Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Saturday, June 13th 2020 Race 1 #1 Skygaze #6 Avie’s Samurai #5 Diamond Sparkles #2 Ann of Cleves #1 SKYGAZE has crossed the wire first in both of her starts over the Tapeta, although she was disqualified from her win in the Mazarine. In her most recent race in New Orleans she had a very poor trip but was game to midstretch; a better trip and a return to this surface make her squarely the one to beat. #6 AVIE’S SAMURAI was an impressive maiden winner second time out, then continued to race well against winners including a close third in a photo in the Princess Elizabeth. Although she was racing from off of the pace in the route races, that may have been tactical due to the presence of her stablemates; she did show sprint speed as a maiden. #5 DIAMOND SPARKLES was a good fourth in the Natalma, which was her North American debut. Her two subsequent races around two turns were disappointing efforts; she gets back around one turn and will try the synthetic for her return to the races. #2 ANN OF CLEVES showed talent as a closing sprinter last year. She may not get the pace setup she will need to be a win candidate but could easily rally for a smaller share. Race 2 #7 Sayso #8 West Paw #4 Preferred Guest #10 Vespolina #7 SAYSO closed out 2019 with a runner-up finish behind a lone speed winner who is undefeated in two starts. She has only run one bad race around one turn and it was in a tough group; mild upset potential. #8 WEST PAW was a winner on debut last May but had a tougher time in her three starts against winners; even the October 9 optional claiming race she finished fifth in was a restricted Stakes- caliber field. She figures to be forwardly placed. #4 PREFERRED GUEST is the obvious class of the race. Stakes winner, Graded Stakes placed, clearly the most talented horse here. However, she is predominantly a router and this race has come up light on pace to set up her closing kick. Last April she was beaten at 3-5 in a similar sprint with a distinct lack of pace. #10 VESPOLINA was able to break her maiden over the turf in October. She is very capable over the synthetic; as a maiden she was on the board behind eventual Stakes winners Gamble’s Candy and Amalfi Coast. Race 3 #8 Tequila Queen #2 Dreaming of Drew #3 Polyanthus #5 Northern Cross #8 TEQUILA QUEEN was a bit green when debuting at Churchill, breaking a bit slowly and switching leads in the stretch, but got some experience racing behind horses. The experience may make her the one to beat. #2 DREAMING OF DREW has trained at the Webb Carroll Training Center in South Carolina, a high-quality operation. Her dam was a Stakes winner at two who’s only foal to race at two won at first asking. #3 POLYANTHUS has trained at the Casse Training Center in Ocala before having a three furlong gate breeze locally. She is a half to G1-placed State of Honor as well as a couple of other juvenile winners. #5 NORTHERN CROSS has had four local breezes including a relatively slow move from the gate on May 31. Her dam has produced several juvenile winners. Race 4 #5 Golden Wave #10 Bold Victory #8 Olliemyboy #12 Warrior’s Heart #5 GOLDEN WAVE raced wide in his second start at Gulfstream but showed good interest with a bid early on the turn before flattening out. He should offer value as the race looks bad on paper; if he appreciates the Tapeta he could be a threat. #10 BOLD VICTORY was likely second best in his March 7 start at Aqueduct but lost place to a runner who had a far better trip. He raced very well in both of his local starts last fall. #8 OLLIEMYBOY was chasing the talented Casino Grande when debuting at Tampa, flattening out a bit in the stretch after being unable to catch that impressive winner. He seemed a bit green in early stretch; blinkers are added. #12 WARRIOR’S HEART raced primarily in turf routes last year with a few good results. His final start came in October over the Tapeta and was a close second; in terms of speed figures he is competitive. Race 5 #2 Sister Peacock #8 Magic Spell #1 Dreams Are Free #5 Street Zapper #2 SISTER PEACOCK had a terrific 2019 with two Stakes wins and only off the board finish, which came at the end of the season after running a huge second behind the extremely talented Jean Elizabeth. She looks like the dominant speed in this group. #8 MAGIC SPELL did not run too badly in her Gulfstream start on May 8 considering she got the less-than-ideal last-and-widest trip. Although winless in 2019 she ran well behind some very nice horses, including a second behind Summer Sunday in the Royal North; don’t ignore. #1 DREAMS ARE FREE makes her first start off of an extended layoff. In 2018 she was racing very competitively with quality foes such as She’s the Berries. #5 STREET ZAPPER was able to win her first level allowance going a one-turn mile on the grass, then ran a somewhat even fourth behind Amalfi Coast in the Carotene. This group is far tougher than either of the groups that she has been able to beat, but she is a game, trying type.

Race 1 #1 Skygaze #6 Avie’s Samurai #5 Diamond Sparkles #2 Ann of Cleves #1 SKYGAZE has crossed the wire first in both of her starts over the Tapeta, although she was disqualified from her win in the Mazarine.

#8 WEST PAW was a winner on debut last May but had a tougher time in her three starts against winners; even the October 9 optional claiming race she finished fifth in was a restricted Stakes-caliber field.

Race 3 #8 Tequila Queen #2 Dreaming of Drew #3 Polyanthus #5 Northern Cross #8 TEQUILA QUEEN was a bit green when debuting at Churchill, breaking a bit slowly and switching leads in the

stretch, but got some experience racing behind horses.

Race 6

#2 Nashville Knight #8 Glenville Gardens #4 Hit the Ticket #5 Salieri #2 NASHVILLE KNIGHT ran two very good races after being claimed for $25,000 but had a disastrous season at Oaklawn. He is at his best when he gets a clear lead; the two most likely to go with him are Carmenootz and Salieri but he is likely faster than both of them. #8 GLENVILLE GARDENS needed a start to shake off the rust when returning from a long layoff in October, but was able to close the season out with two strong races including a win around two turns. He will be hoping for other pace to soften up Nashville Knight. #4 HIT THE TICKET was off-and-on last year but had a brilliant performance when beaten a solid group of open $25,000 rivals on November 3. Sprinting is not his forte but as a longshot he could be interesting if the pace does melt down. #5 SALIERI was able to win twice last year, winning his $40,000 non-three and a first level allowance. He was not as effective in the tougher open $40,000 and second level allowance races, but this group is somewhat of a mixed bag that he should have a better shot to be competitive in.

Race 7 #4 Clayton #3 Lookinatamiracle #7 Untitled #2 Newstome #4 CLAYTON is the obvious selection here; he went off favoured on debut, stalked the pace then drew off to win extremely easily with a large Beyer. His recent training has allegedly been impressive and is causing the backstretch to talk. #3 LOOKINATAMIRCLE won on debut, then stretched out to a route in the Grey where he ran a very good third. He then went down to Gulfstream where he was a well beaten fifth in an extremely tough race with a less-than-perfect trip. Of the upset contenders for smaller barns in this race, he is the most appealing. #7 UNTITLED was an easy winner in a short field of Florida breds two back, then disappointed in a tough three year old race topped by the two-for-two Casino Grande, also featuring potential Queen’s Plate contender Edge of Fire. He has the speed figures that make him look like the horse to beat, but both of his wins have come in Florida bred races where he was alone on the lead. #2 NEWSTOME returns from a three-month break after a flat effort at Turfway. He was able to win over the Presque Isle Tapeta when facing Pennsylvania breds last fall.

Race 8 #1 Take Charge Eh #2 Owlette #5 Curlin’s Voyage #10 New York Groove #1 TAKE CHARGE EH showed a lot of potential as a sprinter at two. Her Gulfstream winter races were disappointing, the most recent one coming over the dirt against second level allowance mares. Getting back to the synthetic and back to facing three year olds should help. #2 OWLETTE rattled off three consecutive wins last year, each one when making the lead sprinting. She was unable to hold when setting a fast pace around two turns in the South Ocean; a horse like Two Sixty could force her hand early. #5 CURLIN’S VOYAGE sprinted twice last year, finishing second on debut against males behind the dominant Mr. Hustle, then finishing a close third behind my top two selections in the Shady Well. She is an obvious contender and may offer some value if the public writes her off as being solely a router. #10 NEW YORK GROOVE is undefeated over Tapeta, with three wins at Presque Isle and one locally, but has been a non-factor in her turf and dirt tries against some very tough fillies. She will likely be well bet based on her impressive synthetic record.

Race 9 #7 Call Me Wally #9 Kitchen Fire #10 Western Trouble #3 Walkabout Creek #7 CALL ME WALLY plunged from $60,000 in for $19,000 in November and was able to win at today’s distance in track-record time. He is a closer who can benefit if the speedy Marten River is able to match strides with Kitchen Fire in the early stages. #9 KITCHEN FIRE raced twice here last year with good results against much easier company. His form continued to be positive at Presque Isle, but he really seemed to take a step forward in Florida this winter, exiting a wire to wire score against second level allowance foes on the Tampa turf. He is a need the lead type. #10 WESTERN TROUBLE was claimed for $40,000 in July and did not run a bad race for the new connections facing tough company in the Turf Sprint Series as well as a few second level allowances. He is another who will be trying to take advantage of a pace duel. #3 WALKABOUT CREEK won three races in a span of 22 days at the end of last season between the $5,000 and $10,000 levels. He steps up class but he is a very game horse and his speed figures are competitive.

Page 3: Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Saturday, June 13th 2020 The experience … · 2020-06-13 · Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Saturday, June 13th 2020 Race 1

Race 10 #4 American Tap - Best Bet #7 Weed Be Happy #8 Monastery Lane #2 Runway Dreamer #4 AMERICAN TAP set the pace running into a headwind when tiring on debut, then returned to win easily second time out. She returned at Gulfstream on May 9 to be third in a very tough three year old allowance race; respect in her second turf start. #7 WEED BE HAPPY rallied to an upset win in her first start off of the bench last year, then returned to be a decent fourth behind Amalfi Coast in the Ontario Damsel before being sidelined again. #8 MONASTERY LANE broke her maiden third time out in a sprint, but showed promise routing as well, with a close second behind Amalfi Coast in the Carotene and a second (before being DQd) in a first level allowance on November 30. She shortens back up to a sprint; blinkers are removed after one start. #2 RUNWAY DREAMER was able to break her maiden around two turns at Gulfstream then did not embarrass herself in the Ginger Brew. Although she has tried a one turn mile, this will be her first time in a traditional sprint.

Race 11 #8 Firmly Grounded #12 Red Return #6 Impressive Speed #2 Hey Congrats #3 Yola #8 FIRMLY GROUNDED debuted for $25,000 and was able to close to be second behind a lone speed winner. This does not look like an abundantly tough race for the class jump #12 RED RETURN hit the board in four of six starts as a juvenile. He has some early speed and returns as a gelding. #6 IMPRESSIVE SPEED has raced twice at Tampa and has not embarrassed himself, save for an incident where he was loose before the race on May 9. Blinkers are added. #2 HEY CONGRATS had poor trip luck in his first two starts over the inner turf, ran an okay fifth for this tag third time out, then tired after setting the pace in a route on October 18. He looks logical. #3 YOLA showed speed then gave way when finishing fourth behind eventual Stakes winner Rockcrest on debut. He is now a gelding.
