Panel Discussion 1: Health Care Entrepreneurship - Opportunities &

Challenges in India Healthcare System

Discussion Topic :

India Healthcare Market is expected to reach US$ 100 billion by 2015

from current $65 billion, 20% + Growth every year. 2017 projected at

$140 billion, $280 billion by 2020. Presently, highly fragmented and

dominated by Private Players 24.1% p.a. growth till 2020.

At the same time India has the most in equitable healthcare scenario.

On one hand, it is fast becoming the hub for medical tourism where

people from other countries are flocking to get good quality

affordable medical treatment; on the other hand these facilities are

not available to the many of its citizen. More than 50% of Indian

villages do not have access to Healthcare Providers. Government has

also initiated various actions to address the various challenges with

respect to Private Public Partnerships to encourage private

participation in this vital sector.

This has thrown up an incomparable opportunity to entrepreneurs and

people with ideas and vision to make a direct positive impact on

people's lives and also simultaneously presents an incredibly attractive

business opportunity. But the same time there are significant

challenges which needs to be addressed.

Panel Discussion: Encouraging Frugal Innovation & Entrepreneurship:

Finding the Jugaad for the India Healthcare System

Discussion Topic :

In addition to the issue of access affordability and increasing costs of

Medicare is become a big issue. In India 80% of the healthcare

expenditure is borne by the patients, 12% by the state, 3% by

Insurance. As a result Price Sensitivity is high and high level healthcare

facilities out of reach of most patients.

What India health care sector desperately needs now is a new

approach to innovation and entrepreneurship that delivers more for

less and increases accessibility to our large population in Tier 2 /3

cities and villages – that is, more accessibility, affordability and value to

customers at less cost. This requires our Indian concept of “ Jugaad.-

Frugal innovation and entrepreneurship which is innovating faster,

better, and cheaper maximizing customer value while minimizing

costs and resource utilization.

Panel Discussion: Role of Incubators and Accelerators in Enabling

Entrepreneurship India Healthcare System

Discussion Topic :

Many lending institutions, VC/PE and funding agencies are very

hesitant in lending to startup companies which is one of the barriers

to entrepreneurship in the India Healthcare space. Entrepreneurship

plays an important role in the growth of a sector, creating jobs ( job

creators vs job seekers) driving innovation and fulfilling the unmet

needs of people with accessibility, affordable and quality healthcare

services and overall driving the economy, and wellness of the nation

and its people.

To fill this critical gap it is important to have more Incubators,

accelerators which not only provide seed funding but enable the start-

ups to succeed and become sustainable successful organizations

through hand holding, mentoring and providing access to a important

ecosystem.
