The art scene in Haddonfield isgrowing.

Many of the borough’s arts of-ferings are well known and visi-ble, such as the sculptures fromthe Haddonfield Outdoor Sculp-ture Trust, the Inside/Out exhibi-tion from the Philadelphia Muse-um of Art or the Markeim ArtsCenter.

Others may not be as visible, but are just as influential.

For the performing arts, thereis a little-known non-profit indowntown Haddonfield called the

Haddonfield Center and Schoolfor the Performing Arts.

The HCSPA is a communitymusic school and performing artscenter housed at Grace Churchand its adjoining Grace Perform-ance Hall. The organization isdedicated to providing quality in-struction and a vibrant center forthe performing arts in the South

If one were to drive along theCooper River in Collingswood orCherry Hill this summer duringa weekday afternoon, they maysee a team of sailboats sailingalong the water.

These particular boats are notpiloted by adults, but rather kids, ages 9 to 18, from around SouthJersey. The kids come from asclose as Haddonfield and CherryHill to as far as Sewell and Med-ford. They have different back-grounds, attend different schoolsand have different groups of friends. However, together theyshare a common bond in their in-terest in sailing.

These kids make up the Coop-er River Yacht Club youth sailingteam. The team competes in theMid-Atlantic Yacht Racing Asso-

ciation series on Thursdays dur-ing the summer, racing otherkids from across New Jersey andaround the region. The team willbe hosting a regatta on July 30against the association’s otherteams.

The team members all havehad different journeys into thesport. Some have been sailing formore than five years, some for aslittle as two or three. However, all

11 members talk of their team asits own little club.

“Meeting new people is reallyawesome,” said Annalise Rowl-ing, 15, of Haddonfield. “As far asI know, I’m the only person in myschool or grade that sails.”

    Cherry Hill resident Skye

Mada, 11, said she didn’t knowanyone in her school or group of friends who sailed prior to start-ing.

“When I started, I didn’t reallyknow anyone,” she said. “Every-one was so nice to me.”

    Haddonfield resident Leo

Brickner, 12, said he got into sail-ing because he wanted to do aunique summer activity.

“It’s fun to always have some-thing to do rather than sittingaround doing nothing,” he said.

    MIKE MONOSTRA/The Sun

Henry Brickner, 10, glances ahead as he navigates his Optimist boat down the Cooper River during theCooper River Yacht Club youth sailing team’s practice last Wednesday. The team is preparing to host aregatta against other youth sailing teams from the area on July 30.

Kids share a love of the waterCRYC youth sailing team will host its home regatta on July 30

It was a light agenda at the July21 meeting of the HaddonfieldBoard of Commissioners withonly one ordinance, but becauseof that ordinance, the borough’sHistoric District is one step closerto becoming one property small-er.

At the meeting, commissionersheld a first reading for an ordi-nance that would officially

amend the chapter of the bor-ough’s code dealing with the His-toric District to remove from thedistrict a residential property on

Warwick Road. The property in question was

not originally listed on the bor-ough’s map of the Historic Dis-trict, yet once the owners of theproperty purchased it, confusionarose as to whether it was in theHistoric District.

The case eventually made itsway to Planning Board and thencame to the commissioners, whosettled the matter.

At the June meeting, the settle-ment was approved stating the

house is not a part of the HistoricDistrict. Now that a first readingwas held on the ordinance to offi-cially make the change, a public

hearing and potential adoption isscheduled for the commissioners’August meeting.

In other news:• The board approved several

appointments at the meeting, in-cluding Steven J. Peterson as theborough’s new prosecutor, severalEnvironmental Commissionmembers, an appointee to theHuman Relations Commissionand about 20 appointments to theHaddonfield Municipal Alliance.

    • Pursuant to state law, the

board appointed a staff memberas a qualified purchasing agent,

Ordinance would remove residentialproperty from Historical District

    obituary

The calendar is about to turn the

page to August, and here we

    are, talking about November al-

    ready. We’re talking about Tuesday,

Nov. 3, to be precise. That’s the date for

    the General Election this year.

Yes, temperatures may still soar to

the 90s outside right now, instead of being in the 60s, 50s or maybe even

    40s – hopefully not – as they’re likely to

be in November. Still, the time both we

as voters and the candidates them-

selves spend now determine what our

lives look like for the near future.

This fall, there is no “big name” seat

up for election. Gov. Christie’s seat is

not up for election, though he is doing

some campaigning himself, as we all

    know.

There are no Senate or House of

Representatives seats up for election in

our state, either. But still, 2015 could

prove to be an important year locally.

That’s because, as is the case in odd-

numbered years, all 80 seats in the

General Assembly are up for election.

These elections are just as impor-

tant, if not more so, on a local level

than an election for president of theUnited States. These are the people

    who represent your interests.

    Throughout New Jersey, municipal

governing bodies and boards of educa-

tion will also be holding elections to

choose new members to represent the

    town. Mayors, councilmembers and

school board members often have a

greater impact on your daily life than

    your governor and president.

The governor and president may be

the “sexier” post to vote for, but your

trash pickup, your property taxes and

    your kids’ school curriculum have

more of an impact on your day-to-day

life, and those local post holders are

the ones who control those areas the

    most.

So just because you won’t be voting

for the next governor or the next presi-

dent doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be in

    tune with this November’s elections

    and this November’s issues.

We at The Sun will be providing you

as much election coverage as we can

this fall, especially when there is a con-

tested election at the municipal level. If your town has a contested munici-

pal election, expect a full, multi-week

Meet the Candidates series where we’ll

    provide you detailed information

about the election itself, as well as pro-

files of the candidates and their

    stances on the issues.

If you have any questions you’d like

us to ask the candidates, feel free to

email us at the address to the right.

So while you may still be making

trips to the beach and thinking about

back to school or the start of football

instead of heading to the polls, don’t

fall behind on the issues. What hap-

pens behind those curtains in Novem-

ber could have a profound impact on

what happens in front of them for the

    foreseeable future.

    in our opinion

Get ready to voteThis year’s election is very  important for New Jersey residents

    Your thoughts

We want to hear your thoughts aboutwhat’s important to you this electionseason. Send your thoughts and questionsto the email address listed at the right.

Jersey community.“It is important to know that

we are here. If anyone has an in-terest in the performing arts, weare a venue that should be ontheir radar because our offeringsare eclectic and affordable,”Artistic Director MaximillianEsmus said.

Established in 2012, the HCSPAwas founded by members of thecommunity and Grace Churchwhen they perceived a need for a

center for the performing arts inHaddonfield. Knowing they had agreat performance hall upstairs, the community and GraceChurch decided to create the non-profit to provide the space for thatpurpose. Though existing atGrace Church, the HCSPA is inde-pendent to be more available tothe community.

“This church has some amaz-ing facilities, classrooms withSteinweg pianos and an amazingauditorium. They were being un-

derused, only on Sundays andrest of the week they were notused. The founders saw the needfor it in the community and saw

they had a facility to offer,”Esmus said.

In the three years it has beenestablished, the HCSPA hosts ayearly concert series, youth sum-

mer camps, music lessons,Zumba classes, and work and per-formance space for differentgroups.

The popular concert series be-gins in September and runsthrough May. The series for 2015-2016 isn’t quite ready to be re-vealed, but soon it will be on thewebsite at www.haddonfieldarts.org under “Concerts.” It is a greatplace for people to come andenjoy diverse and eclectic music

right in the downtown of Had-donfield. A snippet of the differ-ent musical experiences comingup for the season includes choralmusic, trumpets and folk.

“We’re not quite ready to an-nounce our series, but when wedo there is going to be some greatstuff…We try to get a mix of clas-sical and popular styles in ourconcert series,” Esmus said.

As far as the facility is con-cerned, the concert series is just asmall part of what goes on in the

performance hall. Outside groupsuse the space for performancesand rehearsals. Some groups in-clude The Greater South Jersey

Chorus, which rehearses andholds its annual Cabaret at thecenter, and Symphony in C YouthOrchestra, which rehearsed andheld concerts at the center last

    year.For the school, the HCSPA

hosts a summer choir camp forchildren first through 12th grade. The camp gives children an intro-duction to the performing arts, specifically singing. At the end of the camp, the participants get tosing the National Anthem at theCamden Riversharks. The campfor younger children is currentlyfull, but the camp for fifththrough 12th graders is still open.

To sign up go to the HCSPA web-site and click on Choir Camp. The HCSPA also offers music

lessons and Zumba classes forstudents. Music lessons includeviolin, piano, guitar and voice. The lessons are taught by profes-sionals and, with the center beinga part of the HCSPA, perform-ance opportunities are oftenavailable.

“They are all amazing. If you’re interested in music les-sons, this is a good place to come.

We also offer Zumba classes hereTuesdays at 7 p.m. We’re happy tohost that as well,” Esmus said.

The offerings at HCSPA do costmoney, but it all goes toward thebands, teachers and the use of thefacility. Like all non-profits, itsonly goal is to break even.

Esmus hopes those who attendthe concert series or take any of the classes realize the importanceof the performing arts in thecommunity. Attending a live per-formance or taking a class can’tbe compared to listening to arecording or staying at home, ac-cording to Esmus.

Through the HCSPA, Esmushopes those who experience theperforming arts through the or-ganization get a stronger sense of their own creativity. He hopesthey expand their horizons bothbig, by calling themselves asinger after camp, or small, by ex-panding their musical tastes.

    “Everyone is creative and

everybody has to find an outlet. So I hope our series offer a wayfor people to explore,” Esmussaid.

lo and Sam Carlson, all of Had-donfield, and John Sheehan of Haddon Township and Luke Hin-kle of Gibbstown. The team wascoached by Bruce Parker, JoeMartin and Blair Talty, all of Had-donfield.

The Hammer 9U travel base-ball team is Haddonfield’s firstyouth travel team. Parker, whohas been coaching in town foryears, started the team becausehe felt kids shouldn’t have to joina travel team outside of town, which often conflicts with localLittle League games. Having theirown travel team provides fewerconflicts and also 20 games inwhich to play.

They wanted the young playersto concentrate on learning thefundamentals as well as havingfun. The coaches worked to createan atmosphere where it was OKto strike out or drop a ball, as longas the players put it in the past

and keep giving the best effortthey can, keep playing and stayfocused.

“I kind of stressed to playevery pitch and every out. And to

never give up and believe in them-selves. We wanted them to focusand build a team around that,”Parker said.

As for obstacles, the teamcouldn’t play on its own field, as itdidn’t have one. It had to learn toadapt to all different kinds of fields.

“I was so proud of them and itis a huge accomplishment forthem. They exceeded my expecta-tions,” Parker said.

The team started practicing inJanuary and did so throughMarch until its first game. Fromthere, it played about once aweek, often two or three games ina day.

“They went from rec and LittleLeague players to these tourna-ments where they played two tothree games a day. They were ableto overcome their mistakes andwere physically and mentallyable to stay in the game. They re-ally stayed focused and they did aterrific job,” Parker said.

The Hammer went undefeatedin Tri-State Elite Baseball Leagueplay and advanced to the champi-

onship game in every tourna-ment it played. The team’s onlytwo losses came in tournamentchampionship games. The Ham-mer took home first- or second-

place hardware in every tourna-ment it entered, including cham-pions of the Youth Elite SportsDiamond Classic, second in the

9th Annual War in the Woods Me-morial Day Tournament, secondin the Tri-State Elite Spring Invi-tational, and their most recentand last win as champions of theRipken Highlight Reel Tourna-ment,

“The two we lost were reallygood teams. They put in the greateffort,” Parker said.

When they came in secondplace for the past two tourna-ments, the kids were pretty upset. But they still had the RipkenHighlight Reel Tournament inMaryland. According to Parker, the players were really focusedand gave 100 percent, which ulti-mately led to victory.

“Our strategy was always thesame, to go out there and do ourbest. We just wanted them to per-form well and build better base-ball players. They rose to the oc-casion and played really well,”Parker said. “We couldn’t beprouder and parents couldn’t be

    prouder.”Those interested in joining or

learning more about the teamcan email Parker at [email protected].
