    The Family Tree

Khadeejah was born in Makkah. She was the daughter of Khuwayled bin Asad bin Abdul Uzza bin Qusayy. Qusayy was thecommon progenitor of her line as well as the line of the the HolyProphet Muhammad Mustafa (SAAWA) of the clan of BaniHashim, and the future Prophet of Islam (may Allah bless him andhis Ahlel Bayt). She thus belonged to a collateral branch of theBani Hashim. Next to Bani Hashim itself, her family was thenoblest and the most honorable in all Arabia. Her family wasdistinguished not only by its opulence but also by the content of itscharacter.

Khuwayled, the father of Khadeejah, was, like most other membersof the tribe of the Quraysh of Makkah, also a merchant. Like mostof them, he too had made a fortune in foreign trade

Khadeejah's mother had died in or around AD. 575; andKhuwayled, her father, died in or around A.D. 585. Upon hisdeath, his children inherited his fortune, and divided it amongthemselves. Wealth has its own perils. It can tempt one to live alife of idleness and luxury. Khadeejah subconsciously understoodthat money could make her lazy, and made up her mind not to let itmake her an idler. She had such great intelligence and had such astrong will that she did not let the wealth make her lazy. Shedecided to build an empire upon her inheritance. She had many

brothers and sisters but among all of them, she alone had"inherited" their father's ability to become rich. But she showedvery soon that even if she had not inherited a fortune from her father, she would have made one for herself.

Khadeejah Tul Kubra trusted her own judgement

One of her uncles acted as her adviser in businessmatters, and other members of the family also assistedher in the management of business if and when shesought their help. But she didn't depend upon anyoneelse to make her decisions. She trusted her own

judgment even though she welcomed advice andconsidered it. The senior members of her family knewthat one thing she didn't like was paternalism.

With the profits she made, she helped the poor, thewidows, the orphans, the sick and the disabled. If therewere any poor girls, Khadeejah married them off, andgave them dowry.

    Khadeejah had the goldentouch

Khadeejah herself was a homebody and her brothers and cousinsalso did not show any interest in traveling with the caravans. She,therefore, hired an agent whenever a caravan was to go abroad. Shemade him responsible for carrying her merchandise to the foreignmarkets and for selling it in those markets. By careful selection of her agents, and by selling and buying at the right time and at theright place, she was able to make huge profits, and in due course,

became the richest merchant in Makkah. Ibn Sa'ad says in his book Tabaqat that whenever caravans of the Makkahn merchants set outon their journey, the cargo of Khadeejah alone was equal to thecargo of all other merchants of Quraysh put together. She had, it wasobvious to everyone, the "golden touch." It was as though if shetouched dust, it turned into gold. The citizens of Makkah, gave her the title of the Princess of the Quraysh. They also called her thePrincess of Makkah.

Khadeejah the monotheist (believed inone God)

Waraqa bin Naufal a cousin of Khadeejah was a Hanif (one whoturned away from worshiping Idols). He followed the religion of Ibraheem and Ismaeel. Khadeejah was strongly influenced by theideas of Waraqa, and she shared his contempt for the idols andthe idolaters. She did not associate any partners) with theCreator. Like Waraqa and some other members of the family, shetoo was a follower of the prophets Ibrahim and Ismael.

    Khadeejah was a Muwahhid (monotheist)!

What Khadeejah did not know at this time was that within a fewyears, her destiny was going to be intertwined with the destiny of Holy Prophet Muhammad Mustafa (SAAWA), the apostle of Monotheism (Tauheed); and with the destiny of Islam, the creedof Monotheism.

    Tahira (the pure)

Even more remarkably, Khadeejah also earned a third title. Shewas called "Tahirah" which means "the pure one." Who gave thetitle of Tahirah upon her? Incredibly, it was given to her by the

same Arabs who were known for their arrogance, conceit, vanityand male chauvinism. But Khadeejah's conduct was so consistentlyexemplary that it won recognition even from them, and they called her "the pure one."

It was the first time in the history of Arabia that a woman wascalled the Princess of Makkah and was also called Tahira. The

Arabs called Khadeejah the princess of Makkah because of her wealth, and they called her Tahirah because of a pure reputation. They were also aware that she was a highly cultivated lady. Shewas thus a personage of distinction even in the times before Islam -the Times of Ignorance.

    Khadeejah refuses to marry

Khadeejah's refusal to accept the offers of marriage sent by thehigh and the mighty of Arabia, gave rise to much discussion asto what kind of man she would like to marry. It was a questionthat Khadeejah herself could not answer. But her destiny knewthe answer; she would marry a man who was not only the best in all Arabia but was also the very best in all creation. It washer destiny which prompted her to turn down offers of marriage

    sent by commonplace men.

Mohammed (PBUH) theagent of Hazrat Khadeejah

    (SA)

Hazrat Khadeejah (SA) was a superb administrator and a great organizer. But she was also lucky. She had always been lucky in finding good agentsfor her business. Even though she was "success-oriented," she was soonsurprised to discover that with Holy Prophet Muhammad al-Mustafa(SAAWA) as her agent, her luck soared as it had never done before. For Hazrat Khadeejah (SA), there never was in the past, and there never wasgoing to be in the future, an agent like Holy Prophet Muhammad al-Mustafa (SAAWA). If she had the "golden touch" in her hand, he had the"blessed touch" in his.

Hazrat Khadeejah (SA) and Abu Talib worked out the details of the newarrangement. And when Holy Prophet Muhammad al-Mustafa (SAAWA)called on his new employer to sign the contract, she explained to him thespecifics of the trade. He immediately grasped what she told him, anddidn't ask any questions seeking clarification. Hazrat Khadeejah (SA) toldAbu Talib that the recompense she would pay to Holy Prophet Muhammadal-Mustafa (SAAWA) for his services, would be the double of what shehad paid to her other agents in the past.

    Maysarah

Maysarah, the slave of Hazrat Khadeejah (SA), had his own story to tell her. Hetold her the story of the journey to and from Syria, and of the profits that Holy

Prophet Muhammad al-Mustafa (SAAWA) had made for her. But for him, far more interesting than the story of a successful trading mission, was the character and the personality of Holy Prophet Muhammad al-Mustafa (SAAWA) himself.

He was full of admiration for the Holy Prophet Muhammad al-Mustafa (SAAWA)talents as a businessman. He told Hazrat Khadeejah (SA) that the Holy Prophet Muhammad al-Mustafa's (SAAWA) foresight was fail-safe; his judgment wasinfallible; and his perception was unerring. He also mentioned to her Mohammed's (PBUH) affability, his courtesy and his condescension.

Hazrat Khadeejah (SA) found the story fascinating, and she posed manyquestions to Maysara about her new steward, Holy Prophet Muhammad al-Mustafa (SAAWA). She probably would not be surprised at all if Maysarah had told her that Mohammed (PBUH) was the most extraordinary individual he had ever seen and who was capable of doing the most extraordinary things.

    Waraqa recognizes theapostle of Allah

Waraqa also talked with Maysara about the journey and about the Holy Prophet Muhammad al-Mustafa (SAAWA). Maysarah, however, wanted to talk only about the

Holy Prophet Muhammad al-Mustafa (SAAWA). Nothing else seemed to interest him, business transactions least of all.

When Waraqa had heard the long story, he is said to have plunged into deep thought. After a long pause, he said to Hadhrat Khadeejah (SA): "Judging by what you and Maysara have told me about the Holy Prophet Muhammad al-Mustafa (SAAWA), and also judging from what I know about him, it seems to me that he has all the qualities, attributes, characteristics and potentialities of the messengers of God. He might, in

fact, be destined to become one of them in the times to come."

By peering into the darkness of pagan Arabia, Waraqa was enabled, perhaps by his prescience, to espy glimmerings of the Light of Islam, soon to appear on the horizon, and in the Holy Prophet Muhammad al-Mustafa (SAAWA) perhaps he recognized the

    Bringer of that Light.

From Yahya b. al-Ash'ath b. Qays al-Kindi from his father, from his grandfather Afiif: Al-Abbas b. Abdul Muttalib was a friend of mine who used to go often to the Yeman to buy aromatics and sell them during the fairs. While I was with him in Mina, there came a man in the prime of life and

performed the full rites of ablution and then stood up and prayed. Then awoman came out and did her ablution and stood up and prayed.

Then a boy came out just approaching manhood, took his ablutions, stood upand prayed by his side. I asked Abbas what were they doing, and he said that it was his nephew, Mohammad (SAAWA) b. Abdullah b. Abdul Muttalib, whoclaims that Allah has sent him as an Apostle; the other is my brother's son,

Ali ibn Abi Talib, who has followed him in his religion; the third is his wife, Hadhrat Khadeejah (SA) daughter of Khuwayled who also follows him in hisreligion...

The Holy Prophet Muhammad al-Mustafa (saawa) (PBUH)"invested" Hadhrat Khadeejah (SA)'s wealth in Islam. There hasnever been a better "investment" in the entire history of mankind. This "investment" was a guarantee that Islam's march

would not be halted or even be retarded because of any lack of material means and support. It was an investment that, to thisday, is paying enormous "dividends", and will pay "dividends"for every generation of the Muslims, to the end of time itself.

But material wealth was not the only investment that HadhratKhadeejah (SA) made in Islam. She also invested her time, talent, energy, spirit and heart in Islam - an investment otherwiseknown as commitment. She knew her spouse's dreams andhopes, and she shared them all with him.

AND HE FOUND THEE IN NEED, AND MADE THEEINDEPENDENT.

Today, Islam is the greatest force in the world. Its enemies cannotdo it any harm. It is like a mighty oak which the storms of theworld cannot uproot. Yet there was a time when this mighty oak was a tiny sapling, and desperately needed someone to protect itfrom the hurricanes of idolatry and polytheism which threatenedto uproot it.

Muslims may forget it but Islam cannot forget that in its infancy,it were Hadhrat Abu Talib a.s. and Hadhrat Khadeejah (SA) who

protected it. They made Islam invulnerable. Hadhrat Abu Taliba.s. protected the sapling of Islam from the tempests of misbelief and heathenism; and Hadhrat Khadeejah (SA) irrigated it with her wealth.
