Alexia Tucker is a freelance illustrator who moved to Bristol after studying Illustration at Falmouth.

Her life-like creatures and characterful buildings combine delicate line drawing with wit and humour, and her vibrant colourful work has been commissioned by clients such as Hay Literature festival, the Telegraph and various arts venues and festivals around the South West.

Exploding into the Public Gallery space from behind the studio doors, the designers, makers and artists of Hamilton House come together for their own ‘In-House’ Pop-up Shop to present a unique and intriguing Yuletide collection of wares, with a gift for everyone. (See ‘What’s On This Month’ listings for more info).

As the days get shorter and the temperature plummets the season to be jolly is upon us…

Also a must see event: The Hamilton House Fashion Show, a feast of designers and artists showcasing their work at the creative hub of Stokes Croft. Last year’s fashion show was such a success that we decided to have a two night show this year!

Running throughout December, Coexists very own Winter Pop-up Shop will be here to warm your cockles.

These days, we associate drinking with partying and hangovers, but so many alcoholic drinks have their history steeped in medicinal values that we still hold on to in some senses. The great digestive properties of aniseed and liquorice can be seen in the tradition of these flavoured aperitifs before meals, getting our digestive

fluids going before we begin to eat. Same with the history of the warming drink so many of us will be enjoying this season; mulled wine.

Take of Cinnamon two ounces, Ginger an ounce, Cloves and Nutmegs of each two drams, of white Pepper half a dram, of Cardamums two drams: of Musk Mallow seed, three ounces. Let these be bruised, and put into a bag and hanged in six gallons of Wine. Note that you must put a weight in the bag to make it sink. From John French The Art of Distillation (London: 1653)

Sun 1 Quirkish Delights + B-Sides - A small band with big ideas and a world of inspiration, weird (and catchy) global pop music that’ll charm your socks off.

Mon 2 Emily Wright & The Royals - Her top trio of musicians makes a classy setting for the ex-cellent Emily Wright’s smoothly louche vocal evocation of swing music of the 30s and 40s.

Tues

3Good Biscuits - Hey, here’s a thing! The wonderfully wayward singer/guitarist/banjoista Leonie Evans turns out to be a classic belter of the blues and swinger of the jazz and crooner’n’plucker Ben Sayer is too! So here they are, dusting their brooms with Memphis Minnie and her ilk, and generally making whoopee for your general delectation.

Wed 4 Rostrum Balkanova - Circus music man supreme Pete Swaffer-Reynolds wafts us all to the reckless pleasures of an abandoned big top on the edge of reality.

Thur

5Bristol Afrobeat Project - What it says on the can: they come from Bristol - all ten of ‘em - and they play the kind of pile-driving West African funk that Fela Kuti and his drumming legend Tony Allen pioneered in the 70s. They’re pretty good at it, too. Any more questions?

Fri

6Baila La Cumbia + Belafonte - Catching the rich and spicy mix of music from the Carib-bean coast of South America, Baila la Cumbia’s mix of salsa, ska and (of course) cumber is a non-step sequence of infectious rhythms and chirpy good-time dance tunes with all the energy and intricacy of a 9-piece band.

Sat

7

Wormfood presents MC Xander + Bobby Gandolf - Gob-smacking, jaw-drop-ping … just two of the countless skills employed by beat-boxing loop-fiend MC Xander as he builds stinking high production hip-hop numbers from scratch (and we’re not talking decks, there!). ‘Check the bass, check the middle, check the treble’ he challenges and, yes, it’s all there, to maximum gob-smacking, jaw-dropping effect.

Sun 8Acousticians + B-Sides - Ace violinist and Balkaneer Fiona Barrow selects a choice ensem-ble of acoustic musicians to join her for an unpredictable voyage into the wider realms of improvisation.

Mon 9 Canteen Jazz Sessions - An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes.

Tues 10Julia Turner - Finding herself on a street corner in Melbourne pushed Bristol singer-songwriter Julia Turner to take the plunge and busk. Now she’s home again there’s an al-bum’s worth of numbers at her fingertips and she’s happy to be sharing them with you.

Wed 11 Jon Pratt Trio - While frequently funky, tenor sax player John Pratt’s a jazzer at heart and this modern jazz trio lets him show that.

Thur 12The International Jazz Disaster - Fast-paced and rootsy renditions of good-humoured classics from jazz’s sleazy origins as the all-night dance party music of New Orleans whorehouses.

Fri

13Cut A Shine + Type Sun - You can never be sure who’s in this London-based anarchic hillbilly barn dancing squad but you can count on them somehow persuading you that you really want to ceilidh. And know what? Turns out you do!

Sat 14 Soul Ingredients + Diss Miss - This powerful gang of seven packs a big band punch thanks to its all-star line-up of seasoned players and the mighty vocals of Pete Coggins.

Sun 15Sam Green and The Midnight Heist + B-Sides - This ridiculously good lap-steel guitar player rolls out his own contemporary folk songs of freewheeling wisdom interspersed with classic blues.

Mon 16James Ladd - There’s an earthy grounding to the way that James Ladd delivers his acoustic soul-funk songs that gives them a timeless sound, reflecting echoes of country blues, contemporary R’n’B and old-time swampy stuff.

Tues

17

Wardrobe Theatre Presents…Oedipuss in Boots - A New Mother Loving Puntomime. - After a sold-out run at Bristol’s Wardrobe Theatre in 2012, Oedipuss In Boots and its all-male cast return with this new mother loving puntomime full of dark, twisted, adult humour, outrageous costumes, hilarious characters and far too much anthropomorphism for its own good. Featuring original music from Kid CarFollowed by...Dakhla - Uniquely fabulous (or fabulously unique) acoustic drum & brass outfit that summons the spirit of Balkan wedding bands and New Orleans march-ing hip-hop with Charlotte Ostafew’s amazing baritone sax swinging funkily through-out.

Wed 18 Paruski - Violin & guitar duo Paruski plunder Celtic and Russian folk sources and, thanks to high energy performance and a heap of stagecraft, whip up a fine frenzy of fun.

Thur

19Screaming Miss Jackson & The Slap Ya Mamma Big Band - Splendidly sham-bolic 8-piece jug band including the great Howlin’ Lord and the amazing Boggy on suitcase drums all fronted up by washboard toting April Jackson who will, on occasion, really scream.

Fri

20Moonshot + Mango Park - One of Bristol’s longest established ska outfits with a fine evocation of the classic Studio 1 sound. Combining spirited brass arrange-ments, authentic vocals and that all-important beat Moonshot can take any party back to Kingston circa ‘64 - and what a place that was.

Sat 21 Aji Pa Ti + Area Boys - This lot of ‘tropical folksters’ give you contemporary cumbia and salsa, with plenty of instrumental flair and all the percussion uplift you could ask for!

Sun 22 The Good, The Bad & The Funk + B-Sides- Thats ‘Bad’ as in ‘Baaaaaad’ and ‘Funk’ as in ‘What for you sitting down?’ And it’s ‘Good’ as in good - obviously.

Mon 23 Canteen Jazz Sessions - An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes.

Fri 27 Howlin’ Lord + DJ - The great Howly makes proper hard-bitten country/rock infused with a strangely appropriate Englishness and driven by punchy guitar.

Sat 28 Session One + Alex Scott - It’s funky party time whenever Session One hit the stage with their repertoire of popular faves from Basement Jaxx to Aretha Franklin.

Sun 29Emily Teague + B-Sides - Emily Teague’s that rare thing - a folky who’s equally at home in the bleep-bursting world of electronica. But today it’s likely to be her acoustic side you’ll see.

Mon 30Leo James - As much a guitarist as a singer/songwriter, Leo James’ original material draws on English and US folk roots, his tunes enhanced with impeccable finger-picking and swoop-ing steel guitar.

Tues

31

New Years Eve Wrong Prom - ft. Transformer + Alex Scott + Area Boys - Dapper disco mavericks and the only British band capable of turning any venue they play into a dream version of The Danceteria in 1979.Get Down & Dressed for the Tacky New Year Bad Taste 80’s Prom complete with Prom King & Queen - Think Breakfast Club meets Pretty in Pink
