How to Make Ghost Cupcakes

The f irst cupcakes I made with my mom f or Halloween were these ghost cupcakes. My mom saw them in amagazine somewhere a couple of weeks ago, and she immediately called me saying that I HAD to makethese cupcakes f or Halloween. They sounded like a good idea in my head, and I also pictured that theywould look just as adorable in person, but I had no idea I would love them as much as I did when we madethem!

If I were to choose which cupcake to eat f rom the f ive cupcakes that I presented earlier, this woulddef initely be it. I couldn't get over how adorable the ghosts were when I was making the cupcakes, andsince they have no f rosting, they're even better! (Ok, ok, I realize that is a purely opinion based reason, butit is true, f or me at least). I am not a huge f an of f rosting, and I chose to make this cupcake without any, but, if you happen to really like f rosting, then by all means f eel f ree to put a light layer of f rosting over thetop of your cupcake. (If you use chocolate f rosting, just be caref ul when draping the white f ondant over thef rosting that you don't get the f ondant covered in chocolate!)

Page 2: Halloween

This is literally the easiest cupcake decoration ever. You don't need f rosting, and if you can use a rollingpin and a round cookie cutter, then you're good to go. Ghost cupcake done. Literally, that's all it is. Oh,and a couple of tootsie pops. And some mini chocolate chips. But seriously, that's all you need.

Ghost Cupcakes

Things You'll Need

cupcakes, any f lavortootsie pops (or blow pops, or any lollipop in that round shape)f ondant (homemade or store bought is f ine)mini chocolate chipsrolling pinlarge, round cookie cutter

How to Make Ghost Cupcakes

To begin, take an unf rosted cupcake (or lightly f rosted, if you desire) and insert an unwrapped tootsie popinto the center of the cupcake. I f ound that I had to slightly trim of f the end of the lollipop stick, becausethe tootsie pop was sitt ing up too high in the cupcake. Trimming the end of f is a good idea because it mayhelp to keep the cupcake f rom tipping over once the lollipop and f ondant are placed over the cupcake.

Roll out some f ondant on a f lat surf ace with a rolling pin. An important t ip to keep in mind when workingwith f ondant is that it will dry out and become hard to work with very quickly if it 's not properly covered. Theref ore, keep whatever f ondant you are not using at the moment sealed in a plastic bag to ensure that itstays at a consistency that can be worked with*. Roll the f ondant so it is about 1/8 " to 1/4" in thickness, and then caref ully cut out circles using the cookie cutter.

Page 3: Halloween

Caref ully drape a f ondant circle over the tootsie pop, and gently begin to shape it so that it looks like af lowing sheet, to f orm the body of the ghost. Using a small drop of water as an adhesive, caref ully placetwo mini chocolate chips to create the ghost's eyes. Allow the f ondant to dry on its own f or a litt le while, and you're done!

Page 4: Halloween

*I recommend making one cupcake at a t ime to ensure that the f ondant doesn't dry out. Don't cut out allthe circles in advance, but cut out each circle as you need it.

Eyeball Cupcakes

Happy Halloween everyone! I am a big fan ofholidays and really get into the spirit . I love todecorate and make various themed treats. Ever since I saw these cupcakes lastHalloween, I have been dying to make them. Unfortunately I never found an opportunityduring the past year when eyeball cupcakeswould have really been appropriate, but f inallythe t ime has come again! (Too bad I didn’tknow about these during my ophthamologyrotat ion, haha!) I made these as a Halloweentreat for the teachers at Ben’s school and Iwas so pleased with how they turned out.

These are supposed to be red velvetcupcakes, but for some reason I was having avery of f day with food coloring. The f irst tubeof coloring I added didn’t turn the batter asred as I wanted, so I added some of my Wiltonred gel color. The batter was perfect ly redgoing into the oven, but came out looking notquite brown, but def initely not red. Well, that ’s because I used icing color – not foodcoloring. So, lesson learned – icing color andfood coloring are not the same thing! It didn’tmatter a bit though, the cake st ill tastesfabulous and when it is decorated in such a fun way, I don’t think anyone cares about the colorof the cake itself . Otherwise, these were a breeze to put together and such a fun holidaytreat. I think kids would love them!

Eyeball CupcakesYield: about 22 cupcakes

Ingredients:For the cupcakes:2 eggs1 ½ cups sugar1 ½ cups vegetable oil1 tsp white vinegar2 ½ cups cake f lour1 tsp baking soda3 tbsp cocoa powder1 cup buttermilk1 tsp vanilla5/8 ounce bott le red food coloring

For the frost ing:8 oz. cream cheese (no need to sof ten)5 tbsp. unsalted butter, sof tened2 tsp. vanilla2 ½ cups powdered sugar, sif ted

Brain with Blood Clot Cupcakes

I can say without a doubt that is def initely thegrossest t it le for a blog update I have everwrit ten. And these are probably the ickiestt reat I have ever made (or do you think theeyeball cupcakes win?) But really, that ’s thefun of Halloween! I’ve been want ing to makethese since last Halloween but of course, there never seems to be an appropriateoccasion for such confect ions. Even as aphysician, I was never quite sure if mycolleagues would f ind it funny or just creepyand gross so I held of f . (Wouldn’t they befunny for our neuropathologists, though?!) Finally Halloween is here and my opportunityhas arrived!

These are simple enough to make, and youcan really use whatever recipes you like forcake, f rost ing and f illing – only the method isimportant. Bake whatever cupcakes you wish– I used Dorie’s Perfect Party Cake – hopeshe doesn’t mind :). I decided to use cannedcherry pie f illing for the blood clot and though Ihad intended to puree it , I thought the cherrieswould give it a more clot ted look (haha!) Isuppose you could puree it and call it ahemorrhagic stroke. I used my usual vanillabuttercream for the icing, and colored it withvery small amounts of red, brown and black toachieve that cerebral cortex color. Then justsquiggle on top to get the ef fect of the gyriand sulci of the brain. (I cannot tell you howmuch it pains me that these are not evenremotely anatomically correct , but it wouldhave been impossible.) To help get the lookof a brain, t ry to decorate in two halves togive the look of hemispheres, t ry to give it adomed shape, and make the sides assymmetrical as possible.

I also made a few with vessels using reddecorat ing gel, but I’m not sure I like it as well. To me it kind of looks like subarachnoidhemorrhage – but I’m sure that ’s just me, andnormal people wouldn’t think about suchbizarre things. Happy Halloween, everyone!

Vampire Cupcakes

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you areprobably at least vaguely aware of thephenomenon that is the Twilight series of books(and now movies as well). Our babysit ter has threewonderful daughters of her own, and they are quitethe Twilight fans – especially the eldest daughter,Cassie. She looooves it . In fact , her enthusiasmfor it encouraged me to check it out . I am current lyin the middle of the second book, New Moon, and itis safe to say I now love Twilight too.

So, when I heard that Cassie had a birthday comingup, I knew I wanted to do something with a Twilighttheme for her. My mind immediately went to thesecupcakes and I thought they would be just right . Pure white cake (pale like a vampire, obviously),blood red (cherry) f illing, and white chocolate creamcheese frost ing – yes!!! These turned out just as Ihad hoped and were really not dif f icult to make, just slight ly t ime consuming but no more than anyother f illed cupcake. I was more concerned aboutlook than f lavor in this situat ion and I wasn’t sure ifthe f lavors I had chosen would really complementeach other, but they def initely did. These werevery tasty, and def initely a hit with the birthday girland her family.

Ghoulishly Glowing Cupcakes

Hey Everyone!! I'm just gonna start out by saying, I am so stinking excited about this recipe! A couple ofweeks ago I had a f ollower e-mail me about a f rosting recipe that would glow in the dark. Or I should sayalmost glow in the dark.

Page 11: Halloween

Specif ically she needed a cupcake recipe that could glow under a black light, but the trouble was that Icouldn't f ind one on the internet to try, so I decided to try my hand at making one. Af ter a couple of tries Iam glad to report that I have f igured it out!! Yay! And the secret ingredient that causes it to glow is...

Tonic Water! Cool, right? The quinine in the tonic water causesit to glow under a black light f or some reason. So, thechallenge was to get enough if this into a f rosting withoutmaking it too bitter or runny. Ugh! Turns out this was a litt leharder then I thought, but af ter trial and error I got a f rostingthat I loved that would actually glow, until I started adding colorto it, and no matter what I did I just couldn't get the stupidf rosting to glow af ter I added f ood coloring.

Page 12: Halloween

Then it dawned on me that if you make gelatin with tonic water the jello will glow. What I ended up doing istaking my cupcake and f rosting it. Then I stuck it in the f reezer to let the f rosting get nice and hard. Af tercooling I took the cupcake and dipped the f rosting into liquid gelatin.

Page 13: Halloween

Af ter a f ew dips and trips back into the f reezer to set, the f rosting glowed!! Bef ore you start just know thatthe white f rosting glows the best. The green, or if you decide to do orange, will glow it just isn't as bright. Also a quick note, the darker you go with your color on the f rosting the less it glows. And lastly, if youdecide to make the colored f rosting with the gelatin, discard any lef t over gelatin that you do not use f orthe f rosting. If you want to make glow in the dark jello then use less tonic water or else it will come out waytoo bitter {like a 3 to 1 ratio, 3 parts water to 1 part tonic water}. Hope you all have as much f un withglowing cupcakes as me and my f amily have. Enjoy!!

Glow in the Dark Cupcakes

Sometimes it ’s pretty cool to be a Rock Star Mom! I love it when the kids think what I make is cool, and let’sf ace it, those times are f ew and f ar between, especially with teenagers. These Glow in the DarkCupcakes will put your kids {and adults} in awe of you, but Shhh…don’t tell them…they are really easy!

This cupcake shoot was a f irst f or us, taking pictures at night has a whole new challenge. And let’s notmention that our neighbors think we are even more crazy now. Thanks to Recipe Snobs f or sharing herrecipe.

Page 19: Halloween

Without the dark of night and the help of a black light, the Glow in the Dark Cupcakes are actually green.Let me show you how to make them…

First you will need to f rost your cupcakes. The recipe is below, but essentially it ’s f rosting with Tonic Wateradded. I f ound that using a star t ip f or decorating was best. We also tried orange f rosting, but the whiteturned out best. Af ter the cupcakes are f rosted, pop them into the f reezer while you make the jello.

Page 20: Halloween

And here is where most of the action happens…jello and tonic water!

Mix lime jello with 1 cup boiling water and stir about 2 minutes until dissolved.

Page 21: Halloween

Add 1 cup tonic water to the jello. You can f ind tonic water near the liquor in your grocery store.

Now f ill a large bowl with ice water and place the bowl of jello in. Continue to stir. You want the jello to cooldown, but not begin to set up. When the jello is cool to the touch, remove it f rom the ice water.

Page 22: Halloween

Now it ’s t ime to dip the cupcakes. Remove a couple at a t ime f rom the f ridge and dip into the jello. Placethem back into the f reezer f or 5 minutes. Repeat this dipping – f reezing process 6 times. Be sure to stir thejello each time and watch it so it doesn’t start setting up. If it does get thick, dipping 4 times will work aswell, but 6 is better.

See…I told you it wasn’t dif f icult! Now you can be a Rock Star Mom too! Use a black light to make thecupcakes glow, it will need to be larger than a light bulb, we tried that and it wasn’t big enough. You can f indblack lights near the other light bulbs in Walmart, or sometimes by the home decor area.
