NEW FACES AT SAINT MARY! We welcome three new faces to the Basilica Family this month. Father Nicholas Blank arrived as our new Parochial Vicar on June 27. Father Noah Morey has been assigned as Chaplain at nearby Bishop Ireton High School and will be in residence here. Mr. Daniel Cinalli officially becomes the new principal of the Basilica School of Saint Mary on July 1. Please join me in welcoming them to Saint Mary’s!

PAROCHIAL VICAR Father Nicholas Blank The oldest of nine children (six boys and three girls), Father Nicholas was born in Fort Ord, CA. His parents, Richard and

Monica Blank, homeschooled him and his siblings. He is a graduate of Christendom College in Front Royal, VA, where he majored in philosophy. Drawn to a possible vocation to the priesthood, he went on to study at Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD. His diaconate assignment was with the Cathedral of Saint Thomas More in

Arlington. On June 8, he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Arlington by Bishop Michael Burbidge. Father Nicholas says he enjoys playing soccer and baseball, following the New York Mets (perhaps some of our parish Nats fans may want to work on that!), singing and playing guitar. Meet Father Nicholas when he speaks on July 18 as part of our Summer Faith & Culture Series.

CHAPLAIN AT BISHOP IRETON Father Noah Morey Born in Coeur d'Alene, ID, Father Noah grew up in Seattle and was home-schooled until college. He enrolled in Christendom College and graduated in 2008 with a degree in theology. After college, he taught Latin and history and coached several sports at Chelsea Academy in Front Royal. In 2009, after discerning a vocation, he enrolled in Mount Saint Mary's Seminary. (Vocations are a family affair: The sixth of eight children, his older brother is a Benedictine priest and an older sister is a Discalced Carmelite nun.) He was ordained a priest on June 6, 2015, and has spent the past four years as Parochial Vicar at All Saints in Manassas. You’ll see Father Noah celebrating Masses at the Basilica this summer before he assumes his full-time duties at Bishop Ireton in the fall.

SCHOOL PRINCIPAL Mr. Daniel Cinalli Mr. Cinalli is a longtime resident of Northern Virginia and attended Catholic schools in our diocese from grades K through 12. He holds a BA in English from George Mason University

and a Masters of Education Administration with a concentration in Catholic School Leadership from Marymount University. He comes to us after serving as principal at Saint Michael School in Annandale and assistant principal at Saint Timothy Catholic School in Chantilly. Prior to that, he taught English at Paul VI High School in

Fairfax. He and his wife Arielle reside in Reston and are parish-ioners at Saint Joseph in Herndon. You are invited to meet Mr. Cinalli at our School Parent/Parishioner Reception on Sunday, September 8, in the Lyceum after the 5 p.m. Mass.

Our Rectory and Parish Offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4.

One Mass will be celebrated

in the Basilica that day at 9 a.m.

Have a relaxing, safe and very happy Fourth of July!

CHRIST HOUSE BACKPACK PROJECT Each year we see our needy neighbors struggling to make ends meet in August as they face high expenses getting their kids ready for a new school year. Catho-lic Charities’ Emergency Assistance Program and Saint

Lucy’s Project "Back-to-School Backpacks" has helped hundreds of low-income families ensure their kids have all they need. Catholic Daughters, Junior Catholic Daughters and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul are joining Catholic Charities’ Christ House to in-

crease the number of children helped this year to 200, filling new backpacks with school supplies and a $20 gift card to purchase a new pair of shoes. New shoes worn the first day of school can do wonders for a child! Consider donating $20 or more to help buy shoe gift cards and supplies. Volunteers will be outside the Basil-ica after Mass TODAY, Sunday, June 30 to collect dona-tions. Or checks may be made out to Catholic Daughters Court Kavanaugh or the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul and placed in the Poor Box or left at the parish office. Donations should be identified as intended for the Back-to School Backpack Project.

Thank you for your generosity!

Vatican Urges Dialogue on Gender Theory in Education

Earlier this month, the Holy See’s Congregation for Catholic Education released a new document entitled Male and Female He Created Them: Towards a Path of Dialogue on the Question of Gender Theory in Education. The document outlines theological

and scientific truths about the human person. Read more about the document at

https://stmaryoldtown.org/ Male-and-Female-He-Created-Them

Bishop Michael Barber of the Diocese of Oakland

notes that “in a difficult and complex issue, the clarity of Church teaching, rooted in the equal dignity of men and women as created by God,

provides the light of truth and compassion that is most needed in our world today.”

From Your Saint Vincent de Paul Society For the first time in his life, Justin, a disabled young man, has the opportunity to live independently in his own place. He lives on disability of $776 a month and his rent will be subsidized. But the landlord is requiring a full mar-ket security deposit of $1,600. He has saved and borrowed $800 but can find no more. Here is a chance to make a real difference in this young man’s life; to give him a sense of pride, self-worth, and be-longing to a community that cares. Sever-al Alexandria churches put together the balance of $800 and St. Vincent de Paul paid the first month’s rent. Such stories are not unusual. Our volun-teers get a glimpse into the lives of those who are strug-gling and through the generosity of Basilica parishioners can help change a life for the better. You walk beside us on every home visit we make. Please remember the poor by making a donation in the Poor Box as you leave the Basilica or through Faith Direct or leaving your dona-tion at the parish office.

FARM GLEAN WITH SAINT LUCY PROJECT Commissioned by Christ is joining Catholic Charities of Arlington’s Saint Lucy Project to glean crops at Parker Farms on the northern neck of Virginia through a series of one-day mission trips. These trips are great family events, an opportunity to help feed the hungry (a corporal work of mercy), and a great service project for church groups, Bible studies, book clubs and confirmation students. Upcoming one-day mission trips are scheduled for August 3, September 7, October 5 or November 2. Each starts at 9 a.m. and ends no later than 3 p.m. The crops have been donated by farmers and will be transported back to the Saint Lucy Project warehouse and distributed to local, hungry resi-dents within 48 hours of picking the produce. To sign up for a mission trip, visit www.commissionedbychrist.org and click on “Get Involved.” For more information, con-tact CBC Farm Gleaning Mission Trip Volunteer Coordi-nator Tom Pedagno at [email protected].
