FEDERAL RESERVE statistical release For immediate release October 11, 1961 H.4.2 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended October 4: Decreases of $266 million in loans adjusted, $772 million in holdings of U. S. Government securi- ties; increases of $569 million in reserves with Federal Reserve Banks, and $900 million in demand deposits credited to domestic banks; and decreases of $64l million in demand deposits adjusted and $510 million in U. S. Government demand deposits. Commercial and industrial loans decreased a net of $11 million. Loans to brokers and dealers and loans to others for purchasing or carrying U. S. Government and other securities decreased $310 million. Loans to sales and personal financing institutions decreased $49 million, but loans to "other" nonbank financing institu- tions increased $33 million. "Other" loans increased $54 million. Numerous re- visions were made in the loan categories as of September 27, due to reported mis- classifications; the revisions are not being carried back beyond that date. Holdings of Treasury bills by weekly reporting member banks decreased $608 million, Treasury certificates decreased $18 million, and the combined total of Treasury notes and U. S. Government bonds decreased $146 million. "Other" securities increased $106 million. Demand deposits adjusted decreased $205 million in New York City, $159 million in the Chicago District, $111 million in the Dallas District, and $84 mil- lion in the Kansas City District. Time and savings deposits increased $151 million, which included an increase of $60 million in,savings deposits in the Chicago District outside the City of Chicago. Borrowings of weekly reporting member banks from Federal Reserve Banks decreased $48 million and borrowings from others decreased $259 million. H.4.2 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES

The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities

shows the following principal changes for the week ended October 4: Decreases of

$266 million in loans adjusted, $772 million in holdings of U. S. Government securi-

ties; increases of $569 million in reserves with Federal Reserve Banks, and $900

million in demand deposits credited to domestic banks; and decreases of $64l million

in demand deposits adjusted and $510 million in U. S. Government demand deposits.

Commercial and industrial loans decreased a net of $11 million. Loans to

brokers and dealers and loans to others for purchasing or carrying U. S. Government

and other securities decreased $310 million. Loans to sales and personal financing

institutions decreased $49 million, but loans to "other" nonbank financing institu-

tions increased $33 million. "Other" loans increased $54 million. Numerous re-

visions were made in the loan categories as of September 27, due to reported mis-

classifications; the revisions are not being carried back beyond that date.

Holdings of Treasury bills by weekly reporting member banks decreased

$ 6 0 8 million, Treasury certificates decreased $18 million, and the combined total

of Treasury notes and U. S. Government bonds decreased $146 million. "Other"

securities increased $106 million.

Demand deposits adjusted decreased $205 million in New York City, $159

million in the Chicago District, $111 million in the Dallas District, and $84 mil-

lion in the Kansas City District. Time and savings deposits increased $151 million,

which included an increase of $60 million in,savings deposits in the Chicago District

outside the City of Chicago.

Borrowings of weekly reporting member banks from Federal Reserve Banks

decreased $48 million and borrowings from others decreased $259 million. Loans

to domestic commercial banks decreased $101 million.
