Letter from the President, Stephanie D. Moore October already? With another hot Houston summer behind us, we are now looking towards the
upcoming holiday season. This year, HADOA will be supporting a great charity, Boys & Girls
Harbor which provides healthy, comprehensive residential care for children and families in cri-
sis. Please read up on this great organization in this newsletter.
Since our last newsletter, HADOA has hosted two great luncheons and the 2015 NADOA Insti-
tute has completed. July speaker, Yoli Bazan, CDOA, CPLTA gave us some great tips on how
to study for the CDOA and August speaker Kacie Bevers, Attorney with Steptoe & Johnson pre-
sented fantastic information on Trusts. Last but not least, I was able to attend this year’s
NADOA Institute held at the Ritz Carlton, Amelia Island, Florida. What a great educational
event!!! I want to send a shout out to all of the HADOA members who volunteered their time to
put together such a QUALITY and FUN program. If you haven’t had a chance to volunteer with
HADOA or NADOA, please consider doing so as the benefits are endless.
My last letter discussed the possibility of moving away from our registration website “Wild
Apricot” and I am pleased to announce at this time that the HADOA Board of Directors has de-
cided to go ahead and remain with Wild Apricot, despite the issues and errors that occur from
time to time. While newer websites have additional options, we felt that the Wild Apricot cost
increase was worth not having to make any further changes at this time that would have compli-
cated things for members. With this said, if you encounter any issues with the HADOA or Wild
Apricot websites, please let us know.
The Board of Directors continues to work on the goals we set at the beginning on 2015: mem-
bership, website and HADOA history. HADOA’s current membership is 412 which is a great
number! The website continues to be updated but we have received very little regarding the his-
tory of HADOA. Please continue to search through your old documents at work and forward
anything you find our way! Through board discussions, we have been working hard to define a
retention policy for HADOA that satisfies anything that might affect our Not-for-Profit status.
This status helps HADOA save on taxes each year. We are hoping to have these retention guide-
lines rolled out to members in our next newsletter.
Finally, it’s that time of year again, HADOA Board elections. This
newsletter has plenty of information on who is running for 2016 office
and their qualifications. Please take time to read through this so that the
most qualified people are elected. Qualified board members consistently
help to improve our organization, providing you with great networking
and educational events close to home.
Until next quarter...

The July HADOA luncheon featured speaker Yolanda “Yoli” Bazan
(CDOA,CPLTA), 1st Vice President of HADOA and Senior Division Order Ana-
lyst for Hilcorp Energy who delivered some fantastic information on preparing
for the CDOA exam.
The review not only explained the qualifications needed to apply for a CDOA
status, but also provided quick tips, sample questions, and handouts given at the NADOA Plano Re-
view. The presentation revealed that the CDOA exam has been in existence since 1987 and as of the
date of the presentation (July 17, 2015) that there are only 632 CDOAs nationwide.
Ms. Bazan stressed the importance of preparing for the exam by using electronic
mediums, reviewing NADOA’s webinars, creating study groups, and outlining
each section of the CDOA manual.
We would like to give special THANKS to Luanne Johnson, CDOA,CPLTA
(who serves as CDOA Certification Committee Chair) for attending the July
luncheon and sharing her knowledge/experience with all of those in attendance.

Trusts. Kacie’s informative presentation addressed the operation of
a trust, how a trust is created, trustees and their powers, the effect
on third parties, basic operations of a trust, and the impact on title
examination. Mrs. Bevers presentation provided numerous exam-
ples of trusts that had not been set up or used improperly with real

Treasurer ’s Repor tTreasurer ’s Repor t
Submitted by Chris Ramsey, 2015 Treasurer
We are only a month removed from the NADOA institute in Amelia Island, Florida. For those of you
who were able to attend you were treated to a beautiful location, great education, and an overall wonder-
ful experience. However, the beauty of the Ritz Carlton can’t hide the challenges we are facing as an in-
dustry. I have had the opportunity to talk to several of our members who have been directly affected by
the cuts in the industry. It was a heartfelt moment at institute when one of our members took the time to
give back. This person was laid off earlier in the year and recently had the fortune of finding employ-
ment, from her own pocket she gave back with the message to pay it forward to others who have had the
misfortune of losing their job.
Having the position of treasurer in these times should be a challenging responsibility. This is when num-
bers are scrutinized and we have to ensure that there is enough money to keep the group operating. How-
ever, despite the challenges we are facing, I have been humbled by the support of our organization. Not
only by members attending functions, but also by your companies. A few months ago I halfheartedly
challenged our Advertising and PR director, Ernie Leuenberger, to reach $1,500 in advertising income.
The typical budget for this is $1,000. As of September we have received roughly $1,200 with $550 more
promised. Now, we may not have as much income as the organization has in past years, we will still be
on the plus side this year which is all anyone can hope for.
2016 looks to be a challenging year, but with our membership base and the continued support of our or-
ganization, we will come through with flying colors. I have enjoyed serving on the board of directors
and I look forward to the opportunity to continue to serve the organization in the future.

Employment Networking— Elisia McCall
Being the 2015 Employment Networking Director, has been a little discouraging with the lack of new
job postings in the last quarter. Only one new job opportunity was posted the last quarter. Unfortu-
nately major, as well as small independent companies, are still facing reductions in their work
force. Hopefully next quarter more job opportunities will be available. If anyone has some job oppor-
tunities that need the expertise of our members, please contact me at [email protected].
On a lighter note, I did receive a phone call from a supervisor/manager that needed some assistance in
preparing a job description. Included in the decision with this individual was job skills, requirements
and qualifications of Division Order Technician vs. that of Division Order Analyst. I was happy to
help this individual with their job description. If anyone has questions about being a Division Order
Analyst and/or Technician, please do not hesitate to call any of the directors and/or officers of
HADOA. We are here to help and assist as needed.
Business and Rules— Michael Hall
In their October 14th meeting, the board approved an increase in the luncheon fee for non-members. The
new fee will be $40. This change will be effective January 1, 2016 and will allow HADOA to continue
to provide educational opportunities to our members.

Texas property owners now have a new tool to avoid probate. Effective
September 1, 2015, Texas Estate Code Section 114.151 allows for
Transfer on Death Deeds. Lawmakers believe this provision will pro-
vide a simplified process for the non-probate transfer of real estate.
A Transfer on Death deed operates the same as any other conveyance,
except that title does not pass to the grantee until the grantor’s
death. The property conveyed passes outside of the grantor’s estate. To
be effective, a Transfer on Death Deed must be signed, notarized, and
recorded in the deed records of the county where the property is located
prior to the death of the grantor. It may not be created through the use
of a power of attorney. An unrecorded Transfer on Death Deed is inef-
fective to convey property. The statute permits the naming of alternative
beneficiaries in the Transfer on Death Deed; however, the statute does
not permit a grantor to convey under complicated distribution provi-
sions or to several people in varying percentages. If the grantor changes
his or her mind, a Transfer on Death Deed may be revoked by the filing
of a “Cancellation of Transfer on Death Deed” form or by the recording
of a subsequently executed conveyance of the same property. A Trans-
fer on Death Deed may not be revoked by a will.

HADOA Survey Resul ts :
In May 2015, we sent a survey to newsletter readers asking for feedback on a number of topics
in an effort to improve our selection monthly speakers.
We received a broad set of answers from 94 replies out of 535 invitees. Of those that respond-
ed, 18.09% had 0-5 years of experience, 28.72% had 6-10 years of experience, 13.83% had 11-
20 years of experience, and 39.96% had 20 years of experience or more.
We've compiled a few of the top-line takeaways here. We're listening, and while we can't make
all the changes suggested, we plan to refine HADOA going forward. In addition to the results
captured below, 46.24% of members stated they would attend a 2-day CDOA class in 2016.
Thank you for participating in our survey and we hope in the future more members participate.
Please email Kelly Sandoval at [email protected] should you have any suggestions
on topics and speakers for 2016 luncheons.

Contributed by Stephanie D. Moore, President
HADOA is pleased to announce that all charitable contributions will be made to the Boys & Girls Harbor,
Inc. of Houston, Texas for 2015. Founded in 1947 by the members of Houston’s Downtown Optimist
Club, the Boys & Girls Harbor works to provide a stable and loving home environment for children ages 5
to 18 years of age.
On a personal note, my husband currently works at our children’s elementary school, primarily with chil-
dren who have unstable living conditions at home which leads to many of the problems that occur in
schools today. I feel that the environment that the Boys & Girls Harbor works to provide is a primary need
of select school children in today’s society. Please consider making a donation to this great organization.
The Harbor provides residential care, operates The Harbor Academy Charter School, and provides a transi-
tional living program, athletics, team sports and a FFA/Agricultural program for children at the Harbor to
participate in.
At the HADOA December Holiday Luncheon, Ms. Patricia Lind will be speaking about the Boys & Girls
Harbor and we will be raffling off several great goodie baskets to help raise money for the Harbor. All do-
nations are tax deductible.
If you are unable to attend the December Luncheon and want to make a donation, personal checks can be
made out to Boys & Girls Harbor and mailed to the HADOA mailbox to:

HADOA will announce in the last newslet-
ter for 2015 how much money was raised
for this great organization. Boys & Girls
Harbor also accepts in-kind gifts (clothing,
athletic equipment, food, milk, etc.) and had
volunteer opportunities. For additional in-
formation, please visit the Boys & Girls
Harbor website at
