THE HAMMER DOWN CANCER GAME• Football joined the fight against

cancer on October 12 as the Purdue Boilermakers and Nebraska Corn Huskers battled at the gridiron. For the Hammer Down Cancer game, fans were asked to wear cancer supporting shirts to help those battling the disease and honor those who have survived. The Purdue football team displayed their support for cancer research by wearing pink during the game.

• Cancer is an issue that has directly touched the lives of so many Boilermakers, which is why Purdue is committed to helping make a difference in cancer prevention and research.

Ms. Terry Kix is the Director of Purdue’s Basketball Operations and a stomach cancer survivor. She brought 15 years of field hockey head coaching experience and three years as the senior women’s administrator at the University of Maine to the Boilermaker program. Kix’s primary duties at Purdue include coordinating team travel, assisting with academic progress, community outreach and marketing and coordinating summer camps. In fall 2012, Kix was diagnosed with stomach cancer. She had been suffering from stomach pain for many months. Underneath a bleeding ulcer doctors found a five-inch cancerous tumor. Today, Kix will be sharing her inspirational story of her battle with stomach cancer. She has used her experiences by getting involved with cancer related activities and causes to serve as an encouragement to newly diagnosed cancer patients.

Dr. Timothy Ratlif is the Robert Wallace Miller Director of the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research. He is nationally recognized for his achievements in urologic research, including being a part of the team who designed the PSA screening test that is widely used to detect prostate cancer. Dr. Ratlif has been instrumental in creating collaborations in the field of cancer research and clinical treatment. He previously served as the Andersen-Hebbeln Professor of Prostate Cancer Research at the University of Iowa College of Medicine for 10 years and as research vice chair for the Department of Urology for six years. Dr. Ratlif lost two close family members to cancer within 6 months of each other – which is what sparked his passion for cancer research.
