, but here’s a word of warning – I always find that the super-bargain priced mega-bags of crocus contain
a lot of yellow and orange crocus which the sparrows love to shred. It’s better value to pay a little more for smaller single colour bags and avoid the yellows and oranges.
Once established, spring bulbs multiply quite rapidly, so you should end up with more than you started with – this means it’s important to plant at the suggested distances apart, even if it may feel a little sparse for the first year or two. If you want a high-impact look from the start, then you can plant a little closer than suggested, but bear in mind the bulbs will become congested and need lifting and replanting all the sooner.
Spring flowering bulbs need little attention once established – just give them an occasional feed and once the clumps become congested, divide and replant them to give each bulb more space so it can fulfil its potential.
Planting aheadI love this month, it gives me carte blanche for thinking about something I adore: spring flowering bulbs. Why? Because for best results these spring delights need to be planted in the autumn.
Where to grow them
Try simple daffodils like ‘Carlton’, ‘King Alfred’ or English bluebells grown in random plantings, scattered and then planted where they fall, beneath trees in your garden. They’ll look great and often produce a really good display beneath the outer spread of trees where it may otherwise be difficult to encourage much else to grow.
Shrubs and even climbers can also be used for naturalised bulb plantings, but because they’re smaller, grow the more diminutive bulbs such as miniature Narcissus ‘Tete a Tete’, ‘Hawera’, ‘Peeping Tom’, rich blue grape hyacinths or delicate Chinodoxa.
On steep banks where gardening is difficult, why not grow masses of bulbs? Planting on the near vertical may be tricky, but once there you can enjoy the display for years to come.
Pots or other good-looking containers make great homes for bulbs. If you’ve fallen for anything particularly small or expensive, pots can be the answer and will mean you can enjoy and not lose those tiny spring bulb jewels amongst their larger relatives.
Larger planters including tubs and window boxes are brilliant for bulbs too – try a host of golden daffodils in a smart blue pot, some delicate dwarf iris or Iris reticulata in a window box or pot on the front steps where you’ll be able to enjoy their good looks and their subtle perfume.
Whichever type of spring bulb you have in mind, and wherever you intend to grow them, start planning and buying now so that they can be in the ground promptly.

tech fabrics, which resist staining and fading and are water-resistant, allow you to include upholstered furniture – so you could go for long and lean sofas, or European-inspired, modular forms. The finishing touches for this look should be sleek, chic and minimal – an oversized floor lamp, perhaps; a piece or two in acrylic (maybe a curved coffee table or a dining chair), a modern chandelier and maybe some framed black-and-white photographs. And there you have it: glamorous or laid back, traditional or modern, the decoration of your conservatory can reflect your personal style and really make this room an integral part of your home
.All year round
Heating is essential if you plan to use your conservatory in winter, and this is something that’s ideally considered at the planning stage – though a retrofit is always possible. The options are simply to extend your current central heating to the conservatory, placing radiators against the dwarf walls, or to fit underfloor heating, in the form of either warm-water pipes or electric cables. Some systems use convectors, set under the perimeter of the floor and covered with decorative grilles.
In the summer months, your main consideration will be to keep the conservatory cool enough to be pleasant to sit in. As well as opening windows and vents, you can provide a cool waft of air with a central ceiling fan, and block dazzling sunlight with blinds, which will control the heat in the summer and insulate in the winter. Choose from pleated, roller or roman blinds, vertical and Venetians, wood-weave or simple calico, in colours to suit your décor.
Building a conservatory is one of the most popular home improvements. But aside from the question of whether it will add
value to your property, will it add value to your life? A good place to start is with the overall colour scheme. By painting the walls the same colour as the adjacent room, you’ll ensure that the conservatory really feels like part of your home, rather than a last-minute addition. Use the floor, too, as a bridge between the conservatory and the house. Tiled, slate, stone and terracotta floors are beautiful but tend to be rather cold and hard underfoot, so it would be a great idea to scatter one or two rugs to add instant warmth and character, perhaps in a colour used in the next room so as to create a visual link.
With the background colours, textures and patterns established, it’s time to consider the key pieces of furniture – probably a comfortable sofa and some armchairs, perhaps a dining table and chairs – and soft furnishings. Many people choose rattan furniture for a conservatory, and it can look fabulous, adding a touch of exotic, Far Eastern style to the room. To emphasise this look, accessorise with wooden boxes with large brass handles (handy for coffee tables), woven baskets, carved-stone buddhas or elephants, paper
lanterns and carved-wood mirrors. For blinds, cushions and throws, choose fabrics in sand, mustard, deep red, orange and earthy brown. Alternatively, you could aim for a cool, New England look by teaming white-painted rattan with cottons and linens in plains and checks, tongue-and-groove cabinetry and simple floor and table lamps with pale fabric shades. Or go
for a soft, English country look by adding chintzy cushions, painted ceramics, botanical prints, delicate chandeliers and
vases of informally arranged flowers.Another favourite in a
conservatory is metal furniture, though it’s best to avoid chairs and tables specifically designed for the garden, as they can look unsophisticated and clumsy; instead, opt for curly, decorative
metalwork, which looks really pretty, especially painted in a soft pastel
colour. Team with toile de Jouy fabrics, old metal café signs, oversized chocolate

tech fabrics, which resist staining and fading and are water-resistant, allow you to include upholstered furniture – so you could go for long and lean sofas, or European-inspired, modular forms.
Or go
for a soft, English country look by adding chintzy cushions, painted ceramics, botanical prints, delicate chandeliers and
vases of informally arranged flowers.Another favourite in a
conservatory is metal furniture, though it’s best to avoid chairs and tables specifically designed for the garden, as they can look unsophisticated and clumsy; instead, opt for curly, decorative
metalwork, which looks really pretty, especially painted in a soft pastel
colour. Team with toile de Jouy fabrics, old metal café signs, oversized chocolate
mugs, painted wall clocks and enamelware with French lettering for a conservatory à la Francais.
For a more contemporary effect, faux wicker furniture (for both inside and out)

Two school friends have designed the cover of a new book which shines
a fascinating spotlight on the history of New Earswick in York.
Angela Wilkinson and Enrique De Obaldia won a competition to work on the book, which explores the history and development of education, learning and the community in New Earswick since it was founded by Joseph Rowntree in the early 20th century.
The competition was staged by York-based graphic design company Red Publications, which created and printed the 192-page paperback for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Andy Douse, a Director at Red Publications, said: “The book looks at how some of the ideas that underpinned the creation of New Earswick village have worked in practice, and how they are still relevant today.
“It also celebrates and reflects upon the creation of the Children’s Centre within the renovated New Earswick Primary School and the brand new Joseph Rowntree (secondary) School.”
Paul Brook, Content and Publishing Manager at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation,
said: “The book has been four years in the making, involving contributions from a number of local people. The result is a fascinating wealth of pictures, information, comment and analysis.
“It’s a great read for a host of different audiences, including residents of New Earswick and the surrounding area, and people with a more specialist interest in education, community development and social justice, from either a historical or contemporary perspective.”
Andy said: “Because the book was inspired by the creation of the new Joseph Rowntree School, we thought it would be a nice idea to let students there design the book cover. We held a competition to find the best design and it was won by Year 11 students Angela and Enrique who joined forces to pool their talents.”
Angela said: “For our cover design, we mixed historical images with contemporary photos to create a scrapbook effect. It’s nearly 100 years since Joseph Rowntree opened New Earswick School, yet his aspirations for education and the community are still at the heart of learning in the village to this day.”
The book is officially launched on 24 September, but is now available to download free from /http://www.jrf.org.uk/publications/education-learning-and-community-new-earswick
Students have designs on new book
Flying high with their latest project are, from left, Gary Henderson, Senior Designer at Red Publications who designed the book, Andy Douse, Angela, Enrique and Design and Technology Teacher Mark Warriner.

Around 50-80% of new mums get the ‘baby blues’ when they feel, not surprisingly, exhausted, anxious and weepy during the first few days after the birth. This usually disappears without the need for treatment about 10 days after the birth.
Postnatal depression (PND)Around 10-15% of women will suffer more severe postnatal depression, sometimes weeks or months after the birth of their baby. About half of cases occur within the first three months, and 75% of cases by six months. These mums experience more powerful and prolonged symptoms of depression such as:• constant weepiness• anxiety, tension• difficulty in bonding with the baby• loss of libido• sleep disturbances, restlessness• exhaustion• feeling isolated or living in a ‘bubble’• feelings of guilt and resentment.
Many women do not realise they are suffering from postnatal depression and battle on without getting the help they need. It is often women who have high expectations of themselves and of motherhood that find the reality of caring for a new
baby hard to cope with.If you feel depressed, it’s important
to let family and friends know how you feel so that you can get support. Your GP can discuss treatment options with you, such as counselling and anti-depressants and direct you to local mothers’ groups which can be of enormous support to new mums.
Puerperal PsychosisA very small percentage of women (between one and three in every 1,000), suffer from puerperal psychosis, which causes severe mental breakdown and may include symptoms such as manic behaviour and hallucinations. Treatment options include hospitalisation, drugs and counselling.
Getting supportBeing at home with a new baby that seems to need constant feeding and changing, who takes all your attention and leaves you feeling exhausted, can be an isolating experience. Take up any offers of help and support from friends and family. If you feel you are not coping, always talk to your GP or health visitor.
bluesBaby
If you feel low or depressed, don’t try to cope on your own and don’t be afraid to ask for help – all new mums need the support of family and friends. Don’t put yourself under pressure to keep the house clean or prepare big meals – rest when your baby sleeps.
If you feel you are not coping, talk to your health visitor or GP – and don’t feel embarrassed or ashamed that you’re not handling motherhood as well as other mums seem to be. Talk to other mums – you’ll find they’re probably feeling just as overwhelmed as you are.
Despite greater awareness of PND, it’s thought that only about half of mothers who need help are getting it. So don’t keep your feelings to yourself – the sooner you talk about it, the quicker you can get support and, if needed, treatment.
If you feel depressed,
it’s important to let family and friends know how you feel so
that you can get support.

It’s the first five-seater mass-produced electric car, but James Baggott finds
out the Leaf isn’t for everybody
Nissan Leaf Road Test
What is it?Nissan would have you be-lieve it’s revolutionary. It’s the first five-seater, all-electric car in production, producing zero emissions and costing just £2 to ‘fill up’. The benefits don’t end there either. Buyers enjoy zero road tax and company car drivers won’t be clobbered by any Benefit in Kind. That means someone driving a 1.6-litre diesel Ford Focus, paying £4,000 company car tax per year, would see that amount back in their pay packets.
What’s under the bonnet?A big fat electric motor. Flip the catch, show any non pet-rol-head the unit and most will be convinced it’s a standard engine – to the uninitiated it certainly looks that way. It’s the fat power cables that give the game away. That motor
produces 108bhp but it’s the big dollop of 280Nm of torque, available immediately, which really makes the difference. That’s equivalent to a Porsche Boxster and certainly makes the Leaf feel sprightly enough.
What’s the spec like?Nissan made little noise about spec on the launch, concen-trating more on the technol-ogy, but customers will be pleased to hear there’s lots to entertain. Headliners include sat nav and reversing camera as standard, as well as central locking, alloys, climate control, a CD player and electric windows and mirrors. The only option is a solar panel on the spoiler that tops up the 12v battery. That costs £250.
What’s it like to drive?Nissan says the Leaf’s range
is 109 miles and has calcu-lated 95 per cent of daily car travel is less than 25 miles and the average journey is 8.5 miles. There are two power modes, a normal and an eco. In eco, power is seriously reduced but the range im-proved and in normal the Leaf is surprisingly swift. What’s immediately apparent is how quiet the car is and how well it rides over bumps – you forget very quickly you’re driving an electric car.
What does the press think of it?Autoblog said the Leaf could possibly be the most impres-sive car it has driven all year. The Green Car Website loved it and said owners would claw back the higher purchase price with lower running costs. Autocar also said that despite

with the government’s £5,000 grant thrown in, the Leaf looks expensive but we’d liken it to a new Apple Mac: It might do the same thing as a normal computer, but knowing you’re at the forefront of technology and slightly wacky-cool for owning it, will make that extra cash worth spending.

Recognising a gap in the market for more reasonably priced
mobility products, Michael Verby set up MV Mobility in March 2003. Since then, MV Mobility has become one of the top 30 mobility companies in the country, offering a wide range of Medical Equipment, Components, Accessories and Consumables and Medical or Surgical Supplies.
What sets MV Mobility apart from their well-established, nationally based competitors is their ability to bring their services to the customer via their innovative Mobile Showroom, which allows them to match the products to your needs.
Because his customers are so dependent on his speciality products and services, Michael firmly believes that they should be fully demonstrated and tested in situ, before making any decision.
Michael advises, “To ensure that the product you choose is safe, comfortable and easy to use for all the users or carers involved, we bring them to your home. That way you can see our full range, try them out in the environment in which they will be used and benefit from the advice and experience of our experienced team – all in the comfort of your own home, avoiding the inconvenience
and upset of having to travel to a showroom.”
Finding you the right product at a reasonable price isn’t the only factor setting MV Mobility apart from the competition. The high quality products supplied guarantee the highest levels of performance but MV Mobility’s after sales service and warranties provide much needed peace of mind for the users of these specialist products as well as their families and carers.
Michael is genuinely dedicated to providing a good range of quality mobility products to enhance your life and ensures that his 6-strong team is equally motivated to achieve the same goal.
With no premises and limited overheads, Michael is able to keep the prices of his products affordable. To further help customers manage costs, MV Mobility offers a part-exchange scheme for anyone with equipment to replace and finance arrangements are available on request.
Continuing to provide accessible, cost-effective products for his customers is a priority for local businessman Michael who prides himself on offering a comprehensive, reliable service where it’s needed most.

Whether you want to take time out to relax in a beautiful setting,
enjoy a walk in the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds, or de-stress and find some clarity through meditation, the Madhyamaka Kadampa Buddhist Centre offers a banquet of delight for both mind and body.
Visitors can make the most of the beautiful Georgian mansion, including the beauti-fully decorated meditation halls, the cobbled courtyard and the old coach house – now transformed into flats for residents. A gentle walk in the 42-acre grounds will take in the walled garden, a beautiful Norman church and a woodland trail.
The World Peace Café serves delicious home-made organic cakes, snacks, hot and cold drinks and light meals throughout the week. All proceeds from the World Peace Café go to the International Temples Fund, a global charity dedicated to spreading world peace by offering as many people as possible around the world the chance to develop happy, peaceful minds.
To enjoy the special Mad-
hyamaka Centre atmosphere a little longer, the Wolds Retreat offers a good quality bed and breakfast service in a comfortable, specially converted part of the building. Local attractions include the Wolds Way walk and Kilnwick Percy Golf Club.
And if you’re really inter-ested in the full experience of life in a residential community, consider a working visit. Food, accommodation, full use of the centre facilities and attend-
ance at any courses taking place are available in return for a willing pair of hands and any skills you can share.
Find out more about Mad-hyamaka Kadampa Buddhist Centre by visiting www.mad-hyamaka.org, calling 01759 304832 or emailing [email protected].
Nourish your mind Madhyamaka Centre this year celebrated 25 years since it was first established as a Kadampa Buddhist Centre by a hard-working commu-nity of volunteers and Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, a spiritual
teacher originally from Tibet. Now around 30 people live there – including ordained monks and nuns.
The centre is dedicated to helping everyone find inner peace through teaching meditation and practical ad-vice for daily life based on the ancient wisdom of Buddha.
Regular meditation classes are open to all, suitable for anyone and ideal for begin-ners. Each class consists of guided relaxation meditations, a short talk, discussion and questions followed by refresh-ments. Once a month, you can join the Sunday morning class and then stay on for a delicious vegetarian Sunday lunch, made with love by skilled resident cooks.
Weekend meditation breaks offer the chance to take more time out, rest, reflect and explore meditation practices more deeply. Every session is fully guided by qualified teachers and, again, beginners will receive a warm welcome and an excellent introduction to meditation.
from it all1Find a comfortable posi-
tion, either cross-legged on a cushion or on a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Keep your back straight, not tense, so you are relaxed but alert. Place your hands com-fortably in your lap, palms up, with your right hand on top of your left and thumbs lightly touching, and gently close your eyes.
2Become aware of the flow of thoughts running
through your mind – you’ll no-tice a lot of memories, ‘stuff’ to do and problems to solve. Gradually try to let these go – you can pick them up again later! Then, check in with your body, and allow any ten-sion or tightness in the body to fall away.
3Start to observe your breath – without changing its natural
rhythm, just watching. Gradually focus your mind on the sensa-tion of breath in your nostrils as it enters and leaves your body.
4Simply stay with this one sensation for as long as pos-
sible, focusing on it single-point-edly. Distracting thoughts will inevitably arise – but try to resist becoming interested in them, allowing them to subside and disappear instead.
5You can practice this for one minute, five, twenty minutes
– or hours and hours! It doesn’t matter how long you sit for, but a regular meditation practice will help you reduce stress and anxiety, improve your relation-ships and become happier and stronger.
Set at the foot of the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds there is a hidden treasure, just waiting to be discovered.

To help you get started York Rotters are holding a 1-day sale of half price Compost Bins on Saturday 1st October
2011 between 9.30am and 12.30pm at Haxby Memorial Hall, The Village, Haxby, York, YO32 3HT.
It is really easy to compost your kitchen and garden waste and the resulting free compost is great for your garden and much better than bought compost. Home compost improves the soil in your garden and healthy soil means healthy plants. As well as being brilliant for your garden, home composting is a great way to do your bit for the environment by reducing the amount of rubbish you send to landfill.
The York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership, which comprises of North Yorkshire County Council, City of York Council and the seven District Councils within North Yorkshire, are subsidising the compost bins. The offer is open to residents in York and North Yorkshire and is limited to 2 per household. For guaranteed availability please pre-order by Friday 16th September 2011. Compost bins can be ordered on the 1st October but availability can only be guaranteed if pre-ordered by September 16th. Compost bins must be collected from Haxby Memorial Hall on Saturday 1st October between 9.30 and 12.30pm.
If you are unable to attend the 1-day sale you can still buy subsidised compost bins, including a 330-litre compost bin for £13 plus £5.49 delivery, until March 2012 (or whilst funding lasts) from www.getcomposting.com. For more information about the offer please visit www.letstalklessrubbish.com
The easiest way to order a compost bin is by downloading an order form at www.stnicksfields.org.uk/york-rotters.php Alternatively contact York Rotters on [email protected] or call 01904 412861
For more information on York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership, which comprises all of the councils in the area visit www.letstalklessrubbish.com or contact them on 01609 532512 or email [email protected]

It feels like a long time since I had any col-leagues. Well, it’s 4½ years, to be precise; so yes, it is quite a long time since I had any col-
leagues. But is that a good thing or a bad thing?I have always main-
tained that the pleasure you derive from your job really derives from those you work with. Whatever you do, from the ludicrously cushy to the back-breakingly hard, you soon start to take it for granted. I’ve been a journalist for many years, and the work has always been interesting with a fair few perks, mainly in the form of subsidised travel and lavish dinners. Not so much now as when I was in the brewing trade press; but I still get the odd trip hither and yon and a few days in Brittany or Belgium now and again do relieve the monotony. It’s work, and that’s that.
You come to take money for granted, too, whether you’re just making ends meet like me or raking in obscene piles of moolah. But rich or poor, people in my experience tend to structure their lives according to their expectations and once they’ve settled into a means-related pattern, and always assuming a modicum of security, money becomes a secondary issue.
Colleagues, to me, are the one thing you can’t take for granted. Some of them you’ll hate. Some of them you’ll love. (Taking either of these to extremes, however, is not advisable!) Some of them you’ll gladly share a few bevvies and a good gossip with down the pub after work. Some of them, on the other hand – you only have to glimpse them in the office boozer and you’re heading straight for the bus stop.
Of course if you have no colleagues, you have no irritants. The one with the irritating laugh. The one with the irritating cough or sneeze. The one with the irritating opinions. You have no enemies, either: Louise from marketing isn’t constantly cosying up to the boss and plotting to subjugate your department to hers. And, of course, you have no meetings.
But you don’t get the good ones, either. Not just the after-work pint buddy, but the bloke who knows all about cars. The one who’s recovered from the cold you’ve just caught and can tell you exactly how long it’s likely to last and what remedy he/she found particularly efficacious.
No, on balance colleagues are a good thing.
Even the ones you loathe serve to make your day less grey. If you’ve got them and haven’t yet experi-enced the glorious freedom that comes with working from home, cherish them. And if you don’t have them, if you’ve taken that leap into the working-from-home dark, join something. Whether it’s the Com-munist Party or the local amateur operatic society or (as in my case) the Rose & Crown Supporters’ Club, it’s a great comfort to know that when you’ve turned the computer off and had your tea, you have your ration of human contact to look forward to.
Because if you don’t have colleagues, you can always have friends...
