Letter from the President

Yolanda Bazan, CDOA, CPLTA

Greetings HADOA members,

Thank you so much for providing me with the opportunity to serve as HADOA’s 2016

President. I feel extremely blessed to be part of a professional association that edu-

cates Division Order Analysts and feel honored to work with driven and focused indi-

viduals on the current HADOA Board. HADOA Board members sacrifice a great deal

of their time and energy to make HADOA into a phenomenal organization.

In the last few years, I have served under the great leaderships of Luanne Johnson,

Nora Marquez, Amy Gresham, and Stephanie Moore. During my time as a board

member, I have seen HADOA upgrade its website, change the HADOA logo, em-

brace social media, post newsletters regularly, and updated HADOA’s by-laws. In the

last few years, HADOA has been able to save over $45,000 in the bank. I would like

to give special recognition to HADOA’s current and past Treasurers such as Valerie

Turman, Lucretia Jones, and Chris Ramsey for continuously working hard to recoup

funds from luncheons/events. I also want to use this opportunity to thank each of

HADOA's Past-Presidents, Board members, and Treasures for making such wise

decisions that have helped keep our organization on the right side of the balance

sheet.

The oil industry, with its peaks and valleys, may be in one of its deepest downturn

since the 1980s. HADOA's 2016 Board is being very conscientious of just using

those funds brought into the organization from current membership dues. HADOA has

a contact list of over 1,266 individuals; however, at the same time, there are only 279

professional & 30 associate members. If you are not an HADOA member, I highly

encourage you to let 2016 be the year that you join HADOA to impact your associa-

tion.

It is important to note that HADOA does not make much revenue from the luncheons.

HADOA pays up to $29 per person for each attendees' meal and charges $32 for the

luncheon per member. With the state of the economy, HADOA does not want to in-

crease luncheon prices. I highly encourage you that if you are not able to attend a

luncheon, please contact Elisa McCall ([email protected]) 72 hours in advance

to avoid being billed for an unattended luncheon.

Let ter f rom the Pres ident Continued from page 1

For 2016, Kelly Sandoval (HADOA’s 1st Vice President) has worked diligently to provide great speakers

and topics. In January, Bryant Clayton (Unclaimed Property Supervisor at the Texas Comptroller’s Of-

fice) covered the Texas Senate Bill 1589 requirements changes for reporting unclaimed mineral pro-

ceeds. In February, Brad Gibbs (Attorney with Kiefaber & Oliva LLP) presentation on “Common Title Is-

sues Encountered When Operating on Federal and State Lands” was well received by the audience

members. Kelly is really working hard to provide a note-worthy experience with the April 20th seminar.

The morning session will cover Texas topics while the afternoon session will focus on the technical as-

pects of oil gas. I personally am very excited to learn about oil and gas reservoirs and the drilling/fracing

processes involved in acquiring petroleum products. This is a unique and interesting seminar that should

not be missed. See the HADOA flyer in page 5 for more details.

In support of the annual NADOA Institute, HADOA will be giving away two full scholarships at our April

Seminar (April 20th) and one full scholarship at the May Seminar (May 18th). These scholarships will

help with travel and lodging expenses as well as paying for registration. See the HADOA flyer in page

16 for more details.

As President of HADOA, it is my desire to help as many Division Order Analysts as possible improve

their skill sets whether through the availability of member requested educational events or even person-

al guidance with undertaking the CDOA exam. As individuals we are unable to control the economy, the

price of oil, or the onslaught of layoffs; however, we can choose to improve ourselves through educa-

tion. “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you

do you have to keep moving forward.” Martin Luther King Jr. The HADOA Board is here to help you

grow in your career. Please feel free to contact me with any question or concerns at my email yba-

1st Vice Pres ident ’s Report

submit ted by Kel ly Sandoval

The 1st Quarter luncheons were on January 20th and February 17th. There was not a March

luncheon this year due to scheduling conflicts with Easter and Spring Break. The January

luncheon featured Bryant Clayton, Unclaimed Property Supervisor at the Texas Comptroller’s

Office. Bryant spoke about “Texas Senate Bill 1589 and Changes to Requirements for Re-

porting Unclaimed Mineral Proceeds”. We had 82 members and 36 non-members register for

the January luncheon. The February luncheon featured Brad Gibbs, Attorney with Kiefaber

& Oliva LLP. Brad’s presentation covered “Common Title Issues Encountered When Operat-

ing on Federal and State Lands”. We had 40 members and 10 non-members register for the

February luncheon.

Coming up in the 2nd quarter, we have a seminar on April 20th

and a luncheon on May 18th. As a result of the industry downturn, lower attendance, and re-

duced budgets, there will not be a June luncheon. The April seminar features two separate

sessions, a Morning/Lunch session and an Afternoon Session. The Morning/Lunch Session

features speakers from Steptoe and Johnson, PLLC. Karen O. Donnelly will speak about “The

State of Texas – What Does She Own?” and Don Hueske and Ashley Howie Tallichet will

speak about “Transfer on Death Deeds in Texas and Other Nonprobate Estate Planning Mech-

anisms”. The Afternoon Session features speakers from the University of Tulsa Continuing

Education Science & Engineering. Brian Musso will speak about “The Good, Bad, and Ugly:

How Oil Reservoirs Have Changed with Technology” and John Farina will speak about “The

Keys to Unlocking the Shale Bonanza: Horizontal Drilling & Fracing”. The May luncheon

will feature Alyce Hoge with Land Training who will speak about “Oil and Gas Lease Ba-

This is the first newsletter for 2016, I hope you enjoy reading it. We would like for eve-

ryone to get involved in our newsletter. After all, this is your organization, too! If there is

anyone interested in doing a “Fun Facts” page about the oil and gas industry, just let

me know. You can also send any pictures from the luncheons or social events to me

by email for the next newsletter. Also, if anyone would like to help with functions during

the year for HADOA, we are always looking for members to get involved. It’s a great

way to learn more about what your board members do. You never know - you may de-

cide to run to be on the next HADOA Board. I would like to thank Luanne Johnson

and Tiffany Goodrum for helping with the 1st quarter newsletter, two of my really good

friends I met in the Oil and Gas Industry through my involvement with both HADOA

and NADOA organizations over the past several years. So, as you can see, there are

multiple benefits for actively participating!

Updates f rom the Directors

Employment Networking – Lyndsay Romano

As Employment Networking Director, I have been in communication with com-panies looking to direct-hire as well as recruiting agencies to assist in sharing employment opportunities with our HADOA members. In my first four months in this position 4 new positions have been posted to the HADOA site. I have also worked to stay up-to-date with those hiring so that I can remove positions when they have been filled. It is my goal that any position listed on the HADOA site is active and available for our members to apply for.

Corresponding Secretary ’s Note

Corresponding Secretary— Bobbie Coleman

I had the opportunity to represent NADOA at the NAPE Conference at the George R.

Brown Convention Center in February of this year. The NADOA booth was set up

for Valentine Day complete with Photo Booth including props and candy hearts.

Nora Marquez and I snapped attendees’ pictures and posted to the NADOA website.

We also made sure they did not leave without candy sweets for their sweethearts.

The NADOA booth was a huge hit and we received many compliments from every-

one as the most colorful and original idea. Despite the current climate in our industry

there were many booths and attendees at the Conference from all over.

Hope to see everyone in Scottsdale, Arizona in September 7-9, 2016.
