The new formats use nationally and internationally standardized elements to better convey safety messages in today’s workplace. Hazard Alerting Signs identify a hazard, the degree or level of seriousness, the consequence of involvement with the hazard, and how it can be avoided.

Safety Notice Signs give notice of safety practices not directly related to physical injury.

Safety Instruction Signs identify specific safety-related instructions or procedures and may supplement hazard alerting signs by conveying more lengthy safety-related instructional information.

Safety Equipment Location Signs identify the direction to, or the location of, safety equipment.

Fire Equipment Location Signs identify the direction to, or the location of, fire equipment.

Choose a Signal WordThe Signal Word is the heading of your sign and communicates the sign’s purpose to the viewer.

Select a Sign LayoutThe templates below are just a selection of the many options available. Addtional template designs are available on request.

Develop a Word MessageThe Message on a Hazard Alerting Sign communicates the type of hazard, the consequence of not avoiding the hazard, and how to avoid it.

• Provide the most important information first.

• Write in “headline style”: eliminate all non-essential words, omit pronouns (“this,” “that,” “they”) and articles (“a,” “the,” “an”), and avoid hyphenation.

• Use succinct statements. The Action statement gives instructions on how to avoid the hazard. The Hazard statement identifies the hazard, and may be used alone if the hazard is obvious enough. The Consequence statement tells the viewer what will happen if the warning is ignored.

• Use active voice (sentence format: subject - verb - object) and avoid prepositional phrases (“in order to”, “in the event of”).

Our design team will format your word message in an upper/lower-case, sans-serif font in a size proportional to the main signal word and overall sign size.

Add a Safety SymbolEffective Safety Symbols provide critical information for accident prevention by promoting rapid communication to viewers.

• Safety symbols should be consistent in design, and clear and legible to a viewer.

• Choose representational symbols that are more easily understood and include some specifics of the situation, rather than abstract symbols that may cause confusion.

• Hazard description symbols are preferred over hazard avoidance symbols.

• Safety symbols that depict hazardous movement are more motivating to the viewer and should be used when possible.

• Symbols should not be overly cartoon-like or overly dramatic.
