EDITOR'S NOTE.

Hello all!

Brrr - I think we can safely say that winter is here! Hope you are all keeping warm on and off the training grounds, both humans and pooches.

It’s very cool to see so much training happening lately - this edition is just brimming with news of ribbons, trophies and certificates. We were pleased to see a high number of entries at our biannual club obedience and rally-o trial (p4-5) and so many pieces of good news coming through our inbox from members who achieved titles at other competitions and shows (p11).

Not to mention right at home - what a lovely long list of promotions this month (on this and the next page)! I guess you took Tony’s words last month seriously (You Just Need Practice, May 2019). Congratulations all - enjoy your well-trained dogs!

DINGO VISIT

On 18 May we were lucky enough to be graced with a visit from our friends at the Dingo Sanctuary Bargo. Luci Ellem, president of the Australian Native Dog Conservation Society and Rebecca Bancroft, vice president, visited with two dingoes from the sanctuary, brothers Kinta and Gubbah.

Dingoes are Australia’s wild dogs and have been in our country for thousands of years. However, their ability to breed with domestic dogs means that there are very few pure dingoes left in the wild. This has created concern about the dilution of the dingo gene pool and potentially the ultimate extinction of the dingo subspecies. The Society’s aim is to promote a better understanding of Australia’s native dog and to promote its official recognition and protection as native fauna.

A SIGN OF THINGS TO COMEby Tony Vink

I took a walk around the new Hills Showground metro station and the Showground last week.

It was the first day of official running of the new line after the previous day’s free ride mania. At 11 am it was a very quiet place and the parkade (multi storey car park) seemed full. An interesting terraced lawn and flower beds on the eastern side of the beautiful, leaf-shaped roof structure, affords pedestrians some place to sit and wait in the open.

No doubt everybody has seen the opening of the rail station at showgrounds near to the Hills Dog Club. It is a shining example of modern transport technology and an indication of where things are going in Sydney and the Hills district. The new metro will bring more people into the Hills and, hopefully, reduce the amount of traffic on certain routes between the Hills and the city.

However what else will it bring to the Hills and the Showgrounds in particular? We are very excited to see modernisation of the showgrounds. Imagine what the grounds will look like with easier access, nice walking

paths, dedicated spaces for people and animals too.

However the silence in regards to the planning of the new showgrounds is very disconcerting to me.

We have read that the council have awarded the architectural design company, McGregor Coxall, $898,000 to do a complete redesign of the Showground*. We have long known that something would be done in the showgrounds district and the showgrounds specifically. We are expecting to be contacted by the above company as part of the study for this master planning phase. In fact they will be quite busy speaking to all the clubs and organisations who make use of the Showgrounds.

HDC has preemptively spoken to council about our club and our place in this community.** We have on several occasions invited and entertained members of the Hills council at the club and always received positive and encouraging feedback from them personally. So, we know the councilors are favourably inclined.

p. 8 HILLS HOWLER - JUNE 2019

As a 40 year old organisation supporting many thousands of families with dogs, I hope that we will feature in the new Showgrounds plan.

In fact, I am hoping to get some ideas from any of our members with appropriate experience in marketing and promotion

to offer up some ideas to help campaign for our beloved club. Do we need to be more visible in the Hills? Do we stage a protest… ;-) Do we drop a milion flyers from a balloon?

Further along my walk I looked at the old buildings on Showground and yes, they need upgrading, to be pulled into the 21st century. I can envision some great improvements to the Showgrounds, and with the new station right there, we can assume that whatever happens on the new and improved Showground, will attract a lot of interest from outside the Hills. Perhaps we should campaign for dogs to allowed on the new Metro and all public transport in general...

Maureen Shepherd, club instructor, breeder and trainer has some words of wisdom for owners of her breed, the Shetland Sheepdog (sheltie). We feel they apply to all dog breeds, in fact… could this help you and your dog?

FIFTY SHADES OF SUCCESSED-UP SHELTIE!A light hearted but serious approach to Sheltie Obedience Training

by Maureen "Miljen" Shepherd

• Shelties are a gift from heaven- don't make his education hell on earth

• Do remember he is a dog first, Sheltie second

• Absolutely protect your Sheltie, but don't suffocate him

• Remove those rose-coloured spectacles

• Be consistent not conflicting

• Train don't drill

• Empathise don't sympathise

• Show your pleasure, not displeasure

• Teach don't preach

• Make it clear, not insincere

• Don't be a hag, don't nag

• Show him the world, don't isolate him

• Exercise the body more than the brain

• Stick to the plan, don't get stuck in a rut

• Keep her pretty, don't make her pretty useless

• Don't make excuses, find reasons

• let him lick you, don’t be "licked" by him .

• Explain, don't blame

• Keep it simple, stupid

• Don't train in pain

• Keep all in perspective, don't be introspective

• If he is clever enough, are you?

• Is this for his improved well being - or for yours?

• Be honest always

• If you feel out of control - place him out of your reach

• A sense of humour cures all ails

• When in doubt, keep thinking, not training

• Do remember, he can't read

• Beware, sometimes he knows more than you

• Manners maketh man, and Sheltie

• Respect happens on both sides of the fence

• Your Sheltie is the most V.I.P. in the ring

• Keep him healthy, keep him fit

•If you doubt him, he will doubt you more

•Feed his ego, not yours

•Don't be deaf, listen to what he is silently telling you

•If you lose your temper, you will surely lose the war

When I stand on that peg I have always believed we could win

PUPPY TALK

On 22 May, as part of our 12-month instructor’s course, trainee and existing instructors attended Vicki Austin’s lecture Let’s Talk About Puppies. Vicki is an experienced professional trainer who is passionate about high quality, science-based puppy class instruction. It was a pleasure to hear her insights about puppy raising and training as well as to see her border collies Chilli & Lisa!

Lisa is keen, Chilli's heard it all before!.

Karen Richardson's Bo.

Wow, Hills Dog Club members have been busy the last couple of months, here are just a few of our movers and shakers, thanks all for your contributions and we particularly appreciate your accompanying stories, you inspire us to do more with our dogs. Ed. Marleen Broekmans’ Harley is Novice Trick Dog

Jaki Wallbank’s Willow, Buffy & Zac - Novice Trick Dogs

Jacky Walker’s Kenzie and Ripple are Novice Trick Dogs

“Just for fun, I recently worked with my two dogs, Ripple (6y/o) and Kenzie (9 mos old), to achieve their NTD, or Novice Trick Dog titles. We are now working on their ITD, or Intermediate Trick Dog titles. This was done through a U.S.A. entity called 'Do More With

MOVERS AND SHAKERS

Vicki Gresser's Blade

Sandy O'Neill's Nova

Jakiy Walker's Ripple

Your Dogs' founded by Kyra Sundance. The aim of DMWYD is to help dogs and their owners develop joyful relationships based on trust and built through positive reinforcement training techniques. This is done by teaching tricks in a step-by-step method utilizing positive reinforcement techniques. We had a blast learning the tricks as I sure my fellow Hills members will too!"

Banjo and his UD 1st Place!

Gypsy and BanjoJacky Walker’s Ripple scored 100/100 in Rally Novice at Royal Bathurst Show

Karyn Gresser’s Banjo - 4 titles in 4 weeks! - UD, JD, SD & SPD

Gypsy - 2nd place in Rally Advanced A

“Banjo has been training in obedience at Hills Dog Club for the past 5 years. With the help of experienced instructors and members volunteering their time and knowledge, they have helped Banjo and I succeed to the level we are at today. He recently achieved his Utility Dog (UD) title, the second highest level in obedience and we are currently on our way to achieving our obedience championship. It’s not always smooth sailing and we have had a lot of setbacks, obedience trialling can be tricky. But together as a team and with much help from my mother Vicki (who is also an instructor at Hills), we will keep reaching for our goals.

The most important thing I keep reminding myself is to have fun and just enjoy spending time with my dogs.”

Lisa Hope’s Andie is Australian Show Champion

Vicki Gresser’s Blade - Rally Excellent title

Karen Richardson’s Bo - 3rd place in Open & Rally Advanced B

Sandy O’Neill’s Nova is Obedience Champion

Barbara Horsfield’s 11 year old Honey is now Junior Earth Dog

“Earthdogs is a sport for dachshunds and small terriers who were bred originally to hunt, chase, go to ground and find a quarry usually fox, otter and badger.

Banjo - so many titles, tiring!

Honey now has her Junior Earth Dog title. To gain this title she had to go down a tunnel, find the prey ( a rabbit skin held by a judge) and

work the prey (pull it, tug it, try to get it from the judge) for 45 seconds. She loves this sport and is quite upset with me when I have to get her from the tunnel. Her next challenge is Senor Earthdogs which has longer and more complex tunnels. She also has to come out on a recall. This could be interesting!

Earthdog Tests are held at the Dogs NSW Complex at Erskine Park during the cooler months.”

A MAN AND HIS DOG Author unknown

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them. After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, “Excuse me, where are we?” “This is Heaven, sir,” the man answered. “Wow! Would you happen to have some water?” The man asked. “Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up.”The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

“Can my friend,” gesturing toward his dog, “come in, too?” the traveller asked. “I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.” The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate. There was no fence, and the gate looked as though it had never been closed. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book. ”Excuse me!” he called to the man. “Do you have any water?” ”Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.”

”How about my friend here?” the traveller gestured to the dog. ”There should be a bowl by the pump,” said the man. They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveller filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the

dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree. ”What do you call this place?” the traveller asked. “This is Heaven,” he answered. “Well, that's confusing,” the traveller said. “The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.” “Oh, you mean the place

with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's Hell.” “Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?” “No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.”

This story was shared with us by member Katy Joscelyne, whose dogs Tuppence and Peppy would NEVER let her leave them behind!
