In 2016, I had the privilege of being present when 26 working, low-income families became homeowners for the first time. Those of you who experienced these or other home dedications know how incredibly moving these milestones can be. You have seen and heard the pride, joy, gratitude and optimism in the faces and words of Habitat for Humanity GTA families and their children.

As powerful as these occasions are, it is the thousands of unseen moments that lead to these life-changing outcomes for children and their families. Every Habitat home is possible because of the volunteers who come to our build sites at the crack of dawn preparing for events, greeting other volunteers, or sharing their time and talent as crew leaders. Every “welcome home” moment relies on the unseen hours spent by ReStore staff and volunteers accepting, unloading and selling donations. Every child who finally feels safe playing outside their home does so because someone they never met or

a business or community group they may never have heard of decided to make a donation. Every parent who told me, “I could never have done this without Habitat for Humanity”, is benefitting from the advocacy and efforts of every politician and municipal staff member who went out of their way to be a champion for our work.

When I think back on the wonderful memories from those 26 home dedications, I recall the countless times families looked to me as CEO and said, “Thank you so much for what you have done for our family”. Every thank you. Every handshake. Every hug. I give them back to you, our partners – volunteers, donors, community leaders, politicians and staff – with my sincere thanks for what we have been able to accomplish together in 2016. We look forward to continue growing on our successes with you as we build on the “power of every” in 2017.

Letter from the Chair

The challenges in today’s heated housing market in the Greater Toronto Area, require new ideas. At Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area (GTA), we are harnessing the power of everyone to find new and creative solutions to the lack of affordable housing stock in the GTA.

Every partnership – both the new ones and the long-standing ones – played an instrumental role in increasing our build activity in 2016 and creating momentum for years to come. In 2016, we marked the 13th consecutive year of home sponsorships by the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD), Great West Life Assurance Company (GWLAC) and Great West Life Realty Advisors (GWLRA). It was also a year that welcomed new and innovative partnerships like Duca’s unique Community Hero Mortgage that will see

funds directed to our work over the next five years, and the Toronto Foundation’s first ever social impact investment in support of the first 15 homes in our 140 Pinery Trail project. In 2016, over 8,700 individuals put aside other priorities to roll up their sleeves and give their time as volunteers at our build sites, ReStores, offices and events.

Every partnership, every dollar, every ReStore donation, every hour of volunteer time, every new idea shared, led us to help 26 more families realize homeownership in 2016. On behalf of the board of directors of Habitat GTA, I extend our sincere thanks to every one of our partners who helped us bring strength, stability and self-reliance to families in 2016, and for building stronger communities and futures for everyone.

VisionA world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.

Mission StatementTo mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty.

About UsHabitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is one of more than 1,400 Habtat for Humanity affiliates worldwide sharing a common goal and purpose of making homeownership affordable for lower income families. We are a non-profit housing organization working alongside families and communities to build safe, decent and affordable homes. By offering zero down payment, no-interest mortgages capped at 30 percent of a family’s income, Habitat GTA offers families a hand up, empowering them to build

strength, stability and self-reliance through affordable homeownership. With the support of donors and volunteers, we partner with families in Toronto, Brampton, Caledon and York Region, serving two-thirds of the GTA. Since 1988, Habitat has built more than 330 homes in the GTA in partnership with families so they can have a safe, decent and affordable place to live, and build brighter futures.

About Habitat ReStoreHabitat GTA operates 10 Habitat ReStore retail home improvement stores across the GTA, which sell donated, new and gently-used home furnishings and renovation materials at a fraction of the original price. ReStore donations and proceeds go directly towards building homes, while also helping the environment by diverting thousands of metric tonnes of household materials from landfill.

The ReStore model of sustainability through reuse and recycle has been a great way for me to support Habitat for Humanity’s mission to build more homes. It is an energizing environment of supportive staff and great volunteers, all sharing the same purpose.

- Cathy, ReStore Volunteer

The GTA’s affordable housing shortage

• More than a quarter million renter households (286,420 renter households) are living in unaffordable conditions.**

• 43% of renter households spend more than 30% of its pre-tax income on rent.**

• 127,520 renter households are living in overcrowded conditions.**

• 106,000+ households waiting for affordable housing.*

• Average wait time for affordable housing is 7.47 years in Toronto, Brampton, Caledon and York Region.*

Today’s headlines about housing in the GTA can leave us feeling powerless in the face of huge challenges. Despite being home to the largest concentration of wealth in Canada, in 2016, the GTA continues to face a critical shortage of affordable housing. With over 106,000 households on the waitlist for affordable housing, the need has never been greater. In the regions Habitat GTA serves, housing is deemed unaffordable if a family spends more than 30% of their pre-tax income on rent.

every childdeserves a safe, secure environment in which to thrive

Thousands of families in the GTA juggle multiple jobs and still struggle to provide for their children. Some parents have to make the tough choice to either pay their bills or feed their family. Others fear for their children’s lives growing up in neighbourhoods that regularly witness acts of violence. While they may have a roof over their heads, it’s not a safe or affordable place to live.

• 82,414 households in the City of Toronto• 11,747 households in Peel• 12,130 households in York Region

Seeing the crew come together and build something that is bigger than us, keeps me coming back each day. Knowing that the homes we build will make a huge difference in the lives of the families we partner with, motivates me to work hard and ensure the homes are well built.

- Simon, Volunteer Build Crew Leader

will build a better future with affordable homeownership

Affordable homeownership helps families break the cycle of poverty. Owning a decent, safe, affordable home can allow families to live a more financially stable and healthier life. Habitat GTA delivers an affordable homeownership and mortgage model that is sustainable and scalable, and is proven through years of experience to provide more opportunity for children

and generations to come. In 2016, Habitat GTA helped 26 families, like the Williams’, lift themselves up out of instability and economic hardship, so they can build brighter futures. When families succeed, we all succeed, and strengthen the communities we live in.

Since moving into our new home, Habitat has given my family back control of our future. I can stand here and tell you, my family is safe and our laughter and joy echoes within our new home.

This is why our donors are essential to the work we do. Our thousands of volunteers cannot raise walls and build homes without contributions of cash, land, pro-bono services and building products from the thousands of corporate, individual and community donors who partner with us.
