Handling and Packaging of Chemical Products
› Direct contact of chemicals is not safe.
› Hazardous chemicals should be put under special containers.
› Using proper PPE (Personnel protection equipment) is a recommended practice.
› Material safety data sheets are very useful because they contain all the properties of the chemical and also proper precautions mentioning how to handle the chemical and what to do if mishandled are listed.
Handling of Chemicals:
Packaging details of chemicals:› Different customers may ask for different quantities. So it is
always an advantage to maintain the most optimum packaging or the most widely used packaging. For example: 840 @ 25 kg Drums, 21 MT / 20'FCL,
› Using various symbols to represent some important properties is very helpful, so that seeing the symbol, one who is handling it will ensure that he is careful. For eg. Flammable, toxic etc
› An updated technical data sheet will help the customer to get an idea about the chemical's properties, uses and packaging details.
› Containers should be leak proof, and properly sealed, and it would be safe if they are not exposed to the environment. Some chemicals react in moisture conditions, or in air, or in sunlight, so depending on their property, container type can be changed. HDPE, Steel, Drums etc.
› Suppose the customer is a manufacturer, he may order the chemicals, but the plant may be shut down and in such cases he will prefer to store it in the warehouse. So packaging can be done in a way that it can be stored conveniently.
