Question number 1: The Internal Structure of the Earth

i. In the space provided below, draw the diagram that shows the internal structure

of the earth. Label the diagram using the following key words:

Inner core Convection currents Mantle Crust Outer core

(5 x 1 mark = 5 marks)

ii. Fill in the blanks:

The internal stucture of the Earth is divided into __________ layers. At the

centre we find the _________ - the ___________ and the outer segment. The

next layer is the _________________. This layer is made up of molten rock

called __________. Earth’s outer layer is called the ____________. It is

made up of solid rock. However, this layer is broken into various pieces called

___________________. These platforms move in different directions as a

result of ___________________ in the mantle. At the boundaries of these

platforms, we find ________________ and __________________.

(10 x 1 mark = 10 marks)

Question number 2: Pangea and the Sea of Tethys

Study the maps below and answer the questions:

World Map – 200 million years ago World Map – 50 million years ago

i. What was Pangea?

(4 x 1 mark = 4 marks)

ii. Write a paragraph (5 sentences) and explain convection currents in the earth’s

mantle.

Question number 4: Fold mountians

i. Fill in the blanks:

Fold mountains form when _____________________ move into each other.

As the platforms continue to push against each other, the land is forced to

________________________. In general, the formation of these mountains

is characterised ________________.

The Mediterranean Region is surrounded by a number of fold mountains. The

___________ mountains in Greece and the ________________ mountains in

Turkey are examples of fold mountains in the Mediterranean.

(5 x 1 mark = 5 marks)

Question number 6: Earthquakes

Earthquakes in Northern Italy, 2012

In May 2012, in Northern Italy, the region of Emilia Romagna,

was struck by two destructive earthquakes. The first quake

took place on May the 20th. This quake had a magnitude of

5.8 on the Richter Scale.

Nine days later, May the 29th, another earthquake struck the same region. It had a

magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale. The epicentre of this earthquake was in Medolla.

These 2 strong earthquakes resulted in the destruction of churches and

factories in the region. Buildings weakened by

the first quake were badly damaged during the

second one. Around 45,000 people were

homeless and around 400 people were injured.

A total of 27 people died in these 2 earthquakes..

i. Read the text above and give the key words for the following definitions:

1. It quantifies the energy released from an

earthquake

__________________

2. The point of the earth surface that is directly

above the point where the earthquakes originates

__________________

(2 x 2 marks = 4 marks)

ii. Read the text above and list 4 negative impacts related to earthquakes:

iii. Mention 2 examples of safety procedures one should follow in case of an

earthquake

(2 x 1 mark = 2 marks)

Question number 7: Water

i. Mention 4 domestic (at home) uses of water

1. ___________________________ 2. ___________________________

3. ___________________________ 4. ___________________________

(4 x ½ mark = 2 marks)

ii. List and explain 2 other uses of water (not at home)

1. __________________________________________________________

2. __________________________________________________________

(2 x 2 marks = 4 marks)

... water is a very important natural resource ... the ammount of water on

earth is always constant ... nearly 70% of the earth’s surface is covered with

water ... only 1% of this water is potable (drinkable) ... clean and fresh water

is necessary for our health ... water is the substance of life ...

ii. Fill in the blanks:

The _____________ warms up the water in rivers, lakes, seas and oceans and

the water ___________. Water vapour (gas) rise in the atmosphere. As the air

cools, the water vapour is condenses into tiny water droplets. These tiny

droplets form the __________________. As the tiny water droplets grow

larger, they become heavier and ________________ falls. Rain water is

recollected in rivers, lakes, seas and oceans and the ______________ will

repeat itself over and over again.

(5 x 1 mark = 5 marks)

iii. Define the following processes:
