Bajo el nombre de "Romanticismo" se esconde un grito desgarrador de libertad.
Después de la caída de Napoleón, el Romanticismo, es una vía de escape para las jóvenes generaciones que aspiran a encarnar los principios revolucionarios.
El Romanticismo puede entenderse como la "primera vanguardia en la Historia del Arte", la entrada en una nueva época, la nuestra.

• El arte deja de regirse por la doctrina del Clasicismo.
• El objetivo principal del arte no es la belleza, sino la expresión y sentimientos.
• Prima la subjetividad en detrimento de lo objetivo.
• Impera la Historia Nacional, el orgullo de las lenguas locales.
• Se impone el gusto por lo exótico, se valora lo distinto, y la mirada se fija en los mundos orientales.

Hace referencia al naufragio del barco francés "la Medusa" en la costa occidental africana en 1816. A instancias de las autoridades civiles y los pasajeros de alta alcurnia que se encontraban a bordo de los botes, el capitán ordena cortar los cabos de remolque abandonando la balsa a su suerte, dejando a la deriva a 149 tripulantes. Solo sobreviven 15 a la deriva durante dos semanas.

Realismo
El realismo pictórico fue una corriente artística que se desarrolló a mediados del siglo XIX y que alcanzó su máximo esplendor en Francia.
Se caracteriza por que los artistas dejaron a un lado los temas sobrenaturales y mágicos y se centraron en temas más corrientes.
Los principales sujetos pictóricos fueron los de la vida cotidiana.

Realismo
Los cambios fundamentales que hacen que se pase del Romanticismo al Realismo son:
1) La definitiva implantación de la burguesía olvidándose de la causa de 1789, ya que prefieren saborear los placeres de la vida.
2) La conciencia en los artistas de los terribles problemas sociales de la industrialización: trabajo para niños y mujeres, jornadas laborales interminables.
3) Desencanto con los estímulos revolucionarios de 1848, que llevan al artista a olvidarse del tema político y a centrarse en el tema social.

La Escuela de Barbizon de pintura (aprox. 1830–1870) fue el conjunto de pintores franceses reunidos en torno al pueblo de Barbizon, cercano al bosque de Fontainebleau, donde los artistas de este círculo llegaron a establecerse.
El hecho de que los pintores de Barbizon dejaran París para refugiarse en un pequeño pueblo ya es una actitud de abierta oposición al sistema vigente, no sólo en el ámbito plástico, sino también en el orden social.

Sargent nació en Florencia, Italia de padres
americanos.
Estudió en Italia, en Alemania y en París
con Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran.
En los tiempos en los que el arte se divide
en estilos bien característicos, como el
Impresionismo, el Fauvismo y el Cubismo,
Sargent practicaba el Realismo, que toma
como referencia a Velázquez, Van Dyck, y
