H ow this great city on the Elbe is adapting to climate change from planting gardens on its motorways – is

something to be seen to be believed! Since not every Euro-pean can come see the European Green Capital for them-selves, the Green Capital is coming to them, sustainably by train. This travelling exhibition offers “Visions for future cities” in seven containers and will hit the tracks from April to October 2011, stopping in 18 European cities including Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels and Vienna.

W hich projects define Hamburg European Green Capi-tal? How are other European cities devising sustaina-

ble strategies for urban living? What can each of us do to gain a better future? The interactive exhibition answers the-se questions and poses others. It offers new perspectives on such matters, ranging from the individual to local and lastly to larger global issues. On the way there’s lots to see and much to do: from solving complex problems requiring lateral thinking, to contributing opinions and ideas and de-signing ideal cities.

Come aboard and join in! The Train of Ideas will take Hamburg European Green Capital 2011 across Europe, bringing 18 sustainable ideas on board and invites you to let your thoughts roam free.

A HAMBURG TRAIN PACKED WITH ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY IDEAS The train is made up of seven containers as well as one container for special events. Six containers comprise the exhibition itself:

YOU CAN FIND MORE INFORMATION ON THE EXHIBITION AT WWW.TRAIN-OF-IDEAS.NET

C limate change is a reality that

must be faced. The seventh container stares the facts square in the eye - then delves even deeper. Illustrated audio follows the lives of children and young adults from all over the world, offering a glimpse of what life over the next 50 years might be like if nothing is done now. Luckily, there are many great pro-jects in climate protection and adaptation already in action!

I mportant raw materials and resources are becoming increasin-gly scarce, and if we continue to consume at the rate we do,

we’ll soon be left high and dry. The exhibit “Food for Thought” investigates how many raw materials comprise a simple meal. The sixth carriage fea-tures European projects which use resources in sustainable ways such as recycling or the use of smart grids to supply only as much energy as is actually needed.

T he majority of modern cities continue expanding and as they grow, so do increasing space requirements. Our times

call for intelligent urban planning strategies! We can find the-se for instance by moving away from city centers, or in the third dimension - above, or below ground. Do you have any idea how much extra space we would have in a world without cars? An inter-active plan enables you to design your ideal city to see how your personal preferen-ces affect urban development.

A nyone who lives in a city is capable of

changing it. But what kind of change - and how? The third contai-ner answers these questions with interac-tive features ranging from how choice of tra-vel impacts CO2 emissi-ons, to energy saving tips for the household. Here, visitors may record their views or use the building blocks to share their visions and dreams for the cities of the future. The exhibition will collect all of Europe’s ideas and present in Hamburg upon its return.

N ature is every city’s treasure trove: green spaces and open water provide a habitat for many plants and wildlife. It’s incre-

dible how many different species there are in a big city like Hamburg! As well as how many species disappear from the earth every day.

At the animal sound mixing desk, visitors can compose concerts using a combination of animal sounds native to the city. Additi-onally, plants, animals and peop-le all need water and air to brea-the; laboratory test tubes compare the air and water quality in European cities.

C ycle through the HafenCity on our CityBikes, or ride the bus through all of Hamburg’s outstanding environmental projects:

experience the European Green Capital 2011 first hand. Best practi-ce projects from government, economy and science show why Hamburg won the title, including turning a landfill into a source of renewable energy, a baker who bakes car-bon-neutral bread, a concrete sewer pipe transformed into an ur-ban brook – and many more!
