INTRODUCING LAURA JANE LINCK AND HER STUDENTS

This presentation is from a very special group of grade school students that attend Palm Beach Day Academy.

With the help from Laura Jane Linck, they are using Habits of Mind in the classroom.

The results have been inspiring, and is a testament to both Laura Jane Linck and the students belief in Habits of Mind.

Our Essential Question Welcomes students to the Elementary Science Lab#1 our first day... Let's dig deeply into the thinking of scientists...are you one?

Page 4: Habits of Mind in The Science Lab Follow Laura Jane Linck’s Notebook

Starting off with a year of Habits...

#2 explain what it means to you to think like a scientist...

#3...let us now apply our Scientific Thinking to this very Essential Question and our Throughline for the year...

Do you see water?...Next...look and think...

TODAY'S LESSON:

Is water coming out of this jar?

Where is it coming out of?

Why doesn't it pour all over me when I pick it up?

Page 9: Habits of Mind in The Science Lab Follow Laura Jane Linck’s Notebook

Let's remind ourselves of some scientific Habits of Mind that will help us persist in making sense of what we see...particularly when we look at the other jar, that is completely dry...

It is fascinating to see how many Habits of Mind were used in the student’s conclusions

Page 11: Habits of Mind in The Science Lab Follow Laura Jane Linck’s Notebook

What The Students Concluded:

•"I am Gathering Data Through All Senses because I see, feel and even hear the ice making little tiny cracking noises as it melts."

• I am Responding With Wonderment and Awe because I can not believe I have never noticed this before!“

• "I am Striving For Accuracy because I have got to figure this out!“• I am definitely Thinking About My Thinking and I am wondering why my

thinking does not make sense and even worse, why didn't I notice this before?“

• “I am Thinking Flexibly because I am pretending to be the water. I am taking the perspective of the water and trying to figure out why I need to get out of the jar."

More Student’s Conclusions• "I am Taking Responsible Risks because I am not sure what I am saying,

but taking the risk and saying it is helping me to be a better noticer and I think it is even helping me to make sense of this!“

• "We are all Thinking Interdependently because when one of us thinks out loud it helps us all Understand a little more.""Please Mrs. Linck, tell us what is happening, this is so hard to think about!“

• "Mrs. Linck will never tell you the answers, we know, we had her last year she always makes us do the thinking!“

• She will Listen With Understanding And Empathy but continue to Question And Pose Problems! Don't worry, you will get used to it."

What is on the jar, and why? Draw, document and provide evidence for your thinking in your "Sensitivity Sketchbook."

Our New addition to the science lab...WATER frogs..."Sensitivity and Inclination" they help keep us focused on the dispositions we are seriously working to cultivate this year...

The Marshall Foundation will visit both campuses to explain our water shed to all grade K-4 students so that we can all begin to get a better understanding of how rainfall recharges the underground aquifers which supply most of the water to south Florida.

Lots to think about...
