Club History

Hamworthy Recreation Football Club was formed in 1948 as Hamworthy Engineering FC and played on the Sports Ground opposite the factory at Fleetsbridge in Poole (where the Tesco supermarket now stands). When the site at Fleetsbridge was sold to Tesco in the late 1980’s the football, along with the Sports & Social Club, moved to its current home at Magna Road, Canford Magna.

At that time ‘Hamworthy Engineering FC’ were playing in the Bournemouth League (Division 1). The Club won the Bournemouth Senior Cup in the 1988-89 season, and after winning the Division One Championship in 1990/91 ‘The Rec’ successfully applied to join the Dorset Combination League for season 92/93 when they finished 3rd.

Success soon followed when the Club won a hattrick of Combination League Championships in 1993-94, 1994-95 and 1995-96.

‘The Rec’ have lifted the League Championship Trophy on another eight occasions, 2000/01, 2001/02, 2004/05, 2009/10, 2010/11, 2014/15, 2017/18 and 2018/19.

The Club have won the League Cup on five occasions - 2000/01,2006/07, 2007/08, 2013/14 & 2014/15.

’The Rec’ consider that their greatest achievement was in 1995, when not only did they win the League Championship, they also won the Dorset Senior Cup, defeating Weymouth Football Club from the Southern League by 3 goals to nil at Magna Road in the Semi-Final, and Poole Town FC, another Southern League team, 4 - 1 in the Final.

The 2001-01 season saw the Club change its name to Hamworthy Recreation FC to reflect the name of their current headquarters

Managers.

1992/93 - 2004/05: Pat Notley 1 League & Cup Double, 5 more Championships AND the Senior Cup

2005/06 - 2008/09: Steve Manuel 2 League Cups

2009/10 - 2012/12: Gareth Daniel 2 League Championships

2012/13 - 2015/16: Keith Whatling 1 League & Cup Double, 1 League Cup

2016/17 - 2017/18: Wayne Smith 1 League Championship

2018/19 - Kirk Grice 1 League Championship

Our proud boast – we’ve never finished below 6th since Ham Eng joined the Combination in 1992/93.

Since entering the (old) Dorset Combination the Reserves have played in the Bournemouth Premier Division (old Div 1). They have had their ups and downs (as most reserve teams do) but remained competitive in League and Cups. 2019/20 saw the Reserves move over to the Dorset Leagues as it was felt that the Bournemouth Prem was getting less competitive.

First Team Match Report 19.9.20. League. Ham Rec 2 Portland United 2 Rec’s first dropped points of the season as Portland proved to be very worthy opponents. The hosts never produced their normal form and offered little in terms of chances. They fell behind twice in the first-half, before a rather fortuitous second-half penalty earned them a point . With Aaron Robertson unavailable Rec played first team assistant Brad Kendrick between the sticks and gave a debut to Grant Cormack and a second debut to Rob Hatchard. Rec were soon on the back foot, going behind as early as the 5th minute when a Portland player latched on to a clearance and thumped a good shot over Kendrick and into the top corner for 0-1. Rec responded with a dangerous George Webb corner cleared, before they levelled. On 16 minutes a George Webb free-kick into the area was cleared, but only as far as JOHN WEBB, who duly despatched his shot from the edge of the area, to make it 1-1. Portland were looking an accomplished side and caused problems for the home defence, before regaining the lead on the half-hour. A scramble ensued in the home penalty area resulting in a handball. The penalty was drilled in to put the Blues back in front - 1-2. Back came Rec with George Webb showing good skills, but shooting just wide. Then the same player combined with Dave Legg, whose cross was headed over by George Deem. But on 43 minutes came a defining moment. George Webb was shown a red card for comments to the ref and Rec were down to 10 men. Worse was to follow as Grant Cormack was sin-binned, leaving Rec with only 9 men. The Blues nearly made it three right on the break, but the ball flashed across the face of goal, with no one getting a touch. HT 1-2. Things got worse for Rec at the start of the second period when Legg was forced off with an injury. But on the hour it was 2-2 when Rec were awarded a penalty for an innocuous push. GEORGE DEEM converted at the second attempt. Rec had a series of half-chances, with Cormack, Todd Coombs and Sam Carter all going close, but missing the target. Carter and Deem then combined with the latter seeing his shot pushed away. Portland drew a good save from Kendrick, but were happy to see out the remaining minutes, despite having a man of their own sent off five minutes from

time. FT 2-2. – Report by John Hutchings

BCS Hamworthy Recreation FC Under 18s

BCS United is a Junior Premier League programme set up by Bournemouth Collegiate

School. The teams (aged from U12 - U16s) compete in the Southern Divisions of the

Junior Premier League on Saturday mornings where players from schools across

Dorset and Hampshire make up the sides.

The JPL programme was set up to aid the sporting development for pupils from

Bournemouth Collegiate School but has evolved into a centralised hub for player-

focused development football in the local area.

BCS also has two U18 teams:

• BCS United U18, affiliated to the Dorset FA, competing on Sundays in the

Dorset Youth

• BCS Ham Rec U18, affiliated with the Hampshire FA.

The latter was formed to introduce a successful pathway into adult football at a good

level, are associated with Hamworthy Recreation FC and play their home games at

Magna Road

Eastleigh weren’t going down without a fight and came back with 2 quick fire goals to close the deficit. It tested the character of our lads to not see a comeback completed and to put a halt to the oncoming wave of Eastleigh attacks, we broke quickly finding Joe Smith to set up Lennon Claydon to smash one in from 15 yards. 5-2. From here, the game saw a pattern of the toing and froing of goals. Eastleigh closed the gap to 2 goals with 15 to go, only for Joe Smith to compete his hattrick by beating 3 players and slot past the keeper to make it 6-3 with 10 minutes left. We stood firm until the final minute when Eastleigh scored once more but it was too little, too late after racing into a 4 goal lead. The season commences with silverware for our now U18s and with 3 more trophies to player for, an intriguing season is to follow. Squad: Birtwistle, Chen, Coombes (Purnell), Drake (C) (Larkin), Doe, Fowler, Musendo, Davies (Claydon), Smith, Kelly, Fisher. Subs Unused: Todd-House (not fit), Bryant (GK). Report by Dan Pidgley

HAMPSHIRE COMB & DEV U18 DIVISION WEST 2020/21

BCS UTD v EASTLEIGH WHITES 2019/2020 Hampshire U16 Cup Final Our BCS Ham Rec U18s managed to turn back the clock to conclude their BCS UTD U16 campaign with a win in the re-arranged Cup Final last Saturday evening at AFC Stoneham. Despite being hampered by injuries to Liam McDonnell (knee ligaments), Cass Lister (Ankle), Sam Morgan (broken wrist) and Euan Todd-House (quad), BCS were still able to put out a very strong 16 man squad to really take the game to Eastleigh. However, this wouldn’t be the end of our injury concerns as the evening went on. After a nervous opening 10 minutes, we took the lead through Joe Smith who raced clear to chip the ball over the oncoming keeper. 1-0. Shortly after, we lost skipper Jamie Drake due to a knee injury following a late tackle. This saw the early introduction of Dan Larkin who hit the ground running in the heart of defence. We doubled our lead 15 minutes later when some fantastic work from Ed Fisher down the right saw the Eastleigh keeper spill Ed’s cross which fell kindly at the feet of Harvy Davies to make no mistake from 5 yards out. 2-0. The half was not over though as Eastleigh created their own chances only for our defence to stand strong before Jake Kelly raced down the left to beat a defender, and cut back for Joe Smith to grab his 2nd our our 3rd on the stroke of half time. 3-0 HT. We spoke at Half Time about sticking to the task and not making any mistakes as we were sure that Eastleigh would start quickly to get back into the game and that they did. The game became quite open from then onwards and both sides enjoyed a share of the attacking threats. The next goal however would see us extend our lead though when a shot was blocked by an arm in the box and Harvey Doe calmly jogged forward from the heart of defence to dispatch a well placed penalty past the keeper. 4-0.
