The DETAN Tension Rod System

The DETAN Tension Rod System is an aesthetically pleasing method of provid-ing bracing, structural support or simply an architectural feature. The DETANsystem is manufactured from both carbon steel and stainless steel in a variety of sizes.Adjustment for length is hidden within the system and is provided without the use of turnbuckles or unsightly exposed threads.

The manufacture of every component in the DETAN system is continually moni-tored and fulfills the requirements of the HALFEN-DEHA Quality Management System, certified according to ISO 9001.The DETAN System has been type approved by the Inspection Board for Building Engineering LGA, Bavaria, Germany.

Product features: Easily adjustable for length Available in carbon steel and stainlesssteel Variety of standard finishes Sealed threads for corrosion protectionavailable (optional) System diameters from 6 to 95 mm(stainless steel up to 30 mm) Load capacity up to 2623kN Independently approved

Introduction

DETAN TENSION ROD SYSTEM

Stainless Steel System DETAN-EDETAN Tension Rod Systems in stainless steel are typically used in applications, where a high resistance to corrosion is necessary, or where an architectural finish is preferred.Stainless steel tension rods are available up to six metres long in nine diameters ranging from 6 mm to 30 mm. As with the carbon steel system, couplers and anchor discs may be used to extend the system when long spans are required.

Product range, load capacities and dimensions are detailed on pages 8 & 9.

For all components of the stainless steel system the following finishes areavailable:

- polished (satin), order code p- hand polished (glossy), order code hp

The load capacity of the DETAN system isshown on page 6.

DETAN Carbon Steel System Available in nineteen diameters theDETAN System is supplied in two carbon steel strengths: System diam. 6-12 mm = 355 N/mm²System diam. 16-95 mm = 460 N/mm².By using high grade steels the DETANSystem is able to provide superiorperformance and economy while saving material and weight.

Product range, allowable loads anddimensions see pages 6 to 9.Standard finishes for DETAN-S460 are: Rods & Anchor discs

- Hot Dip GalvanisedFork ends & Lock nuts

- Dacromet(For painting, rods are available mill-finish, but these must be used with hotdip galvanised discs and Dacromet forkends and lock nuts)

Tension RodsSupplied with one left-hand and one right-hand thread to compliment the threaded adjustment facility in the fork connectors. Flats on the DETAN tension rod enable a spanner to be used to turn the rod on its threads. Depending on the direction that the rod is turned the length of the system is either increasedor reduced within the limits of its adjust-ment.

CouplersUsed to join DETAN tension rods in applications requiring long spans. They also provide an additional facility for adjusting the system for length. Each DETAN coupler is provided with two locking nuts. Sizes M12 and above can be supplied with a welded lug to pro-vide a hanger connection if required.Hangers can be used in long span appli-cations to limit system deflection.

Anchor DiscsAnother method for extending the span of the system, or can be used to providea central connection point for structuresrequiring cross bracing. A maximum of eight bars may be connected to each anchor disc.

Fork ConnectorsProvide an adjustable connection between the tension rod and connec-tion plates on the structure or anchor discs. Each DETAN tension rod system has 2 fork connectors, one with left-hand and one with right-hand thread.Fork connectors can easily be identified by the colour-coded end plugs that seal the fork ends from moisture penetration(yellow = right-hand, blue = left-handthread). Combined with tapered locking nuts they provide an aesthetically pleas-ing connection to the tension bar.

Each fork connector is provided with a locking nut, a pin and two circlips.A combination of flat and round seals can be provided to special order for locking nuts M16 and above, if desiredto seal the threads from the accumula-tion of moisture or dirt. Locking nuts for systems M6 to M12 aretightened with soft touch pliers. Sizes M16 and above are tightened using a peg spanner. To provide a visual safety check, the locking nut hides an indicator mark on the tension rod only when the system is within its allowable range of adjust-ment. (see assembly instructions, page 10)

Replacement Items

Connection PlatesUsed to attach the system to the struc-ture. These can be fins for welding to steelwork or T-brackets for bolting to the structure.Care should be taken in designing the position of connection plates to ensurethat the tension rod system is not sub-ject to bending.

Cast-in HALFEN channels or drilled bolts may be used to fix connection plates to concrete structures. For design and supply of connection plates, please contact Halfen.

DETAN Compression RodsDETAN Tension rods satisfy most designrequirements for bracing, but occasion-ally there is a need for a compressionmember to both strengthen and stabilisethe structure.DETAN Compression Rods have beendesigned to fulfil this requirement, whilebeing aesthetically compatible with theother DETAN components.Compression rods consist of large diame-ter tubes, which are reduced at each endto use standard DETAN fork connectorsto the structure. They are designed toorder, and are available in both carbonsteel and stainless steel.

Assembly

The load values given in the tables areexclusively for use with the DETAN tensionrod components. Before installation theDETAN components should always bevisually checked. When connecting platesare used that have not been fabricated anddelivered by HALFEN-DEHA, the materials, dimensional and geometric limits specifiedin the technical approval should always beobserved. The installation tolerances givenin the technical guidance notes should alsobe observed. If, after the delivery of theDETAN components from HALFEN-DEHA,any part is mechanically modified by theuser in a manner, which deviates from theestablished guidance notes, then thetechnical approval becomes invalid. The DETAN locknut is screwed fully on

the DETAN Tension Rod. The forkconnector is screwed on the tension roduntil the the required system length isachieved. The locknut is then screwedback towards the fork connector until itis locked.

There are special markings on theDETAN tension rod to ensure, byscrewing the locknut up properly, thatthe minimum screw-in depth into thefork end is achieved. This is confirmedwhen the mark is obscured and thelocknut is properly tightened.

The pin in the fork connector is securedby two circlips, one on each side. Usesprung pliers for the installation of thecirclips.
